Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is in for a world of hurt from his former constituents should he center his 2008 campaign on his handling of 9/11 and its aftermath, the Associated Press is reporting. But in his March 30 article, reporter Larry McShane left out some crucial facts about two people he cited in his story to bolster that point: Sally Regenhard and Hank Sheinkopf.
Let's begin with Regenhard. She's portrayed merely as the angry, distraught mother of a NYC firefighter who perished on 9/11.:
"If Rudolph Giuliani was running on anything but 9/11, I would not speak out," said Sally Regenhard, whose firefighter son was among the 343 FDNY members killed in the terrorist attack. "If he ran on cleaning up Times Square, getting rid of squeegee men, lowering crime _ that's indisputable."But when he runs on 9/11, I want the American people to know he was part of the problem."
[...]
His administration's failure to provide the World Trade Center's first responders with adequate radios, a long-standing complaint from relatives of the firefighters killed when the twin towers collapsed. The Sept. 11 Commission noted the firefighters at the World Trade Center were using the same ineffective radios employed by the first responders to the 1993 terrorist attack on the trade center.
Regenhard, at a 2004 commission hearing in Manhattan, screamed at Giuliani, "My son was murdered because of your incompetence!" The hearing was a perfect example of the 9/11 duality: Commission members universally praised Giuliani at the same event.
But that's not the whole story. Regenhard is chairperson of the Skyscraper Safety Campaign, which is pushing for tighter building code regulation for skyscrapers.
Of course, building codes may have had a role to play in hampering 9/11 evacuations at the WTC, but the WTC was built decades before Giuliani became mayor and municipal building codes generally are more concerned with earthquakes and severe weather rather than passenger jets slamming at high speeds into them.
For a distraught woman to blame Giuliani for deaths caused by the sinister and soulless imagination of terrorists is one thing. For a news service to parrot those talking points as an indictment of Giuliani's credentials for president is another.
And what of Hank Sheinkopf, "a veteran political consultant" who "predicted the 9/11 criticisms could resonate beyond New York during the presidential campaign"?
For what side of the aisle does he consult?
Is he the kind of consultant that say helped re-elect Bill Clinton and regularly works for Democratic-heavy interest groups such as trial lawyers groups and labor unions? How'd you guess?:
Hank Sheinkopf has managed over 600 political campaigns in 46 states and nine foreign nations including Aruba, Bermuda, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Germany, Italy, Mexico, South Africa, and Venezuela. Sheinkopf served on the media team for the successful reelection of President Bill Clinton in 1996.
In 2004, Sheinkopf consulted for the second time the successful election of President Leonel Fernandez in the Dominican Republic. In the same year Sheinkopf developed TV commercials for SEIU that contributed to a 10 point swing in the final two weeks and a tremendous come from behind victory for Governor Anibal Acevedo of Puerto Rico. In 2005 Sheinkopf managed the successful reelection of New York Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, the only woman elected to a Citywide position in New York City.
Further, Sheinkopf has worked either on independent expenditure or in-kind expenditure campaigns coordinated by the United Auto Workers Michigan CAP, trial lawyer-related organizations in Alabama, Texas and Louisiana, the Alabama Education Association, the Mississippi Democratic Party, and the Combined Law-Enforcement Associations of Texas [CLEAT].

If you're fussing about 9/11, Guiliani is not the person to fume about, dopes. How about Bill Clinton? Democrats? Liberals? Terrorist apologists? Take a look in the mirror, co-conspirators, AP!!

Are Hillary and her Chuckie doll not to get their due? Are they not responsible for bringing home the pork? Pork for local municipalities to....say, buy newer radios? Beware folks.
Be afraid.
They had a lot to do with Tester getting in here in Montana with help from the media free of charge with Tom Brokaw aiding and abetting...
I must of received over one hundred pieces of literature in the mail-box against Burns...and I cannot tell you the automated calls they made her almost daily right before the elections ... all filled with distortions and outright lies...no way to rebut back with an automated call either...talk about furious!
There has never been a republican that they have supported lately that I know of.
In my opinion they are just plain evil.
Btw...absolutely nothing against the good fine brave men that do the actual work...it is the UNION that makes me ill...and people had better not take their force and sway lightly...they are pure leftist through and through!
Here is a great link to these guys...scroll down to the top dog that is at all the dem's political rallys...including Kerry if memory serves me...that says Giuliani something or other...I am sure there is more on the site with info...just thought I would include this...http://www.profirefighter.com/

They called me 27 times in the 30 days before the election, and the junk mail they sent the amount was staggering. They even polled me after hearing that I was from New Orleans thinking I was a democrat the pollster tried to convince me that Senator Burns was going to be charged at any time by the feds for taking bribes when the Billings Gazette had an article quoting the Justice Dept. as saying that he was not even a person of interest.

I went directly to the article where I found the above.
The immediate thought which came to mind was the union, the firefighters' union, and what political affiliation they have have.
If Mayor G should have been more cautious about an attack he could not predict, how can one define the attitudes of today's dems in terms of cut and run?

