Bozell Column: What Bones of Jesus?

Photo of Brent Bozell.

The press releases of the Discovery Channel boast that its parent company, Discovery Communications, is the “number one nonfiction media company.” That identifier is now in shambles, and the paper it’s printed on fit only to be crumpled and thrown away. The folks at Discovery have rendered themselves carnival barkers peddling sensationalistic garbage, trashy money-making gimmicks dressed up as real journalism.

The Discovery Channel is hyping to the heavens its new documentary on “The Lost Tomb of Jesus.” James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” has joined filmmaker Simcha Jacobovici in publicizing claims that a 2,000-year-old tomb containing 10 boxes of bones belonged to the family of Jesus of Nazareth. It also echoes the dopey “DaVinci Code” novel by asserting that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, that the couple had a son. They claim the son was named Judah and that all three were buried together.

So much for the Resurrection. So much for the Bible. So much for the divinity of Christ. So much for Christianity. It’s all a fraud – if one is to believe the non-fiction of the Discovery Channel.

Other than a syrupy boost – an embarrassingly syrupy boost --  from an “exclusive” appearance on NBC’s “Today” show, the national media for once aren’t buying into this cheap publicity stunt and have found a load of skeptics to denounce the film, perhaps because the list of experts, both scientific and religious, is endless. Perhaps the most important debunker is the professor Amos Kloner, who oversaw the original archaeological dig of this tomb in 1980. "It makes a great story for a TV film," Kloner told the Jerusalem Post. "But it's completely impossible. It's nonsense."

Joe Zias, who was the curator for anthropology and archeology at the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem from 1972 to 1997 and personally numbered the ossuaries at the center of the film, was even harsher. "Simcha has no credibility whatsoever...He's pimping off the Bible...Projects like these make a mockery of the archeological profession."

Hebrew University archeologist and epigraphist Leah DiSegni said that the names found in the tomb, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were among the most common names of the day. It would be like finding a tomb with the name George on it in the future and asserting that it must have been the tomb of President George Bush, DiSegni told the Cybercast News Service. In addition, biblical scholar Stephen Pfann has questioned even the actual inscription on the tomb, claiming it’s “scratchy” and hard to read. For all we know, it’s Johnny, Mabel and Jerry.

How do the producers defend themselves against the avalanche of criticism? It’s so, so typical. On the “Today” show Jacobovici and Cameron the “Titanic” director finally were pressed to respond to critics like Zias. They quickly fell back on the laughable concept that they weren’t – surprise! – experts.  Both said they weren’t archaeologists. One insisted he was filmmaker, the other a journalist. Cameron found it “compelling” as a layman.

In other words, neither has credibility, and neither does the non-fiction Discovery Channel.

When it comes to ancient Christian sites, the Discovery Channel already had a huge credibility problem on its hands. Discovery aired a 2002 special on the alleged “Ossuary of James,” which was declared a forgery in 2003 by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Its promoter, Oded Golan, is currently on trial for forging part of the inscription. Jacobovici produced that badly flawed documentary, too.

The Discovery Channel, like most of the national TV elite, display a dramatic bias in target selection when it comes to religion. There are no controversies over the historical claims of Islam, Judaism, or any other religious faith. But Christianity is another story. It is routinely the subject of sensationalistic TV exposes, complete with breathless claims about how Jesus “might be” the son of a Roman soldier, or he might have survived the Crucifixion. And now he’s a dad, with kids.

What’s worse is that these shoddy alleged exposes always air in the most sacred Christian seasons, like Lent. Last year during Lent, on April 2, 2006, “Dateline NBC” offered part of its show to alleged Jesus-debunker Michael Baigent, even as reporter Sara James declared: “Baigent acknowledges there’s no proof of his theory, but points out that it was possible to survive crucifixion.”

If the Discovery Channel fails to cancel this slanderous ‘documentary,’ it will have to explain why it is intentionally misleading the public. This network should be embarrassed by this plunge into sensational speculation masquerading as ‘science.’ To slander Christianity at the start of the Lenten season is unconscionable. This isn’t news. It’s sensationalism on a stick. Or in this case, on a cross.

This is an example of James Cameron's ego gone wild...

Good one Mr. Bozell, "What bones of Jesus."

My favorite parts (I feel that the rest of the movie becomes rather tedious) of Alien(s) four (4) are as follows-

1. The pay- off scene with the stacks of pretty colored paper denominated issues (AKA [faith based currency copyright 2007 at my site] including the solid liquid transmogrification in a glass.
2. The one,two,three-on-one hoops game with Ripley model Mark 2

Tragedy

The real tragedy of all of this is that acceptance of Jesus Christ, for most people, will only occur at the end time; when it is to late.

