Newsweek's Meacham: Obama Will Make Voters Face Their Prejudices Against Democrats

Jon Meacham, Executive Editor of "Newsweek" joined the Obama bandwagon on Monday’s "Imus in the Morning" program. Mr Meacham declared that Senator Obama’s presidential candidacy was a good thing because it will make people face their prejudices, not only in terms of race, but against Democrats as well. Meacham further declared Senator Hillary Clinton to be old news. Later, in the segment, Meacham praised John Kerry, particularly his "finest moment" when he denounced the Vietnam war and claimed Senator Kerry’s statement asking "how do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake," is prescient now, and Mr. Meacham regrets that the Democrats are so rough on the Massachusetts Senator.

Mr. Meacham, appearing in the 6:00 hour of the Imus program discussed Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s presidential candidacy, and noted that he thought Obama had a shot at winning and that his candidacy would make voters face their own preconceptions:

Don Imus: "All of those people have no chance, or Villsack or these other people, they have no chance. He [Obama] does have a chance doesn’t he?"

Jon Meacham: "I think Obama has a good chance, and what’s good about it is it’s going to force everybody to examine their prejudices and their preexisting ideas not only about race, but about what Democrats are like. He’s, you know, an early and often critic of the war, and you watched Senator Clinton in New Hampshire doing a tap dance over the weekend about her vote, and I think there are a lot of people who just don’t want to hear about the nuances of why they voted for war at this point."

Mr. Imus responded by opining he thought Hillary Clinton was old news, an assessment with which Mr. Meacham agreed:

Don Imus: "She seems like old news, kind of, doesn’t she?"

Jon Meacham: "You know, that’s exactly what I think, and this is a personal opinion. But I think there’s some Clinton/Bush fatigue in the country. Since 1980, except for one year, there’s been a–no, actually no, a Bush or Clinton has been on the Democratic ticket or Republican ticket since ‘80 pretty much. And so it’s–I think people, you know people will take a look at her and God knows, everybody knows that things are serious and they want somebody who’s gonna be sensible and strong, but sensible and strong."

Following the discussion of the Democratic Presidential race, Mr. Imus mentioned Senator John Kerry, who was to appear later in the program. Jon Meacham lamented that Democrats had been rough on the Massachusetts’s Senator:

"Well, there is something liberating about that. What I–I always wanted to ask him and haven’t had a chance to, how does he feel about being the member of the party that the moment you almost become president, the Democrats immediately have you for lunch and never speak to you again? You know, it happened with Gore for a long time; it happened with Kerry. It’s very interesting to me, where as Republicans revere their elders, the Democrats just turn on them. And these guys, who’ve come really close, I mean, I’ve forgotten the number, you know, some votes, some pretty small number of votes in Ohio and Kerry would be, you know, in his third year-- starting his third year as president."

And Mr. Meacham recalled what he describes as John Kerry’s "finest public moment" and related it to Iraq:

"Well, I think it’s an interesting question for him, or it would be interesting if, because I think of it this way, possibly his finest public moment was when he was so young and that wonderful line about how do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake? And that’s been resonating with me as we watch things deteriorate. You know, shooting down these helicopters; Iran supplying the insurgents, and our apparent refusal to even talk to these guys which is what Baker and those guys wanted us to do."

What Mr. Meacham describes as Senator Kerry’s finest moment came in the same hearing where he disparaged his fellow Vietnam veterans, accusing them of war crimes:

"They told stories that at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam."

Yet Mr. Meacham neglected to remind viewers of this portion of Senator Kerry’s testimony. But then again, maybe some would raise questions as to just how fine a moment this was had Meacham mentioned the statement above.

If Osama isn't the next President the ONLY possible reason is that America is an evil racist country and should be turned over immediately to be run by the glorious, honest, perfect UN.

Hey, it's gotta be that! Don't you know the only reason David Dinkins didn't get reelected Mayor of NY, and Marion Barry got busted for snorting, was that they were victims of prejudice? Oh, wait! Barry actually got elected Mayor of DC again after his jail time. That sure throws a monkey wrench into the works, doesn't it?

It seems to me, by the way,

It seems to me, by the way, that Obama doesn't so much challenge "prejudices" of what Democrats are like as he validates the "prejudices" of what Democrats are like.

