On this morning to promote his new book former House Majority Leader Tom "The Hammer" DeLay didn't receive the kid glove treatment NBC's Meredith Vieira usually reserves for Hillary Clinton, as Vieira repeatedly questioned DeLay on his ethics but when the Today co-host hit DeLay over Iraq, The Hammer, hit back.
As Vieira deigned to interpret opinion polls on Iraq she piously proclaimed: "Well I think they are saying though, sir, not to beat a dead horse here, but I think they are saying they want American troops out by the fall of 2008." To which DeLay hammered back: "I didn't know you spoke for the American people."
Of course Vieira didn't just go after DeLay on Iraq but also hit him with charges of corruption as she charged: "In your book you say that one of the reasons Republicans lost control of the Congress was because of a general perception of Republican incompetence and lack of principles. But many critics say that you were part of that problem."
The following are all of Vieira's questions to Tom DeLay during the first half hour of the March 20th Today show:
Meredith Vieira: "Tom DeLay knows all about the bare-knuckle brawls in the Beltway, the former House Majority Leader was known as 'The Hammer,' when he served in Congress and now he's written a book called, No Retreat, No Surrender: One American's Fight. Mr. Delay, good morning to you."
[Tom DeLay]
[On screen headline: "DeLay's American Fight, Has The GOP Lost Its Way?"]
Vieira: "When we were listening to Norah's report just then you turned to me and said, 'Only the beginning.' What did you mean by that?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "What would you advise Mr. Gonzales to do if you still had a position in Congress?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Fight?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "You say to fight but, and you, the name of your book is No Retreat, No Surrender but didn't you give up your battle?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Well but in essence you did, you stepped aside."
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Let me talk about that a little bit because it's not just Republicans in the White House that are in trouble, it's the Republican Party in general and in your book you say that one of the reasons Republicans lost control of the Congress was because of a general perception of Republican incompetence and lack of principles. But many critics say that you were part of that problem. That you were cited by the House Ethics committee numerous times, indicted on campaign finance, finance related charges and that two of your top aides pled guilty in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. So what responsibility do you think you bare?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Where do you disagree?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "So you don't feel you bare any responsibility for this perception of Republicans being corrupt?"
DeLay: "I haven't done anything wrong. I haven't done anything wrong. This is, this was a strategy, a concerted strategy by the Democrats announced 12 years ago by the campaign committee and Pat Kennedy. That they were gonna demonize Tom DeLay. It was on their Web site. And so-"
Vieira: "It worked."
DeLay: "It worked. Unfortunately."
Vieira: "I want to switch gears for a minute and, and talk about your appearance on Meet the Press on Sunday where you were part of a panel discussing the war in Iraq and you had harsh words for those who support a date for troop withdrawal from Iraq. Let's take a look at this."
[Tom DeLay from Meet the Press: "When you tell the enemy what your strategy is that's aiding and abetting the enemy because they could use that strategy to come back and harm your soldiers."]
Vieira: "In a poll taken last week, sir, 59 percent of Americans say they agree that troops should be removed by the fall of 2008. So does that mean that more than half of Americans are unpatriotic? That they're, they're abetting the enemy?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "How is that different? The American people, 59 percent are saying they want the troops out by the fall of 2008."
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Because they think that it's not working."
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Well I think they are saying though, sir, not to beat a dead horse here, but I think they are saying they want American troops out by the fall of 2008."
DeLay: "Well I don't, I didn't know you spoke for the American people."
Vieira: "No I'm not. I'm speaking for the poll, actually. I'm just relating the poll to you, 59 percent say that. I just want to make sure that I understand you when you say that those people are not unpatriotic for taking that position."
[DeLay]
Vieira: "You said that President Bush, last question, is a, is a compassionate man but not really a conservative. Who do you think is going to be the rising voice of the Republican Party come 2008 in the elections? Of the candidates you see."
[DeLay]
Vieira: "But among the candidates that are out there now. Is there one that, that, in your mind, seems to be the best one to replace the President?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "You don't have a favorite?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "You miss the Hill?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Had enough?"
[DeLay]
Vieira: "Tom DeLay, thank you very much for joining us this morning. The book is called No Retreat, No Surrender."

