SAN FRANCISCO Peace activists continue to camp outside the San Francisco home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
They've been there since yesterday, demanding that Pelosi take a tougher stance against the war in Iraq.
After crossing the Golden Gate Bridge yesterday, the group marched through the Presidio and arrived at Pelosi's Pacific Heights home around four o'clock in the afternoon.

March 12, 2007 - 14:51 ET by John in CAFirst, I'm no fan of Chuck Hagel. But, other than his views on the war and GWOT, he has a very conservative voting record. However, his opposition to the war is enough to turn me away from him. I'm also not getting good vibes concerning his views on America's role in the world and the way the world's shifting politics needs to be addressed by the United States.
A global political readjustment is also in play today…and will respond
to America’s leadership. What is at stake for the future of America is
larger than just American politics. Politics is simply the mechanism democracies use to affect responsible change. The world is not static,
it is dynamic.
Sounds too much like appeasement and global tests for my liking.

March 12, 2007 - 15:25 ET by Chris NormanHagel may have had a conservative voting record in the past (I never followed him), but his loudly hostile anti-Bush stance goes way beyond what is necessary, to be merely following his beliefs or conscience, regarding the war in Iraq. In fact, I believe I saw him not too long ago either advocating or announcing opposition to some position on a non-military issue that showed me that he has "grown" in Washington and is no longer a conservative. I wonder what the Republicans in Nebraska think of his "growth"...

Just as I feared a year ago after his accident, he is more of a friend to al queda now than before when he was a reporter. I suggested then that the US was better off if he were killed and I was jumped on by people who 'prayed for his recovery' and 'felt for his family'. Boo hoo. Now that he's healed, he's an even bigger mouthpiece for the enemy msm. It is one thing to call for execution as a result of a trial for treason, but to say that Bush's defeat is a matter of "life and death" (Soros in 2004), that is dangerous and should be taken seriously.

I watched Aaron Russo's doc
March 12, 2007 - 15:15 ET by DyneI watched Aaron Russo's documents, America: Freedom to Fascism today and I was just blown away at how far our once great country has already degenerated into a socialist hell-hole. I felt it was neither left-wing nor right-wing, had a very honest and open message, and had the tone of, "This is what you need to hear." The biggest shocker to me is, if what President Bush said regarding our Constitution as being "just a goddamned piece of paper!" and his actions in setting up the path towards a North American Union behind Congress's (and our) backs are true, then he will have lost the little respect I had left for him. Most of it died during his sidestepping of the illegal alien and arrest of the border patrol agents issues. Regardless of that, I still feel he was still a better choice than John Kerry.
Going back to the big picture of the film, I felt this way even before today and watching the documentary only intensified my feelings: It's high time that We, the People, take back our country by holding all government and political leaders accountable for their crimes, reorganizing the government back into its proper place as our servant, eliminating the Federal Reserve, abiding by the Supreme Law of the Land- the Constitution- and taking back our sovereignty as a world power by kicking the illegal immigrants, terrorists, and United Nations out.
For those who have seen the movie or at least have feelings regarding these issues, please comment. Only if we're united can we take back our country and proudly salute our flag as our national anthem honors those who gave their lives to protect our freedom once our mission is accomplished.
I am not a Democrat. I am not a Republican. I am an American.

March 13, 2007 - 02:33 ET by sarcasmoI'm heartened, and a bit surprised, that such a Libertarian (and yes, with Aaron Russo I used the large "L" deliberately) film has gone over so well. When I was plugging the preview here, some folks seemed to really-hate the ideas behind the film. What I liked about the film is probably what the news media hated-most -- it tells the truth about the Federal Reserve and what's been done to America's money, despite the plain words of the Constitution and despite how-well America did in the world back when her money was actually honest.

March 12, 2007 - 18:12 ET by BDIn a Chicago Tribune article dated March 11, 2007 on the front page entitled
"Where the US military is the Family Business" subtitled "Young Samoans have few choices but to serve despite risks in Iraq" the author Kirsten Scharnberg largely disregards any notion that the young Samoans who sign on for the miltiary do so out of any form of patriotism.
As anyone who has had more than a few meals in a messhall can tell you, there are two demographics that are overrepresented in todays army and those are Samoans and military brats/children of veterans. Both enlist in like numbers in comparison to say - children of liberal politicians.
In neither case, Samoans/Brats have I noticed a lack of patriotism, so why would a journo decide to focus on a perceived lack of opportunity in one community, but not the other?