The unfortunate part is they have no idea how easy God made all this. Most people's rejection of Christ is based upon their false impression that they have blown it long ago and there is no hope. They believe, as I once did, that Christianity is like a huge scale with all the sins you commit going on one side and all of your good works going on the other. At the end, they believe, if the scale is leaning slightly to the good side, they will go to be with God, if he exists, in a wonderful place, if it exists. If not they will go to hell, if it exists.

They are unaware that they only need to accept what Christ did for us on the cross and accept him as our Saviour and every sin we ever committed and every one that we are ever going to commit are forgiven by Christ's act of Grace. They may need another Christian to help them understand all of this since it always seems to good to be true.

There IS NO other way to be saved and enter the kingdom of heaven and that statement infuriates a lot of people. Let me say it again: Jesus Christ is THE ONLY way for salvation; THERE IS NO OTHER WAY. Sorry but it is true.

Well, somebody had to say it and believers have the obligation to do so.

Romans, Gnostics, Jesus Seminar, and now Cameron

Honestly, in light of the Jesus Seminar is this all that surprising? I mean those guys basically voided Jesus of any divinity years ago anyway. People have been trying to separate Jesus from His divinity since He rose from the grave. Actually, since Satan tempted Him in the desert.

Paul said it best when he said, "We preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles." (1 Cor 1:23)

And C.S. Lewis puts it nicely as well, “I am trying here to prevent
anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm
ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to
be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and
said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would
be either a lunatic — on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or
else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man
was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut
Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall
at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising
nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to
us. He did not intend to.”
(Mere Christianity)

I'm off my soapbox now. Sorry guys.

News, schmews. It doesn't

News, schmews. It doesn't matter if it's true or not; it makes a great story, as far as Hollywood is concerned. And I don't think there's anything coincidental about the timing (Lent). It always bugs Hollywood Liberals that Christians can believe things on faith, so they are constantly on the lookout for ways to impugn those beliefs. And of course, Christians in general, and Catholics in particular, are one of the very few groups in this politically correct country that can be insulted today with impunity.

PS: Good quotes, Eric!

Exactly! Hollywood simply do

Exactly! Hollywood simply don't care. Think about how gradually over the last 30 years the film industry has attempted to break-down any form of morality in America. Now that they have succeeded at that, might as well attack the "heart" of most peoples morality: Christianity! Really sad. Even though I am not an 'avid' religious follower, I do know that films disproportionately are anti-Christian.

Hollywood is Secularist/atheist

Having recently become quite the movie buff I started going back and watching allot of older movies and was pretty shocked.

Supposedly today 90% of people profess to have some faith or belief in God and maybe even Jesus. Yet you would never know it from watching a movie or most TV shows. People rarely even mention God or church unless it's a funeral or a wedding and then it's very short, and the "preaching" is out of focus.

People in movies and TV rarely talk about God, Church or even much spiritual things when they have problems or challenges in life. These challenges are always worked out in a secular way using secular, not even spriitual, means.

getting back to what I said above, if you watch a movie from the 50's or earlier most people talk about God, even Jesus, and go to church and have spiritual conversations.

Only Hitchcock and a few others seem obsesessed with portraying Christians and Church goers as hypocristes. Many films potray the religious in a positive way.

You can even look at how in the 50's and 60's almost every character in the Bible had a movie based on them or major events in the Bible. Today, despite the fact that most succesful movies have been remade there is no attempt to remake the 10 Commandments, with better effects, or any other movie (only cartoons).

That's it, man. Son of God or

That's it, man. Son of God or lunatic, a man "who says he is a poached egg." Clive Staples Lewis, we salute you.

Its time to take action!

Let us take notes from out "Peaceful" brothers in Islam........Christians to the streets for a riot!

Same old story. Make a comic-strip on Muhammad and people get killed. Make a book about Israel and get a letter from the ADL, the Wiesenthal Center, get labeled anti-semitic. Make a movie falsely portraying Jesus, make a MILLION $$$ and possibly get an award. Sad.

Gay Mullahs Have a Death Wish

The Gay Mullahs at NBC and Discovery have a death wish.  They foolishly believe they can discredit Christianity in order to feel better about themselves.

If they are successful, they will be married just before they are beheaded.

I'm confused about this gratuitous 'Gay' comment.

I'm confused about this gratuitous 'Gay' comment.

Was that just a throw away thing there pearl?

I re-read the article and Blog Post.  I didn't see any 'Gay' reference.

It's comments like this that display more than a bad tendency of some posters here to drag out their meaness about anything Gay and further drags the site down to a level I'd rather not be associated with.

