Ex-WashPost Editor's Young Son Says He'd Toss F-Word At Bush After 9/11 Talk With Dad

Photo of Tim Graham.

While the blog world churns over washingtonpost.com blogger William Arkin, the "On Balance" blog at the same website has a guest column today from Steve Fox, a former national political editor at the Post website about sharing 9/11 facts with his 8-year-old son. "On Balance" isn't about media bias -- it's about balancing work and family -- but Fox certainly demonstrated his political take, since his son was soon suggesting he would throw the F-bomb at President Bush:

My eight-year-old son recently came home with a book titled: September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed America.

My first reaction: What's THAT book doing in an elementary school? Then I remembered that whole censorship thing. As a journalist, I'm supposed to be against that. As a parent, I want all 9/11 books moved to the middle school library.

I asked my son why he had picked out the book.

He said: "I wanted to read about it because you never talk about it and I wanted to see if you've lied about it."

Lie is a big word with eight-year-olds, especially ones with Sean's black-and-white view of the universe.

I told him that yes, Mom and Dad had avoided talking to him about it because it dredges up old emotions (the sex talk will be easy). I told him I agree with the headline of the book. The world has changed. And now I was facing what I had hoped to avoid: How do I tell my kid about the world before and the new world he's growing up in now?

He listened. Eight-year-olds rarely do that. He locked in on the book's facts, which said that 5,000 were killed in the attacks. I told him it was closer to 3,000. The numbers seemed to overwhelm him. The book had many chilling photos from that day.

He asked what "hijackers" meant. He asked how the planes could have been taken over by strangers. We talked about the Pennsylvania crash and "heroes." I told him about how I had seen smoke coming from the Pentagon....

He asked about Palestinians and Israelis. He asked, "How come everyone hates us?"

I told him that we didn't know how many people hated us before that day. That it's gotten worse since September 11. That we lost a chance to make it better.

He said he hated President Bush. "He doesn't care about the people of this country and he doesn't want to hear what people have to say. I even tried to help him when I sent him an e-mail and he didn't respond back to me," said my son.

"I would use the f-word if I saw him," Sean said. I had spoken to him about not using that word before; this time I just let it go.

I realize now that I can't shield him from the truth anymore. He's in third grade. He knows about 9/11 now. But he still believes in Santa Claus.

The credit line read:

Steve Fox worked as an editor at washingtonpost.com for 10 years. He was the national/political editor on 9/11 and during its aftermath. He lives in Gaithersburg, Md., with his family.

Fox now works at the website NewAssignment.net, founded by liberal New York University journalism professor Jay Rosen.

This little boy's anger most likely stems from his father talking bad about President Bush, not the book. And I cannot help but think that the father's reason for not wanting grade school children to know about 9/11 is because they may actually put the blame for that day where it belongs, on the Muslim terrorists--and that, I am thinking would go against the father's agenda to 'hug your neighborhood Muslim.'

He wanted to shield his 8-yea

He wanted to shield his 8-year-old from reality?

I am currently teaching my 3 (almost 4-year-old) about the evil in the world so she will understand why we must fight wars. I am also teaching her why the United States of America, while far from perfect, is still "the last great hope on earth."

It sounds like he is allowing his child to be indoctrinated by the public school system (as well as his Liberal example). I think it is pretty rare that an 8-year-old child would come to the decision on his own that "he hated President Bush."

"I told him that we didn't know how many people hated us before that day. That it's gotten worse since September 11. That we lost a chance to make it better."

For those that "didn't know how many people hated us before that day" either you're stupid or wilfully blind. We've known for decades the majority of the middle-east has not been the best of company toward us. We've known the Europeans think they have been looking down their noses at the U.S. when in reality they have been looking at the U.S. they have been with envy and contempt. We've known for decades the China and Russia will always try to keep us in check.

And this guy is a reporter? He should know more about world events than the average citizen.

As for the idea that "we lost a chance to make it better"...I have got to ask, what would he have suggested for us to do to "make it better"? Convert to Islam? Sit there and wait for the next attack? Absolutely ridiculous!

Why someone would wish to mov

Why someone would wish to move a book regarding the nations defense to middle school is beyond me.  By the time I was in fourth grade I had read every single military related book in my school and was regularly assisting my older siblings with their homework.

In this gentlemens warped opinion, I would likely be considered pathological...

Regarding the statement that more people around the world hate us now than before 9/11, he obviously did not travel much in the 1990's.  WHile the arab world might hate us now, back then they hated us but did not RESPECT us.    THere is a difference.

Perhaps his son could be saved by four years in the infantry, eh Bass?