March 13, 2007 - 08:03 ET by sarcasmoNot just Fox at all, but the problem for me has been that Fox News went-along with the "dead-bimbos & push-RINOs!" agenda just like the rest of the "mainstream" media has, despite the fact that a variety of Republicans like Paul, Tancredo, et al are running & deserve at least slight TV-coverage. It didn't ever happen, even from "fair and balanced" Fox, and that to me suggests a concerted news media agenda focused on having a certain effect on -- instead of simply reporting-on -- Republican primaries.
Despite the obviousity of this problem, I sincerely doubt we'll ever see it explored on "Fox News Watch" or its CNN-equivalent...

Few political cartoons are regularly "funny"
March 12, 2007 - 20:08 ET by RJWhat daily political cartoons are regularly "funny"? Very few, I think. Their purpose is more to poke a stick at some political or media thing or person. In that way, Gaggle makes it's points, but it isn't any more or less funny than the usual stuff you find out there.
In fact, I find myself usually groaning and rarely smiling at my local newspaper's political cartoon. That would be because it's liberal...which is probaly your problem with Gaggle.
It follows that cartoons are personal, not general. For me, I make it a point to view Day-by-day and Mallard Fillmore every day.
Political cartoons are design
March 12, 2007 - 20:28 ET by MobiusStripPolitical cartoons are designed to raise questions from the cortoonists point of view, given the considered topical issue. A good cartoonist evokes thought, debate, and sometimes a historical footnote. Walt Kelly managed this with Pogo. PCs that make a one-sided enunciation of a political stance without equally offering some device of humor- cynicism, contraposition, sarcasm, absurdism, etc. cannot be simply funny- and you can't get to the Ahhh! moment. They spark no debate, imagination or alternate perspective. Nor do they every rise to the possibility of historical value. In short, if a political cartoon does not offer it's value in content, context and presentation- it's crap. Gaggle is crap.

March 12, 2007 - 21:05 ET by MobiusStripRJ- there are few good PCs out there now, and I agree with you on that. Oliphant is powerful; Mallard Fillmore I find lecturely, small-jokish and never sublime. Gaggle, frankly, is a third rate cartoon with horrible graphics, no punchline and featuring immediately small-minded issues. It just sucks. Of course, you know my stripes. But I have yet to have anyone here beyond you engage in conversation about this topic, and don't expect to. It's sad in that there are so many forums available now, and NB seems to have unilaterally capitulated to it's own safe voices. Including it's cartoons. Where is the tradition of debate?
Two things, Mobi
March 12, 2007 - 23:13 ET by RJMobi, two things:
1) Could you possibly find a less important subject to agonize over?
2) As I said, your extreme negative views on Gaggle probably come largely from the fact that you're a leftist and Gaggle presents scripts from the right side. My large local paper, the Hartford Courant has a PC guy, Bob Englehart who keeps winning awards. Personaly I think he sucks...big time. Get it?

March 13, 2007 - 12:23 ET by Dee Bunkthanks mandrake - that is so cool. I'm facinated by Pi. There is a great extremely low budget Sci -fi movie called Pi about how solving it could find the answer to life and a cool book called Life of Pi about believing in things bigger than yourself.
Science/Math can't answer everything but it's so fun when people try!

3 + 1/(2+5) does the trick, does it not?

Wait now - that's a legit approximation. You can't solve the pendulum problem analytically otherwise. But that aside ...
Not sure if you got my reference - and if so, my apologies for the following explanation - but particle physics guys take h-bar and c to be equal to "1" in their calculations and at the end, when they actually have to come up with real values for things like half lives or scattering cross sections, they put them back in.
It would be nice if you could do that with those annoying Pi's.

March 12, 2007 - 23:27 ET by NL207Yes, I recall what the particle guys do. I haven't studied that material in close to 30 years now. They aren't really approximating h-bar and c as one. They are using it a a place holder, a symbol replacement.
Recall also the sin approximation is a trap, since it is a valid approximation only for very small angles.

Well, I never said approximate - I said assume - it was kinda based on a joke someone made in a class I was in long ago about how it would be nice if we could just assume Pi=1. I'm being obscure (or obtuse).
Actually, the sin(theta) = theta approximation isn't that bad. I did a lab last semester where I had the students test the theoretical value of the period of a pendulum (based on above approximation) out to theta = 90 degrees and the predicted value wasn't really all that off from the actual value - maybe 10% at theta = 90 (1.6 rads).

March 13, 2007 - 00:01 ET by MikeBIf I am not mistaken, some state or city passed a law that Pi was equal to 3. Whoever did it, must have gone on to Congress to attempt to pass laws against the laws of supply and demand, etc.
Yup, I was mistaken. Just went over to Snopes. It was an April Fool's joke circulated on the internet that Alabama had decided to legislate the value of Pi to be 3.
Considering the stupidity of some folks, I wouldn't put it past them, though. If it ever is done, it will es because some kid didn't "get it" in math class, and it just ruined the kid's self-esteem.
