March 23, 2007 - 11:57 ET by balboaAnyone else here really like "Friday Night Lights"? I'm totally hooked on this show. I'm going to rent the movie and read the book, only because the TV show is so good.

March 23, 2007 - 12:11 ET by Carl KolchakI haven't seen the show or the movie, but the book is very very good. When you read the book pay attention to how the hotshot tailback at the beginning of the book is treated from start to finish, and what happens in his life.

Channel Offers Unusual Takes on War, Courtesy of Soldiers On the Front Lines"
The question I have is why the media would consider soldiers view "Unusual." Why would not these views be considered "Usual" or even dare I say it "Standard" in our society today?
A highlight from the article:
Jason Morgan, 33, a former Army specialist from West Virginia, submitted a video of soldiers buying goods in a market. It was one of the first segments to air on the channel.
"I just feel with mainstream media, they are only showing the bombs, the negative stuff," said Morgan, who was in Iraq from February 2004 to February 2005. "But all the kids were so grateful to see us. Everybody was really polite."

Glaciers
March 23, 2007 - 12:33 ET by dscottFor those interested in the mass balance of the world's glaciers, this is the 2nd reported year (2004/2005) of increasing net mass balance. But notice the verbage of the World Glacier Monitoring Service: The average mass balance of the reference mountain glaciers around the world continues to decrease, with tentative figures indicating a further thickness reduction of 0.7 m and 0.6 m during 2004 and 2005, respectively. This continues the trend in accelerated ice loss during the past two and a half decades and brings the total loss since 1980 at about 9.6 m.
The second graphic shows a deceptive cummulative chart on which they base their conclusion. The first chart shows the net mass balance. I wonder why they didn't base their conclusion on the first chart???

Thanks for the chart dscott
March 23, 2007 - 13:31 ET by Dave in TexasThanks for the chart dscott. I'm sure Al Gore will be updating his slide show soon, even though:
It only contains 25 years worth of data.
There are no corresponding charts that represent the changes in terms of percentages (hmm, wonder why).
All the data was pulled exclusively from the northern hemisphere. Do they not have glaciers in the southern hemisphere?
The data represents only 30 glaciers, even though the data at the bottom shows they had a lot more glaciers to choose from. Although I can understand why they ignored some of those, since quite a few of the measurements are "n.a.". I'm assuming "n.a." means "not available". But I'm sure they would have been bad had they been available.
Don't you just love having the actual raw data to look at instead of what eventually ends up in a one second blurb on the news?
There is one thing confusing
March 23, 2007 - 14:16 ET by dscottThere is one thing confusing about their information, when someone uses the term NET it means something has been left out, in other words NET of what? I assume what they mean is the sum total mass plus (gain) or minus (loss) that year. So on their graphic, using the 1980 mass balance as their zero line, their NET value is the difference between the 1980 mass balance and the latest mass balance. So in effect even though it shows a negative mass balance, i.e. below zero figure (a loss), the last two years show an increase in the mass balance over that of the previous years. A glaciers mass balance is not totally dependent on temperature (causing melting), but is mostly dependent on snow fall.

March 23, 2007 - 15:31 ET by MobiusStripDave, this data is hard to figure out but two things: Antarctica and Argentina are a bit south of the equator, Uruguay is certainly equatorial and most glaciers exist in the northern hemisphere. Also, when you state "But I'm sure they would have been bad had they been available" re. n/a data, that is really an argument for scientific prejudice. Data that is not used is stated as such: you "are sure" it was left out for other, political reasons. Sometimes data is simply not gathered, but there should have been an explanation. Your surety without one shows your prejudice.

March 23, 2007 - 16:23 ET by Dave in TexasAntarctica and Argentina are a bit south of the equator.
Fine, but neither the Bahia del Diablo (Antarctica) nor the Martial Este (Argentina) glaciers were one of the 30 glaciers that were used to compile the data in the summary charts.
you "are sure" it was left out for other, political reasons
No. My exact words were I'm assuming "n.a." means "not available". I'm not one to speculate on why it wasn't available. For instance, I would never imply that the reason the measurements weren't available is because those glaciers increased their size so dramatically that the teams of scientists sent to gather the measurements found it impossible to reach them. ;)
Please note the wink emoticon at the end of the last sentence. It implies that the sentence is not to be taken seriously and was simply my attempt at humor.