mobius, Ronnie Earle is a sleezy piece of crap
March 20, 2007 - 18:01 ET by RJMobi, a little research would tell you that the charges are specious, brought by a rogue prosecutor. That prosecutor, Ronnie Earle, is a sleezy piece of crap who has a reputation for using his office for blatant politics. The only reason the case has dragged on so long is that Earle is doing everything he can to delay the court proceedings. It's his usual tactic to make a series of specious charges and then keep his targets dangling as long as possible. Winning or losing don't matter. The only reason the charges were brought at all is that the prosecutor went to grand jury after grand jury, shopping them over and over until he finally got a brand new, just seated jury he could browbeat into handing down an indictment.
EDIT: I was responding to Mobius. How did my post end up at the top of the thread?

I am not kidding..what he has gotten away with is beyond despicable.
Reminds me of whats his name that finally got taken off of the Duke rape case, after the damage was done.
These runaway prosecutors need to be held accountable and do some serious time.
Tom Delay stepping down hurt the republican party and House as far as I am concerned.
He is a great man and patriot.

March 20, 2007 - 17:27 ET by MobiusStripWhere are DeLay's comments? Redacted? Also, the statement that she "hit him with charges of corruption as she charged:" is pure spin. DeLay is under indictment for money laundering, election fraud and other charges. He must go to court. So the 'MSM' hit him with charges? No- the prosecutor did. The MSM asked him about this as he tries to sell a book and help to exhonorate himself- or pay for his defense. The reporter had no hand in "charging" him as she "charged". Nice try on the word play, but no meat on the bones, yet again. And for the record, the conservatives should jettison this guy and disavow him, because he is just plain political scum.

March 21, 2007 - 00:54 ET by liberal_bug_zapperMobius... you are scum. You are scum for presuming guilt before the verdict. You are scum for proclaiming guilt before anything has been proven. The prosecutor still has to take this case to court, and prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the charges are true. The problem is, you liberals believe that conservatism is a crime, and so we're all guilty. I don't believe that our side will get a fair trial any longer as long as you can pack the jury with loons. For example, why was the leak investigation pursued for years after Fitzfong found out that it was Armitage that leaked Valerie Plames name? It was purely political.
Now I can call you scum because I have proof of what you wrote... right here on the pages of NewsBusters, which makes my case. Yet you have zero proof of any wrong doing from DeLay.

I am glad there are some conservatives who are willing to say what they feel. Tom didn't care if he upset poor Meridith or hurt her feelings. Good for him. More conservatives need to do this. No more backing down! If they phrase the question as a lie, confront them with it!!!

March 20, 2007 - 17:45 ET by mostlymoderateThank Goodness for Tom Delay? Make sure you think about that statement. Delay has a lot to do with why Nanci Pelosi is where SHE is at. Delay made some big mistakes and the entire Republican party paid dearly for those mistakes.
Delay thrown under the bus
March 20, 2007 - 18:00 ET by Pragmatic-ManIt was no fault of Delay that he was thrown under the bus by his RINO compadres. Wonder why he knows moreso than anyone else just how weak the Republicans in congress are? Because they did not stand up for him when the lib-wolves closed in. So yes, thank God for Delay, that even after his slaughter on the hill, he still has a permanently attached PAIR to come back and hit the conservatives upside the head for a reality check. The Republican leaders in the party paid dearly for losing sight of their conservative base, and moderating. Delay stayed strong. Still is.

