According to CNN’s Jack Cafferty, President Bush would jump at the opportunity to use the kidnapping of 15 British soldiers as a pretext to invade Iran. On the Monday edition of "Situation Room," Cafferty asserted that he hoped U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair doesn’t ask George W. Bush to join a coalition of the willing whose goal it is to free the captives.
Jack Cafferty: "Let’s hope British Prime Minister Tony Blair doesn’t ask the United States to join a coalition of the willing to invade Iran and get its hostages back. My feeling is President Bush would be on that like a bird on a worm."
The CNN host also saw scary implications in the fact that the U.S. Navy is just off the coast of Iran:
Jack Cafferty: "Meanwhile, and this is scary, the U.S. Navy has begun large scale military exercises in the Persian Gulf today, one of the biggest shows of force since the invasion of Iraq, with some U.S. Navy warships just miles off the coast of Iran. Here’s the question: ‘How should Britain go about trying to win the release of its captured sailors and Marines from Iran?...It’s a little frightening what’s going on over there right now, Wolf."
Perhaps Mr. Cafferty joins Rosie O’Donnell in theorizing that this whole incident is the second coming of the Gulf of Tonkin incident?
A transcript of the segment, which aired at 4:07pm on March 27, follows:
Jack Cafferty: "Let’s hope British Prime Minister Tony Blair doesn’t ask the United States to join a coalition of the willing to invade Iran and get its hostages back. My feeling is President Bush would be on that like a bird on a worm. To borrow a phrase from the British, the seizing of 15 sailors and Marines last week in the Persian Gulf presents a bit of a sticky wicket for the Prime Minister. And today, Mr. Blair warned Iran that negotiations to get the Brits back will, quote, ‘move into a different phase,’ if diplomacy fails. Iran won’t say where its holding the captors, won’t allow British diplomats to see them. Some hardliners in Iran want to charge them with espionage. The dispute all goes back to whether or not these 15 soldiers and Marines were in, or sailors and Marines, were in Iranian territorial waters or Iraqi territorial waters. When it comes to holding hostages, Iran is a country with a PHD. Remember the ‘70s? Iran held Americans hostage for 444 days. Now, the U.N. voted this last weekend to lay some heavy duty sanctions on Iran because it refuses to stop enriching uranium. So, the holding of these British sailors and Marines could represent an international game of tit-for-tat. Meanwhile, and this is scary, the U.S. Navy has begun large scale military exercises in the Persian Gulf today, one of the biggest shows of force since the invasion of Iraq, with some U.S. Navy warships just miles off the coast of Iran. Here’s the question: ‘How should Britain go about trying to win the release of its captured sailors and marines from Iran? E-mail your thoughts to Caffertyfile@CNN.com or go to CNN.com/Caffertyfile. It’s a little frightening what’s going on over there right now, Wolf."

Even with the Persian Gulf being 90000 square miles, it's difficult for a carrier battle group operating in the Gulf to be more than a few miles from the Iranian coast. Besides Jackie, that's known as gun boat diplomacy. We do it all the time.

Sporty,

This appears to be an extremely calculated move on Iran's part. I read a milblog a while back where Iran tried (and failed) to kidnap a bunch of Americans (I can't seem to find it).
I hope we give the Brits whatever they ask for. Maybe we'll scare Cafferty silly, um, sillier.

What's a little frightening and conveniently left out of Jack's OPINION piece is that this is a joint Naval excercise with....gasp....France. Oh my, has Jacques René Chirac defected from your pro-terrorist ranks Jack? Not to worry, somehow I know you will find a way to blame that on Bush too.

Supposed navy. I love that. Compared to ur Navy, well, even our English cousins are sad (for a once great naval power). How does it go, one U.S. Carrier has a bigger airforce than almost every other country on the planet?
I think we ought to take a couple of potshots at Iran's supposed navy. Give them a little ultimatum. Return the brits w/in, oh say, forty five minutes (march them up the street in Tehran to the Embassy, toute suite) or we'll take out one of their capital ships. In port.
BTW...what kind of aircraft do the frogs fly off their 21" shy decked carrier? I could look it up, but I'm sure you can tell me.
That's why this site is so much fun, I learn something new and esoteric here every single day!

March 27, 2007 - 21:38 ET by John in CAOh, Blonde, you really should do yourself a favor and google the de Gaulle. The 21" shorted flight deck is only one of many missteps. Shortly after it started deploying, one of it's two screws (propellors) broke. Further investigation revealed the other screw was also defective, as were all the spares. Ultimately they had to use screws from older ships, knocking almost two knots off it's top speed.
They fly Hawkeyes, Rafales, Etenards and Dauphin helos.
What cracks me up the most about these other nations aircraft carriers is they are about the size and tonnage of our WW2 big carriers, about the same as our current classes of helo amphib ships. Yeah, I'm a snob...

France has a two carrier fleet, huh? So that they always have one out of dry dock? Sounds like typical gallic inefficiency to me. Rather speedy at 25 knots, too.

Being the kind, patient, and peace loving man I am; I would give President Mahmoud Achtung-i-jihad three days to prance and preen and act tough. Then if all 15 weren't stepping off a first-class airliner looking healthy and refreshed, I would crush everything between me and them until we brought them home. Maybe this is a logical response
March 27, 2007 - 22:31 ET by E4PukeMaybe Cafferty should just view this as a logical response to the fact that the majority party in congress repeatedly tries to withdraw all forces during a middle of a war, and tries to pass resolutions that would forbid any military action against Iran. If I was in charge of Iran, and my enemies own political party was passing resolutions saying that they could not attack me, hell I would kidnap 50 british troops. Why not the british will probably not do anything against me either if America wasnt backing them up. I guess none of these thoughts cross your mind when you wake up every morning, eat a bowl of cereal, then spend the rest of the day repeating "I hate President Bush"

I don't thin it would be a go
March 28, 2007 - 11:13 ET by BruzillaI don't think it would be a good idea to try to repatriate these guys using the forces embarked on a couple of USN carriers. You would just blow up a lot of real estate, which has its own rewards, but not likely get the guys back. While the Royal Navy may not be as comprehensive as the USN, their Special Boat Service (SBS) and Special Air Service (SAS) folks are better than out SeALs and very capable of getting the job done. The only thing the Brits might need our help with would be during the extraction, but that would probably be just to deter any Iranian ships from coming after the Brits' transport.
