NBC's Matt Lauer opened this morning's Today show with news of the Dixie Chicks' big win at last night's Grammy Awards and used the moment to take a dig at the President's expense. After Lauer teased segments on snow in the Midwest and a skydiver who survived a fall, Lauer took his shot via the big news that an outspoken liberal musical group was awarded a prize from their liberal peers in the music industry:
Lauer: "And Chicks rule! They were shunned after criticizing the President but after a big night at the Grammys the Dixie Chicks are getting the last laugh today, Monday, February 12th, 2007."
Later in the show, in the 9am hour, Natalie Morales declared it was "a big evening for some ladies who've endured some tough times," and West Coast contributor Maria Menenous scored a backstage interview with the Chicks along with Rolling Stone's Joe Levy who asked if the win was a "vindication."
Natalie Morales: "The music industry honored its own at the Grammys last night and it was a big evening for some ladies who've endured some tough times, the Dixie Chicks. Here's our West Coast contributor Maria Menenous with all the big winners."
Maria Menounos: "From red carpet twists and turns to onstage wins it was ladies night at the Grammies. Almost four years after lead singer Natalie Maines criticized President Bush the Dixie Chicks staged a major comeback winning five awards."
Natalie Maines: "I told you I'd take you to the Grammys, stick with me!"
Menounos: "Rolling Stone magazine's Joe Levy and I spoke to the winners back stage."
Joe Levy: "Now is this kind of for you a vindication?"
Maines: "That makes me smile but it's not the way I look at it. I'm just happy."

Is it a night of grieving for them again, now that the "have been silenced" jig is up ? Maybe they all decided they couldn't possibly win, as the powerful Rove machine lives on,and they were prepared to look the 3 sisters grim, believing themselves that their music sucks.
Maybe they're all now 3 fat hogs, and needed to wear black to try to make themselves look thin ? Goes with low self esteem kookball lib, especially on awards night.

Does the Bush administration have anything to do with them winning or losing the awards?
Do these awards reflect the sentiments of the majority of country music fans in America?
I didn't think so.
So what?
If having their liberal friends in the music business shower them with Grammys makes the Dixie Chicks feel vindicated against the Bush administration, then they are complete idiots. The Grammys and the Bush Administration are mutually exclusive.
The thing the Dixie Chicks have yet to understand is that Natalies comments pissed off their fan base...not the Bush Administration (the Administration could not have cared less about what they said)...and that their subsequent drop in sales and concert attendance is because they lost their former fans.
Lauer is an idiot too.

3. Low enough standards to "make" the right connections.

February 13, 2007 - 09:19 ET by BruzillaWhat bugs me is that all of the focus for the woes of the Dixie Chicks is placed on their comments about Bush. Everyone, but the fans, have forgotten what really got them into trouble - Maine's comments about how she has all the money she'll ever need, and how since she's so rich she can speak her mind, and how country music fans are pretty much nothing but low-life, in-bred, hicks. Her fellow band members did nothing to object to her comments, which showed they felt the same way... a typical "it's them, not us, that's the problem" attitude. Maines said she was through with country music and her buddies went right along with her.
Then when their accountants call up and say "about all that money you had... you spent it all and no one's buying your records, so you better get out there and make some more sales", they suddenly redicover their love for country music and its fans, and expect everyone to forget what was said. Then when that doesn't happen, they whore up to the anti-war crowd and blame all their woes on Republicans.
All I can say is since their album peaked at 36 and went downhill from there, I hope the Chicks enjoy their brief moment in the spotlight. I also hope the spotlight isn't still on them when they take their Gramy's to the pawn shop to get some extra cash.

February 13, 2007 - 14:41 ET by BruzillaFrom her interview in Entertainment Weekly May 2003:
"For me as a person, [The Incident has] completely altered the course I was on. For me to be in country music to begin with was not who I was. I liked Martie and Emily's playing, but I did not grow up liking country music. And I guess I was ignorant to the fact that the stereotypes behind country music were true — and it was disappointing. And so at this stage, I can never... I would be cheating myself and not setting a good example for my children to go back to something that I don't wholeheartedly believe in. So I'm pretty much done. They've shown their true colors. I like lots of country music, but as far as the industry and everything that happened... I couldn't want to be farther away from that. And it's easier when you're financially set, because you can be a little more ballsy, and just do what you want to do. I don't want people to think that me not wanting to be a part of country music is any sort of revenge. It is not. It is totally me being who I am, and not wanting to compromise myself and hate my life."
Yep... she was "who I am" right up until her banker called, then she was running back to try to tell Country fans that she loves the genre again. I guess she thinks we're as stupid as she is. I wish her luck in pawning her awards to keep her lights on.

