Global Warming Expedition to North Pole Cancelled Due to Cold and Frostbite

Folks, you can’t make this stuff up. However, I sincerely beg all readers to properly stow potables, combustibles, and sharp objects before proceeding further.

An expedition to the North Pole to bring attention to global warming was cancelled due to the extraordinarily cold weather. I kid you not. As reported by the Associated Press Monday (emphasis mine throughout):

The explorers, Ann Bancroft and Liv Arnesen, on Saturday called off what was intended to be a 530-mile trek across the Arctic Ocean after Arnesen suffered frostbite in three of her toes, and extreme cold temperatures drained the batteries in some of their electronic equipment.

"Ann said losing toes and going forward at all costs was never part of the journey," said Ann Atwood, who helped organize the expedition.

I’m verklempt, and having difficulty typing through the tears of laughter. But, unlike our intrepid explorers, I must go on for the benefit of mankind:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Then there was the cold - quite a bit colder, Atwood said, then Bancroft and Arnesen had expected. One night they measured the temperature inside their tent at 58 degrees below zero, and outside temperatures were exceeding 100 below zero at times, Atwood said.

"My first reaction when they called to say there were calling it off was that they just sounded really, really cold," Atwood said.

<Johnny Carson voice> How cold was it? </Johnny Carson voice>:

She said Bancroft and Arnesen were applying hot water bottles to Arnesen's foot every night, but had to wake up periodically because the bottles froze.

Ouch. That’s cold! Marvelously, it was much colder then Bancroft’s trip 21 years ago:

The explorers had planned to call in regular updates to school groups by satellite phone, and had planned online posts with photographic evidence of global warming. In contrast to Bancroft's 1986 trek across the Arctic with fellow Minnesota explorer Will Steger, this time she and Arnesen were prepared to don body suits and swim through areas where polar ice has melted.

<insert hysterical laughter here>:

Atwood said there was some irony that a trip to call attention to global warming was scuttled in part by extreme cold temperatures.

"They were experiencing temperatures that weren't expected with global warming," Atwood said. "But one of the things we see with global warming is unpredictability."

Yep. It was soooooo cold up there because of global warming.

Talk amongst yourselves, for I’m having trouble breathing and might need medical attention!

Although not as funny as Noel's article, there was also this one over at Junk Science. Kitten Boom Litters Shelters. A couple of quotes:

It's raining cats and climate change is to blame.

Cat
owners let their pets outside when it's mild and keep them indoors when
it's cold. So the moderate temperatures of recent fall and early winter
seasons translates into more opportunities to breed and wander off.

But later on, there was this beauty:

We've just had two cats come in with frostbite that are about to lose their ears.

Must be some sort of new "moderate temperature" frostbite that I'm not familiar with.

What with the cancellations of the conference on GW because of blizzards, calling off the showing of AlGores movie because of snow, record snow falls around the country, near record lows in many parts of the country. Predictable weather - ah, the good old days. I just love that conclusion:

Soooo, back before global warming (hmm that would be some 12,000 years ago, by the way) the weather was predictable? Who could we call and ask?

The IPCC involves numerous experts in the preparation of its reports. However, chapter authors are frequently asked to summarize current controversies and disputes in which they themselves are professionally involved, which invites bias. Related to this is the problem that chapter authors may tend to favor their own published work by presenting it in a prominent or flattering light. Nonetheless the resulting reports tend to be reasonably comprehensive and informative. Some research that contradicts the hypothesis of green-house gas-induced warming is under-represented, and some controversies are treated in a one-sided way, but the reports still merit close attention.

A more compelling problem is that the Summary for Policymakers, attached to the IPCC Report, is produced, not by the scientific writers and reviewers, but by a process of negotiation among unnamed bureaucratic delegates from sponsoring governments. Their selection of material need not and may not reflect the priorities and intentions of the scientific community itself. Consequently it is useful to have independent experts read the underlying report and produce a summary of the most pertinent elements of the report.

Finally, while the IPCC enlists many expert reviewers, no indication is given as to whether they disagreed with some or all of the material they reviewed. In previous IPCC reports many expert reviewers have lodged serious objections only to find that, while their objections are ignored, they are acknowledged in the final document, giving the impression that they endorsed the views expressed therein.

Help needed!

Noel,

Please help me out with a problem I and others soon will be having:

Just shy of 3 weeks from now, we will be celebrating April Fools' Day.

Now because of people like you, I will probably hear some silly thing that somebody makes up and think it is true!

This cannot be a serious article. This had to be from "The Onion" or some Faux News Source.

They were going to go swimming? In the NORTH POLE?

I hate to be the newsbusters Preacher but this reminds me of a bible verse in Romans Chapter One.

