Vieira: 'Beginning of the End' for VP Cheney?

Meredith Vieira was in a light-hearted mood at the top of this morning's "Today," joshing with substitute co-host Ann Curry about the estrogen on the set and kiddingly offering to leave her husband for the winner of the Mega Millions lottery. But we shouldn't have let the idle chatter fool us. When it came to discussing the repercussions of the Libby conviction, Meredith's leopard-skin blouse should have been a clue -- because she pounced.

Discussing the trial with NBC host-turned-star-prosecution-witness Tim Russert [file photo], Meredith displayed and read this quotation from Republican strategist [and former Dole campaign manager] Scott Reed that appeared in a New York Times article this morning:

“The trial has been death by 1,000 cuts for Cheney. It’s hurt him inside the administration. It’s hurt him with the Congress, and it’s hurt his stature around the world because it has shown a lot of the inner workings of the White House. It peeled the bark right off the way they operate.”

Vieira then asked Russert: "Is this the beginning of the end, do you believe, for the Vice President?"

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Russert did nothing to deflect the notion: "The president is on record saying that if anyone leaked information like this, they would be dealt with. It appears that Mr. Cheney gave Mr. Libby the information. As Kelly [O'Donnell] reported, Mr. Armitage and Mr. Rove shared information with reporters. And so the president now has to come to grips with that, and recognize that having made a committment to deal with that, how will he do that?

Sounds like Russert calling for the head of the Vice-President. The Vice-President is of course a separately-elected constitutional officer. He does not serve at the pleasure of the president. Leaving that aside, and even by Tim's terms, neither Cheney nor Libby could have "leaked" Plame's identity since it was, thanks to Richard Armitage, already out there. But that didn't stop Russert, with a little helpful prodding from Vieira, from none-too-subtly suggesting that Cheney should go.

fossen -- I agree that he won't pardon Libby at present, especially as there will be an appeal. Though he may pardon him on Jan 20, 2009.

As to his Justice Department's treatment of Campean and Ramos. Truly disgusting. Any conservative goodwill he has, is slowly eroding away over this outrage.

The answer is socialism. But only if the question is:

If it's ok to pardon Libby in Jan 2009, then he might as well do it now.  Same thing goes for the Border Patrol agents.  Why let them languish in prison because of the fear of politics?  That's what we call bullsh-t where I come from.

Edit:

If Bush does anything less than pardon the border patrol guys, restores them to their positions WITH BACK PAY, publicly apologizes to the agents on behalf of their sorry organization which did not stand up for them doing their jobs, thanks them for zealously PROTECTING our borders, and publicly censures the judge who allowed the circus in his courtroom, I'll be forever disgusted with his patriotism.

Unlike some previous Presid

Unlike some previous Presidents, Dubya doesn't hand out pardons lightly. He's used his pardoning power very sparingly, especially compared to recent presidents and especially his predecessor.

The last batch of pardons I saw from December 2006 was very short and limited to people who had already served their sentences but had made stellar contributions to society after they had served their sentence and probation. I don't think there was a single person on the list who was actively serving a sentence or currently under indictment.

Now, I'm not saying I don't believe Campean and Ramos shouldn't be pardoned. I do. Just don't expect Bush to arbitrarily do it.

Additionally, there is another Border Patrol agent that is under the gun right now - I think the name is Hernandez. Another BP agent who appears to have just been doing his job as being prosecuted. Heard on KOGO yesterday that a San Diego area BP agent, a thirty year veteran, came to morning roll call and turned in his badge. Said if they aren't going to support us, then I'm outta here.

I'm tired of seeing good people being prosecuted for nothing but being good citizens.  It's time somebody did something about it.

Turn in All the Badges

Might sound over simplistic, but it sure would get this nations attention if each and every one of our border guards turned in their badges tomorrow, in protest of the way their two fellow guards were ramrodded.  I don't know their contract, but I'd bet there is no clause in it comparable to the air traffic controllers.