A talk to a young son (a comparison)

Compare that with a talk I had with my son when he was only 4 or 5 (he's 10 now) before 9/11.  It goes something like this...

"Dad, what's that?" as we walked from the parked car into the Mall of the Americas in Miami, Florida.  I replied, "Son, that's the American flag." I stood there and I thought to myself I should explain it a little more than just that after all he had seen it many times before that moment being that I was in the military.  So I stooped down and said, "Son, many people have died defending that flag. I defend that flag and would die protecting that flag and what it stands for.  That flag tells people about this country.  There are a lot of people who hate this country and would like to destroy that flag."  I went into a few more things about it that time and distance have faded from my mind.  But as I was kneeling down there looking at my son, wondering what he was thinking about, he just looked at me and the flag and confidently said, "Don't worry daddy. No one will get our flag."

If a 4 year old (at the time) can get it, why can't this grown man?

My 3-year-old (4 next week) r

My 3-year-old (4 next week) reminds me to fly the flag when I forget. WHen she sees one she points to it and says either "that means freedom" or "that is America"...brings tears to my eyes every time.

That's great Mean Green.  I'm going to install a flag pole in front of our house hopefully this spring.  That flag will be flying all the time - along with the POW/MIA flag.

One of my other sons (a 6 yr old) loves the Army so much that he has a poster of General Yarborough (instrumental in the creation of 4 SF groups and designer of the Army jumpwings), a poster of some special operators on a AH-6 Little Bird and a poster of the 5th Group logo and patch with a question of "Why We Fight" and it has the picture of the WTC inside a scope.

He said: "I wanted to read about it because you never talk about it and I wanted to see if you've lied about it."

Lets see here...what is the problem with this....

How can anyone believe one single word from this creature Fox when the sentence above is an outright lie in itself.

If he (Fox) never talked about it...how can he (Sean) prove a lie?

Manipulation

Let’s see, we have an eight year old who… asked what "hijackers" meant”.

But Fox also writes:

‘He said he hated President Bush. "He doesn't care about the people of this country and he doesn't want to hear what people have to say. I even tried to help him when I sent him an e-mail and he didn't respond back to me," said my son’

So we have a child who is precocious enough to find the President public email address, but not able to look up the word "hijacker".  This reeks of either a lie or a child who is being manipulated.

In either case shame on this Fox

I would like to see that book

I would like to see that book and see wah tit says.  I wonder about the publishing date and who wrote it.  Almost all the people on earth know taht there were only about 3K killed in the towers, with a few more from the planes themselves and some collateral damage elsewhere.  This boy will have some serious problems whne he grows up and searches for facts.  As it seems he is searching instead of just accdepting what his old man says.

I once worked with a liberal like this Fox. Every story he told was from his point of view and he always turned out to be the good guy. He swore his stories were true. After a while, no one believed a word he said. He became known far and wide as a B.S.Artist. Sorry Fox, I don't believe you. You are a B.S.Artist. Sadly, you work for a major American newspaper. Makes me wonder how many more like you work at the Washington Post.

NEVER, NEVER trust a liberal

A logical question

I would use the f-word if I saw him," Sean said. I had spoken to him about not using that word before; this time I just let it go.

Why not logically ask him if he wanted to use the f-word against the scumbags who killed the Americans and hate Americans?

Maybe I'll start reading the book "Gulag" by Anne Applebaum to my sons and tell them this is what will happen once the extreme left wingers take over.  See left wingers don't like to speak out against people who attack and hate the United States.  They want to silence anyone who doesn't think or act like them and send them off to gulags.

Here is a brief excerpt of the book if anyone is interested in reading this type of material to your young children.  Now of course I am not being serious, but it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out that this child was used to make a statement of look how bad President Bush is even a young child wants to cuss him out.  Maybe I can start using my kids to post on here and post their sayings about how bad Hillary or Bill are based on me coaching them.  I'm sure if I coached them into how bad Hillary or Bill are, that I could get them to say something cute.

Tim - this steve fox is an out and out idiot! He writes like a public school educated teen, "Then I remembered that whole censorship thing. As a journalist, I'm supposed to be against that. As a parent, I want all 9/11 books moved to the middle school library." He's becoming a "friend" instead of a parent. Sure, we should try to protect our children from the horros of the world, but reality is. Example: my daughter has to live with the reality that she will never walk. Remember, never is a really long time. THAT is reality. This dumb ass thinks he's doing well with his son - news item - be a father first, and leave the agenda to the rest of the schooling this little guy will get.