22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

These people are fools. They worship the earth and look like idiots and morons.

OH LORD IM SORRY FOLKS, BUT THAT JUST MADE MY WEEK. AND IT IS ONLY MONDAY!!!!

we're probably still going to

we're probably still going to lose the GW debate but at least we will have had a good giggle or two along the the way. thanks for the smile.

Oh the dems will probably for

Oh the dems will probably force things through. The dems complain about Bush preying on peoples fear. They're doing what they complain about.

We'll pay a lot more for everything. The rich demos will still have their limos and private jets. People will starve in the 3rd world because the greenie weenies wrecked the economies. Killed the african dream. The SE Asia dream. Disease will get even worse in the 3rd world because people will be poorer.

And we'll all be reminded why we voted the dems out of power 10 years ago.

But the thought of this dim wit hobbling around. So arrogantly she she froze them off while ignoring its cold in the arctic in winter. That one is priceless.

danbo, When I read about the frozen toes, I felt badly for this person. But since you put it that way....now you've got me laughing. These people are clueless.

Some endevors aren't very for

Some endevors aren't very forgiving of errors. In caves you have at least one back up for everything. 2 for lights. You never penetrate beyond a third your air. And unfortunately, sometimes that isn't enough. There are survival rules. I can see the arctic as even more unforgiving.

If you get involved in something like this, you know or should know what you're geting into.

Look at the wording. She was going to swim across the expanses of "melted ice". This is still winter. Any breaks are probably caused by tides and currents. And can also quickly close back up. (I hope for her, the body suit was a dry suit. If not she's even more of a dim wit.)

You expect the unexpected. Seems she was caught up by the hype. And didn't expect the possibility of it getting that bad. It's like a cave diver being supprised by a silt out.

It's sad she lost her toes. But looks like she got caught up by the hype. And was going to show how warm it was. Well looks like it was danged cold.

danbo,

I have a friend who is a big cave diver, as well as doing the big technical dives off shore.

Not for me.

I still don't know what was trying to be proved by this little, um, excursion.  This woman was bloody lucky that the sum total of three toes was all she lost.

Unbelievable stupidity, actually.

I remember you telling me, Unfortunately, I haven't had much chance to go back in since I started training last summer. Need to practice. (Though the cost of all the gear is making me question how far to go with caves or tech diving.)

If you ever dive up at Ginnie Springs. Stick your head in the entrance of the grand ballroom. (They may not let you dive with a light if you're not certified.) It's a neat cavern.

A lot of climbers have lost fingers and toes. And more. I understand the body of a climber is still up on Aconcagua near the summit. Too high for anyone to bring him down.

Danbo, a friend of mine found a leg at the bottom of a climb in Yosemite several years ago.  I used to rock climb at a decent level of difficulty, but I can't do much rock climbing anymore due to back problems.  I never got into alpine climbing.  I don't like the cold.

You know, it is winter up there.... still... and in the winter in the arctic.... at this particular time, the sun only breaches the horizon for very short periods before plunging the whole arctic back into darkness for another 20 or so hours. The fact that it's as cold as it was should have come as no surprise to anyone with half a brain.... unless, the person going up there completely and 200% believes the whole myth of "Global Warming".... the name itself is a misnomer, and any real scientist (which I feel I can count myself in that group of world wide scientists since I am a scientist... not a climate scientist, but does that matter?) knows that climate change has happened for as long as this planet has had an atmosphere

I started my cave diving training. (Probably a lot easier on the body than rock climbing. So old men like me can do it.) I'm still new at it. But many of the people I've talked to who have been cave diving a while, personally know someone who is no longer around. (There are grim reaper signs at cave entrances for a reason.)

danbo,

Thanks for that link.  That would turn me around in a second.

One little problem with cave diving for me...I'm kind of claustrophobic.  I even have a bad time with high speed elevators.

Good luck with your training.  I know it's extremely technical.

Mornin' Blonde,Noel's post

Mornin' Blonde,

Noel's post has me in tears it is so funny. These GW True Believers or such a hoot.

Haven't run in to our little German friend lately. I think he is avoiding me. :-)

Speaking of dangerous pursuits, I played a lot of golf over the weekend with my brother. A private club is the only way do go. Slipped and fell on my hip climbing out of a bunker. Nice big bruise but nothing broken.

Oh, and if you haven't heard, I'm on my way to Hell now, according to Debra.

Well, I got to get busy. See y'all at lunch.

And morning again Blonde. I u

And morning again Blonde. I understand the claustrophobia. If the ceiling is only 4 or so feet up. You're probably going to be banging your tank on the ceiling. If you're wearing doubles. The banging can roll off the valve on one of the tanks. You go to switch tanks. No air.