March 23, 2007 - 20:20 ET by misterbill1.There will be no special bilingual programs in the schools, no special ballots for elections, and all government business will be conducted in our language.
2.Foreigners will NOT have the right to vote, no matter how long they are here.
3.Foreigners will NEVER be able to hold political office.
4.Foreigners will not be a burden to the taxpayers. No welfare, no food stamps, no health care, nor any other government assistance programs.
5.Foreigners can invest in this country, but it must be an amount equal to 40,000 times the daily minimum wage.
6.If foreigners do come and want to buy land that will be okay, BUT options will be restricted. You are not allowed to own waterfront property. That property is reserved for citizens naturally born into this country.
7.Foreigners may not protest; no demonstrations, no waving a foreign flag, no political organizing, no "bad-mouthing" our president or his policies. If you do you will be sent home.
8.If you do come to this country illegally, you will be hunted down and sent straight to jail.

March 24, 2007 - 02:25 ET by John in CAIn the last forty years, liberals have had two successes - our ignominious exit from Vietnam, and Watergate. All actions on their part since then are an attempt to regain that glory. Everything they do is in reference to those two events. Every military action we take is their new Vietnam. Every political scandal is the next Watergate.
Afghanistan was going to be Vietnam all over again - a quagmire before it even started. When that turned out good, then it was Iraq. Remember about halfway to Baghdad, we had to slow down because of a big sand storm and to let the rear echelon catch up to the advance units? Quagmire! Vietnam! They haven't stopped since then.
How many references to Watergate have we heard since Bush took office? Almost everytime some political misstep is detected. The firing of the attorny generals is only the latest. The demos have been trying to hang a scandal on Bush since he took office and have failed everytime. They can't stand it since their hero, Slick Willy, was nothing but a walking scandal.
There was nothing illegal about the Vietnam War, except the actions taken by some of the anti-war crowd. The only thing immoral about it was the disgraceful action of Congress when they cut off funding to South Vietnam that allowed the North Vietnamese to re-invade and subject millions of people to death.

March 24, 2007 - 02:54 ET by joe conservativeJon Town has spent the last few years fighting two battles, one against his body, the other against the US Army. Both began in October 2004 in Ramadi, Iraq. He was standing in the doorway of his battalion's headquarters when a 107-millimeter rocket struck two feet above his head. The impact punched a piano-sized hole in the concrete facade, sparked a huge fireball and tossed the 25-year-old Army specialist to the floor, where he lay blacked out among the rubble.
"The next thing I remember is waking up on the ground." Men from his unit had gathered around his body and were screaming his name. "They started shaking me. But I was numb all over," he says. "And it's weird because... because for a few minutes you feel like you're not really there. I could see them, but I couldn't hear them. I couldn't hear anything. I started shaking because I thought I was dead."
Eventually the rocket shrapnel was removed from Town's neck and his ears stopped leaking blood. But his hearing never really recovered, and in many ways, neither has his life. A soldier honored twelve times during his seven years in uniform, Town has spent the last three struggling with deafness, memory failure and depression. By September 2006 he and the Army agreed he was no longer combat-ready.
But instead of sending Town to a medical board and discharging him because of his injuries, doctors at Fort Carson, Colorado, did something strange: They claimed Town's wounds were actually caused by a "personality disorder." Town was then booted from the Army and told that under a personality disorder discharge, he would never receive disability or medical benefits.
Town is not alone. A six-month investigation has uncovered multiple cases in which soldiers wounded in Iraq are suspiciously diagnosed as having a personality disorder, then prevented from collecting benefits. The conditions of their discharge have infuriated many in the military community, including the injured soldiers and their families, veterans' rights groups, even military officials required to process these dismissals.
They say the military is purposely misdiagnosing soldiers like Town and that it's doing so for one reason: to cheat them out of a lifetime of disability and medical benefits, thereby saving billions in expenses.
