'Just an Actor' Drumbeat Begins Against Fred Thompson

Photo of Warner Todd Huston.

I have been waiting for the MSM to start the drumbeat against Fred Thompson that they so often and so boringly used (and still do) against Ronald Reagan; the refrain of "He's just an actor." Now, Rebecca Sinderbrand of the New York Observer has used the general theme for her latest piece, The Mysterious Appeal of Fred Thompson. Subtitled "Actor, Senator, presidential candidate... but what G.O.P. gap is he filling?", Sinderbrand makes liberal use of Thompson's "roles" as a foil for his seriousness as a candidate and seems to be saying that the only reason anyone is considering him is because he looks the part as a result of his "camera presence."

Sinderbrand's entire piece is dismissive and shallow in its approach to the Senator with constant allusions to his being an actor playing a role and treats the Senator as if his candidacy is an effort at bait and switch, or at the very least a silly proposition. Throughout, Sinderbrand constantly mentions the acting aspect of the Senator's life as if that is all there is to him just like they have always done with Reagan.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The "just an actor" accusation, though, doesn't ring true in Thompson's case because his acting was a late in life career move, not one that he pursued his whole life as other professional actors have done. This fact makes Thompson quite unlike Ronald Reagan who's political career, not the acting career, was the later in life pursuit.

After a brief, somewhat perplexing, and vaguely insulting discussion of the loss of Thompson's daughter in 2001, Sinderbrand launches into her attempt to belittle Senator Thompson by calling him a "mid-level actor".

But it doesn’t quite explain the mystery of how and why the 64-year-old mid-level actor suddenly finds himself a news cycle or two away from joining the top tier of Republican Presidential candidates.

Mid-level? What does that even mean? Thompson acted when he felt like taking a role. His livelihood didn't hinge on an acting career. He didn't haunt Hollywood casting offices lucky to get those "mid-level" jobs making his life as an actor somewhat pathetic. His acting is a side light, a hobby. So, what legitimacy does "mid-level actor" hold for an assessment of the man? Nothing is the answer to that question, nothing other than giving Sinderbrand an opportunity to jab at him or belittle his acting career.

Sinderbrand undermines Thompson as much as she can with several well turned phrases. He is "a man whose screen presence is ubiquitous", his "acting roles have played like slickly produced Presidential auditions", but is a man who has "ideological squishiness". All geared to make him seem a facade, unreal, and unbelievable. Sinderbrand feels that his appeal "certainly, is cosmetic".

So why Fred Thompson, and why now? Part of it, certainly, is cosmetic: Mr. Thompson’s craggy visage, comforting demeanor and, of course, considerable camera presence have inspired comparisons to Ronald Reagan from even the most level-headed G.O.P. operatives.

He just looks the part? Is there nothing to the man?

I think that Sinderbrand "misunderestimates" and too easily rejects the appeal of a Thompson candidacy. Even in the places where Thompson drifts from the most stark Conservative ideology, he presents himself as a man who honestly believes -- and has never drifted from -- his principles. Unlike all three of the top tier GOP candidates, Thompson is what he is. Guiliani has drifted back and forth on both abortion and the 2nd Amendment, McCain has drifted on... well, just about everything, and Romney has gone back and forth on the 2nd Amendment and Gay marriage. Thompson, on the other hand has done none of this sort of vote grabbing pandering to date. He seems to honestly believe in his positions and he is an articulate, powerful and even tempered speaker on top of that.

At the end of her piece, Sinderbrand tries to assail Thompson's policy positions under the rubric of "Back to Reality", as if this "reality" will bring him down, or as if it is a deviation from his "cosmetic" appeal. And she also tries desperately to hang Thompson with what she feels is the Bush millstone as well as attempting to link Thompson to the faux Libby scandal.

At a time when most G.O.P. Presidential hopefuls are putting as much distance as they can between themselves and the Bush administration, Mr. Thompson has made a point of fund-raising for Scooter Libby’s defense fund.