If you go too close to the bottom. In a low flow cave, one fin stroke can disturbe the accumulated silt on the bottom. Viz goes to zero. You have to find your way out by braille.

But, if I never go into a cave again. I will say. This did more to make me a better and safer diver than anything I've done before.

Maybe the arctic should follow the example of cavers. Putting grim reaper signs along the ice. "Warning. It may be cold up there."

This story was also reported by Mark Weaver on WMAL on my way to work. That's a great way to start a work day (yes, sometimes radio IS work) with a good laugh.

By the way, I met Anne Bancroft and Liv Arneson about 2 years ago. I was running the board for the Mimi Geerges Show. It's an interview show on WEBR and on XM. They seemed to be nice gals. I guess they could'nt resist trying to top Don Quixote.

Dang! It looks like you beat me to the Don Quixote reference. It's just soooooooooo obvious. Still chuckling this far down the page.

jh..Whose we that you are tal

jh..

Whose we that you are talking about?

If you mean your left side of the aisle...then you are el correcto.

How are we going to lose? I

How are we going to lose? If you just be patient, and educate everyone you know who's a lib or on the fence about this with logic and sound scientific evidence like what was presented in the "The Great Global Warming Scandal", you can begin to turn the tide.

We as conservatives need to stand up and start taking our country back from the leftists and Stalinists. We do now live in an America divided, and we on the right, who truly believe in the right to privacy and minding our own business lived up to our beliefs. But we've been silent too long while the moral busybodies have been hard at work subverting our freedoms right out from under our noses.

Most everyone knows the the old saying of a frog in tepid water brought to a boil, in contrast to the frog thrown into already boiling water right? Well, we've been in a tepid pot... and it's beginning to boil. Some of us can see it and others think there's still time to negotiate the heat.

Stand up for what you believe. Start taking back the intellectual argument. Never let one stand or say to yourself that the argument isn't worth your time... because the instant you do that... they win. This is a war, whether you believe it or not, and while there are no real shots being fired as of yet, the war of words and for the hearts and minds (mostly the minds) of America's youth has been waged for years.

You ask, "Well what can I do? I'm just one person!" I know, I get frustrated too and let my negativity run away with me, but logic, and my belief that we're fighting for our freedom overcomes my anger and steels my resolve.

My friend, it is up to you and I and all conservatives to jump into the breach and hold back the surge of rampant neo-Stalinism that is being forced upon our youth and rammed through our congress as environmental laws or even as just PC propaganda. It is time we say 'Enough is enough!'

I've got your back if you've got the stones, but remember the wizened words of someone great (methinks it could have been Murphy) "Never get into a foxhole with someone braver than yourself!"

As Dr Robert E Stevenson, oceanographer, said.

It sometimes seems as if I’m living in a “time-warp” in which some people, and scientists, are unaware that rational life existed before their birth—or before they got out of the sixth grade. Is this for Real

Is it April 1st or something? Are there people, out there, that actually believe the Arctic is warming up that much? I think these women should sue Ellen Goodman, who used that picture of the "stranded" polar bears in her commentary in January.  These people probably believed that was a recent picture and decided to go for a jaunt and swim at the North Pole.

I smell something of this coming on the 1/2 Hour News Hour.

"But one of the things we see with global warming is unpredictability."

Ah yes, the Witch Finder and Witch Trials hypothesis in manmade global warming.

Just like ye olden days in jolly Olde England and spiffy New England. The mob would gather for the traditional pastime of drinking, cavorting and burning a few helpless women at the stake.

No matter what the poor females accused of “witchcraft” did or said proved that they were, in fact, witches. The mob found signs in everything to prove their idiotic ravings.  Does that sound familiar?

The answer is socialism. But only if the question is:
"What's the fastest way to impoverish, enslave and destroy people?"

Maybe it's the Julian Simon

Maybe it's the Julian Simon-fan in me, and no doubt it's now illegal these days due to recent "port security" concerns which for some reason didn't merit actual debate, but I think a way to slightly-cool the invective might be found through both sides' wallets. I'm talkin' some public climate-bets, here. For example, I'd buy-in to a proposition -- aside, of course, from the dangerous & illegal terroristic threat to "port security" it obviously-poses -- like: "I bet $1000 that changes in earth's climate are likely to continue to mirror changes in the Martian climate over the next 5 years."

And with global warming bei

And with global warming being the non-falsifiable theory that it is (thus, making it completely unscientific), these bitterly cold temperatures are just more proof that global warming is true, just as incredibly high temps prove it's true, or normal temps for that matter. Nothing can disprove the theory to these people.
