‘The View’ Discusses Gun Control, Ignores Rosie’s Armed Bodyguard Controversy

It certainly was predictable that in the wake of the horrific Virginia Tech massacre, the ladies of ABC’s “The View” – in particular, former gun control advocate Rosie O’Donnell – were going to use the incident to once again attack the Second Amendment.

Yet, when such a discussion on Tuesday completely ignored Rosie O’Donnell’s own controversy surrounding this issue – it was identified in May 2000 that one of her bodyguards applied for a gun permit – the coffee klatch oozed with hypocrisy.

To properly set the table, Rosie and the gang were discussing the Virginia Tech killings, and all those present took a predictably anti-Second Amendment and anti-NRA stance with the predictable exception of Elisabeth Hasselbeck whose challenge to O’Donnell set off the following delicious exchange: (h/t and video available here thanks to NRO’s Media Blog):

Hasselbeck: Gun control is something that is, it’s a difficult thing, because you think of how many people have been protected by arming themselves with, you know, women who would have been, you know, otherwise would have been raped and murdered being able to arm themselves and protect themselves against an attacker.

O’Donnell: Nearly every single study done in every single country proves that that’s wrong. However, you’re never gonna change the gun laws in America. It’s one of the most powerful lobbies…

Hasselbeck: It’s hard, it’s a Constitutional right…

O’Donnell: We’ve amended the Constitution before when the rights of humans have been violated. And if my right to live peacefully in America is violated by someone’s right to own a semi-automatic gun…

Yet, despite her activism, when Rosie herself felt threatened back in 2000, she privately didn’t feel this way. As reported by The Stamford Advocate on May 25 of that year:

An application for a concealed weapon permit by Rosie O'Donnell's bodyguard has some Greenwich neighbors of the television personality and gun-control advocate up in arms.

The application, which is pending with the Greenwich Police Department, led to a rumor that the permit's purpose would be to allow the bodyguard to legally carry a gun when accompanying O'Donnell's son to public school in September.

For those that have forgotten – which appears to include the entire panel of “The View” including O’Donnell herself – this created quite a stir at the time, because she was staunchly in favor of gun control, and was harshly criticizing guests of her show on the other side of the argument including Tom Selleck (video available here).

Yet, although Rosie at the time tried to resolve the controversy by suggesting that the bodyguard had applied for this license at the request of the company he represented, she did admit to feeling the need to be protected:

But the talk-show host said she and her family do need protection because of threats made against her, arising from her pro-gun control stands.

O'Donnell expressed concern that publicity about her son's attendance at a local school - coupled with the information that the guard would be unarmed - could make him vulnerable to harm.

O'Donnell said she can reconcile her support of gun control with the guard being armed on occasion.

"I don't personally own a gun," she said, "but if you are qualified, licensed and registered, I have no problem."

As such, when Rosie felt threatened almost seven years ago, and needed to protect her family, guns were acceptable. Seven years later, when she obviously now feels safe, and another national tragedy has occurred, it’s time to amend the Constitution.

Just another example of the well-established liberal mantra, “Do as I Say, Not as I Do,” wouldn’t you agree?

Alas, wouldn’t it be wonderful if someone on “The View” brought this issue up the next time Rosie went on an anti-Second Amendment/anti-NRA rant?

Don’t hold your breath.

Rosie today on the View

Of course not, sarky.   But speaking of antidepressants, I might need some, 'cause I watched again today.  I took a bullet for youse guys, so to speak.   It was difficult, but I knew there would be gems....and there were:

Rosie:  "I'm no longer fighting the NRA, because (looking into the camera and switching to a slow, doom-laden voice) they...will...stop...you...in...any...way...they...can."

Rosie: "Foxnews has an agenda to distract you from the important things."

Rosie:  "I imagined myself as having a cape and flying around as part of the Justice League."  This instantly brought up disturbing images of the well-known saying (I'm laughing so hard, it's hard to type), When Pigs Fly.

Hasselbeck wasn't there, but surprisingly, no one seemed to miss her strong defense of the conservative point of view." <sark off>

The entire segment was a Witch Hunt against the 2nd Amendment as they stirred their pot and chanted "gun control!", "gun control!" ....

But the average Joe must rely on the cops to show up an hour after you've been shot by the criminal - who was out on furlough - and was on (or off) ritalin for some made-up disorder, and has a history of "inappropriate" behavior and whose gun was smuggled across the Mexican border and sold on the black market - or stolen...

Is it not odd that she is against the very thing that would assist her and the american people in protecting the very civil rights she is so sure are being taken away via the patriot act.

Can someone get some debate points over to Hassleback before the show, I mean, does she not do any homework? Anybody could see it would be an issue to be discussed.

I watched the exchange, not all of it, these women are annoying. I think Rosie took some extra medication before she went on air, she was out of it. Typical liberal, do as I say, not as I do. as for little Lizzy, she's never prepared to go up against Rosie. I tried to send her an email of how disappointed I was with her and typical, the email wouln't go through. The show is awful, I don't know why anyone watches it. ??????