February 13, 2007 - 02:15 ET by Nach Dem FleischSo The Ditzy Twits got themselves some Grammys. Like they think that means something in the real world. Big deal.
Jethro Tull (Crest OF A Knave) beat Metallica (...And Justice For All) for Best Metal Album in 1989. I rest my case.
And I forgot all about Milli Vanilli. Heeheehee.

February 12, 2007 - 19:54 ET by BigBWell, as far as the Grammy's goes...just 2 words.... Milli Vanilli...
Now they just add to their relevance.....This has all of the 'imagine that' value as wondering what smells after my cat craps in the box....
They might as well start giving Grammys to the 'Best in Show' at the Westminster Dog Show....makes about as much sense.....Giving them the award for a category that they PROUDLY took a crap on...
You go Grammys....good Lord....
Now, this might sting just a little bit.....

February 12, 2007 - 20:18 ET by Johnnyboy792Vindication ? The only real vindication will be if they start filling the seats at their concerts again. And let's not forget Matty Boy, President Bush never did a thing to them. It was only the public who spoke to them and will continue to do so.

I challenge these so-called "peace-activists" to organize JUST ONE MAJOR D.C. PROTEST AGAINST AL QUEDA by the end of 2007...

February 12, 2007 - 21:45 ET by richflanjOh, yeah, they sure showed us. Liberal leftist "artists" giving other liberal leftist "artists" awards. Ouch. Meanwhile, in the real world, the record sales are terrible, concert dates are cancelled.......

I must admit the Dixie Chumps
February 12, 2007 - 22:01 ET by Dan The Man 2I must admit the Dixie Chumps sure paid a load of cash for the privilige of spiting in the Presidents face. And the funny thing is he probably did not care or think about what they did. Yep might as well as burned 30 million or so.

Every Night
February 12, 2007 - 22:27 ET by ecnirPEvery night, the Dixie Chicks get to go to bed knowing deep in their souls that they won their Grammy awards not for their singing but for their politics. What an empty win that ultimately has to be for these people who fancy themselves artists first.
Bush will still be president until Jan 2009
February 12, 2007 - 22:28 ET by Free StinkerDixie Chicks win lame award. In other news, Bush will still be president until Jan 2009, no matter what the entertainment industry thinks.

February 13, 2007 - 03:26 ET by terrigYeah, the twits have been through sooooo much. They're not the only ones who had death threats (though I have my doubts they really did). Michelle Malkin and Bill O'Reillly get them all the time from our friends the libs but I'm sure none of the resident libs see a thing wrong with that. What a bunch of spoiled little snits.

February 13, 2007 - 12:09 ET by Jack BauerHah Hah!!
That would be Nelson Munz's catch-phrase.
Nelson being the school bully who beats up all the other kids; lives off trash can scraps in a dump of a house; which he shares with his mom who brings home a new "dad" every night!

We don't play the DxCx here
February 13, 2007 - 07:09 ET by Guy Arthur ThomasThe Dixie Chicks don't play here or on any country station I listen to. I have a friend who is a local morning talking show host and he said even the pop stations don't want them. Consider this their swan song. They are gone. Country stations now even more unlikely to play Chicks.
If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal. Go Rudy!

February 13, 2007 - 09:20 ET by Hero SquadKeeping all of this in perspective. Weird Al Yankovic is a 9-time Grammy nominee, and a 3-time winner.
And this whole Dixie Chicks getting the last laugh against Bush... exactly what was the worst thing Bush ever said about the Dixie Chicks? As far as I've seen, he has stayed well above the so-called fray.

February 13, 2007 - 11:27 ET by cunservatyveOne small problem. The country music establishment still hates their guts. I was born and raised in the South, and there's nothing "dixie" about The Dixie Chicks. They should call themselves The Anti-Dixie Chicks.
