CNN Encourages Republicans to Mimic Liberal Schwarzenegger

For the third time since the 2006 midterm elections, CNN’s "Situation Room" has highlighted liberal Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as a role model for the national GOP. On the Monday edition of the cable program, reporter Jeff Greenfield discussed the California leader’s visit to Washington to give a speech and he also described Schwarzenegger’s "centrism." Additionally, Greenfield highlighted the former movie star's liberal initiatives:

Jeff Greenfield: " In 2005, frustrated by a Democratic legislature, Schwarzenegger went to war, promoting ballot measures to curb the power of unions, to cap the budget, to change redistricting. All of those measures went down to defeat."

Arnold Schwarzenegger: "I just made terrible mistakes."

Greenfield: "So, in a remarkable 180 degree turn, Schwarzenegger began cutting deals with the legislature on education spending, on expanding health care to all children, on dealing with the budget deficit and roads through bond measures, that’s borrowing. He’s joined Senator John McCain, embracing a massive effort to cut greenhouse gasses, something the conservative GOP base is not exactly crazy about. And he’s even defended the Republicans’ public enemy number one, Hillary Clinton, over her Iraq War vote."

Greenfield then featured a clip of Schwarzenegger, in full centrist mode, (as the media defines it) defending 2008 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. He did offer a slight criticism, noting that some Republicans think the former movie star’s "centrism" is an abandonment of core conservatism. However, Greenfield made up for this by suggesting that if the Constitution didn’t forbid it, Schwarzenegger could be a formidable presidential candidate:

Schwarzenegger: "Every human being makes mistakes and that’s why they understand when a politician says, ‘You know, I made mistake.’ It’s that simple. Now, with Hillary Clinton, I think that people should, when it comes to the war, should elevate this whole discussion and really not, you know, pick on, on things like that, but, really, try to get along in Washington."

Greenfield: "He finished his speech in Washington by reminding his audience of the smoking tent he erected in Sacramento outside his office where legislators could come to smoke a stogie and shmooze, in his words. And his advice to President Bush?."

Schwarzenegger: "Get yourself a smoking tent."

Greenfield: Now, there are Republicans who argue that Schwarzenegger’s centrism is really an abandonment of core conservative principles. But when you realize that he won a 17 point reelection in the nation’s biggest state, in a big Democrat year, you might understand why folks like John McCain, and Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney might think that their favorite part of the U.S. Constitution is the one that says no foreign born citizen can run for president. Wolf?"

This is not the first time that CNN has urged Republicans to embrace Schwarzanegger’s liberalism. On November 9, just days after the 2006 midterm elections, correspondent Bill Schneider suggested that the GOP should learn the lesson of California and move left:

Bill Schneider: "Will Republicans move further to the right? Not if they got the message of the election. Republicans lost because they abandoned the center. Independents voted Democratic by the biggest margin ever recorded. The election also provides an alternative model of a Republican who moved to the center and thrived."

Schwarzenegger: "We fight our causes but, in the end, we find common grounds. This is the California way. The voters have endorsed it. I embrace it."

Less than two weeks later, on November 20, Schneider was at it again. This time he called for the GOP to abandon the "lame duck" Bush and follow, you guessed it, Schwarzenegger’s brand of Republicanism:

Schneider: "Well, you know, unlike most Republicans, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger did very well this year and his success carries a message for his fellow Republicans. What do Republicans do now? To paraphrase some famous advice: ‘Go west old party,' and follow the example of one Republican who had a very good year. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an actor. In three years as governor, he has played three different roles. Call it the three faces of Arnold. He started out as a moderate in 2004, campaigning side-by-side with Democrats to rescue the state budget."

As long as Arnold Schwarzenegger embraces liberal positions, look for CNN to continue touting him as the model for GOP success.

A transcript of the February 26 segment, which aired at 4:30pm, follows:

CNN Graphic: "Arnold’s Message: Can’t They All Get Along?"

Wolf Blitzer: "His state is blue; his party pairs with red, but Arnold Schwarzenegger thinks in shades of purple and today the California governor pushed for more of the nation’s leaders to do the same thing. Our senior analyst, Jeff Greenfield is in New York. He’s standing by live to explain what’s going on. Hi, Jeff."

Jeff Greenfield: "Hi, Wolf. Well, Governor Schwarzenegger was in Washington today and he brought a message that demonstrates why he’s one of the most remarkable and successful figures around. The message of this highly successful politician? Stop playing politics. But it’s a message that resonates because the ‘Govenator’ has delivered on it, and followed it, once and again. Schwarzenegger’s message was a lament. A lament that Washington was in the grip of partisan gridlock."

Arnold Schwarzenegger: "For too long this town has been about divide and conquer. Find an issue that splits our country in half and then crack it just enough so you can come out ahead. It doesn’t look like anything has changed here in Washington. The same things are happening all over again."

Greenfield: "What makes the words resonate is that the Governor himself is something of a born-again centrist. In 2003, after winning a recall election, he sounded strong bipartisan themes."

Schwarzenegger: "I have appointed to my cabinet Republicans, Democrats and independents, because I want the people to know that my administration is not about politics, it is about saving California."