After a run down of some of his positions, Sinderbrand categorizes his overall history as "ideological squishiness" that might be a "problem". But her list of his "squishiness" is not very alarming, really.

Sinderbrand does make one valid point, however.

But still. Mr. Thompson is a candidate without an exploratory committee, a campaign war chest or a full-time staff. Apart from a few close friends, Mr. Thompson has, as yet, no real inner circle and no coterie of trusted advisors guiding his campaign.

This is, indeed, a problem for a Thompson run and one he'd better address in short order. A "draft" candidacy only takes you so far. To win you need an organization. And this is another area where he is "no Ronald Reagan". Reagan spent 10 years creating a grass roots organization to support his run for the presidency. Reagan ran with very strong numbers against Ford before the 1980 run against Carter, so he was no sudden candidate in any sense of the word. Reagan had a strong bid in support as well as organization.

So far, Thompson has only the well wishes of dissatisfied Conservatives. If he is serious, he'd better shake a leg and get a move on!

She ends her piece with a jab at Thompson being a cut rate Reagan and uses her last words to solidify the "just an actor" theme.

“Fred Thompson—well, he’s not Ronald Reagan,” said Mr. Keene. “But he’s done enough, and is well enough liked. He’s a fallback.”

The perfect role.

In the final analysis of her piece, Sinderbrand so out of hand rejects the legitimacy of a Thompson run for the White House that she has allowed the dismissal of him as a viable candidate to color her view making this piece just plain bad analysis.

But then again, Sinderbrand is just a journalist. And we all know how seriously to take them.

All of Sinderbrand's dismis

All of Sinderbrand's dismissal of Thompson as "just an actor" and his appeal being cosmetic and superficial, is simply her wishful thinking.

If you want to talk about cosmetic and superficial appeal, let's discuss Barack Obama. All the talk is about his fresh faced, youthful appeal. And when it comes to "ideological squishiness", as Sinderbrand describes it, Obama is the poster boy for simplistic platitudes that don't address real problems, but talk vaguely about a "hunger" and "a new kind of politics." "Where's the beef?!" as the old lady used to say in the Wendy's commercial? I guess when it's a Liberal, form over substance is OK.

Ok, Rebecca, let's deal with the superficial looks thing one last time: If you are someone like Ahmedinejad or Syria's Assad, who would you fear more across the table...Obama, or Thompson?

I absolutely agree. Fred Thom

I absolutely agree. Fred Thompson was the co-chief counsel of the Senate Watergate Committee. He was a lobbyist for major U.S. companies as well as overseas companies. And he was a Senator for 8 years. That trumps anything Obama has done, or anything Edwards has done, and when you add in his specific accomplishments, anything Hillary has done.

I think Liberals are beginning to panic at the thought of a Thompson run. After all, they remember the last time they tried to disparage someone as "just an actor", they got their clocks cleaned.

A number of potential candidates have that kind of ring about them, lately...But what I like is that in the upcoming debate, no hyperpolitical group like CPAC can shut those candidates up in favor of some foul-mouthed windbag who's not even running for anything. I'm expecting Reagan-Library, "I paid for this microphone" FAIRNESS instead, for once, and THAT will be refreshing.

Personally, I think the liberals are scared to death of a Fred Thompson candidacy. Many Americans see him as being a pretty normal, down-to-earth kind of guy, even though he did a stint in the Senate, a seat he won by simply driving around the state of Tennessee in a pickup and pressing flesh, something the big city libs would never even dream of doing.

If he can manage to put together a decent campaign staff, I think he would give The Hildebeast a serious run for her money, assuming, of course, that Barack Hussein Obama guy doesn't manage to snatch the nomination from her hairy paws.

Things have to be a little tense in the Clinton War Room these days. After all, this whole election thing was supposed to be a cake-walk for Queen Hillary, was it not?