Look at his agenda - 'I'm supposed to be against that' - what a dip-%#&$@. His kid is a sponge, learning everything his "dad" is saying and doing in the house. Little fox want's to use the F-bomb - where'd he learn that Mr. Fox? Got news for 'ya - what's said at home, is learned at home. If the guy had REAL guts, he'd let the product of his loins experience ALL that was available to his age. But, then he might be exposed to truth, justice and the American way - something this liberal "journalist" would never allow. His few words speak vloumes. A coward is he, j'acuse! Mr. Fox.

When asked why do they hate us - ask yourself, why do they kill their own? Why don't they become better themselves? Why do they prove that we are smarter then they? J'acuse Mr. Fox, for not dealing with the truth and being honest with yourself.

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

This story has the stench

The Media Wonks

First of all, did the mans son want to throw the "F" word before his father told him his side or after? Just a guess that his father may have had some influence on that decision.

SInce I'm raising a granddaughter, I've been fairly careful about what I say to her about the politics etc. of 9/11 and the aftermath. She told me one day that, "Arabs are bad people." I had to point out that they're not all bad people but there were some who were. (I hate absolutes). I pointed out that there are people murdered every day, in the United States, but we're not all bad people and left it at that.

My point isn't the comparison as much as the learning experience. My granddaughter will have to look at things realistically and form opinions on her own with just a little influence from me whereby Steve Fox's son has already learned the hatred of the left and will either have to grow out of it or become part of the problem.

Liberals can say all they want about how good they are, what I see here is a person that is already instilling hate in his son because of how he feels. Who's to say where we will all be when is son grows up? He could be hating the wrong people by then and where will his father be?

Don't hate absolutes. Absolut

Don't hate absolutes. Absolutes are good. But you can hate overgeneralizations, like "all Arabs are bad."

Hmmm what about "all ter

Hmmm what about "all terrorism is bad", is that an absolute or a generalization?  Moreover is it true?

Republican Jr. came to me the other day with the same book.

"Daddy," he said, "why did the September 11th happen?"

"Son," I replied, "grab daddy a beer and jump up here and let me tell you why."

Like a good boy, he did as instructed.

"Son, not everyone in the world has the priviledge that you have of living in an open society," I began, once again reiterating what I have posted time and time again at NB.

"What do you mean, Daddy?" he asked.

"Son, you and I and Mr. Fox and his snot nosed kid," I continued, "we grow up in a society where there are ideas freely spoken, competing for our attention.  There is open debate, so what you and Daddy believe has to live up to the scrutiny of a hostile media.  Can you say 'Useful Idiots?'"

"Bill Ahrkin"

"Close, son, but you're right in theory," I replied.  "So you and I are constantly challenged in what we believe.  Over the course of our lives, we learn new things and eventually, the truth comes out about our core convictions.  Some people are like President Clinton and don't really care about core convictions.  Can you say 'power whore'?"

"Power Oar."

"Close enough, son," I reply proudly.  "Anyway, most of us want to believe what is right.  So, when confronted with ideas that contradict our core beliefs, sometimes we have to face reality and adjust our behavior.”

I continue.

“Unfortunately, those mean grown ups that were behind the acts of September 11th, well, most of them grew up in what daddy and his friends refer to as ‘closed societies’.”

“What’s a closed society, Daddy?”

“It’s a society where people grow up under what’s called a ‘fascist’ a mean man that usually always wears a military uniform and rules over boys and girls in what’s called a fear society, where people are afraid to tell the man in the uniform what a blithering statist idiot he is.  In fact, most of them don't really know how big of an idiot he is, all they know is that he is 'the leader'.  He usually wins by '99%' of the vote, and like the American Media in the 90's, his media tells him how he's the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Can you say 'Eleanor Clift'?”

"Molly Ivins."

"Close.  Try again, son."

"Monica Lewinsky."

"Yeah, they're all pretty much the same person"

“Uh huh,” my boy replies.

“And so his economic and social policies forbid the nice people of the nation from prospering under a market economy, where there are milk and cookies for all the children.”

“Why does he get away with it?”

“Well, son,” I reply.  “In the past power whores like President Clinton lobbed cruise missiles at Asprin Factories in places governed by people like these statist idiots and then claimed to be handling the problem.  However, these people laughed at people like President Clinton, blamed the United States of America for the very plight of their nation.  And, these poor people were like sheep, with no free press or dissent to make them realize that the bad man in the uniform was the very piece of garbage that kept them in poverty.”

“I understand, Daddy,” my boy replied.  “I promise I’ll always promote Constitutional Government and Open Society.”

“I’m proud of you, son.  Now go get me another beer.”