Predjudice against Democrat(ic)s??

How can the Democrat(ic)s claim prejudice when they just won the House and Senate?  You know, there comes a point where you stop pissing and moaning about how "unfair" things are and realize, the people of this country just elected you to do a job.....    No surprise though.  The Democrat(ic)s will find something to b*tch about no matter what happens.  I will admit, I have a predjudice against anyone running for COMMANDER IN CHIEF lacking proper experience.

Sure, I watch the MSM...     Through a pair of crosshairs.

Hey space

That's audacity.

In other words, loserboy admitted he isn't up to it, so he loses. That's the good news.

Oh, I'm sure a bunch of candy-coated sugar cane flowery words sputtered again and again to cover the enormous mountain of doo-doo just beneath is exactly what the liberal doctor do no ordered. Millions of adoring fans will flutter about below and worship the bronzed image. That's what they want, just tell them it's all flowers and butterflies, and then the tree huggers paradise emerges and they float along their merry way into never never land. Ignorance isn't bliss - the fantasy is.

See the harlot D Sawyers interview for the latest in fantasy play.

Meacham

Meacham is full of what makes the grass grow green.

His comments illustrate his elitist attitude toward mainstream America. He believes that we vote our prejudices rather than a candidates qualifications, of  which Obama has none.

By his logic, then, if we vote for a qualified candidate, we are bigots and racists.

As FastEd’s father says: “There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it”, which Meacham does beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Meacham's declaration regardi

Meacham's declaration regarding America's opportunity to shed racism by voting for Obama, is not unlike Ellen Goodman's obnoxious declaration last week that denying the man-made impact of Global Warming was on par with denying the Holocaust.

In both cases, the liberal advocates badger those who are undecided by warning that if they don't agree, they are evil.  Establishing facts and debating positions --- the hallmarks of American political freedom --- are cut-off, and Leftist symbolism takes offer.

Thus, it probably doesn't matter if the candidate is Obama, Harold Ford (Tennessee Congressman), or actor Denzel Washington, because the political visions and records of those people is far less important than the mere color of their skin.  IMHO, Meacham is a racist as the people he condemns, because he doesn't see individuals, but merely as symbols.

It was Martin Luther King who dreamed of a day when his children would be judged not by the color of thier skin, but of the content of their hearts.  Meacham apparently isn't interested in the content.

It will be a good thing for A

It will be a good thing for America to elect a black as President. It will be a cathartic event for the U.S., but it won't happen any time soon.
There still exist too many prejudices against blacks at this time.

Galavanic, you are right in your criticism of Meacham. His desire to see a black president amplifies prejudice of another sort-symbolism. To break out of that symbolistic prejudice, I believe the first black president will be a conservative. Then, perhaps, all prejudices can be set aside and that person will truly be judged be the content of their heart.

And I hope that day happens in my lifetime...

I sense the same feeling

It's the prejudices in many places we know are important; southern states above all. In the old south, many voters would just rather stay home on election evening than try to get to the polls before they close-- doing it for a cipher like Obama. For a person of greater stature maybe; but they'd see this guy as just another black Democrat.

Yes; when a black conservative of national stature arises; maybe the nation will move toward this radical change. There's an inertia still slowing down these major changes; and it isn't just racial discrimination. It's a political inertia. Change in politics is too critical for some voters. Why do you think some folks will vote Democrat under any and all circumstances?

I supposed that's why Dems ra

I supposed that's why Dems railed against Alan Keyes, JC Watts, Condi and others.  It wasn't because they were Republican, it was because they were black.  Lib Dems are just as racist as the KKK or any other special interest, pro-group rights organization that denies human individuality to rationalize their hatred of others not touting their myopic ideology.  This is why the lib dems want the Constitution to be interepreted as a "living document", to erase individual freedom (personal responsibility) and substitute it with group privilege based on guilt, hate and fear.

That's right, Meacham. Vote 'im in because he's black.  Like they did with David Dinkins in New York. What a great success story that was. Ignore all else; just peccadillos.  Black is beautiful.

I've seen more competent commentors on little traffic blogs.

Where do they get these people?

