It's one story that would seem to be of interest to the New York Times political blog "The Caucus" -- the nutty rants of the left-wing Huffington Post community and others, after Tuesday's news that a suicide bomber had blown himself up outside a military base in Afghanistan where Vice President Dick Cheney was staying.
Many Huffpost commenters posted regrets that the bomber had not managed to assassinate Cheney (the offensive comments have since been removed from the site, but Michelle Malkin reprints some and has a link to the full slimy set).
It's not as if the Times has been slow to blame conservative blogs -- even commenters on conservative blogs, as was the case at the Huffington Post -- for such alleged sins as CIA stoogery, anti-Semitism, and attacking the morality of local Democratic politicians. But the Times has apparently yet to address the it's-too-bad-Cheney-didn't-get-killed story, either in its news pages or its political blog.
We wait to see whether "The Caucus" covers the wishful thinking about a Cheney assassination by the left-wing Internet community.
In the meantime, here's the top of a Tuesday afternoon posting from blogger Sarah Wheaton in which she claimed of a Hillary policy speech:
"In only 20 minutes or so, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton hit an impressive array of high notes. She was speaking, mainly, to convey her capacity for big, serious ideas contained in her new clean energy bill (more on that later)." Yeah!

February 28, 2007 - 15:17 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveO.K....say a person is arrested on drug charges, and while searching his house the authorities come across a community diary (blog, or whatever) with several entries saying things of the nature the 'Huff-tards' have been writing. This person just went from a minor drug charge to a very serious conspiracy charge to kill the vice-president.
The big deal is that these people may not actually act on their feelings, but say someone did take out an attack Cheney and killed him, these people would be over-joyed...I would be willing to bet there would then be posts singing things like "ding-dong, the witch is dead" and glorifying the act and the perpetrator.
It is sick and it is wrong...no matter what the political persuasion.

February 28, 2007 - 15:13 ET by DyneWho else was watching last Saturday's America's Most Wanted when John Walsh showed some of the death threats he'd received? He said that, even though they were fake, receiving one can be terrifying. People who make jokes about it really have no idea how seriously a recipient of a threat will take said threat and may certainly become more than willing to defend himself.
If I were to receive a death threat, I wouldn't hesitate to employ a means of self-defense either by martial arts or firearms. If someone jumps out of an alley, brandishing a knife, be it real or rubber, I'm not going to take the time to find out which is which. The sad thing is a lot of people have been shot by cops because they thought they'd be funny and pull a toy gun on 'em, and officers aren't trained to ask questions, they're trained to pull the trigger if a weapon is drawn on them.

February 28, 2007 - 15:18 ET by Tim the EnchanterHow about those on the left try a little respect and civil discourse? The people who hold these offices, like it or not, were elected according to the laws of this great nation. Think what you want about the individual (are any of us truly worthy of anything?), but respect the office they hold. Remember Polonius's advice: "Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice." Or my mother's sagacious advice: "If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything." (Of course, I just hypocritically disregarded this on another thread, but at leat it wasn't a death threat or wish!)

February 28, 2007 - 18:24 ET by NL207Hilarious! Positively hilarious!
Richard Armitage openly admits he's the Novak source in this scene. Robert Novak tacitly confirms it was Armitage after the admission, and babbling fools like this rattle on about some Cheney conspiracy to 'out' a CIA agent who (a) was no longer under cover and (b) whose identity had been compromised many years before by the Cuban Intelligence Service.
Worse yet, dishonest political witch hunters like Patrick Fitzgerald put someone like Scooter Libby on trial for a dubious process crime in connection with his incompetent investigation and then never prosecute the actual leaker after he is exposed. This is akin to prosecuting the Ryder Truck Rental company instead of Timothy McVeigh for the OKC bombing.
If it was such a crime, you would think the actual offender might be prosecuted, would you not? This is proof positive the actual prosecutorial motive is political.