Greenfield: " In 2005, frustrated by a Democratic legislature, Schwarzenegger went to war, promoting ballot measures to curb the power of unions, to cap the budget, to change redistricting. All of those measures went down to defeat."

Schwarzenegger: "I just made terrible mistakes."

California is so screwed up t

California is so screwed up that it is hardly an indicator on the rest of the country. Arnold is no model republican

Arnold is no model republican

Arnold is no model republican

You got that right.  Even when he was running in the recall against an extremely unpopular governor, he was no Reagan.

As to Arnold's quote about him making terrible mistakes when he put forth ballot initiatives a year and a half ago, that is not the case.  The mistakes were made when the very electorate which voted him in during the recall abandoned him at the polls when he began doing the things that we put him into office to do.  I don't blame Schwarzenegger at all; he put forth initiatives that were much more conservative than liberal and the voters said "absolutely not".  It's not big surprise when he flip flops and then puts forth the liberal agenda that our legislature and much of the voters want.

I really don't know how much longer I can live in California.  Arnold is the only thing that is standing in the way of the socialist Hippie legislature really destroying California...and that's not very encouraging.

Dutch

So the problem is not that

So the problem is not that he's got ideas that could be construed as liberal, it's that the media reported them and without actually saying so encouraged Republicans to do the same?

Greenfield's idea is common. How to win if you are Republican?

Greenfield's idea is common.  How to win if you are Republican?

It's very easy.

Become a Democrat.

Or at least cave into the Democrat Party's platform and borrow their votes while playing at being a Republican.

Why have a party at all if you aren't in it to win?  Democrats aren't in it to 'compromise'.  Their idea of compromise is like the Terrorists.  "We are going to kill you," is their bargaining position.

Kinda makes compromise hard, huh?

Naw, I think I'll stay with the party that has principles.

Arnold can do whatever Maria tells him to do.

Arnold

Arnold rose to the top by using illegal drugs. Does anyone really expect him to stick to "principles"? Inside that rock-hard body dwells the amorphous soul of a politician.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

Dems Lost Principless After Truman and JFK

Exactly right, ACA.  You nailed it right on the head. CNN wants the Republican party to compromise its principles to better "fit in" with "the people." "Fit in" meaning do what they want and "the people" meaning the liberals and the far left loons out there. The minute the Republican party does that, I'll go independent.

We need to band together and take on these liberal, media hog, Shrillary/Osama worshiping, turkey trolls and stop worrying about nuance (are you listening John McCain). Our party needs to reflect the values of what this country was founded on and what most of this country believes in still.

There may be politicians like Ahnold out there who compromise their principles to get reelected but that doesn't mean he represents the party. If we want our country to remain sovereign and free then we need a counterweight to the lies and distortions the Dems feed this country (and its propagandist arm the MSM). If we don't, we will become more and more like Europe, who have banded together against the big, bad "Satan." Ooooh, still sucks when the EU still hasn't helped Germany's and France's economies out of the gutter. Do we want to be a country like Germany who takes a young girl away from her family for homeschooling her (homeschooling is illegal in Germany) or a country that lets parents/families decide what educational option is best for their children?

Ahnold Is A RINO

I love how CNN is now "telling" all us conservatives how to think and feel about the 2008 presidential election. Why can't CNN let us decide for ourselves? I think Ahnold is big, fat phony with RINO written all over him. Great actor, great talent but he had to CUT deals with the CA legislature to get anything accomplished. It was sad when he did that just to seem "centrist" to get reelected. People aren't stupid but I guess nuanced politics works with the CA crowd, doesn't it?

emjem...

Arnold was a RINO, now he's a Democrat. I know it's not official yet, but he might as well be.

The liberal MSM has become an enemy of the USA.

Compromising to a liberal mea

Compromising to a liberal means doing what they want to do. Look at No Child Left Behind. Bush joined Ted "the drunk, murderer" Kennedy in passing the legislation that was a socialists dream and no sooner than it was passed, "the swimmer" chastised Bush for NOT spending enough!!!! It's never enough to a lib.

Why would I want imitate so

Why would I want imitate someone who doesn't get it?

Funny thing is that I've neve

Funny thing is that I've never heard the MSLM ever state that a Democrat should compromise to Republicans when they were in the majority. Quite the opposite. The way the MSLM reported things, you would have sworn that the Dims were in power.

I was thinking the same thing. I am so glad that people didn't continue to try to change that just for him like they were talking back when he was first elected. I thought it was a bad idea then, I think it's a worse idea now.

His transformation into a complete RINO is puzzling. Is it because he's European? Is it because he married into the Kennedy family? Was it the steroid use over the past 3 decades?

Advice to Dems

If more Democrats emulated Ronald Reagan, the donkey party could once again be the dominant party they once were.  As it is, their Senate majority is very shaky.  And if the GOP gets back to its conservative strengths, the Dems' majority status could be short lived.

The robber barons are comin

The robber barons are coming for your money. This system is not getting better, it's getting worse. We're not stopping or reversing it, we're only slowing down it's growth.

