Better get a trash receptacle handy just in case this turns your stomach: former Vice President Al Gore is rumored to be up for an honorary doctorate in climatology. As unbelievably reported by the Minnesota Daily (h/t Drudge):
Former Vice President Al Gore could pay a visit to the University [of Minnesota] in the near future to receive an honorary degree for his work in climatology.
University President Bob Bruininks spilled the beans at the February Board of Regents meeting, saying that "two of our colleges are working with Vice President Gore to provide, we hope, an honorary doctorate."
Amazing. This guy makes a science fiction schlockumentary creating unwarranted hysteria about an unproven theory, and an American university wants to give him a degree? You’ve got to be kidding?
Alas, it appears not:
Gore has been in the news lately for his 2006 documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," about global warming. University spokesperson Daniel Wolter said since Gore is an expert in the subject, several colleges at the University have expressed interest in inviting Gore to speak on campus.
"He's in the news and is a legitimate expert on a pressing issue of global concern, climate change, so this level of interest is understandable," Wolter said.
Just imagine, folks: in a period of a few months, this charlatan could win a Nobel Peace Prize, an Academy Award, and receive an honorary doctorate in climatology -- all for spreading fallacious and unproven theories around the world!
Can someone point me in the direction of the nearest water closet?

February 20, 2007 - 15:21 ET by SaseboSailorI have a question regarding this entire "global warming" dog and pony show. It's my understanding that AlGore and his cult are ginning everybody up over the possibility of a one-degree change in temperature over the course of 50 or 100 years. QUESTION:
Is there a margin of error built into this estimate? Could they be off by - say - two degrees??
In which case, we'd actually be facing "global cooling".
SS
February 20, 2007 - 15:37 ET by Noel SheppardSS,
Well, let's look at it this way. To begin with, the belief at this point is that the average temperature around the globe has increased by 0.6 degrees in the past 100 years.
Let's try to determine the differences in climate observation between then and now. For instance, how many weather reporting stations were there 100 years ago? Did they measure temperature in decimals or whole numbers? How often was temperature measured at each of these locations? Twice a day? Four times a day?
Today, most weather stations give information by satellite 24 hours a day, and do so in hundredths of a degree. If temperature 100 years ago was only measured in whole numbers, and only a few times a day, how accurate would the highs and lows be? Or, more to the point, how much more accurate might they be today?
NOAA reported earlier this year that 2006 was the warmest year on record in America. However, in 2007, they are adopting some new methodologies to their calculations. Using the new methodologies, 2006 was not as warm as 1998.
Furthermore, the last time methodologies were changed was in 1985. As such, the numbers in the past 21 years have been calculated differently than all the previous ones. And, most of the warmest years on record have occurred since the 1985 changes.
Connection?
In reality, as you state, since we are looking at only a 0.6 degree increase over 100 years, with huge changes in how data are observed and calculated, it is indeed quite conceivable that there has not been any warming at all outside the margin of error.
But, we don't want to talk about that as we convince the world of a scientific consensus regarding this issue!!! ns

February 20, 2007 - 16:30 ET by midnight cowboyThis is so unbelievable. We are debating .6 degree of temperature change when fairly accurate temperature readings have been around for about 100 years, while the planet has been around for 5 billion. How can any person in their right mind even consider exptrapolating 100 years of record keeping to explain 5 billion years of climate history to less than 1 degree. .6 degree can be a historically low increase for this cycle of heating. Previous warming cycles could have swung in much larger numbers. Maybe we are not releasing enough CO2 in the air to help stimulate the warming cycle. We just don't know and no way we can determine to that small of a percentage. We can't even count 110,000,000 votes cast every 4 years to the exact number but we can determine the exact temperature over a 5 billion year time frame.
Plant life needs CO2 and thus release oxygen in the air, where the frig are the environuts claiming Gore is starving the rain forests.

So, I'm announcing by popular demand - and the boyz weren't really that snokered when they voted; The Iguana 'Honorary Award and Advanced Degree Show'.

I'm hoping he does get all of these awards, because in 10-20 years, when none of his predictions come true there will be no way he would be able to refute the fact that he did not earn them and would have to shamefully acknowledge that he was wrong.
Of course, Gore isn't one to willingly admit his mistakes or apologize for misleading the people. But history will not lie and he will only continue to live with the shame that he was wrong with the added shame of being a reputed liar to boot.

February 20, 2007 - 16:14 ET by DyneThere's one major difference though. If I remember correctly, the Scarecrow states, "The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side," something that has been mathematically proven for hundreds of years and never disputed for as long as I've been alive. Al Gore's ideas are being refuted and debunked from all over the place and he has no facts to back them up.

Seriously, the entire granting of honorary degrees bugs me anyway. Takes away the honor that a real degree, earned with real brains and work, should bring. This particular one just illustrates how ridiculous such a thing is. OTOH, they can probably be sure he'll speak at their graduation, right?
Just like he's spending $500,000 to make sure he gets his Oscar. He'll do anything for honors, evidently.
Fiction
February 21, 2007 - 01:08 ET by JudithBut see, current life is mostly fiction in this country. Every day we find someone like algore doing nothing worth noting and getting major awards for it. We must wrest the chokehold the liberal MSM has on influencing what is happening. Many ideas expressed but nothing seems do dent them. Example: CBS, should have been closed down for election fraud.

Doctorate
February 21, 2007 - 09:16 ET by iveseenitallAll Honorary Doctorates are phony. Those of us who worked and paid for doctorates should recent this and deep down we do. But this is modern liberalism--- dumb everything down. From high school diplomas to doctorates, the libs have made so many degrees not worth the paper they're written on. Just another nail in the coffin of a once-great nation. Sad.

February 21, 2007 - 09:53 ET by Rupert CadellGood point. And if it was in the sciences or engineering, it was probably worth it. For us humanities folks, fellowships are crucial, because it's perhaps the worst financial investment one could make.
Right
February 21, 2007 - 10:33 ET by iveseenitallRight. And, while scholarship has its own rewards, I do resent liberals for not appreciationg people like you and for having made a truly educated person have to fight so hard for his/her financial rewards while dummies like Algore get undeserved praise and money. What a message for our children.

Iveseenitall, I appreciate
February 21, 2007 - 11:44 ET by Rupert CadellIveseenitall, I appreciate that. As far as I'm concerned, you don't have a doctorate unless you've taken qualifying exams, written and defended a dissertation (that step alone usually takes 5 years, Mr. Gore), and spent at least two years on coursework and research assistantships. And this criteria even excludes those overworked people who spent 7 years in a doctoral program but just never managed to finish their dissertation.
Ooooh, the failed presidential candidate made a documentary. Let's give him a degree!
Honorary my ass. And University of Minnesota is an otherwise fine school....

Election fraud: the news medi
February 21, 2007 - 11:09 ET by MikeBElection fraud: the news media called Florida for Gore an hour before the polls closed in the panhandle, which is in the Central time zone, whereas the rest of Florida is in the Eastern time zone. This little stunt is estimated to have cost Bush over 10000 votes in the panhandle, which would have made the entire recount debacle not happen.

Why not another honorary degree?
February 21, 2007 - 13:50 ET by ecscottWill the University of Minnesota also be granting Al Franken an honorary doctorate in medicine, for diagnosing Rush Limbaugh as a "Big Fat Idiot"?
