Soros-Linked LA Times Columnist Sniffs at Gitmo Security Concerns

Does Karen Greenberg believe the United States is involved in a war with Islamist terrorists? Judging by her column in today's Los Angeles Times, The military's Gitmo script, you really have to wonder. Greenberg is executive director of the Center on Law and Security at NYU law school. Her bio there [from whence her photo here comes] indicates that she is a former Vice-President of George Soros' Open Society Institute. Her colleague at the Center, NYU prof Stephen Holmes [pictured here], lists as one of his areas of specialization: "the disappointments of democratization after communism." Ah, remember the good old days under Uncle Joe?

In any case, Greenberg recently toured the detention facilities at Guantanamo, and several of her comments make clear her skepticism as to the seriousness of the terror threat. Examples:

Greenberg derides the suspicion in which visiting lawyers are held: "The handlers used the term 'habeas lawyers' as a seemingly derogatory catchall for those who are defending detainees before the military commissions and those who seek to challenge in U.S. courts the government's right to hold the detainees at all. In a PowerPoint presentation and subsequent remarks, it was clear that at Gitmo, detainees are believed to be using lawyers in accordance with directives in an Al Qaeda training manual that was discovered in Manchester, Britain, in 2000: 'Take advantage of visits with habeas lawyers to communicate and exchange information with those outside.'"

Has Greenberg forgotten that Lynne Stewart, lawyer to Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, convicted mastermind of the 1993 WTC bombing, was herself convicted of doing just that -- passing messages from Abdel-Rahman to his cohorts?

Greenberg complains that "we were forbidden to walk anywhere — even to the bathroom — by ourselves or to talk to anyone other than those we were introduced to." Sounds like SOP to me for high-security detention facilities.

Greenberg sniffs at the notion that there's any serious threat of retaliation to the guards. She writes: "The guards and others, even outside the prison camps, removed the Velcro-fastened names on their uniforms. They told us that they feared retaliation from a presumably all-seeing, all-reaching jihadi network. Reporters too could evidently land them in trouble with Al Qaeda. Thus, many refused to say their names, warning others to be careful not to mistakenly give them away in front of us."

How "all-seeing" would terrorists have to be to read her column? Does she doubt what terrorists would do if they got their hands on a guard -- or members of his family?

Greenberg resents that "hard facts are scarce," quoting Gitmo officials as saying "you'll notice that we speak vaguely. We can't be specific. You will notice that we talk in approximate terms and estimates only. Those are operational security measures."

Does she doubt that they are operational security measures?

In her eagerness to dismiss the danger of terrorism and criticize her government, Greenberg ignores the larger and more significant reality: that the Pentagon permits journalists of all stripes, including ones such as Greenberg with clearly hostile agendas, to visit and report on sensitive facility like Gitmo. Try that with the French government, not to mention with the terrorists themselves whose threats Greenberg takes so lightly.

Never heard of her before ...

Never heard of her before ... thank God. Somehow, she "looks the part".

I say duct tape the name "Greenberg" on her back and throw her in a cell with a few of our Muslim "pacifist" Gitmo guests and see how much of a non-threat they are.

Reflecting back to 2002

Reflecting back to 2002 - After this brief exposure - excerpts follow - in the media of how decent the facilities and treatment of detainees were, the media became much more focused on loose and untrue stories - such as the Koran desecration invention, in 2005, which caused such unfounded outrage and  subsequently resulted in violent outbreaks in many locations around the world. I fear that the news of the retraction of this story by the source itself, Newsweek, was never heard by most folks on the angry left. I continue to hear it brought up in conversation; with my quick explanation of, "Whoa here fella. Didn't you hear that it never happened," being received like a brick up the side of an unbelieving face.

Even so, following all of the public scrutiny of Gitmo, additional effort was given to make the facilities better yet.

From a Fox news article:

Democrats Dianne Feinstein of California and Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, and Republicans Ted Stevens of Alaska and Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas.

They came to get a firsthand look at the facilities and procedures used in handling the 158 prisoners being detained in 8-by-8 foot, open air cells.

Feinstein and the other senators told reporters after touring the camp that they agreed with the Bush administration's handling of the prisoners and saw nothing to suggest mistreatment.

Inouye, in fact, said they are being treated "in some ways better than we treat our people."

Feinstein said she once worked at a California prison and has visited many others around the world. To those abroad who have suggested the Guantanamo Bay prisoners have been treated improperly she said, "Take another look."

From ABC News:

Senator DIANNE FEINSTEIN (Democrat, California): These are people; if you release them, they're going to go out and kill again.

And from CNN:

SEN. DIANNE FEINSTEIN (D), CALIFORNIA: I just want to ask our friends who are so ready to be critical to take another look because I'll be very candid with you, I would much rather be here in an eight by eight with a breeze than locked down in Fulsome prison in California.

One more reflection:

Editor's [Newsweek] Note:  On Monday afternoon, May 16, [2005] Whitaker issued the following statement: Based on what we know now, we are retracting our original story that an internal military investigation had uncovered Qur'an abuse at Guantanamo Bay.

I hope Ms. Greenberg was good and intimidated while she was there.  Her agenda is all too clear - portray the USA as the villian.  Like she knows squat about running any prison, let alone Gitmo.

Great post Mark!

P.S. she does look the part..  so does the guy.

Thanks, rimsky. Professors didn't dress like Ms. Greenberg when I was in law school! At as for Prof. Holmes, he really does look like the romanticist lefty prof from Central Casting, doesn't he?

I thought he looked a lot like the homeless guy around the corner.  Funny how college professors and bums look so similar.

I should note that in no way am I criticizing homeless people and I'm sorry if they take offense to being compared to professors :-)

JDW,

Nice link, what gets me is that the only "reason" given to close GITMO by the whacky left is, it will "Improve our Image". Typical liberal thought process there, dismantle a counter terrorism tool like GITMO for an intangible like image. We are friggin doomed if these people gain more power!

Hi JDW...

Yeah I know about Moron Moran calling for this, I just put Vermont in because they have started their Impeach Bush stuff and it seemed like a good place to start too, since they seem to not like the fact that he is the first President to take on the enemy that want us all dead...that protects their lives as much as possible every single day... they can work their way on down to Va....hehehee

I think it's Va. anyway...

The Democrats want to alter t

The Democrats want to alter the fundamental law of this land in this way.  They want to bring these prisoners into the US so they can call upon the Supreme Court to assert Jurisdiction over them.  Never in the history of our country has the judiciary branch ever held authority over prisoners of war taken on the battlefield, much less illegal combatants like these.   POW's, geurillas and spies caught in time of war have always been an executive branch responsibility.

the sole rights these prisoners have are spelled out by the Geneva Convention governing the conduct of war.  Articles 3 & 4 are the relevant ones.  Article three defines who a civilian is and what their rights are in war.  Article four defines who is a POW and what their rights are.  We see that these combatants in Gitmo do not meet the tests of either article 3 or 4.   This is why they are illegal combatants.  They are spies, saboteurs and fifth columnists.  Historically, the captor of such persons found upon the battle field is free to dispose of them by means of their standard military execution method.   This has in the past included guillotine, garotte, single bullet to the back of the head, hanging and firing squad depending on the culture.  In WWII the United States executed 6 such persons [Nazi saboteurs caught in civilian clothes] by electric chair in the DC jail.

The Democrats want to politically empower these enemies through the federal Courts.

Lawyers sniffing at security procedures after the treason of Lynne Stewart should not be given a platform in a serious journalistic venue [Oops, I forgot this agitprop was in the Lost Angeles Times!]