Could have also had something to do with his political pandering during the Terry Schiavo incident. Could have something to do with his hypocracy when he consented to ending the life of this own father who was on life support. It could have been Delay's endorsing of violence against judges. Also, there was that little Abramoff scandal where Abramoff gave gifts to Delay. Maybe it was the illegal fundraising? March 20, 2007 - 18:58 ET by Pragmatic-ManSo, mele, who do you stick up for? I stick up for Republican leaders who stick to conservative ideas. Interesting that all of the things you lay out are not being pursued by the rabid moonbat unpatriotic libs. I don't remember seeing Delay being prosecuted in the Abramoff scandal. Hmm, suppose you are off on this one. Abramoff was involved as a lobbyist with many congressmen who were not aware of his unethical ways. Be careful where you point that, it just might ricochet. And as far as violence against judges, your accusation is patently false. Go find it. Not there. He said the Schiavo judges would have tro answer for their decisions. Duh! All judges answer for all of their decisions. It's called a conscience, and a constituency if they are elected, and impeachment if serving for life. Still thinking I am uninformed? Regarding Schiavo, he was trying to keep the government out of the issue, like you should keep your claws out of his personal life. Lest your infested liberal mind forget, Schiavo's "husband" had abandoned her, and the argument was to leave the decision to her family...KINDA LIKE HIS OWN FAMILY DECIDING on the fate of his father. IT is a family affair. Regarding the media, you should open your EYES: conservative republican = red meat to the rabid left wing media. Go back to the drawing board, mele, and try to put together a relevant argument. Start with justifying 3700 abortions every single day, 155 per hour. Infants, prenatal, being slaughtered in cold blood, more every SINGLE DAY than after four years of noble battle in Iraq. This is a pace equalled only by the Nazi extermination of the Jews. It certainly does not appear in the Constitution of the Unted States, nor in any Amendment to it. All our Constitution does is prevent the government from setting up a national religion.

abortion and separation of church and state
March 22, 2007 - 22:48 ET by m1xrammrsimeli,
Religion has always been part of our government, since this Christian nation was formed. Our U.S. Constitution is based on principles directly from the Bible. Thousands of Bibles have been ordered by Congress.
The Declaration of Independence says we the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It states that these are unalienable rights, i.e. from God, specifically "endowed by their Creator".
You talk about the "Separation of Church and State" yet you do not even know what it means. As per Thomas Jefferson, the government was not to interfere with religion! So if a teacher prays in school, or tells her students she teaches because Jesus calls her to, and the principal fires her, the firing would violate "Separation of Church and State." It's a simple principle, don't interfere with God's ministries.
Earlier you mentioned that a fetus is not alive. If this were true, how could people be prosecuted for its death? Two cases have already found and convicted people of murder, for the deaths of unborns.
The real problem is common sense. Obviously an unborn is alive or it would miscarry. Like rightside says further down, why have surgical techniques been developed for unborn if they are not alive. Why are people upset by the new law requiring women to see the fetus before aborting it? Because they will see the living baby and know what's at stake.
m1xram
This is factually incorrect.
March 20, 2007 - 19:25 ET by NL207This is factually incorrect. Were your statement about the life of a fetus actually true of American jurisprudence, then Scott Petersen could not have been charged with homicide in the death of his unborn infant son, Connor, who never took a breath on his own outside his mothers womb.
Since Mr. Petersen was charged with and found guilty of the homicide of his unborn son, you are proven incorrect.

So I thank you because I get furious about this subject.

250 dead children since your first post, mele
March 20, 2007 - 20:07 ET by Pragmatic-ManMele, 250 dead, cold, aborted, landfill children since your first post. Thought I would remind you of your complicity to the murder of helpless children. Democrats, a beacon for the oppressed? You are a cowardly liberal. Noticed that you had no rebuttal to my factual deconstruction of your little jihadi posting. By the way, who is your political mentor? I asked you a question in my first post. Scared to tell us that you idolize Stalin? Well, then let me say it for you. There, feel better? It is all about "feelings" to you, right? Feelings, like those of the helpless little children murdered, that haunt you in your restless sleep. I just might go pray. Thank you for the reminder. God bless you, cause I sure won't!
pragmatic-man
March 20, 2007 - 22:24 ET by BlameTheMediaI think you are saying that if you consider yourself a democrat or republican you must therefore believe everything that party does to the letter. Is that correct? Because, I am against abortion, and against the war. I'm for fiscal conservatism and as a result very against bush's fiscal policies (ask newt about this one). I don't think it's productive to pre judge a person's whole perspective on the world based on so little. Not everyone follows a party line's talking points because that is what they are told to do, or think they should do because if they don't they are not patriotic. Those that think for themselves with the ability to take in information and even change their minds are certainly higher order thinkers. Anyone can parrot back talking points.

