Ace makes a good point about the common practice of media folk thinking that receiving hate mail from leftist nutjobs is the equivalent about receiving a fairness complaint from a regular conservative or libertarian:Liberal media outfits do loves them their unhinged-leftist hate-mail. Because they use it again and again as proof positive that they must be reporting straight down the middle to incur so much wrath from the left.
Although Allah points out the speciousness (and convenience) of that claim, let's also note that most of the liberal media's criticism on the right comes from mainstream Republicans representing the great mass of right-leaning thought, whereas those who think the WaPo is a part of the Vast Right Wing Noise Machine are unabashed, unhinged lefties, "undecided" voters only the sense they're undecided between Ralph Nader and Hugo Chavez.
Which means that the criticism of the paper comes from the hard left and center-right, which means, in turn, the paper is somewhere in between. And what is in between center-right and hard left? Ah yes: establishment liberal. Which is what everyone who's not batshit crazy understands the WaPo is, its support of the Iraq War notwithstanding, and its quite-praiseworthy attempts towards true political balance notwithstanding. Yes, the WaPo is less blatantly agenda-driven than the NYT, but it is still, on the whole, establishment liberal, and its reporting reflects that deep institutional bias.

But, this idea of the MSM, WaPo included, being 'neutral' and sound journalists flies in the face of reality.
Shrinking subscriptions.
Shrinking advertising revenues.
I agree the Post is more on mark than the NYT, but they are both Liberal rags.
And I'd like to see a list of the Republican 'George Soros' type funded webzines and sites that pay people to spam these papers with complaints.

How is this possible? When the Washington Post signed on to Arken's hateful online commentary about how this country doesn't owe the military anything, did they really think they weren't going to get wacked by people of all spectrums (oh, sorry, not you liberals)? I don't believe for a moment that the far-left is displeased by media reporting because they're both in each other's pockets. If the MSM really think they're not they're either dellusional or just self-delluded.

I say it was and is the "us " vs. "them" attitude of Clinton-Gore. I heard Gore in a black church during his campaign. He told them that the election was "good" vs. "evil". That immediately made my wife and me "evil". Hillary has already started the "vast right wing" talk again. But hate is a two-way street and sooner or later it had to turn on them. Now look at the mess they've gotten us into. As an old tv.show once put it," What a revoltin' development this is".
