It's probably pretty good, because our local uber liberal TV critic panned it as being "baldly propagandist" and that it creates "journalistic damage."
If he hates it, it sounds to me like a "MUST SEE" event!
... now, RJ, did that same critic call Michael Moore's 9/11 film "baldly propagandist" and assert that it creates "journalistic damage"? I'm sure he did. Why am I even asking?
Ha. Of course not Dahlia. I've been doing battle with this guy and his bosses for years, due to his blatant politicalization of the TV Review column. I've been fairly successful. Believe it or not, this is a BIG cutback from the kind of wild-eyed leftist political rantings he used to put out.
Oh, hell yes. I've been terrorizing (in a friendly way) virtually every columnist in our liberal state newspaper, the Hartford Courant, for years. Actually, except for a couple of them who I've really ticked off, like this TV guy, I have pretty good email relationships over there...more than a dozen of 'em. Even got invited to a letters banquet.
Cast blame and second guess. The media is so good at that. It's a wonder we don't put them in charge, but then again, they wouldn't have anyone but themselves to blame and second guess and we know they are incapable of doing that...
I found that item really heart-warming, Sphincter. Our country's more multicultural every day, as it shows us here: "The 61 illegal aliens are natives of Brazil, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Lebanon, Mexico, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, the newspaper reported."
Of course, this hit man er, reporter inflates the numbers; we haven't 14 million illegals in this country. We must give them more time. In fact, it becomes apparent that a lot of the Mexican intruders are being counted multiple times, since they keep re-entering.
If we subtracted all the 3- or 4-time recidivist entries, the total out of Mejico is likely just 5 million. (Nice round number.)
Well, Taco, I noticed, as usual, laughingly, you jumped to the conclusion that I was referring to Mexicans in the second piece. Read the line again, Frijoles.
Let me help you, since the internet is a tricky thing for you:
Also, here's a heartwarming story about the poor, downtrodden, innocent undocumented workers that are productive citizens of our great land.
Wow. The word Mexico does not appear. What a shock. My hook is still in your mouth, Taco, I have to throw you back into the water, you are too small. Thanks for being such an easy fish to catch, once again. Buenos Nachos, Taco!
I recall a big rooster we had; and the awful thing that happened to the big guy.
He found an old green frog-lure in the yard, and started pecking at it. Pretty soon his comb was snagged. He fussed trying to pull it off, his foot got stuck, then his wattles. He was a bleeding mess. My dear Mom had to get a pair of pliers and dig the barbs out. He was so exhausted he just laid there like dead while she "operated". I tell you, we were all crying for the bum.
Have you ever got your sphincter snagged that way, Rog ? When you were casting for old guys like Tumbler? I'll bet that hook was way down deep where the sun never shines, and you had to pay to get it extirpated. (extirpate, a fifty-cent word for "yanked out.")
I made a joke to that effect yesterday at lunch when I first saw Ho's obituary in the paper. "There's gotta be an Imus joke in there somewhere," is how I phrased it. Either they didn't get it, or didn't think it was funny, but it started a conversation about the whole Imus thing. Which, of course, was not my intention.
Rest in tiny bubbles, Don Ho.