I swear the Democrats need to

I swear the Democrats need to come out of the 1960s. First they put a woman in as Speaker of The House, so we all can hear her rendition of "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar." Now they need to put a black man in the office of the Presidency, to sing his rendition of, "No Body Knows, The Troubles I've seen." I figure any day Oprah is going to chime in on Obama and Angelina Jolie will offer to have his 'love child.' Sorry, Dems, but very few Americans today seek to oppress women or blacks. And before anyone yells at me and calls me a racist, check the entire context of what I said here--I speak against the whining for women too, and I am a woman.

Nancy "as the first woman Speaker of the House" Pelosi's rendition of the Reddy song is more like "I Am Woman, Hear Me Whine".

I would love to start a counter showing how many times she says "as the first woman Speaker of the House"

If she wants to be treated as an equal with the men, she needs to stop shoving the fact that she's a woman in everybody's face at every opportunity.

Exactly, Motherbelt,

I have yet to hear a man say what number 'man speaker of the house,' he is.

Black President

Michael has revealed what happens when a cartoon character
from the 60's acts as an enabler, allowing his guests to show their colors,
prejudices and all. Cowboy hat atop what drugs have left of his brains and
sleeves flashing his own peculiar brand of leftism sprinkled with a
"Nuke'm" thrown in occasionally Don Imus got an executive editor of
Newsweek to show just how far left he is. I won't rehash that here, the blog
was excellent exposition. As to the question of race and election to the Presidency
I believe the Democrats are setting things up to prevent that from happening
for a long time. If you assume that the Dems will only nominate a liberal, it
stands to reason that a black candidate will have to overcome what prejudice
remains out there in addition to his liberalism. The latter has been enough to
shoot down all Dems since 1968 that have run as liberals except President
Carter. Also, any black democratic nominee would have to be especially liberal or else be
branded as a traitor or whatever fashion calls for that week. A republican
black candidate could be anywhere in their spectrum, but more likely will be
conservative fiscally and "compassionate" socially. Any placement
matters a not a wit. The Dems and their vassals the MSM will attack like
wolves. Editors such as Meacham will not keep personal beliefs out of the
media. The best example is the Steele campaign in Maryland last year.
Republicans can forget a man's skin color. Steele and Blackwell of Ohio did not
have to be black to earn a Republican's vote in those elections. That is
the Democrats failure. They could not and will not forget their skin color. They could not
forgive a black man's defection to the Republican Party and will always attack them with special madness. The MSM did act and will act as their facilitator. That is why the people
Maryland don't have a black US senator or Ohioans a black governor. It may
prevent a black Republican President. And that makes none.

"how do you ask a man to

"how do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake"?  And Lincoln could have kept some of his underperforming Generals and let the South succeed/cesseed and let England keep a slave colony?  I don't think Obama's "Lincoln as a anti-war liberal" holds up.

Hillary is really seeming old.  "We can do better" as her mantra so orated to be chorus line harkening image of Bill and Hillary once again together.  Does show a greater touch of honest sense of her own history, remarkably.  With her proclaimed skills and personal ambition (?) to be President it is a shame Bill didn't split their time equally.  If this were the year 2000 and Hillary was running she could play another character worthy of DESPARATE HOUSEWIFES and run as she is now but if elected she then could say to Bill > stay where you are and heck why don't you also keep the oval office > I like the kitchen and am happy to keep it for my office.   Gosh,  she could have run and maybe gotten elected and not made a single member of the Clinton administration change titles or offices.  It could have all been so neet and much more obvious a violation of intent of the 22 Amendment.  Bill why didn't you split your time equally.  Nothing against women being President, just forked tongued Lawyers claiming something is other than it is in the name of elective politics.  Billary, are you sure your Senatorial peers aren't just pulling your leg?

Yes, Hillary, you could do much better than you did.  Thanks for admitting it.

It is a sad state of affair

It is a sad state of affairs when you look at all the declared candidates and you wish you could vote for "none of the above" and get a second slate.

12 to 15 runners and we have to chose from the worst of the least.

I don't believe Darwin was that wrong!

Let see. If Colin Powell or C

Let see. If Colin Powell or Condi Rice were running, the libs would say skin color or gender does`nt matter. But if you don`t vote for Obama or Hillary, you`re either racist or sexist. Got it.

Just remember, the Democrats

Just remember, the Democrats ARE the party of victims...
