Today's joke:
A man walked into a bar one day, walked up to the bartender and
said, "Bartender, I'd like to buy the house a round of drinks."
The bartender said, "That's fine but I'll need to see some money first."
The guy pulled out a huge wad of bills and set them on the bar. The
bartender couldn't believe what he's seeing. "Where did you get all that
money?" asked the bartender.
"I'm a professional gambler," replied the man.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓
The bartender said, "There's no such thing! I mean, your odds are fifty-fifty at best, right?"
"Well, I only bet on sure things," said the guy.
"Like what?" asked the bartender.
"Well, for example, I'll bet you fifty dollars that I can bite my right eye," he said.
The bartender thought about it. "Okay," he said.
So, the guy pulled out his false right eye and bit it. "Aw, you screwed me," said the bartender.
"That's how I win so much money. I'll just take a bottle of your best scotch in lieu of the fifty dollars," said the man.
With that, the guy went to the back room and spent the better part of the night playing cards with some of the locals. After many hours of drinking and card playing, he stumbled up to the bar. Drunk as a skunk, he said, "Bartender, I'll give you one last chance. I'll bet you five hundred dollars that I can stand on this bar on one foot and piss into that whiskey bottle on that shelf behind you without spilling a drop."
The bartender once again pondered the bet. The guy couldn't even stand up straight on two feet, much less one. "Okay, you're on," he said.
The guy climbed up on the bar, stood on one leg, and began pissing all over the place. He hit the bar, the bartender, himself, but not a drop made it into the whiskey bottle.
The bartender was ecstatic. Laughing, the bartender said, "Hey pal, you owe me five hundred dollars!"
The guy climbed down off the bar and said, "That's okay. I just bet each of the guys in the card room a thousand bucks each that I could piss all over you and the bar and still make you laugh!"

April 6, 2007 - 21:48 ET by John in CAbotg, I think it was me who made that comment about 51% of people not paying taxes...but not yet. We're just heading in that direction and when it happens it will be hard to get anything changed. Look at the front page, bottom left side of Rush Limbaughs website, at the distribution of who pays income taxes. As someone said, "convince Paul to stop the government from robbing Peter", or something to that nature.
Consider what happened when Bush, in 2005, started pushing to change Social Security. The media, demos and AARP completely twisted the whole idea out of reality. It was demagogued to death. Bush is trying to rob you of your Social Security. It was nothing like that, but nobody reported it accurately, thus the average voter had no idea what it's really about. I can't remember all the details now, but if it is done right, it would almost be impossible for every American to not wind up with more retirement funds with individual accounts than they get with Social Security.
I know federal civil service employees who have Thrift Savings Accounts. They all wind up with very, very good retirement accounts.
After my Dad retired from the Navy, for the next 15 years he paid the maximum into Social Security. Neither he nor my Mom lived long enough to draw a single cent of that Social Security account.
The participants most harmed by Social Security are blacks. Due to their lower average lifespan, they as a whole wind up benefitting the least from the program.
Demos can't afford to allow one single entitlement program to be reformed or eliminated. If they do, Americans might figure out they don't need the government to guarantee their well being. For demos, SS is just another tool for maintaining power and influence.

It's like with McCain. I really, really, really want to be able to support him. He's a true American hero. I just can't. The guy is a lousy Republican and I really, really, really don't want him as President.
I agree with you on the shallowness of Bill Clinton. Yet, he is idolized by the left. I have an acquaintance, a young woman (early 20's) and she just sings his praises. I've asked her in the past what he accomplished, of his own volition, that was noteworthy. She can't tell me one thing, even though there are a couple of things he did that are worth mentioning, there must be. Oh, yeah, that landmark peace deal he brokered with the IRA. Yeah, boy, that really knocked off one of my "Top 10 Things That Need to be Fixed" list.

