NY Mag: Global Warming Cure Depends on ‘Fat, Spoiled 21st-Century Americans’

A few weeks ago as the world awaited the release of the most recent report from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, some well-known scientists were quoted as saying that the media’s sensationalistic coverage of the issue was interfering with a reasoned discussion on the topic.

Their thinking was that the more the press and Hollywoodans suggest that the problem is so dire that the world is coming to an end, the more likely the public will develop a sense of futility about the issue, and just begin to ignore it.

A fine example of exactly what these scientists were talking about was published in the most recent issue of New York magazine (h/t radio host Mike Church). In fact, Kurt Andersen’s article sounded such hyperbolic alarm that he had the gall to suggest that “fat, spoiled, 21st-century Americans” only have a 50-50 chance of possessing the “requisite gumption and discipline” to solve the problem (emphasis added throughout, apologies in advance for Andersen’s vulgarity):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The science has gotten more unambiguous and empirical. And in this Infotainment Age, Al Gore successfully distilled (and, um … dramatized) the relevant science in last year’s An Inconvenient Truth. The anecdotal folk science—New Orleans flooded, January days in the seventies—has been freakishly on-message. (Katrina was the liberal equivalent of neoconservatives’ blaming Saddam for 9/11, a connect-the-dots opportunity too good to resist, even if it wasn’t true.) Giant, super-American, ultra-Republican corporations—Wal-Mart!—have started greening themselves. There’s an acutely appealing feel-good aspect right now, as we contemplate our present geopolitical debacle—having fucked up Iraq, maybe we can manage to do better on global warming. And Americans have also come to take climate change seriously, I think, partly as a result of George Bush’s strenuous discounting of the problem. Since his administration’s main claims about Iraq have proved spectacularly false—the 9/11 connection, WMDs, Mission Accomplished, the insurgency’s “last throes”—an intuitive syllogism has naturally taken hold among Americans: If Bush asserts something, no matter how sincerely, then probably the opposite is true.

Anderson conveniently ignored that the Administration has changed its position on this issue and, therefore, as Bush is now asserting that climate change is real, maybe the opposite is true.

Regardless of the delicious irony that eluded the author, he continued with this line of “consensus” thinking, whilst crescendoing to the following insulting conclusion:

Americans have an intensely ambivalent relationship with sin and redemption. Heedlessly ruining the global climate is plainly sinful, and we are a people desperate to feel good about our shining city on a hill. But we also hated Jimmy Carter’s guilt-inducing sermons. (As I do some of the current green epiphenomena: The other day a Whole Foods clerk refused to give me Splenda with my cup of coffee—artificial sweeteners, their Website explains, lack “ideological compatibility.”) Americans have shown themselves willing to undertake epic battles against evil only when there’s somebody else to hold accountable—Nazis, communists, radical Islamists. But blaming and changing our own Homer Simpson–ish ways of life? We couldn’t even make Prohibition work.

This upsurge of alarm and pledges of commitment will grow, but it won’t last forever. As a political matter, we probably have a decade to lock into place new regimes of regulation and market incentives. Which happens to be the same do-or-die time frame that a lot of scientists believe we have to start getting gassy modern life back in balance with the Earth’s natural systems. Not to put too fine a point on it, but this looks to be the ultimate test of our national character: Do we fat, spoiled 21st-century Americans have the requisite gumption and discipline to be born again, and then do what’s necessary to try to keep the planet from going off the rails? I’d say the odds are 50-50.

And you wonder why so many scientists around the world are worried about how the media are covering this issue?

nice argument

So instead of the same old - agree with us or you're ignorant - its agree with us or you're fat and lazy. Its good to change it up sometimes.

"Do we fat, spoiled 21st-century Americans have the requisite gumption and discipline to be born again, and then do what’s necessary to try to keep the planet from going off the rails? I’d say the odds are 50-50."

Yes, if only we had the same gumption as Europe, the same Europe that isn't meeting their emission goals, and is increasing emissions at 3 times the rate the U.S. is. And they signed Kyoto.

“fat, spoiled, 21st-century

“fat, spoiled, 21st-century Americans” only have a 50-50 chance of possessing the “requisite gumption and discipline” to solve the problem

Sounds like Al Gore to me... Let's not leave out Nancy Pelosi, Brad Pit, John Edwards, John Kerry, Barbara Streisand and a host of celebs consuming the earth with their ravenous consumption of electricity and fuel.  The bigger issue  Kurt is: when are these fat spoiled people going to stop consuming 20 or more times what the ordinary American uses?  You can't be pointing the finger of blame at those whose consumption pales in comparison to these so called Green leaders.  So Kurt I suggest you fine tune your attack where it will have the greatest effect, those who consume at least 50% of the residential electrical use of the US.  You lack a sense of proportion.