If that wasn't clear enough, regardless of your personal opinions about 'Gay' wouldn't you be better off at a site that simply bashes Gays?  I'd feel the same way if it were any other group you had to sneak in a little snide remark about.  How about Micks?

I'm a Mick.  Irish as they come.  Let's bash them every chance we get.  Or Jews?  Or anyone else?

Could you refrain from this?

Thanks in advance.

Banned for pointing out media bias?

 I guess I should censor myself when pointing out media bias?  Some topics are off the table I guess.

Excuse me pearl. You made a silly off-topic reference to 'Gays'

Excuse me pearl.  You made a mean off-topic reference to 'Gays'.

It was made in a conflation with this article which has no such reference.  It denegrated people you do not personally know and their sexuality has nothing to do with the topic; their attempts to exploit the recent 'Jesus' was a 'man' type junky TV show (which I deplore except in a historical archeological interesting way about burials in the Holy Land - which they could have easily done rather than this crap); and your continued refusal to see my point, which I think is pretty clear shows me that you are either:

1.  Extraordinarily dense about this issue, or...

2.  Extraordinarily prejudiced.

This attempt by me was a 'gentle' effort to get you to stop behaving like this.

If you can't get that through your brain, then you will never understand that Media Bias per se is not combatted by showing yourself up as either of the above.

I'd appreciate it if you would refrain from making such prejudicial and negative and, frankly, offensive comments to the site; both for the casual reader of the site and for my personal sanity when I try to discuss an issue on the site.

Again,

Thanks for trying to hold back this crap.

pearl, I don't know about you.  But from this behavior I am learning.

Your behavior is exactly the type of behavior that a 'shill' trying to discredit this site by posing as a Conservative or by posing as a MSM bias exposer would bring here under the cloak of a poster that had credibility.

Doing this type of post denegrates the site.  For this reason, I am beginning to think you should try another site.

I am pointing out to you that your behavior is unacceptable to at least myself if not the rest of the visitors to this site.

Your attempt to keep changing the subject is an indication of such.

Stay On Topic

Pearl...

ACA is right. Stop picking fights. That's how trolls learn fast that they're not wanted. Stay on the topic. If there had been something about gays in the article, your mention would have been warranted.

Also, the group that bashes Christians the most are the Secularists. These Secularists are represented by the MSM, the ACLU, and even your local school district. We've become just a little too politically correct in life because of people's hyper-sensitivity to Christianity. It reminds me of how the Romans were EXTREMELY sensitive to the existence of Christianity because it threatened their mult-deism.

I feel that there is a segment of America that needs to make a political statement every chance it gets that any mention of Christianity should not be part of the government apparatus (be it the public square, the courtroom, etc.). Mentions of Judaism, even Islam at a democratic winter powwow completely okay.

I think that you're trying to start a fight here and we can all smell it.... Why not just make a comment on the article and stick to that...why start trouble that gets NB stuck in the abyss of other sites like Daily K and Huff n Puff? Do you really want that?

The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer.  Air Force Motto

emjem24, I think that is exactly what pearl wants, after this.

This exchange is exposing the Troll for what it is.  I have always been a bit skeptical of pearl, but this crap is beyond defense.

I'm sometimes taken aback by some of the poster comments regarding the cultural wars, but if you remember we had sort of a little 'battle' here about prosthelyzing on the site; and that seems to have cleaned itself up a lot.

But, I can't stand by and watch this stuff without addressing it.

Poor troll spotters

The topic is media bias (not trolls, shills, Daily Kos, etc.)

Who are these Secularists?  Which group? Keep digging.

I am not afraid to discuss this topic.

baby steps

Maybe the following will help pearl-

1. What do cheerful Islamic leaders- Gay Mullahs- have to do with this topic or thread? This is if nothing else not a phrase one would expect coming from someone who claims to be trying to do anything in a "gentle" manner.
2. What difference could your status "By the way, how do you know I'm not gay?" make?
3. 'I am "gently" trying to get you to ask yourself which group bashes Christians.' Somehow "Who are the Christian bashers?" seems more to the point. To avoid any of us from turning blue in the face due to oxygen deprivation due to holding our breath(s) waiting to hear your answer could you kindly tell us?

No coincidence.

It's no coincidence that this comes just before Easter. The atheistic left is obsessed with destroying Christianity.

I actually wittnessed to a fa

I actually wittnessed to a family member a couple weeks ago.  It was unplanned, and it was awkward, but I got the message across.  It was shocking to me just how ignorant this person was of Christ's work on the Cross and the fact that Christ is God, the Redeeming Member of The Trinity.  Also shocking is the ignorance of the fact that Jesus Christ was humanity and diety in one union.  Jesus wasn't just some nice guy with a story.  He was the sinless son of God, made into Man and sent to redeem us all from our hopless sinful nature.  NOTHING will EVER change this.

