If what Fox News reported Saturday is correct, conservatives all around the country might have been given a very early Christmas present by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
FNC’s Bill McCuddy announced the following from Hollywood during Saturday’s "Fox & Friends”:
The big story here out on the red carpet back to live action is that Mr., Mr. Al Gore who is going to walk this red carpet, still doesn’t have permission to go up to that podium if he in fact wins for “An Inconvenient Truth,” which sounds awfully inconvenient in and of itself. It’s something of a clerical error. This guy can not win or give an acceptance speech to save his life.
How delicious. McCuddy was asked to elaborate why that might be:
He’s not listed as a producer. Guggenheim, the guy he made the movie with is. But, he isn’t. And the Academy is locking down on that this year. They were tired of all those people going up and giving acceptance speeches. And now it’s kind of backfired. I have to believe that Gore is appealing that. But, unless he can get somebody from Florida and the attorney general to jump in, I’m afraid he’s not going to be up there.
In reality, Gore isn’t listed as a producer at the film’s website (emphasis mine):
Paramount Classics and Participant Productions present a film directed by Davis Guggenheim, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. Featuring Al Gore, the film is produced by Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and Scott Z. Burns. Jeff Skoll and Davis Guggenheim are the executive producers and the co-producer is Leslie Chilcott.
Talk about your inconvenient truths!
Of course, it seems quite likely the Academy is going to find a way to circumvent these new rules for Dr. Global Warming, dontcha think? After all, if it can ignore its own policies concerning documentaries to nominate Gore's nonsense as reported by NewsBusters here, it seems a metaphysical certitude that something as trivial as official credits aren't going to spoil this liberal lovefest.
In fact, it's seems possible that this whole rumor was designed to create a greater sense of intrigue around this event conceivably to boost ratings.
Stay tuned.

This is perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Is there enough time for a recount? On a weekend?
Now I shall have to watch, just to see Big Al squirm in his chair.
Thanks for the Saturday smile, NS.

My latest word is that it will be longer than ever. I never have watched these shows. Riddle me this? Who does watch these things?
The girls, I would guess.

February 24, 2007 - 13:27 ET by Dee BunkYes ACA - it's a girl thing. I've had a tradition of watching it with friends for many years and when I boycotted it they were upset. The people I watch with are liberal and I told them I would only watch again if they promised to make fun of the actors who made political speeches with me - and they agreed! So I had to.
Last year - they both turned against George Clooney after he rolled his eyes at the nice non famous women who thanked the academy for sitting him next to her at dinner (she wasn't cool enough and glamorous enough for him I guess). With that and his ridiculous speech about Hollywood being responsible for ending Racism etc.., they came into agreement with me that he is an idiot. So it was worth it.
This year maybe they will come to a realization about Al Gore.
If I had a Neilson box or a Tivo type device that could be tracked - I'd never watch it.

I don't agree that this is a gender issue. I know many male movie enthusiasts that watch the Oscars religiously because of their love of film. Before all the Bush Derangement Syndrome started, I was quite a devotee myself.
Sadly, in the past five years or so, it's become too insulting. ns

February 25, 2007 - 12:46 ET by dagdaI am a male cinaeste, but I never watch the Oscars. It is a popularity contest in which many of the voters have not seen the films or have their assistants, family or staff fill in their ballots for them.
The only "real" category is Best Foreign Film and even that is tainted because the countries decide which film represents them, not the Academy or film makers. Still, only those who have seen all the films in special screenings, can vote in the category.

And why wouldn't they bend
February 24, 2007 - 13:18 ET by motherbeltAnd why wouldn't they bend the rules to let him give a speech? They will already be bending the rules if his movie wins:
"As sickening as it might seem, Al Gore appears to be a lock to win an
Academy Award Sunday for his schlockumentary about global warming.
Unfortunately, the real inconvenient truth is that the film appears to violate the Academy’s own rules concerning documentaries." -Noel Sheppard's blog
As noted here the other day, his movie doesn't quite meet the criteria for a documentary, but that's not stopping them from nominating it in that category and probably selecting it as the winner, so why wouldn't he be allowed to give the speech?