Do we expect them to live in cardboard boxes?  No.  We expect them to live sustainably by getting off the electric grid, stop flying in private jets and drive electric cars.  If just these 15 million people who have the means, live up to their responsibilities then you have accomplished your goal.

I received the following post

I received the following post from a friend in an e-mail.  The facts are uncorroborated except that the 2nd house seems to have the environmental features as described. Enjoy!

"LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.

HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas.  Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas.  In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR.  The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2, 400.00 per month.  In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home.  This house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either.  It's in the South.

  HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide.  The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest.  A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground.  The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in winter and cools it in summer.  The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system.  Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern.  Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern.  The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house.  Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville,Tennessee.  It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas.  Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush."

Dr. Al Gore is all talk, President George W Bush is all walk.  Who is providing leadership here in securing the nations future?  You be the judge.  A true leader does not ask his followers to do anything he himself will not do.

Kurt says we have to get modern life back in balance with Earth's natural systems? The Earth is always in a state of flux and we are a natural part of the earth anyway.People are going to tire of all this "chicken little " thinking when they see that flooding, tornados, hurricanes etc. are happening and always have happened.

No matter how clever and inventive human technology can be, it will be overwhelmed by the explosive multiplication of unrelenting population growth," asserted Randy Alcorn, a senior writing fellow at Californians for Population Stabilization.

"While it may be beneficial to replace incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs, it would be more effective towards salvaging the planet to turn on light bulbs in minds darkened by political expediency and religious dogma," he said.

"Those who surrender reason to religious and political doctrine and push the rubble of their misguided convictions into the path of prudent population reduction policies are complicit in condemning an entire planet to doom," said Alcorn.

Yeap, there it is, the final solution.  The Last Child, who knew it would be prophetic!

Hilarious.  The population I

Hilarious.  The population IS stabilizing.  Japan's population is projected to contract to 100 million or so over the next few decades.  Russia is undergoing a demographic collapse.  Europe is so short of people it has been forced to encourage immigration, because they aren't reproducing enough to generate future taxpayers to fund their Nanny States.  China is in danger, due to their one-child policy, of "getting old before they get rich" (from The Economist).  Even parts of the world with booming populations are reflecting slowdowns in population growth.

It is too bad that we as Americans have an ugly image of being fat , spoiled and gluttonous for the many ways we pollute. But we prefer to not walk  an extra 10 yards when we cant find the most convenient parking spot or wait for 5 minutes for an elevator instead of taking the stairs. As long as we have this hatred for extra exercise many of us will continue to be fat regardless of whether you believe in global warming or that we might be polluting this earth.

ML,

You and I agree on very little, but I am with you on this one. I read an article a few years back about the correlation between modern society's conveniences and average weight. It's rather shocking actually when you consider power-riding lawnmowers, elevators, escalators, washing machines, dryers, etc., etc., and how many calories we used to burn as a species on a daily basis doing normal activities that we don't today.

I'll give you possibly the most astounding example. I belong to a very prestigious athletic club. It's two stories. At least ten percent of the members use the elevator between floors rather than walking one flight of stairs. I kid you not.

As for what this extra consumption does to the planet, who knows? However, as a business owner, one of my biggest bugaboos is package waste via the mail and other delivery systems. On a given day, I can receive as many as four documents from the same vendor in separate 11 1/2 x 14 inch cardboard "envelopes." How much would have been saved if the four documents were combined into one envelope?

Mine is a small company. Now, multiply that across the landscape of small, medium, and large companies, and imagine the energy and natural resource waste. Incredible.    ns

Im glad that liberals and conservatives (?) can sometimes agree that waste and pollution are putting a burden on our society immediately. Regardless of how you feel about global warming, cars pollute. We can make small steps such as getting out of our car instead of going through a drive through. Walking and riding a bike to places instead of having to depend on a vehicle.

Im  glad that unsane rides a bike to stay fit. The chinese are encouraging folks to ride bikes instead of polluting the one of the dirtiest cities (in regards to air pollution), Bejing.