I think Gaggle is just disgusting opportunism, the typical paranoid circle-the-wagons circle jerk you like to engage in. I live in Colorado near enough to Columbine and we didn't do the blame thing here. As an independent and gun owner, I can tell you that most of us up here in the hills have guns- and we come from all walks. My very left wing neighbor has a federal license and the most amazing arsenal you could imagine. There will naturally be a debate regarding a solution to crazies with guns. The dialogue is healthy and it should be welcomed. But no one is taking my gun away- and if things really went to shit, my canyon will be dug in like a deer tick and armed to the teeth. Liberals and Conservatives alike. Neighbors. Don't take the lazy way out and blame liberals. It's a cheap shot and has nothing to do with reality.
My point is that you can't stop mentally unstable people from doing this kind of thing. Period. But to blame Liberals for the problem is just stupid. A debate is fine, and should be welcomed. Nothing will change for me in any outcome. Just don't jump down the throats of liberals: we got an s-load of firearms in this country, but statistically not that many crazies willing to do this. Do you really think that liberals, by their very nature, are anti-gun? Not true. Do you think they have a concern about this kind of incident? Very true. I know this as a fact.
So it's not the liberals that are ramming gun control down our throats? What does "not stopping mentally unstable people" have to do with not allowing citizens to protect themselves?
"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it."MM says...
Mobi, if there's a "circle the wagons" mentality it's yours. (Notice I don't have to use the rest of your juvenile sentence to make my point.) The liberals, which means the Democrats and the media, have already begun doing exactly what Gaggle predicted. It didn't take clarivoyance to know it was coming, but it does take blind circle the wagons denial to refuse to admit it.
late reply here- I have work to do. If you listen to the left side of radio you will find that there are very few advocates of gun control, mostly a lot of people raising questions. Most thinking Americans understand that these isolated acts of crazy people have nothing to do with politics. When you feel compelled to equate this to a left vs. right issue, you miss the point and lose the focus. Granted that the left will bring up the issue of gun control, the issue is valid but doesn't go to the core of the situation. The man was sick. The left is discussing how we can keep these threats down by recognizing the symptoms and dealing with them. The right here, as far as I have read, is focused on blaming the left. This is the 'circle jerk' which I phrased before. How about a discussion of underlying cultural pathologies or lack of psychological asessment and response? You guys are smart enough to rise to that, instead of knee-jerk reactions.
I have not blamed "the left," because some of them are actually sensible about firearms. I've instead blamed the victim disarmament policies continually-suggested the left in place on that campus. The grab-lobby left is blaming hi-cap magazines & pro-gun people, just like I said they would this morning before sunrise. The concealed weapon permit people warned about this, and then it happened after they were ignored, and you expect us to say what??? JMR
"Do you think liberals by their very nature are anti-gun?" What the heck are you smoking, Mobi? Talk about "circle the wagons" denial! Of course the majority of gun control advocates are on the left.
Notice that, once again I did not have to resort to the juvenile descriptives...as you so often find it necessary to to....why is that, Mobi? Because you're not confident enough in your logical arguments?
In any event, your claim that there are "very few advocates of gun control on the left" is equally ludicrous. Just on today's NB threads alone, CNN, BBC, CBS, The Early Show, and MSNBC are showcased for their "gun control" questions. In addition, I've heard liberal control advocates calling in to conservative shows all day long.
I "misspoke" on that- blame Alberto. The people I know on the left are rural types and guns are a given. Coming from Chicago, the equation changes. Again, I own guns. I'm sometimes liberal. The two are not mutually exclusive. When you paint it so then there is no more discussion. Just mudslinging and lack of progress. And for me the right here is often happier with that than discourse. Floyd's Barbershop is a happy place. And a philosophical circle jerk. No new thoughts. Like the hard left as well. But what is the point in discussion if no one gives credence to opposing views?
You preach about "mudslinging?" That's your main stock in trade, Mobi.
I enjoy intelligent debate with opposing views, but you're an intellectual phony. I see no value in debating someone who cannot rely on his mental prowess or reason, and instead uses silly juvenile descriptors. That person is always, ultimately, a disappointing and dishonest fraud who either disappears or falls back on "mudslinging."
Memories - LD's were a "gateway" to other targets, started with the hoops, graduated to "soda" cans, then on to balsa airplanes, then to feet - which of course had to esculate to verbal abuse and then near physical. It was a good thing there weren't any stray cats or squirrls around, back then. Good clean fun in suburbia USA.
There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dadV
Let me make one more point. I'm all for concealed gun carry laws- provided a license is given to those who have passed a rigorous background test, including some form of psychological evaluation. I don't want crazies carrying guns around but I think gun ownership is an inherent right- unless you're crazy. Which still won't stop crimes of passion.
It's a debate regarding What to do? We have this problem, here, apparently more than anywhere else. It's tied to our "liberal" gun ownership laws. I have guns. I am not afraid of guns. I have been through a home invasion and have a family. I am not wimpy regarding guns, and have an attack dog and can defend my family. Doing the Liberals are the problem schtick is not helpful. I don't think we can change gun laws to much effect- but I don't live innercity and don't have to face gangbangers. This guy was just plain crazy- who, conservative or liberal- could predict his actions?
Hey; he's a big boy now. He needs no free pass. I never abuse him verbally; I simply give him a sample of reductio ad absurdum when he gets too feisty. He has been kind of pathetic, after all. I know he's likely losing sleep over Tumbler; but why do youz two have this ungodly chip on your shoulders ? Stop worrying.
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I thought I was the son of Satan? I thought you were the third cousin (twice removed) of Satan? Or was I the "sphincter of Satan"? Damn, the not-so-eloquent Tumblerisms get blurred after a while, don't they?
Of course, you're being an amateur comedian; harmless this time.
But if Debra sees that, she'll say to herself: "I never said he was Satan. Why has he told them that?" You could yet learn something valuable from the mighty Rush Limbaugh, Dave.
Words mean things.

Mr. "Ambassador of goodwill from the hispanic community", you try to split hairs with your self-righteous attempt to portray yourself at a higher plane than your opponents. But, in light of the over-the-top rants you regularly produce, one could say you'd have to be demented to believe that.

