This is getting ridiculous. For the second time in roughly two weeks, a governor had harsh criticism for a state climatologist over differing views of man’s responsibility for global warming.
After Oregon’s state climatologist received the bad news in early February, Delaware’s governor had similar sentiments as reported by The Daily Times (emphasis mine throughout):
Gov. Ruth Ann Minner has directed Delaware's state climatologist to stop using his title in public statements on climate change, citing a clash of views on global warming and confusion over the position's ties to the administration.
Minner, who made the directive in a letter, described the move as a way to "clarify" the role of David R. Legates, a prominent skeptic of views that human activities are warming the planet and triggering climate shifts.
In this instance, the governor in question was concerned about the state climatologist’s work when he wasn’t representing her state. However, it suggests that Minner’s views have been impacted by all the recent focus on this issue by the media:
But Minner said that reports of Legates' work with private groups and privately backed publications disputing climate change had "generated some confusion."
"Your views on climate change, as I understand them, are not aligned with those of my administration," Minner wrote.
Hmmm. Now, Minner has been governor since 2001. I haven’t been able to identify how long Legates has held this title, but it doesn’t appear to have been given to him by her. As such, why her sudden change of heart?
Well, Legates is a well-known global warming skeptic that has had articles published concerning his views including this one that was in the conservative Washington Times on August 26, 2003:
While most of official Washington was captivated with the fight on the Senate floor to pass an energy bill before Congress left town for its August vacation, a vicious campaign was under way behind the scenes to smear two leading scientists for pointing out serious flaws in the science behind the theory of human-caused climate change.
Starting to get the picture? Think that this might be all about knocking off one of the primary global warming skeptics? Let’s look at this Daily Times article further:
Last year, however, Legates used the "State Climatologist" title when he co-wrote a friend-of-the-court legal brief opposing an attempt by Delaware and other states to force federal regulation of greenhouse gases.
The Competitive Enterprise Institute, linked by some environmental groups to an Exxon-Mobil-funded "misinformation" campaign, filed the brief. Exxon-Mobil has disputed the alleged connections as "deeply offensive and wrong," but one environmental group branded Legates as "a favorite scientist of the global warming denial machine."
Legates also served as an unpaid "adjunct scholar" with the National Center for Policy Analysis, and had a paper published by that group arguing that science "does not support" claims of drastic warming or human influence on weather or climate shifts. He has previously referred to global warming arguments as "climate alarmism."
This raises an important question: Is anybody safe during this witch hunt?

Drawing the line
February 23, 2007 - 15:55 ET by nkviking75I think it would be reasonable for the governor to say something like, "When you speak on global warming, make it clear in your comments that you are offering your own opinion and not speaking for the state government." But if he makes a speech, he's likely to be introduced as the state climatologist. If he writes an article, the editor is likely to insert a line or two identifying him by title. Is he going to be penalized for that? If the governor is trying to silence him, she should have the guts to fire him, or at least ask him to resign.
Re: Nkviking
February 23, 2007 - 16:17 ET by DobiusNk,
The supposition to your argument is that the governor (or previous governor) appointed this post or position. Then the governor has an obligation to ensure that the person in this post represents the state's position. However, in the case of the other state where this is happening, the position is NOT one appointed by the governor and the article above alludes to the same possibility here. That title is one sponsored by an academic institution and when that is the case, the rules change dramatically. What we do not know is what the relationship beween the state title and the state. If the title is one that goes with a university, now, there is a freedom of academia issue wherein the governor could distance herself from the remarks, but should have no real say in how that person does their job, as long as it is within the bounds of their office.

The uninhibited quashing of free speech, vigorous inquiry, and lively refutation is the real scary business here, far more so than the amount of heat cow flatulence is going to generate in the next hundred years.
It's time to start slapping down those who declare free speech on the matter "over" or "settled". We'll know when true consensus is reached, or at least a responsible majority. And that will have nothing to do with hysteria and volume!

February 23, 2007 - 17:41 ET by dscottNoel, are you keeping a tally on all the people who have been ostracized like William Gray, Fred Singer, Timothy Ball, scientists who debunked Mann hockey stick, etc... I think the list is starting to get lengthy on the GW skeptics. Concensus, my eye! How can you have a concensus with a growing list of objectors coming out of the closet????? The best part is every time the GW folks make a big deal out of someone's disagreement, it documents one more person against the so called consensus.

