The Washington Post can never decide whether its Page Two columnist Dana Milbank is writing news stories or editorials or "news-itorials." But his "Washington Sketch" on Al Gore's Wednesday testimony is artistic indeed, casting Gore as the "champion of scientific thought" and conservative Sen James Inhofe as the William Jennings Bryan character in "Inherit the Wind," the sad back-woods Bible-thumper arrayed against the wisdom of modernity:
Al Gore, star of an Academy Award-winning film, was in town for a double feature on Capitol Hill yesterday. But instead of giving another screening of "An Inconvenient Truth," the former vice president found himself playing the Clarence Darrow character in "Inherit the Wind."
....It was, in many ways, a 21st-century version of the Scopes trial. Only this time, Gore, like William Jennings Bryan a failed Democratic presidential nominee, was playing Darrow, champion of scientific thought. Inhofe was playing the Bryan character, defending his beliefs against the encroachments of foes such as the National Academy of Sciences, the United Nations and the Oscar-hoisting former vice president.
Milbank does allow readers to hear a little of the "savage" conservative "ordeal" Gore was under from Inhofe and Congressman Joe Barton, but mostly, Gore was a superstar:
There was opening-night enthusiasm as hundreds lined up to see Gore make his first appearance in the Rayburn House office building. The demand for seats led staffers to set up two overflow rooms. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, by contrast, attracted barely a glance as she arrived for another hearing moments before Gore's appearance.
This does not qualify as objective reporting.

March 22, 2007 - 08:13 ET by EdhenryNo - Inhofe was more of the Gregory Peck (Kill a M'bird). The lone stalwart aginst bias and predjudice (to pre-judge; you know railroad the case before all the facts come to light, lynching the US by an angry mob without a full hearing) Bush has kept us safe from attacks since 9/11, economy roaring (seems the same thing happened when Reagan lowered taxes - pattern?) freed 25 million people, number of employed all time high and black home ownership is all time high. Real bad leadership Now back to central point - WaPo is Urinalism. Sad to see a franchise go down the tubes with this type of reporting. The real story is whether there is a scientific disagreement of the cause of the temporary rise in global temps and whether the rise is part of a cycle. Dana doesn't want to admit this, so he goes for images. Makes him look weak, very weak.

Just one note to add. The biggest problem with websites open to the public is the willingness of opponents to flood the site. Some people poison the site with negativity and scorn, and then reading becomes painful. I believe the best response is to allow all opinions, and then try to avoid a spitting match (even though I get as agitated as the next guy when I get spit at). March 22, 2007 - 18:10 ET by Roger the ShrubberPersonally, I always considered Franklin Pierce to be a one of the worst presidents. He got the pro-slavery Kansas-Nebraska Act passed in 1855, I believe, which basically told settlers in US territories that they can have slaves if they pass their own laws to allow it. I realize that being pro-slavery was a big for Democrats back then, but, you should despise Pierce, if only because the Republican Party was formed, in part, to oppose Pierce's crappy governence of the USA (and was indrectly a cause -albeit one of many- of the Civil War). It was also Pierce who had the first Christmas tree in the White House, another annoying symbol of Christianity that you Liberals have railed against for years.
Oh wait, I forgot. History begins at 1970 for many Liberals.

One of the last Whigs, he emphasized in his Inaugural address that he would be obedient to the will of the people as expressed through Congress.
As such, he had the good grace to die a month later on April 4, 1841,
the first President to die in office!

March 22, 2007 - 20:43 ET by BillAdkinsYou all are good for a laugh. Why do I compare Carter and Bush and find Bush worse? Well, here we are in day 1462 of the Iraq Hostage Crisis, the worst military/strategic/foreign policy blunder in the history of the United States. America Held Hostage - day 1462 - that's why, guys. This isn't from your desired perception of the 'liberal pacifist,' it's from the perception of the educated individual with an appreciation and knowledge of history ( I await the howls, but I've got the credentials). Regardless of what you think, I believe 'world war II good, 'police action' bad, Vietnam screwed up and Gulf War '91 defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. But Iraq, man, Iraq 2003 is the crown jewel of clusterf--k brought to you by the worst president in history. Ronald Reagan, for whom I voted twice, would be sickened and humiliated at what George W. Let us just consider our first "War of Choice" as is the current phraseology in leftist circle from that time period. How could you possibly justify FDR's invasion of the French Colonies of North Africa? Our first significant casualties in WWII from offensive action had nothing to do with the people who bombed us on 7 Dec 41, but were occasioned by fighting with the Frogs.

Actually, monkeys are reknown for mimicking human behavior, and the folks most befitting that description were Sen. Boxer and her Democratic colleagues on the committee. They came to worship the High Priest of Global Warming, and regurgitate his dogma. Not one challenged any of Gore's outrageous claims, despite the fact the forecasts of the IPCC --- whom Gore routinely cites and invites us to accpettheir findings ---- are way lower than Gore's alarmist nonsense.
Inhofe had the guts to expose Gore for what he is: an alarmist, a hypocrit, and a liar.

March 22, 2007 - 08:56 ET by KC MulvilleReporters never explain the actual science behind global warming, mostly because (I'm sure) they don't understand it themselves. Instead, they only report on the part they can figure out ... that is, the partisan bickering that accompanies the debate. You've heard the old lawyer's saw that when you have facts, argue the facts, but when you don't have facts, pound the table ... same here. Reporters don’t know the science, so they sell us the only product they do have: the ongoing public relations "Us versus Them" turf battle.
The irony, however, is that since they can't explain the facts, it provokes suspicion that the case is not the slam-dunk the media reports it to be.
I personally have no idea whether global warming is real or not, or how dangerous it is ... and that's the problem. I have not been informed. I've gone to several scientific websites to see what the actual arguments are, but more often than not, I only see the evidence that supports one point of view. The non-mainstream, "issue-focused" media (so to speak) tends to be even more rhetorical than the mainstream media.
And frankly, if reporters aren’t going to advance my understanding, I don’t want to hear their personal opinions on the politics of the players. That's why the media hurts the issue. It's just deadweight. The media exists to inform, so they claim, but they aren't informing. I am in no better shape of understanding the issue (and knowing what to vote for) than I was if I never read a news report. Yet they're perfectly happy to issue constant "reportage" about the issue.
As usual, reporters don’t write to inform … they write simply to be heard.