March 20, 2007 - 21:52 ET by Pragmatic-ManNeed I remind you, mele, that in your womb, a fetus is as good as dead. Respiratory system? You mean the one that wails out during late-term abortions, that tiny coughing beginnings of a first cry just before the "doctor" buries a spike into the brain? You mean that one? I thought so. Go hug your children, and pray that they do not kill your future grandkids like you wish upon other would-be grandparents.

babies in Africa
March 20, 2007 - 22:05 ET by Pragmatic-Manmele, thanks for the reminder of the children in Africa. They do suffer quite a bit under the rogue governments rife with corruption throughout that continent. It is simply a matter of resources for me. I have limited time, and with the constant need to fight back the liberal hordes trying to kill American children and undermine the troops, I can only do so much. But once this battle here is won, and the USA is rid of the moonbat blight, I will be expanding my horizons of influence to other corrupt politicalities. God bless you for pointing this out.
Regarding your abortion dodge... nice out for you, refusing to speak about something off-thread. Seems this is a bit too "personal" for you, hmmm.
Regarding the Iraq war... why don't I fight for the Iraqis? I do, here in the USA everday against bad patriots just like you. I only regret that I do not have my boots on the ground over there. Would if I could.
"Need I remind you that
March 20, 2007 - 23:48 ET by Wilbur747"Need I remind you that in American jurisprudence, a fetus is not alive until its respiratory system works outside the mothers womb."
If that's the case, then why was Scott Peterson charged and convicted of TWO murders, that of his wife and unborn child?
Regardless of what liberal lawyers say, the killing of an unborn baby (especially at the moment of birth as in partial birth abortion) is considered infanticide by the majority of civilized countries.
If a fetus is not alive until it breathes air, then I guess the National Geographic Special showing live babies grasping each other and blinking in a mother's womb is totally false and made up. I guess when my best friends' wife felt her baby kicking inside her womb, and her her heartbeat...well she must have been imagining it. After all, in your words, it's not alive, so it must've been gas.
Might I suggest that you attend law school...and pass the Bar before you start quoting American Jurisprudence.
On a side note, I'll bet that there are many people on this forum who did indeed serve in Iraq as well as many other battles and wars, including those started by your god-child, Bill Clinton.
These men and women did indeed do the noble thing...while you sat on your butt whining. They, along with many, MANY veterans fought for your right to say ignorant things. They stood then and stand now ready to help ensure our freedoms, all at great personal expense. They don't whine and insult people like you do.
Funny how, like all liberals that when you're backed into an intellectual corner, you resort to insulting people and getting defensive. I think he's in over his head!

You just called someone a chickenhawk, didn't you mrs.? As you said, "...such a feeble mind".
Well, I support the war in Iraq. Did from the beginning and still do. Not only is it a noble cause, it's the right national security issue. Now, you wanna call me a chickenhawk? Huh, you going to call me a chickenhawk?
Do you support policing efforts of crime in our cities and communities? You do? Then why aren't you a law enforcement officer? Huh? Huh? What are you, a criminal dove?
Do you support having a public safety effort to fight fires? You do? Then why aren't you a fireman? Huh? Huh? Why not!? Are you an arson dove?
Such a feeble mind, indeed.

March 20, 2007 - 18:31 ET by NoMoreClintonsJust where did DeLay "hammer" Ms. Viera? One flippant comment does not equate to a hammering . . . and what happened to DeLay's comments? BJ Clinton
March 20, 2007 - 21:06 ET by Pragmatic-ManBill Clinton gave our nuclear weaponry state secrets to the Chinese, was complicit towards Bin Laden, abandoned the fight against terrorism in Somalia, had his way with a "barely legal" intern in the Oval Office, lied to a grand jury and ADMITTED that he did so, and committed rape before his disgraceful presidency.
His reward? He is heralded by the left, their political messiah, can do no wrong, the media darling.
Look past your nose, joey! See if you can muster up one single thought process that lends credence to your manchurian moniker.