Can you imagine the caos on the borders for all the shipping traffic that could not make it thru?  The administration would be forced to do something immediately, more than threats, to correct the situation.  Even if they did threaten to not rehire all the border guards if they didn't return to work, what would they do if no one else applied for the positions.  As the old saying goes, "power is in the numbers."

HE should have been charged, body-cavity-searched, and convicted instead of Libby ... he gave this political circus the legs it never should have had.

msh, the jury trusted Russert because too many Americans still trust the TV talking heads. It's a holdover from the pre-cable days when the the Big 3 networks were trusted purveyors of the news. Not that they necessarily deserved that trust (witness Uncle Walter), but it's still a factor in American news viewing habits. Thus, people like Russert framed the Plame-Wilson/Libby debate, set forth their arguments on television, then were star witnesses during the trial. With that scenario, how was Libby ever supposed to get a fair trial?

msh, I don't know how the jury selection went. Each attorney has only so many peremptories and possibly there were so many possibilities to use them, Libby's counsel might have had to accept the lesser of many evils. However, the judge could have certainly excused the loudmouth juror for cause.

Judging by that one juror's comments since yesterday, it surely seems he had his own agenda - and I bet he exerted some influence in the jury room. Sounds like a reason for overturning the verdict on appeal.

The worst thing is that this appeal, etc. is going to drag on forever, allowing the democratics and media to use it as a cudgel right up to the 2008 election.

He brings nothing but snickers in my house when he puts on his "intrepid reporter" show and questions others, yet acts like a scared rabbit when questioned about his own lies. Fitzgerald is the Grand Inquisitor, to be likened to the hypocrites of Spain and the dark days of Salem. He represents America's version of the Gestapo and the KGB. All Americans should be protesting this miscarriage of justice, for their own protection.

I really like Cheney, and I think he's been a fantastic VP.  I also think he would be a fantastic President, but the guy's nearing the end of his physical rope.  That being said, I think the best thing that Cheney could do would be to resign and have Bush appoint Condi Rice as the new VP.  There's only about a year and a half left to go, and no major legislative changes are going to happen, so I think he should bow out gracefully and work on getting his health issues addressed.

The best part of it all would be VP Condi Rice.  Can you imagine how freaked the Democrats would get about that?  If they start attacking her they open the door to charges that it's they who have issues with blacks and women being at the big desk, not the Republicans, which'll defuse a lot of their election spin for 2008.  Even if Condi doesn't want to run for President, she can still make life miserable for the Dems throughout the election cycle.

I hate to see Cheney step down, but the opportunities presented by Rice as VP are too good to pass up.

I agree completely!  With the VP resigning - certainly can use his health issues as justification - and if Ms. Rice were put in place, it would be quite a circus to watch as the Dems try to continue their attacks.  This is definitely the time for him to take himself back to Wyoming and live out his remaining years in reasonably good health.  This job is literally killing him...and no job is worth that!

I love this BULLSEYE shot by

I love this BULLSEYE shot by Neal Boortz today:

"So Scooter Libby has been found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice.  According to federal sentencing guidelines, he can expect to do 1 to 3 years in the slammer for lying about something he had no reason to lie about.  And while Scooter Libby is in the can, Sandy Burglar, who essentially committed treason by stealing classified documents, roams free.  Nice to know the real criminals are going to jail. "

Meredith and Mr. Potato Head would love to see Cheney go down (because it would be a great boost for their goddess HiLIARy via further negative public perception of the Bush administration). Not only will the Dragon Lady do anything to be elected President in '08, the MSM will do all they can to put her (back) in the White House. It'll be interesting to see in January 2009 whether we'll be giving more credit to the media getting her elected or to the Dragon Lady herself with her incessant efforts of cheating, lying, shirking the law, and smearing of Republicans. (Must be nice for her that the MSM has absolutely no problem with her as a Senator spending 100% of her time in 2007 and 2008 scampaigning for President).