I understand that there are liberals out their that want us to give out or sell nuclear material to nations around the world. First of all, I don’t think this is a good idea, it’s nuts with a capital N. There are too many nations that we can’t trust that they’d use it for peaceful means or that the nuclear material would not end up in the hands of terrorists. I am a little incredulous because it’s so out there stupid it could be just a rumor as far as I know. Second, liberals want gun control. Guns are NOT the problem, it’s the person with the gun that’s the problem! I don’t expect liberals to ever understand this. Third, handing out nuclear material is like handing out guns and expecting the person to use it for a hammer to build a home
Folks who were here about 8-9 hours ago might recall my prediction that this shooter was going to be either an adherent of "the religion of peace," again, or on legal "antidepressant" drugs, again. He was on the (legal) drugs, just like a LOT of school shooters have-been, despite scant-at-best media/political notice of this elephant in the living-room. If this kind of correlation with school shootings had happened with ANYillegal drug (pick your favorite!) we'd be seeing media-hysteria. Instead, due to the political & ad-buying clout of big pharma, we're likely to see little or nothing. Again. I know people hate when I say these 4 words, but "I told you so." JMR
Nope, or I'd win the FL Lotto, and that hasn't happened. This prediction was easy, because of the HUGE correlation of both radical Islam and legally-prescribed antidepressant drugs to school violence. The solution might be for doctors to quit overprescribing these dangerous drugs despite the fact that the drug companies own so-damn many politicians...And the solution for the news media might be honest reporting for a change, even if it loses them an advertiser. JMR
Just saw it on Fox News. But expect all media to blame it on hi-cap mags, the antidepressant drug angle might lose big pharma some money, and we can't have THAT!! This one will follow the media-blackout pattern of previous legal-drug-involved school shootings -- and that's another prediction (I'm doing ok today, not perfect though thanks to Bal!). JMR
They aren't going to lose money, if they do shouldn't be the matter here, drug Co.'s aren't what or who should be blamed anyway.... it is the parents and schools that recommend these drugs to students via the parents for their control of the kids, and it makes it easier on the parents too.
I know they tried to get me to okay that on my son 25 years ago or there abouts, they were going to hold him back if I didn't agree... that is how long this crap has been going on....I said no way, my ex and I got into a huge fight about it...NO WAY...he was six years old, he didn't pay attention all the time, he had ADD blah blah blah, his mind wandered, he drew to much, (he is a beautiful artist to this day) he was SIX, teachers are lazy, some of them, please do not jump on me here, my aunt was a teacher for 25 years and a great one...I blame the laziness and permissiveness of this society, the nanny state, parents not saying no, kids at six are active, as they should be...oh I could go on and on, now I am rambling, but the blame goes to the parents and teachers IMO.
Now it's OUR Fault....anyone but his, and the media is following all of this, first with Columbine it was bullies, now it is rich kids fault....http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=3048108&page=1
Pathetic piece of shite this person who did this....watch the media go with it...Shep Smith is yammering about it now....on and on they go.

Since it is tax day, I'd like to pass along to my NB friends a little something my brother just sent.
Since it is tax season....
Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can
understand.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the
bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we
pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men
(the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would
pay $3. The seventh would pay $7. The eighth would pay $12. The
ninth would pay $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay
$59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in
the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day,
the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he
said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20."Drinks for the
ten now cost just $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way
we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still
drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How
could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair
share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man
would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner
suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same
amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And
so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100%
savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings). The seventh
now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12
(25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The
tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings). Each of the six was
better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But
once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their
savings. "I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He
pointed to the tenth man," but he got $10!" "Yeah, that's right,"
exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got
ten times more than I!" "That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why
should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the
breaks!" "Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't
get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men
surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night the tenth man didn't
show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when
it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They
didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the
bill! And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is
how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the
most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for
being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they
might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat
friendlier.

The Newsbusters are furious that those on the left are going to try to use this tragedy as a reason to support stricter gun control?
Yet in the same breath they exploit this tragedy as reason that we should have less gun control.
So which side is worse? I'd say both are equally disgraceful for exploiting this national tragedy. You should refrain from attacking the behavior of others when yours is equally as offensive.
Hey, saying "we told you so" is NOT in any way "exploiting" this tragedy, it's stating the obvious. Concealed weapons permit holders WARNED ABOUT THIS VERY KIND OF EVENT. We told you so. JMR
furthermore, please explain to me how you can 'prove' that this could have been avoided had students been carrying their own guns. Speculation does not count. Stick to facts.
Strong "gun control" does not control the individual who may not be stable at any particular time. Strong gun control did not stop this death, nor did it keep the guns out of people who are know to break the law. NCPA stats, CATO stats, Open Carry laws article, Hoover Insitution , for a start.

i once had a big rooster
April 17, 2007 - 12:19 ET by tumbler_2007I recall a big rooster we had; and the awful thing that happened to the big guy.