ML,

Actually, conservatives get a bad rap when it comes to green issues. We are just as interested in clean air, clean water, and clean streets as liberals. And, I bet we're willing to pay more for all three. We just don't believe government is the answer to solving the problems.

If you want some proof to my claim, just look at the house Al Gore lives in versus the real home of George W. Bush. One is a shining example of "green" life. The other is a despicable example of excess and total lack of regard for conservation or the environment.

Yet, you revere the one that lives a much more energy wasteful life, and detest the shining example of conservation and environmentalism.

Think about it. The hypocrisy here is so thick you can cut it with a knife. And, I suggest to you quite fervently that most conservatives are just as interested in such issues in their personal lives as any liberal, maybe even more.

I've got solar panels on my pool. We recycle glass, aluminum, and paper. My wife takes public transportation to work. I was in DC for five days a few weeks back, and didn't use one cab, and didn't rent a car. I walked everywhere, or used the Metro (?).

Conservatives don't want to ruin the environment, ML. We just don't like hypocrites like Al Gore et al telling us what to do while they live a "dirty" lifestyle as they rake in millions nay billions selling "solutions" they wouldn't ever use themselves.

Think about it.  ns

That may be true to an extent

That may be true to an extent about exercise, however, as long as Dr. Al Gore and his buddies consume 20 times (at minimum) the average American, it would take 200 American households saving 10% each to equal Dr. Al Gore's ravenous consumption on just one of his four mansions.  So what's the point of saving if Dr. Al Gore, flips another light switch on only to wipe out any meaningful savings from concientious people?  Feel good doesn't cut it if things are what you say.

BTW-those of us with no money to burn already have enacted energy conservation measures, so you are preaching to the choir about saving energy, you need to be shaming Dr. Al Gore and John Edwards with their humongous mansions, 10k and 28k, respectively.  Why are they still on the electric grid? Why are they flying around in private jets?  One gets the impression that they want us to cut back so they can consume all the more or at least continue with their unsustainable lifestyle.

Because in the socialist/utop

Because in the socialist/utopian world certain individuals, aka party members etc. will have the perks that the unwashed do not. They, of course, will be the privileged few and can do as they wish. In the old USSR party members probably were'nt rich in the western sense but they did have their perks and privileges.

ahusser,

You are correct. The idea that a socialist society is a classless one is a myth. The only difference is, in a socialist system, there are far, far fewer people in the upper classes.

In the old Soviet Union, once party members reached a certain rank, they were permitted to shop in the stores that actually had goods to sell, unlike the average comrade, who was forced to "shop" in the stores for the masses.

I still recall early '90s C

I still recall early '90s Christmas shopping in a "Toys R Us" with a new immigrant Russian friend. When she saw something she liked, she'd instantly grab as many of them as possible, to the point that it became hard for her to walk with all those toys. When I asked her why, she said that she feared the hoardes of Americans in the store would quickly empty the shelves of any good toys, just as Russians would-have with such full shelves, so I had to assure her that we could shop around because Toys R Us had lots of stuff in the back even if the numerous Americans did buy the toys she liked. Seeing that toy store's capitalist bounty through Olga's eyes that day is something that has stuck in my mind ever-since...

When I rode my bike to the store the other day to gather the material required for some life-saving meals, I did it for three reasons:

1) I want to live a long, healthy life.

2) I love my bicycle and missed it terribly.

3) It saved me a few dollars at the pump.

Note that none of those reasons reflect personal guilt for living in the world's largest and most advanced economy (I have none) nor a "save the planet" mentality.

fruit is borne and people are multiplied

There are correlations between 'fatter people' and 'more people', and between 'more and fatter people' and 'climate change'.  It is this: when the climate gets warmer, more things grow, fruit is borne and people are multiplied.  Technology and all that is human follows.  Real scientists reckon that this most recent climate warming trend started around the mid-1800s.  The danger that we pose to the climate is nil; the danger that we pose to each other is absolute.

The GW propaganda is designed to help the Left gain political advantage.  There are about 6.7 billion people.  War, drought, plague and famine have occured throught recorded and unrecorded history.  Its occuring now and will occur in the future.  In fact, the more people, the more likely it is.  So, the GW Leftists are just planting the irrational idea of AGW w/ hopes that such chaos will occur that they might take political advantage of people who are crazy with emotion.  Its the radical Left who lost the Cold War and who've taken this as a desparate political refuge in hopes of mass hysteria brought about by terrible chaos.
