Keith Olbermann to Become ‘NBC Nightly News’ Contributor

If you had any doubts concerning the leftward political movement of NBC News, the new contract given to MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann should convince you that Bill O’Reilly is 100 percent right (h/t National Review’s Media Blog).

As reported by the Associated Press, along with a contract extension for “Countdown” through 2011, “Olbermann will also contribute occasional essays to ‘NBC Nightly News’ and there will be two prime-time ‘Countdown’ specials a year on NBC, a division of NBC Universal, said NBC News President Steve Capus.”

Hmmm. So, rather than add another conservative contributor to a staff heavily laden with liberals, NBC News has decided to give more airplay to one of the most partisan and vitriolic personalities on television today.

Of course, this shouldn’t surprise readers given the sentiments expressed by Capus in this article:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

“Bill O’Reilly’s criticism of NBC News as a liberal-leaning network is ‘really kind of sad and pathetic,’ the network’s news president said.”

This appears to be heating up the television news war even further: “David Tabacoff, executive producer of Fox News’ ‘The O’Reilly Factor,’ said Thursday in a statement, ‘It’s nice to see that Jeff Zucker let Steve off his leash for a few minutes, but what is it about being exposed as a liberal news organization that he finds sad and pathetic?’”

Actually, David, with this announcement of a greater involvement in NBC News by Olbermann, it seems quite clear that Capus is reveling in his news organization being exposed as liberal.

Regardless, as MSNBC is losing the cable news war to all of its competitors, including CNN Headline News, one has to wonder why NBC News is at all interested in moving personalities from a losing division to a winning one. That’s kind of like moving a pitcher from your losing AAA team onto your first-place team in the Majors.

Not exactly smart management theory, wouldn't you agree?

Liberalism

This isn't about ratings or money. It's about ideolgy. Olbermann is what he is. No burden of proof needed concerning NBC News and its liberal bias. What should be worrisome, however, is who is behind all this and what their agenda really is. 1984?

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

Silly NBC

They are very clearly trying to position themselves as the left-wing Fox without ever admitting they're doing exactly that.

Matt

Matt,

Do you think that's their intent for MSNBC, or NBC? And, are they giving Olbermann attention at NBC to increase his viewers at MSNBC, or are they trying to move the "Nightly News" left in order to expand its viewership?

Given how poorly the "CBS Evening News" has been doing with its obvious leftist bias, and the fact that the "NBC Nightly News" is in first, why would NBC News want to move to the left? ns

I'd say NBC Nightly is #1 bec

I'd say NBC Nightly is #1 because of inertia primarily. Plus a lot of older viewers simply don't know Katie Couric. And CBS is dreadfully boring, always has been.

NBC is hoping to give Olbermann a bump by putting him on Nightly. They're under a lot of pressure to revamp MSNBC since it's bombed pretty much since the get-go. I see this as a classic case of "synergy."

Didn't I just see that Charles Gibson actually beat Brian Williams in the Nielsens last week?

This is great news!

Left Ward Ho

There is no doubt that NBC "News" (My quotes and I hope you agree) has taken a hard left turn. It seems to be a deliberate business decision.

We are now treated to an NBC News foreigh policy statement that Iraq is in the midst of a "civil war". Tim Russert, who tried hard to mask his Democrat Party ties for years is now unleashed. David Gregory gives the President far less respect than Diane ("prom-girl") Sawyer showed Assad of Syria and Iranian leader Ahmadinejad.

Matt Lauer has continued on a downward slide, taking over leftist duties from the departed Democrat, Katie Couric. Ann Curry plays the sympathetic but empty headed leftist with alacrity.

At the farm team, MSNBC, Chris Matthews, the former aid to Tip O'Neill rivals Nancy Pelosi for partisanship. (At least that's Nancy's job). Chuck (once a Republican) Scarborough is undergoing a late in life conversion to the Democrat party. Norah O'Donnell seems to think the word "Republican" is a disorder. The star of this Newsbusters piece Keith ( "Heil") Olbermann, looks like a recent escapee from an asyslum. Cindy Sheehan and Code Pink almost seem cogent compared to him.

This coordinated behavoir can only be part of a deliberate pattern. Does anyone else agree?

They're just rearranging lefties on the port side of the Titanic. You can imagine the conversation in the NBC staffroom.

Twit1: "We're losing viewers faster than a West Wing re-run! What are we going to do?"
Twit2: "Everyone I know, and I do mean everyone, says that Keith Olbermann is the bomb!"
Twit1: "Brilliant! He's our guy! We're saved!"
Twits(2-8): "Hurrah!!"