March 30, 2007 - 16:54 ET by sarcasmoHe may not have been mayor when the WTC was built, but he definitely was mayor when he made the radio-decision, and nobody wants to talk about that except victims, so I think the woman makes a good point, but as I already-said, this RINO's goin' down IMO. Cue Godfather soundtrack.

March 30, 2007 - 22:32 ET by Ken ShepherdShe may have a decent point about the radio systems. I'm not going to say one way or the other on that, but radio communication snafus or breakdowns did not kill 343 firefighters that day. The terrorists who hit the towers did.
Agreed, but if Rudy wishes
March 30, 2007 - 23:20 ET by sarcasmoAgreed, but if Rudy wishes to reap the political benefits of looking strong on 9/11, he's gonna need to hear from others about his WHOLE record before that day, and the bad radio decision was 100% Rudy's. More importantly, Rudy knew all about his sawed-off but-horny-as-all-hell (warning, ribald language required to describe a situation where a guy is cheating sexually not just on his wife but his mistress!) buddy's ties to a mafioso-company (just as the media apparently did) yet pressed for Kerik's appointment to direct Homeland Security. If that's not crappy decision-making, then I'm not sarcasmo. And to bring things back to the candidate himself, Rudy's fans here need to face the facts: Rudy's got problems keepin' it in his pants, and just like Bill Clinton (or Newt!) that means open-season WRT jokes on the subject as far as I'm concerned. When my guy gets to be the "family values" guy, you can go "all in" & bet your bottom dollar that I'm gonna take full advantage of the facts being on-my-side -- just as other Republican campaigns would if my guy had even a halfway-vague hint a good friend with severe mafia-connection issues.

March 30, 2007 - 17:05 ET by Gary HallLet's not forget Mayor Nagin..
Ken is right on with his analysis of one woman's grief, i.e.:
For the media to use it so indiscriminately for political purposes, is beyond the pale.
And today, somewhere in the news today is the embarassing fact that some 19 months after Kartina plowed through New Orleans, Mayor Nagin's city has finally come up with a development plan for parts of the 9th ward. Eventually, the City of New Orleans will allow folks to apply for building permits so that they can receive the money (some $17 billion) that the Bush administration and congress approved and funded about a year ago. The $17 billion would represent a massive federal bailout - some 200,000 homeowners stand to collect an average of approx. $85,000 each (max of $150,000) to cover uninsured losses.
Now. All together now - Just what was it that Mayor Nagin did not provide for the City of New Orleans and it's people in the years preceeding the storm? (besides leadership).

March 30, 2007 - 20:06 ET by Gary HallThanks.. just noticed that CNN just ran a sham spot in the shadow of the AP story that Ken blogged here. Focused on what Rudy did not do before 9/11, and on the poor air quality issues, etc. It was rather weird, as in the lead in video - those powerful shots of Rudy walking down the street with his team, barking out orders to some, and offering comfort to others, he is heard ordering someone to put their mask on, "put your mask on!" Then there are two guests, one from the village voice - both will offer up why he is not who the voters believe him to be.
But the CNN story goes further - they dig into all of his past personal problems and some of the funny odd stuff (like moving in with a gay couple for a while).
Can one even imagine CNN doing the same to a Clinton, or any Democrat candidate?

March 30, 2007 - 22:37 ET by Ken ShepherdIt's probably safe to say pre-9/11, probably no mayor in America imagined or dreamed that such a nightmare scenario could go down on American soil. The terrorism we'd see prior to 9/11 was few and far between, Oklahoma City being the biggest case. Before then the thwarted 1993 bombing attempt of the WTC.
Those cases involved ground-level threats from hidden explosives.
It's a bit unfair to judge American mayors by post-9/11 standards for the emergency response afterwards, and its patently unfair for the media to lend credence to political actors who are drumming it up as an issue, to the extent that the terrorists behind the actual violence that day are marginalized as THE direct cause of the deaths of 9/11.

March 31, 2007 - 01:50 ET by Gary HallCould not agree more. But the media sure seems willing to do it. Well for Rudy for what he could not know, while they pretty much gave Nagin a pass for what most of us knew was inevitable - a major hurricane striking New Orleans. (;~>

March 30, 2007 - 22:53 ET by Ken ShepherdWith all due respect to her, I don't understand how, even if you COULD make a building completely invulnerable to jets slamming into them at high speed, why would you impose such a heavy cost?
The risk of same is very low, particularly with heightened security and awareness of threat.
What's more, it's a wholly DEFENSIVE position.
The new normal is to say, "A-ha, you crazy terrorists, you can't bring our buildings down, you can kill everyone in them, but they won't friggin fall!"?
No, you make some necessary building code improvements and you learn lessons and apply them, but you do what it takes to DESTROY the enemy threatening you.

March 30, 2007 - 23:28 ET by sarcasmoPlanes got bigger. At the time, the WTC's designers did think about airplane impact, but only impact from extant planes. But that does not change my points above about Rudy's decision-making, inability to keep it in his pants, and the caliber of person with whom Rudy chooses to surround himself. If conservatives want to make a point about building (or Space Shuttle...) safety, they might want to look into the trial lawyer induced junk-science hysteria over asbestos.