Yeah, Hillary thought '08 was a "gimme" for sure. At least for the nomination, if not the GE. I gotta say, though, the little I know about Thompson, I like him already. Articulate, conservative, and he seems willing to stick to his guns.

Maybe he could use Newt in some capacity in his campaign? Just as a strategist, or maybe even campaign manager and chief of staff if he won? Wouldn't THAT be something? Talk about liberal melt-down!!!   ;^D

I know Newt has that "baggage" problem, but I think he should be out in front in some capacity. He's still the best voice of conservatism in the country, IMHO.

I think it's obvious that the liberal press has recognized that the GOP has a true contender, someone it's members can rally around.  This is why it is important for the MSM to marginalize Thompson as quickly as possible.  I would expect to see a lot more of this in the future to help quell any possibility of a Thompson candidacy.

I agree with all the post this morning. The very first thing I thought of was Thompson is so much more qualified the either of the top two Democ rats picks. Also with all that is going on with Iran, I would rather have him staring at that sawed off POS. If he is talking to Ahmen-a dinner-jacket, and leans over and tells him better let the hostages go in 24 hours, I think it’s going to be Ahmedinejed to blink.. big time.
IMHO, the more they (MSM) hate him, the more I like him. They see him as a legitimate force.
We (conservatives) want a real conservative. Not a country club Republican. You could be right, USA, about their being lightweights and that they have to listen to MoveOn.  Last year, Connecticut ran a test case of just such a scenario:

Ned Lamont was an anti-war lightweight who was aggressively supported by MoveOn.  They even imported staff to help campaign for him.  Even in this anti-war state, Lieberman was able to pull in voters from the left, right and middle, and he blew Lamont away in huge numbers.

Too bad Republicans don't learn from that.  Stick with your principles and the voters will respond.

"Just an actor"?  More a problem for Democrats that tend toward "character acting" than Thompson's "method acting" leading man qualities.  Isn't it hard to think of Hillary acting based on her emotional base and not see "vengence" as a motivator? >> fix my husbands rep and also find those files no longer protected for thirty years and give them a fresh thirty years - hidden from the public eyes haven.

Fred is just an actor

Man, they had better step up the rhetoric fast 'cause if this guy tosses his hat in the ring, he's gonna sweep and make Obama look like footnote. Quick get the anchors/actors to critique him for being an actor (forget Watergate experience etc). I would pay serious money to watch a pay per view debate between Fred and Hillary.

Fred Thompson

I can just see it now. Shrillary will have to take a severe bite out of her recently acquired $26 million dollars from Hollywood to send Bills thugs around to country to dredge up any skeletons in Thompson’s closet.

Sinderbrand's article is a pre-emptive strike by the friends of Hill and Bill. This, for a man who hasn’t even announced his candidacy. This, surely, is an indication that the Clinton’s fear factor is higher than Keith Richards when he snorted his father.

One can only imagine the grotesque articles written by the  NYT, WaPo, LA Times, the Boston Globe, and a plethora, (thank you Howard Cosell) of left-wing blogs, if he does.

President

In my entire life, I have never voted for a democrat. My father and grandmother used to boast that as far as they knew, no one in our family had ever voted for a democrat. If my mother had run on the democrat ticket, I would have not have voted for her.

Prior to our marriage, my wife had been a registered democrat. When we got engaged, I verbalized that we had an issue to resolve prior to the wedding and she resolved it.

If my own kid-brother, who is more like a son, was a member in good standing of the main stream media, I would disown him.

I apologize to NO ONE for feeling and acting as I do.

Further, I strongly feel that there is ONE MAN ONLY who has a chance to unite this splintered, beat up and bleeding Republican Party. Fred Thompson should understand this and realize his moral obligation to get off the fence and get into this presidential race YESTERDAY if not sooner.