February 23, 2007 - 22:02 ET by danboNoel. It seems there are too many to get together an inclussive list of all of them. And many are just quiet. As a groups we've probably listed hundreds on this web site.
A few folks tried to set up a partial lis of skepticst at wiki. But there was so much interference I'm not sure if they did much with it.
Several of the skeptics seem very approachable if they have the time. You might want to contact them. (Present wiki listing)

February 24, 2007 - 11:24 ET by dscottThe 17,000 from the petition are interdisplinary, i.e. scientists from many fields other than Climatology. But as far as I am concerned, their objection counts as they as scientists have a basis to evaluate technical information, especially like Statistics or Astrophysics to give alternate theories to explain the same set of facts.

February 24, 2007 - 07:14 ET by acaiguanaNoel, I have a suggestion on the 'list' of scientists.
Could you guys figure out some way to slam a little perspective on this silliness about 'consensus' and the number 'thousands'?
For example, the number of total scientists State by State according to professional organizatons. And the same country by country. And the list of same (numbers) country by country attributed for 'major' breakthroughs? And the fields of endeavor for which said country's science community is recognized as producing 'leaders' in the fields of chemestry, mathematics, physics, (dare I say?) climatology, etc.
It would also be good to throw in a few numbers about 'system' theorists. However, I personally don't know of any 'system' theorists who belong to scientific groups or professional bodies.
Then you have a very large number of 'lay' people who actually are responsible for a number of theories (applied) and otherwise. Operations Research guys for example. But operations research guys aren't considered scientists.
Then we can get into...
My simple point would be that the numbers haven't ever been discussed and the number of 3,000, 2,000, 2,500, 2,4000, 1,200 of so-called global scientists is irrelevant to the discussion.
There might be one or two shining guys who are trotted out to promulgate this stuff, but I would doubt that a truly respected 'scientist' would ever chisel their opinions in stone over any of these issues.
Just my thinking.

February 24, 2007 - 11:45 ET by dscottAs others have noted and I personally experienced, Wiki will not allow a list of skeptics or alternative global climate change explanations to be entertained in a reasonable manner for people to make up their own minds. I propose we list by disiplinary catagory those scientists who have voiced their concerns and objections. A simple webpage listing the scientist's name, their disipline and weblinks to any articles they appear. If you have Lexus Nexus, you should easily be able to assemble at least 2 or 3 articles per scientist to plant on a page. I would assume you could find a number of scientists by doing a straight forward websearch by entering the words "global warming - objector, skeptic, hoax, etc." Of course many of us could from our experience submit a list of names they have run across as those who disagree with the IPCC. We just need a person who has the time to create a webpage and maintain it.
From that point we then continually pound the MSM with the growing list of scientists who do not agree with the consensus. And also make a big deal out of their ostracization as a political witch hunt.

February 23, 2007 - 20:21 ET by winston smithConsider this statement by the Daily Times:
"The Competitive Enterprise Institute, linked by some environmental groups to an Exxon-Mobil-funded "misinformation" campaign, filed the brief. Exxon-Mobil has disputed the alleged connections as "deeply offensive and wrong," but one environmental group branded Legates as "a favorite scientist of the global warming denial machine."
1.) Read it carefully. It proves absolutely nothing and serves no purpose other than to casually suggest that some unnamed environmental group (unnamed, how convenient!) believes Legates is somehow connected to a group or in the pay of a corporation that refuses to conform to the G.W. orthodoxy. The Daily times has no proof, anecdotal or otherwise that can link Legates to Exxon-Mobil. The important thing was to get Legates name in the same paragraph as Exxon-Mobil. Appearances are everything.
2.) I always laugh when G.W. skeptics are referred to as "deniers". As if Al Gore and the entire G.W. movement haven't deliberately denied for more than a decade the overwhelming data both current and prehistoric that easily debunks the theory of man-made Global Warming and climate change. The "hockey stick" deception and the outright negation of the "medieval warm period" are two striking examples of this steadfast denial by Global Warmists.

Boy, is my face red. And scientists are getting fired because their "view" doesn't correspond to whoever is in power. This is looking more and more like a twenty first century witch hunt. Sure you don't want to test his buoyancy in Crater Lake first, Governor Minner?