So right

So right. When a man who has committed no crime is threatened with jail time and has his life ruined, while another ( Berger), who committed a treasonous act, goes free, someting is dreadfully wrong in America. Dark days are ahead as we march toward a government dictatorship, supported by a government press. As a previous poster stated, he is afraid to tell the truth to a Grand Jury. That should send a chill down everyone's spine. Unfortunately, it won't. Americans are too busy wrapped up in their blankets, watching American Idol and the antics of Brittany Spears. Sad.

Why Is VP Cheney Always Portrayed As The Boogy Man?

It's incredibly funny how the MSM, left-wing nut job trolls like BillAdkins, and partisan politicians like Harry Land Swindle Reid portray VP Cheney as the boogy man.

It's interesting how one man seems to "instigate" all this ill will. I'm sure that liberals won't be content until the man is pushed out of office or compel him to have another heart attack.

I think the whole Libby thing should have been handled in-house. The independent prosecutor role has become too politicized with no supervision or oversight. Libby should have just been fired and the whole thing investigated within the administration. The whole case against Libby seemed flimsy and convoluted from the start. Hell, even the jurors were "confused" about what they were deliberating on.

We can all be sure that this will be one more piece of information that liberals and their propaganda machine press use against the administration for some more partisan sport. Too bad, though, the American public are getting sick of all of it. When dems start putting into action what they constantly say, then I'll take them seriously. Until then, the Libby verdict is more fuel on the fire.

The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer.  Air Force Motto

emjem says: When your brain's stuck on liberalism it self-destructs.

What I find ironic is that

What I find ironic is that despite all the cries and complaints about our country "being under a fascist cloud" (or whatever term they like to use) of leftists, they yet cheer an event that moves us far closer to fascism than anything Bush has done in his entire term. Just goes to show that facism is socalism's little brother.

Actually, fascism and socia

Actually, fascism and socialism are more like "mirror twins".

fascism and communism are opposites

Radical socialism is communism. Radical was always referred to as Red.

Fascism is its opposite ideology. Such as were Italy's and Germany's, Nazism. In Spain the fascists were Franco's Falangists. These were RIGHT-WING. They were not totalitarian, or a police state however. All Franco was guilty of was driving out the communists, or "Reds"--LEFT-WING. He never invaded another country.

Also, for an earnest and self-confessed Fascist, Franco wasn't an anti-Semite, as Hitler was. He helped over a quarter-million Jewish refugees escape France into his country. He himself was of Jewish stock. Franco-- equivalent to Frankel, or such a surname. ( I.e. Diary of Ann Frank.) His was a nationalist, Catholic fascism, opposed to godless atheistic Communism. He was a misunderstood Fascist because he accepted aid from the Nazi state, which also hated communists. May his soul forever rest in peace.

Apparently your logic is ba

Apparently your logic is based upon the idea that brothers who fight can't be family no matter what blood runs in their veins. I notice you don't bring up Mussolini very much. The first fascist who also helped refuge a whole lot of jews.

Mussolini's own words:"If the bourgeoisie think they will find lightning conductors in us
they are the more deceived; we must start work at once .... We want to
accustom the working class to real and effectual leadership
".

He was also a staunch union man:
"Therefore I desire that this assembly shall accept the revindication of national trades unionism"

His words on economy: "Fascism now and always believes in holiness and in heroism; that is to say in actions influenced by no economic motive"

What do historians say about him? "He was coming to the belief which was soon to dominate his life --
that the existing order must be overthrown by an elite of
revolutionaries acting in the name of the people
".This summary of Mussolini's developing beliefs in his 20s by Hibbert (1962, p. 17)

"It contained several demands that were decidedly radical: A
progressive tax on capital and a tax of eighty-five percent on war
profits, universal franchise for men and women, a national militia, a
minimum wage, nationalization of the munition industries, worker's
participation in the management of industrial enterprises, the
confiscation of all eccelesiastical property"
. This is Carsten's (1967, p. 50) summary of Mussolini's June, 1919, political program.
Gee, haven't all I heard lately from leftists is progressive taxation and an end to war profits? Unionization, minimum wage, feminism, etc etc Seems for a fascist he had some good ideas no? In fact, so far the only thing I've found that seperates many fasicsts from communists is nationalism. Wow, one difference. In short, tell me how different is Mussolini's own summation of fascism
much different from today's democratic party talking points? Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State