When Reagan was running I tho

When Reagan was running I thought to myself, "just what we need: some d*mn hollywood clown!"  Reagan was the best president of the 20th century, outshining by far FDR.  So, Fred Thompson is an actor.  So what?  That's better than another d*mn lawyer!  Yes, I know Fred has a law degree, and acted as counsel to various committees, etc.  I also know he wasn't a ambulance-chasing litigator who channelled dead children.  Perhaps Fred will be another Reagan, or close to it.  That will be infinitely better for our country that any of the Marxist-Stalinists from the Democrat party.

Besides, why would they complain about Fred's being "just an actor"?  Aren't they enamored with such foreign policy experts as Sean Penn, Barbara Streisand, Richard Gere, and Alec Baldwin?  And, how about the domestic affairs experts like Meryl Streep?  What about their backgrounds, besides their BDS anti-Americanism, that makes them so acceptable as policy wonks?

Okay, okay. Names aren't everything, but you gotta admit that he even looks presidential. Plus he's a no-nonsense straight-talkin man (something President Bush has never quite been able to aspire to).

After all, not only was President Reagan smart, he talked plainly and honestly without regard to cowards. I think Mr. Thompson showed that ability as a Senator (even though the press rarely took note). My fear has been that we lose the election simply because all the Republicans have to offer are a bunch of wishy-washy candidates who play to the polls (and the poles). With Mr. Thompson we may have some dignity to offer the American people!

Let's put aside the fact that Carter sucked for just a moment, and we all know about Mr. Greatthings from AR.  The point is that people have not been in the habit of voting for legislators for the Presidency as of late.  Consider the last political post held by every President since FDR.  Only ONE came from the Senate.  We haven't had a Representative ascend to the Presidency in close to 130 years.

THIS is the root of my statement about Fred Thompson, and nothing else.

Good point. One I'm sure the media will gladly drown their satellites

other way around. And the (ex)Senator has Honor.

And quite frankly, I'm having a real hard time putting aside Carter's
vacuum-ous nature (and vacuous nature for that matter). Pardon, and
I'll ask the timid to look away for a moment, but everybody knows that
sucking is something that is either really darn good or something
horribly bad, and in either case a thing which can not be ignored...all
due respect to the kindly folk in Plains, Ga. currently trapped in the

Hey, only put it side two sec

Hey, only put it side two seconds to acknowledge Carter was a GA governor, and that gave him executive experience (if I need a reminder about how horrible he was as president, I'll reread a single page of Mark Bowden's Guests of the Ayatollah, or watch footage of a C-5 launching an ICBM - Carter's idea of nuclear deterrence!).  But you DO bring up an interesting point about the media.  They'll next tell us that Thompson has no executive experience - conveniently overlooking the fact that neither Obama, nor Edwards, nor Clinton have any either.

People really need to calm down.  I never once defended Carter, nor slammed Mr. Thompson.  I am merely pointing out that Presidents tend to come from executive ranks, and that I think that is the one problem with a Fred Thompson candidacy.

LOL Unsane! An ICBM on a C-5? Ah, I must have been too busy stealing my sister's KISS records to notice that one! Surely my Dad (a former jet-engine mechanic and statistical analyzer for the Air Force) must have cursed the television on that day...

On ICBMs launched from C-5s

bulletproof, I only DREAM I was making that up (as a Reserve Logistics officer, I can think of much better uses of precious C-5s!)!

Many years ago, I was watching Wings on the Discovery Channel, and this particular show covered the B-1.  It touched on Carter's cancellation of the B-1A (Reagan revived the project as the B-1B), and the alternative approach favored by the Carter administration for mobile nuclear deterrence.

That show presented footage of one option being explored: C-5s carrying ICBMs.  The ICBM was dropped from the plane after the rear door was open, fell away from the aircraft for some distance, and then launched.  I am not kidding.

For reasons beyond my comprehension (perhaps the need of C-5s to fill the role of agile combat support and global mobility come to mind), this option was not pursued after 1980.