I ended this witnessing session by loaning out my copy of Mere Christianity.  The choice is their's now.  I'm praying for them.

Thanks to Brent for putting Discovery DOWN  for their dispicable behaviour.

Gotta love "Hollywood Science

Gotta love "Hollywood Science"!

If their story contains one or two facts, the whole thing must be true.

Why bother with Facts, Taz

Why bother with facts when you can say "IF THIS PROVES TO BE TRUE it could destroy Christianity!!!"

That's all that really matters to the secularist/athiest. If they have "proof" or even the hope of proof that Chrisitanity is a fraud then they can finally go about living in their sin without the guilt.

It starts with the premise that it's all a load of bunk and then all you have to do is find that "suggestion" that it may be untrue, not the real proof, and off you go into unblief.

I don't know how many people I have witnessed to over the years that think that "Science" and "History" have already "prooven" The Bible and Christianity are false.

Where do they learn this? why in the public schools of course.

When you try to tell them that history and science only strengthen the case for the validity of the Bible and Christianity, as does Archeology, they are totally befundled and can't handle the information.

So finding Jimmy Hoffa should

So finding Jimmy Hoffa should be a snap for these geniuses.

Brent

"There are no controversies over the historical claims of Islam, Judaism, or any other religious faith. But Christianity is another story." The reason the media doesn't do stories like this on any other religion is because the American public doesn't give a crap about any other religion. What percentage of the U.S. population is Christian? 90? Who would watch a "debunking" of Vishnu?

This is nothing new; from D

This is nothing new; from Day One, enemies of the faith have recognized that the Ressurection is the lynchpin of Christianity - largely because Paul was kind enough to point it out to them!

...if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.
[...] if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
(1 Corr.15:14,17)

People have long known that, if you could somehow prove that the Resurrection was a myth or otherwise didn't happen - which would essentially require "finding the body" - then Christianity would necessarily crumble to dust overnight.

One classic example from the 1930s concerns a British lawyer named Frank Morrison, who set out to "prove" the Resurrection a myth. However, even applying strict rules of evidence, he found himself convinced against his will of the fact of the Resurrection. Consequently, the first chapter of his book Who Moved the Stone? is entitled "The Book that Refused to be Written".

Jacobovici and Cameron are simply the latest in the long line of opponents of Christianity who have attempted to undermine the faith by disproving the Resurrection. They are the first, however, to claim to have "found the body".

The question which they need to answer is this: if there really was a body, then why didn't the Roman authorities parade it through the streets of Jerusalem right after Peter preached is Pentecost sermon? They could've killed Christianity in its cradle. The fact that they didn't is itself proof that there was no body...

~~~
Grammar Tip of the Day:
The phrase "I support the troops" should never be followed by the word "but".
The whole premise behind this
The whole premise behind this documentary is so ridiculous.  Let's just put ourselves in the shoes of Jesus’ disciples.  If we were intent on creating a religion where the most important aspect is the physical ascension of Christ as God....   WHY in the world would they then go bury his body in a labeled ossuary???  For one, they would have to air the body out for a year just to get it to decompose properly before packing it in the labeled box.  Can you imagine hiding a dead body for a year while both the Romans and the Pharisees were actively trying to kill you?
This is so illogical.  It would be like a drug dealer storing his marijuana in a box labeled "Marijuana from my dealer Bob", right next to the box labeled "Cocaine".
I must admit, I'm morbidly curious as to who would actually want to watch this special.  My guess is it will be atheists.
Quick, get me a statistician!  What's the percentage of atheists in America?  It must be a huge market since the MSM keeps catering to it.
This was my reply to Mr Boz
This was my reply to Mr Bozell's Entertainment column (The Celebrity Asylum) on MRC which is a must read as well, but I believe it has relevance here;
Kudos. Very well put. My wife and I decided some time ago to remove the
television from the focus of our family. At this time, the only TV we
have that is working is mounted on a wall in our bedroom. I find
nothing at all useful or profitable about what I see on most programs.
I get ALL of my news from the internet (WashTimes, MRC, NB,
worldnetdaily, CNS, etc.). I wish that I could get an objective view in
the mainstream, but I know that it may forever be its own autistic
entity. Nevertheless, you hit the nail square when you said that WE
(the People) drive the fascination, but as a caveat may I suggest that
there are signs of manipulation toward these morbid fascinations as
well?
My point? "Jesus in a tomb": another morbid fascination. Go to Discovery.com and give 'em a piece of your mind...they are apparently in desperate need of cerebral parts, because quite frankly, despite your philosophical leanings, this is obviously just another factless, baseless, fantastical smear-job.