April 17, 2007 - 10:24 ET by Hero SquadI made a joke to that effect yesterday at lunch when I first saw Ho's obituary in the paper. "There's gotta be an Imus joke in there somewhere," is how I phrased it. Either they didn't get it, or didn't think it was funny, but it started a conversation about the whole Imus thing. Which, of course, was not my intention.

April 17, 2007 - 11:22 ET by MobiusStripI think Gaggle is just disgusting opportunism, the typical paranoid circle-the-wagons circle jerk you like to engage in.

April 17, 2007 - 11:48 ET by MobiusStripMy point is that you can't stop mentally unstable people from doing this kind of thing.

April 17, 2007 - 16:25 ET by MobiusStriplate reply here- I have work to do.

April 17, 2007 - 16:33 ET by sarcasmoI have not blamed "the left," because some of them are actually sensible about firearms.

April 17, 2007 - 17:09 ET by RJ"Do you think liberals by their very nature are anti-gun?" What the heck are you smoking, Mobi?

April 17, 2007 - 18:26 ET by MobiusStripI "misspoke" on that- blame Alberto.
You preach about "mudslinging", Mobi?
April 17, 2007 - 18:47 ET by RJYou preach about "mudslinging?" That's your main stock in trade, Mobi.

April 17, 2007 - 11:57 ET by sarcasmoFolks who were here about 8-9 hours ago might recall my prediction that this shooter was going to be either an adherent of "the religion of peace," again, or on legal "antidepressant" drugs, again. He was on the (legal) drugs, just like a LOT of school shooters have-been, despite scant-at-best media/political notice of this elephant in the living-room. If this kind of correlation with school shootings had happened with ANY illegal drug (pick your favorite!) we'd be seeing media-hysteria. Instead, due to the political & ad-buying clout of big pharma, we're likely to see little or nothing. Again. I know people hate when I say these 4 words, but "I told you so."

Now; what about the other 77 hundred boys & girls on campus partaking of those same legal meds?
Think of the line-up they'd form, after another incident. Five miles long.

April 17, 2007 - 12:18 ET by sarcasmoNope, or I'd win the FL Lotto, and that hasn't happened.

April 17, 2007 - 12:22 ET by sarcasmoJust saw it on Fox News.

Tax Day. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. :-(
April 17, 2007 - 13:37 ET by Dave RSince it is tax day, I'd like to pass along to my NB friends a little something my brother just sent.
Since it is tax season....
Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can
understand.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the
bill for all ten
comes to $100.
If they paid their bill the way we
pay our taxes, it would go something
like this:
The first four men
(the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would
pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The
ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay
$59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in
the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the
arrangement, until one day,
the owner threw them a curve. "Since you
are all such good customers," he
said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of
your daily beer by $20."Drinks for the
ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way
we pay our taxes so the
first four men were unaffected. They would still
drink for free. But
what about the other six men - the paying customers? How
could they
divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair
share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they
subtracted
that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man
would
each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner
suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's
bill by roughly the same
amount, and he proceeded to work out the
amounts each should pay.
And
so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100%
And the first four continued
to drink for free. But
once outside the restaurant, the men began to
compare their
savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20,"declared the sixth man. He
pointed
to the tenth man," but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right,"
exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar,
too. It's unfair that he got
ten times more than I!"
"That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why
should he get $10 back
when I got only two? The wealthy get all the
breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't
get
anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men
surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't
show up for drinks, so the nine sat
down and had beers without him. But when
it came time to pay the bill,
they discovered something important. They
didn't have enough money
between all of them for even half of the
bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is
how our
tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the
most
benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for
being
wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they
might
start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat
friendlier.

Both Sides Exploit
April 17, 2007 - 13:45 ET bySo let me get this straight?
The Newsbusters are furious that those on the left are going to try to use this tragedy as a reason to support stricter gun control?
Yet in the same breath they exploit this tragedy as reason that we should have less gun control.
So which side is worse? I'd say both are equally disgraceful for exploiting this national tragedy. You should refrain from attacking the behavior of others when yours is equally as offensive.
Hey, saying "we told you so" is NOT in any way "exploiting"!!
April 17, 2007 - 14:02 ET by sarcasmoHey, saying "we told you so" is NOT in any way "exploiting" this tragedy, it's stating the obvious. Concealed weapons permit holders WARNED ABOUT THIS VERY KIND OF EVENT. We told you so.

April 17, 2007 - 14:08 ET bywe told you so?

furthermore, please explain to me how you can 'prove' that this could have been avoided had students been carrying their own guns. Speculation does not count. Stick to facts.

April 17, 2007 - 14:58 ET by FastEdStrong "gun control" does not control the individual who may not be stable at any particular time. Strong gun control did not stop this death, nor did it keep the guns out of people who are know to break the law. NCPA stats, CATO stats, Open Carry laws article, Hoover Insitution , for a start.