I've had some pretty extreme views about what to do, but now I'm going to come out with the most extreme view I've ever had....

It's time we left the planet!

Ok, let me elaborate a little bit. I think that the only way we are going to escape this robbery is to escape the bounds of Earth. Conservatives are the backbone of the US economy, and I believe we need to realize that we cannot beat the Liberals at lying as for the most part, we just don't lie.

It's time to understand that there will be certain endeavors that can and will make us rich, and pull us away from our little leech brethren who wish to steal from us to fill their own pockets.

I also have little dreams of starting a conservative capitalistic near Earth Asteroid mining operation that would help to re-invigorate the US economy and save us from the coming recession that is inevitable with Democrats in charge.

I think it could be safely argued that industry which moves into space, or that spends the bulk of it's investment building a space industry infrastructure could be mostly tax exempt for a while... and the jobs that would be created to support such an industry would be located in the US. Tourism is not the answer to space... it's Platinum, Gold, Silver, Nickel, Iron and Aluminum that can be found in Near Earth Asteroids.

Yeah, maybe I'm dreaming... then again.... it's a dream to make money, get rich and stay away from Liberals. If we become strong enough up there... we can start to make the rules once again... but remember, Liberals buy votes by telling voters that they'll pay for everything.... e.g. National Health Care.... a debacle if I ever knew one... and it's coming. They will get it because of the mamby pamby Schwarzeneggers in the Republican party.

Who's with me? Let's start an exploratory company called Extraterrestrial Mining Corporation! I'll set up the website... we can set up a PayPal account and start getting people involved. I'm sure that there are enough of us that if we each donate some money, we can do it. I personally will have my Master’s in Computer Science in a year as well as my PMP (project management professional) certification. I'm also willing to donate money and time to get this effort off the ground. Other people are doing this as non-profit societies... I say we approach it as a business and handle it like a project. Have goals, and set out to meet them. Be ambitious and assertive. Believe that it is possible to begin mining an Asteroid within 10 years and push for that goal.

I've always been a great advocate of leaving the planet, myself.

I've always been a great advocate of leaving the planet, myself.

Not on a comet like some nuts; more like a raping and pillaging pirate.

I mean, if we really are destroying our planet, Earth, let's go whole hog.

Stop funding all these silly War on Poverty programs and use all the Oil, Trees and minerals we can; put the children in factories and mines (save on education; drop health care, except for me of course (that's what? 10% of our GNP being wasted); forget about the inner-cities - fence 'em off and pipe subsistence food into 'em; and spend all that ill-gotten wealth on space travel...

So's we'uns can find another planet to rape and pillage.

Aside from that simple plan, I'm in favor of asterioid mining, individual space ships (with FTL drives) and stuff like that.  Remember the 'Belters' is my motto.

I think that FTL is out of

I think that FTL is out of the question for the moment, but Asteroid mining is a real possibility... think of the billions to be made. I by no means have any desire to share these gains with whiny liberals.... we go up there... we can start the Empire and come back down here and rule the peons!!!

Native Americans didn't believe in secure borders. Look what happened to them.

Did anybody but Bill Schneide

Did anybody but Bill Schneider "get the message" from the last election that Republicans need to move to the center?  The message that I got was that a lot of Republicans were ticked that their candidates had abandoned their conservative principals and couldn't find it in themselves to vote for RINOs.  I know the MSM loves to paint the 2006 elections as a huge mandate for moving to the Left, but the "great victory" is truly a mile wide and an inch deep.  Yes, the Dems won a lot of elections, but the outcome of most of those elections would have been different if Republicans had been inticed to vote.  If the Republican party fields candidates that deserve to be called Republicans, the voters will come back out and the Democrats will be out.

Getting back to this topic, I was listening to Hannity yesterday, and he was talking to a woman who said she wouldn't vote for his boy Rudi because he's not pro-life.  He then asked her if she would vote for Rudi if it came down to a vote for Rudi or a vote for Hillary, who's pro-abortion, and the woman said no... she would stay home.  Hannity didn't see the logic in that, but he also wasn't seeing that Republicans are getting tired of RINO candidates.  I think the lesson that should be learned from the 2006 elections is not that we're going to be forced to choose the lesser of two evils, but that we're going to nominate a candidate who we can vote for.

One thing to remember about

One thing to remember about these people: they do not wish conservatives well. It would be best not to listen to their advice, except purely in an academic sense. They only have one fixed principal: the acquisition of more and more power for themselves. All other principals are up for grabs- they change them as frequently as most people change clothes. In the MSM's miserable little existance, they can't stand to see anyone that has principals and morals, so they wish to make all others just like themselves- shallow, unprincipled, and miserable. The main difference between conservatives and libs: with conservatives there are certain things that are not negotiable, with the left, anything is up for grabs to implement their one and only one reason for being.

The great G. K. Chesterton once said: "The reason to have an open mind is to close it upon something good and solid." Can't be said any better than that. He also had the lib mentality pegged when he said: "When a man ceases to believe in God, he dosen't believe in nothing. Rather, he'll believe in anything. Perfect.

"...The fact that some people are not deterred by capital punishment is the very reason that it should exist."