April 6, 2007 - 20:39 ET by BlondeJohn,
I'm not much of a clairvoyant, particularly in regard to elections.
It's kind of funny....I was a big McCain fan in 2000 (once I shed my dem ex). I've always voted (R) however.
But since I've been on my own, I've become more and more conservative. Must have something to do with making one's own way for one's family, or somesuch.
And I find John McCain to be so sadly mistaken.
I am longing for a true conservative.
I've mentioned it before on this blog, I had an opportunity to actually meet Bill Clinton when he was the prez, but I declined. I couldn't embarass my liberal friend by doing something so crass as to not shake the hand of the President of the United States.

April 6, 2007 - 20:53 ET by John in CABlonde, well, before 2001, it's easy to see how one could have supported McCain. That was before McCain-Feingold, before The Gang of 14, before the Terrorist Detainee Bill of Rights, before he voted against tax cuts.
In 2000, I listened to McCain. I considered him. Went with Bush in the primary. Still happy with that decision. With McCain, I just get the impression that it's all about McCain.
You know, even when he is talking strong on the War, he has to add the caveat about all of the mistakes Bush made. Well, no s**t! Show me a war that hasn't been fraught with mistakes. Hell, we almost botched Grenada and Panama. If you look at both of those, you can pick them apart from here to eternity. We still accomplished the mission.

April 6, 2007 - 21:01 ET by BlondeJohn,
That's it exactly. Well, for me.
Before, before, before.
But I am now supremely unhappy with the choices on our plate. McCain...RINO. Rudy....kind of a RINO. MItt...kind of a RINO.
I'd have probably supported Allen.
As to the war...it's a war. Mistakes get made. The point is to win....regardless of the mistakes. I'm steadfast in that regard. F' em all and their idiot opinions about the prosecution of the Global War on Terror. On that point I shall never relent. Never. Never. Never.
I support the troops. Them. Their Mission. I could hardly care what the leftist libtard trolls have to say about anything on this subject....and if I get a bit crazed here occasionally on that point....oh well.
Desert Storm is looked back
April 6, 2007 - 21:32 ET by John in CADesert Storm is looked back on as a total success, as well it should. It was fast, it was effective and loss of American life was minimal. However, not everything went down so smoothly.
The first night of the air war, we had flights of MIGSWEEPS, BARCAP, SCUDCAPS, all the different missions. Hundreds of warplanes going into Iraq. We had practiced, trained constantly leading up to that event. The first night the whole tanker package almost fell apart. Tankers were overtaxed or weren't where they were supposed to be, or the plane couldn't find the tanker or get there in time. We had planes finding any airfield they could in Saudi and just landing and finding a fuel pit to get some gas to get back to the boat. My Skipper described it as "chaos".

April 6, 2007 - 21:43 ET by BlondeJohn,
I'm not surprised...I'd never heard that before, but it makes sense.
I must disagree that Desert Storm was a total success. And I lay the blame for that squarely at the feet of Colin Powell. A political general if there ever was one. He wussed out.
Had DS1 been totally successful, there would have been no need for us to be there now. Powell advocated for a stop to the war, prior to achieving our ultimate goal...decapitating the snake.
It was a travesty. As was his tenure as SecState. And his subsequent bitching about the GWOT.
Oh, I didn't care to get started on this, tonite.

April 6, 2007 - 21:59 ET by John in CABlonde, you won't get any argument from most of us who were there. Everyone I knew thought we shouldn't have stopped 'til we got to Baghdad and toppled Saddam.
From a military operation standpoint, it was successful. From a policy stand point - it wasn't.
Colin Powell doesn't get as much love from me as he does from some others. Yeah, going to Baghdad in '91 might have made Desert Storm messier than it turned out to be. But it was just another example of kicking the can down the road. So, we kicked it right into Bill Clinton's path, so he could kick even further down the road. Then George Bush kicked that can right up Saddam's rear end.
Read a Dick Morris book, Off With Their Heads, a couple of years ago. Told the story of how Clinton manipulated the Oil for Food Program, easing oil export sanctions, to help keep the price of crude low, so the political credit would accrue to him. Same as him releasing millions of barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves in 2000 to keep the prices lower and give political cover to AlGore.
