Today's starter: The media (as manifested in this Patterico take-down of the LA Times) continue to misreport the fired U.S. attorney "scandal." The facts show the administration compiled reasons that certain attorneys should be fired before the fact, not after.

quotation guaranteed to upset almost everyone...
March 21, 2007 - 11:12 ET by sarcasmo"What we need now is a Free Money Movement comparable to the Free Trade Movement of the 19th century, demonstrating not merely the harm caused by acute inflation...but the deeper effects of producing periods of stagnation that are indeed inherent in the present monetary arrangements… I still believe that, so long as the management of money is in the hands of government, the gold standard, with all its imperfections, is the only tolerably safe system but it is better to take money completely out of the control of government. The only way to save civilization will be to deprive governments of the power over the supply of money."
-- the late Friedrich von Hayek, Nobel Laureate in Economics, in, "The Denationalization of Money" from 1976.

So, tell me in the last 80 years or so, when was the last time the world had a 'great depression'?
Or is that just another one of your fantasies?
And exactly what system would you like to see? Explain it to me and maybe I can 'buy' into it? Be sure and tell me how the Stock Market would work under your system. Also, International Trade. Also, the managment of 'inflation' which seems to be underlying your concern.

March 21, 2007 - 12:42 ET by sarcasmoLook, we've already discussed these issues in the past, and you've already admitted to not believing the Federal Reserve was responsible for the Great Depression, which it obviously was if you ask me. No offense, but you need to go read the book as remedial history, not because I'm somehow dodging you or anyone else in any way because I don't have the time for this damn-slow site this afternoon. Look, it's a beautiful FL day. I stand here toe to toe with the left and the right all the time, but what you propose -- when we're still this far apart on the remedial history you need IMO -- is about like a "debate" with the flat earth society. But just for Acaiguana, because I like you, here's a simplified (albeit somewhat-dated -- read THAT book, new, too!) version by my good friend Dr. Mary Ruwart. She'd make a GREAT President of the United States, BTW, just like a certain other libertarian Doc who happens to be a Republican congressman...Once you've seen what she said and checked it out, please tell me again if the Federal Reserve was responsible for the Great Depression, or if the gold standard & honest money was somehow to blame instead? Thanks.

Proof of that is the last election, the majority believed the "promises" of the left, and quickly forgot what they had promised. Life goes on, as it always does, with the majority NOT caring, as long as they have their's, even if it doesn't amount to much.

A tangent
March 21, 2007 - 13:17 ET by Ten7sacaiguana said, "So, tell me in the last 80 years or so, when was the last time the world had a 'great depression'?"
This is very much a tangent and not meant as an argument for or against anything, but I had to throw this in... We know that there's not been an international financial crisis since the Great Depression, approx 78 years ago.
But what was the one before The Crash of '29 ? Give up, it was the "Hamburg Crash of 1857", aka in the U.S.A. as "The Panic of 1857". How about the one before that? "The Bankruptcy of the French Monarchy" in 1789... Before that? The South Sea Bubble of 1721... Before that? Almost everyone remembers this one b/c it sounds so silly, the Tulip-Bulb-Bubble of 1637.
So going forward from the Tulip-Bubble, 84, 68, 68, 72, there's been a major event roughly every 70-85 years. Could it be a pattern of some sort? Maybe, maybe not. I suppose if we get past say 2017 without another major crash, we'll know its not. But I will say that there could be some bubbles out there, in foreign mkts, derivatives, hedge funds... However if we listen to those in the biz, the "old rules don't apply" b/c we've entered into a "totally new paradigm".

March 21, 2007 - 13:41 ET by CaringwhiteguyI just finished listening to Rush Limbaugh's interview with Arnold Schwarzenegger and found it to be very informative. While it was congenial, it's pretty obvious they have some philosophical differences. For me, the reason was crystal clear. The more Arnold talked . . . . . . Now, I'm not happy with Ahnold since he got trounced in the special election ballot of November 2005. He's went hard left since that time. But, saying that, the guy is at least interesting and often times funny. Which is a far cry from the aptly named Grey Davis.
I probably hold the most animosity toward Ahnold over the election last November. We had a solid, rock ribbed conservative running for Lt. Governor, Tom McClintock. If Ahnold had just come out and vocally supported Tom, he would probably have won the Lt. Governor's office - giving the GOP in CA a ready heir apparent to the Governor's mansion in 2010.

March 21, 2007 - 15:17 ET by John in CANo, not much chance of Ahnold running for President.
However, there has been talk of him running for Senator in 2010. Not from Ahnold's mouth, but from CA insiders. I think he would be challenging Boxer - which no matter how far to the left he's acting, he'd have to be off the edge of the cliff to be as liberal as BaBa. That might be palatable. But, frankly, I don't see him running for Senator. Maria doesn't even like him being the Governor. And as a Senator he wouldn't be able to fly home to Santa Monica every night as he does now.
So, no. Not president and not a CA Senator.

"We are disappointed in the court's decision that the jury instructions were
not sufficient. We expect that when the case returns to New Hampshire the
Department of Justice will vigorously pursue the prosecution and conviction
of Mr. Tobin. The Court did find that nothing precludes a rational jury
from concluding that Tobin was a conspirator or that he knew and agreed to
the general means of the disruption of Democratic Party phone lines.
This decision will not have any impact on our request for an investigation
into whether political considerations played a role in Department of Justice
decisions relating to this case.
"The National Republican party has invested millions of dollars defending
James Tobin, but we believe that despite their best efforts to continue
stonewalling the phone-jamming scandal, justice will be served."