They're just rearranging lefties on the port side of the Titanic.

Useless Trivia of the Day: Men had a much lower chance of getting into a lifeboat on the port (left) side of the Titanic than they did on the right side.

Second Officer Lightoller, the officer in charge of loading the left-side boats was much more strict as to who got in and who didn't than was First Officer Murdoch on the starboard side. Murdoch's rule was, "women and children first, then everyone else"; Lightoller's rule seemed to be, "women and children only."

Not sure if there's a metaphor there or not, but I'm reminded of an old joke about a NYT headline:

(It's easier than thinking)

Olbermann

Don't worry. NBC is trying the Rosie O'Donnell strategy, but it's only a matter of time. They want to bring in an "outrageous" commentator, but the logic will soon creep in. You only hire "outrageous" commentators for the short term, because to keep themselves "outrageous," they have to constantly push the line. Eventually, they'll cross the line once too often, and the network will have to fire them. On the other hand, if they don't provide regular outrage, they'll be just another boring talking head. The network will fire them anyway, because talking heads are a dime a dozen, and they could find someone cheaper. Either way, Olbermann won’t be around long. NBC is setting him up, and he’s just ego-driven enough to fall for it.

Outrage is a short-term solution. Does anyone seriously think Olbermann is hired for his political experience or his balanced, thoughtful insights? He's being hired to throw bombshells and to get canned quickly. If Olbermann doesn't realize that himself, his ego is interfering with his judgment (come to think of it, though, he does that all the time).

The movement is the result of immense liberal hatred

The movement from the tripleA to the pro team is the result of immense liberal hatred for Bush and all things republican. That way it makes sense. Get the most raging and horrendously insane liberal diatriber, and load it up on the biggest network you've got.

It's ok with them because they decided a lame duck prezz and the destroyed USA and taken away freedoms and the world hating us demands it.

Sounds like NBC is reacting to ABC's hiring of Glenn Beck to appear on "Good Morning America".

Trouble is, Keefy won't make anyone over the age of 45 chuckle, let alone tune to in to see him, and 20-somethings don't watch the nightly news.

Frankly, this is about rating

Frankly, this is about ratings, it is about money. Cable news exists not out to inform the public; it wants to draw in viewers and advertising dollars. O'Reilly is compelling television. So is Olberman. And NBC is thinking, from a business stand point, if KO can draw in the counter-audience to O'Reilly, it will have a winning-or at least good enough- ticket for its 8pm slot.

As for bringing him into the 'Nightly News' fold, it appears they are more or less testing the waters. Olberman probably has aspirations to anchor Nightly News someday, but NBC brass has their doubts and are giving him a small platform to see how audiences react.

I was sooooo hoping to be rid

I was sooooo hoping to be rid of this guy on the airwaves. I was hoping maybe he would go the Dan Rather route, and have to resign in disgrace and wind up on HDNet or something. 13 days we had left with this buffoon and then he is re-upped.
well, blocking msnbc now on my tv.

They had better place a HUGE time clock in front of KO, with great big numbers. If not, they may end up with the entire second half of the broadcast taken up with one of his 12 minute "Special Comment" segments. I have never seen a commentator so in love with the sound of his own voice, and so impressed by his own intellect.

According to recent Nielsen polls, NBC's "Nightly News" has slipped below ABC's "World News Tonight".

I, too, have stopped watching NBC for all the same reasons you have. Puting Olbermann on "the big show" merely lessens an already loosing concern for NBC.

The only situation that would make NBC even worse would be to elevate David Gregory to "the big show"...

What can one say about this m

What can one say about this move by NBC. As bad as Keith Olbermann is as a journalist, the business executives at NBC are even worse. If it wasn't for the socialized atmosphere of the network news market in this country, NBC would have been swallowed by someone competent long ago. That and, as another poster mentioned, inertia keeps people from changing the channel.

For a website that hates Keit

Well, blarson, you miss the point, that old IQ problem again.

Well, blarson, you miss the point, that old IQ problem again.

I forgive you, again.

The stories concerning Olbermann today are really driven by NBC and MSNBC.

Get it?

If you can't figure out that NBC and MSNBC are Left Wing nut cases falling off the cliff (sorta like lemmings, I suppose) It's fun to watch and its fun to see them putting their losing business meager assets into such an idiot.

I'm having a good time watching NBC and MSNBC disintegrate into a complete insane mess. However, I am drinking bottled water because I certainly don't want to get close to whatever is in their water.