As for any attempts to deny that racism has any part of marxism, who can name who said this quote? "Let us consider the actual, worldly Jew -- not the Sabbath Jew, as
Bauer does, but the everyday Jew. Let us not look for the secret of the
Jew in his religion, but let us look for the secret of his religion in
the real Jew. What is the secular basis of Judaism? Practical need,
self-interest. What is the worldly religion of the Jew? Huckstering.
What is his worldly God? Money. Very well then! Emancipation from
huckstering and money, consequently from practical, real Jewry, would
be the self-emancipation of our time.... We recognize in Jewry,
therefore, a general present-time-oriented anti-social element, an
element which through historical development -- to which in this
harmful respect the Jews have zealously contributed -- has been brought
to its present high level, at which it must necessarily dissolve
itself. In the final analysis, the emancipation of the Jews is the
emancipation of mankind from Jewry".

For those who said Karl Marx, give yourself 10 history pts.

Oh, anyone know who first started using the swastika as a symbol for their movement? That's right, the Soviet socialists of the red army during and after WWII. (note, scroll down a little for the pic) I quote on the swastika: "Prewar socialists (including some American socialists) used it on the
grounds that it has two arms representing two entwined letters "S" (for
"Socialist")." Ludwig von Mises even wrote in 1944: "The Nazis have not only imitated the Bolshevist tactics of seizing
power. They have copied much more. They have imported from Russia the
one-party system and the privileged role of this party and its members
in public life; the paramount position of the secret police; the
organization of affiliated parties abroad which are employed in
fighting their domestic governments and in sabotage and espionage,
assisted by public funds and the protection of the diplomatic and
consular service; the administrative execution and imprisonment of
political adversaries; concentration camps; the punishment inflicted on
the families of exiles; the methods of propaganda. They have borrowed
from the Marxians even such absurdities as the mode of address, party
comrade (Parteigenosse), derived from the Marxian comrade (Genosse),
and the use of a military terminology for all items of civil and
economic life. The question is not in which respects both systems are
alike but in which they differ..." (btw, he also pointed out that Nazism was NOT christian) History is notoriously messy but just because 2 sides fight, doesn't mean they are opposite.

JC Watts would be an excellen

JC Watts would be an excellent candidate for president, but not by the means you've indicated.  No way should Cheney resign!  What, and give some sort of victory to the terrorists, I mean, the Democrats?

It's just like Xmas Russert

I wished with all my heart every single true conservative politician would boycott shows like Matthews and Russert, especially Russert.

He is despicable and a disgrace as far as I am concerned, he has shown his true colors for all to see with this whole Libby trial. His self-importance would really take a blow if all he could get on his show were the likes of Hagel, Specter and McCain types.

If any politicians are reading this I hope you think about it, we ought to call or email out Congressmen and Senators and make the request.

By the way I think Scott Reed was let go/fired by Dole (a little too late in the game if you ask me), along with another campaign strategist if memory serves me right...which it may not.

BT - this is one conservative

BT - this is one conservative who hasn't watched either Matthews or Russert in many many years...and before that, you could count the times on one hand - only if I knew Cheney would be on.  They both make me want to upchuck!!!  I wonder if Russert will ever be able to reconcile the fact that he couldn't "turn the table" while on the witness stand.  How dare someone question him!!!!!

Mr 5

5-deferment guy should have been put behind bars years ago, and not just for illegal conducting business with and selling to, during the late 1990's,...ah....what's that country's name that we keep hearing? Oh yeah: Iran. The big d took his 5 deferments and 'other priorities' and conducted mega-millions in business with Iran as head of halliburton.

Yet we looked the other way.

And more crazy things that crazy liberal press just seemed to forget about and the Dept of Justice wasn't very interested either.