Sure enough, Rosie the tent model was in full hypocrital form, claiming that she's been fighting for more gun control for years, but she's "given up."   She says "we can't win against the NRA because they're organized, they have weapons and they're scary."

True to form, Hasselbeck didn't question Rosie about her own armed bodyguards..."

Well, you can always e-mail or PM me when you see something delicious. In reality, Justin handles "The View," and I don't watch the program. As I've mentioned, I refuse to watch this abomination. However, I saw this piece yesterday at NRO, and saw O'Reilly discussing the issue with Bernie Goldberg. So, when nobody jumped on this, I decided to write about it this morning.  ns

1) Rosie's comment about the NRA having guns and being "scary."

2) Hasselbeck's non-challenge of Rosie's hypocricy.     ;^>

It so troubles me to see how

It so troubles me to see how far we have fallen from the freedom loving, independence minded founders of this country.  It has almost become a given (maybe because it is reinforced at every level of our lives by schools, government, and the MSM) that people expect the government to solve our problems and that people are willing to give up any previously hard won freedom to allow the government to keep them "safe."  The debate about guns (IMO) is not about violence or legally purchasing or illegally purchasing guns.  It is, and always will be about - FREEDOM.  My owning a gun does not infringe upon anyone else's right to life, liberty, or property.  Period.  The counter to that is always - But if a nut has a gun and shoots me, then isn't that violating my right to life.  That is a complete non sequitur.  Hell, if anyone took a Swiss Army knife and killed me it would, based on the typical anti-freedom nut's argument, be grounds for having the government outlaw Swiss Army Knives. 

I also support the argument that it is because the people can keep and bare arms that our government is kept in check.  If for no other reason, I will never surrender my firearms because of that.  There are too many instances in history where people were first disarmed and then slaughtered or subjugated to simply give up my ability to defend myself.  Many may say that this is an extremist's view.  So be it.

O'Donnell's hypocrisy on gun

O'Donnell's hypocrisy on gun control reminds me celebrity defense counsel Jerry Spence (old guy always wearing a buckskin jacket) and the death penalty.

Like most trial lawyers, he's against the death penalty.  But many years ago, when he was hired to prosecute a mob case for the city of Los Angeles, he asked for the death penalty for the guilty mobster.

Years later on the CNN show CROSSFIRE, when confronted with the duplicity, Spence explained that it was important to do away with the guilty felon because if he were given a life sentence, he could always direct his organization by phone to endanger Spence's family.

So, when Spence felt HIS family was at risk, the death penalty is on.  When other families believe they are at risk, no death penalty. 

O'Donnell rightly feels her community would be a safer place for her family if only her bodyguard had a weapon.

The issue at VT should be focused on security, not gun control. Focusing on the latter is going to be fruitless and does absolutely nothing to make our students any safer at school.

Pay attention to how the gunman was able to walk freely into the halls and open fire, and that there was nothing there to stop him. How difficult is it to get into one of the halls? How close by are armed guards?

Colleges in the most dangerous neighborhoods are also probably the safest. They are prepared for the worst case scenario, which most likely discourages or prevents such tragedies from occurring there. Meanwhile, the schools that look the safest end up being the most vulnerable to an attack. Perhaps Big City University security methods should be used across the board, right down the board to Noodledoosie Community College.

This dialogue was so unbelieveable it was almost comical!  Once again, The Mouth spews off 'statistics' of how other countries run things, criticizes President Bush for not responding quick enough to the Katrinia victims, pats herself on the back by saying how wonderful of a citizen she is and offers absolutely no proof to back up anything she says. She speaks in quasi-generalizations to attempt to prove her hypothesis and, once again,  falls flat on that fat, ugly face of hers.

However, Elisabeth once again demonstrated she is the token 'conservative' on this show by sitting there, being nice, and barely challenging any of The Mouth's points. When is she going to start showing so moxie about any of her positions? Makes me wonder why she is on that show - Ann Coulter would chew up Rosie and spit her out! Elisabeth needs to take a few lessons from Ann.

Wow!  Where to start?  We have no gun control laws!?  That's complete bull!  Hey, Rosie, do your research!  You know what, we may have too many laws.  Had students and/or professors had guns, who know how many lives could've been saved!  Guess what, you take our guns away, then only the criminals have guns!  That's a real brainer of an idea.

I wish I could take credit for this, but Rush brought up an excellent point.  Two of the most horrific incidents of taking of human life happened with box cutters and fertilizer.  Should there be tougher box cutter laws.  Why not ban them, too, Rosie.  How about eliminating the production of fertilizer?  Of course that would leave us with any MSM to make fun of.

IF ONLY... our country would have made hi-jacking airplanes and flying them into buildings illegal, 9/11 would have never happened. Oh wait.. never mind.. that is illegal..  I guess the terrorists didn't get the memo.

Don't forget that at the time she was criticizing Tom Selleck, she was doing tv commercials for KMart, which sold guns.  When she was confronted with the double standard, I think she tried to pretend she didn't know they sold guns and then she said she would run out the contract but not do any more commercials.  When she figured out KMart sold guns, I think she accepted the KMart salary without batting an eye.
