Another Scientist Slams Media’s Global Warming Myth

Despite the media and Al Gore’s ad nauseum contention that there is actually a scientific consensus for the existence of anthropogenic global warming, the facts speak otherwise. Conveniently, the media never interview folks who disagree with their fantasy, thereby making it easy to promote.

Of course, those interested in the truth know of many outspoken members of the scientific community who are not being bullied by the politics of the situation. Another in a growing list of such skeptics is Israeli astrophysicist Nir Shaviv who has been doing research for years to identify if there is any connection between rising levels of CO2 and rising temperatures. As reported by the National Post, Shaviv’s studies suggest otherwise (h/t Drudge), leading him to actually recant his previous position on this issue:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

"Like many others, I was personally sure that CO2 is the bad culprit in the story of global warming. But after carefully digging into the evidence, I realized that things are far more complicated than the story sold to us by many climate scientists or the stories regurgitated by the media.

"In fact, there is much more than meets the eye."

The article continued (emphasis mine throughout):

Dr. Shaviv's digging led him to the surprising discovery that there is no concrete evidence -- only speculation -- that man-made greenhouse gases cause global warming. Even research from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change-- the United Nations agency that heads the worldwide effort to combat global warming -- is bereft of anything here inspiring confidence. In fact, according to the IPCC's own findings, man's role is so uncertain that there is a strong possibility that we have been cooling, not warming, the Earth. Unfortunately, our tools are too crude to reveal what man's effect has been in the past, let alone predict how much warming or cooling we might cause in the future.

All we have on which to pin the blame on greenhouse gases, says Dr. Shaviv, is "incriminating circumstantial evidence," which explains why climate scientists speak in terms of finding "evidence of fingerprints." Circumstantial evidence might be a fine basis on which to justify reducing greenhouse gases, he adds, "without other 'suspects.' " However, Dr. Shaviv not only believes there are credible "other suspects," he believes that at least one provides a superior explanation for the 20th century's warming.

What is that culprit?

"Solar activity can explain a large part of the 20th-century global warming," he states, particularly because of the evidence that has been accumulating over the past decade of the strong relationship that cosmic- ray flux has on our atmosphere. So much evidence has by now been amassed, in fact, that "it is unlikely that [the solar climate link] does not exist."

The sun's strong role indicates that greenhouse gases can't have much of an influence on the climate -- that C02 et al. don't dominate through some kind of leveraging effect that makes them especially potent drivers of climate change. The upshot of the Earth not being unduly sensitive to greenhouse gases is that neither increases nor cutbacks in future C02 emissions will matter much in terms of the climate.

Even doubling the amount of CO2 by 2100, for example, "will not dramatically increase the global temperature," Dr. Shaviv states. Put another way: "Even if we halved the CO2 output, and the CO2 increase by 2100 would be, say, a 50% increase relative to today instead of a doubled amount, the expected reduction in the rise of global temperature would be less than 0.5C. This is not significant."

Be careful, doctor, for you’re bringing science into the equation. Most of these advocates hate that:

The evidence from astrophysicists and cosmologists in laboratories around the world, on the other hand, could well be significant. In his study of meteorites, published in the prestigious journal, Physical Review Letters, Dr. Shaviv found that the meteorites that Earth collected during its passage through the arms of the Milky Way sustained up to 10% more cosmic ray damage than others. That kind of cosmic ray variation, Dr. Shaviv believes, could alter global temperatures by as much as 15% --sufficient to turn the ice ages on or off and evidence of the extent to which cosmic forces influence Earth's climate.

In another study, directly relevant to today's climate controversy, Dr. Shaviv reconstructed the temperature on Earth over the past 550 million years to find that cosmic ray flux variations explain more than two-thirds of Earth's temperature variance, making it the most dominant climate driver over geological time scales. The study also found that an upper limit can be placed on the relative role of CO2 as a climate driver, meaning that a large fraction of the global warming witnessed over the past century could not be due to CO2 -- instead it is attributable to the increased solar activity.

His conclusions:

CO2 does play a role in climate, Dr. Shaviv believes, but a secondary role, one too small to preoccupy policymakers. Yet Dr. Shaviv also believes fossil fuels should be controlled, not because of their adverse affects on climate but to curb pollution.

"I am therefore in favour of developing cheap alternatives such as solar power, wind, and of course fusion reactors (converting Deuterium into Helium), which we should have in a few decades, but this is an altogether different issue." His conclusion: "I am quite sure Kyoto is not the right way to go."

Don’t expect to see Dr. Shaviv interviewed by Matt and Meredith anytime soon.

Noel, didn't you get the memo

Noel, didn't you get the memo? The Today show said the global warming debate is over. We're all gonna die, and it's our own evil American fault. Unless, of course, we unplug our cell phone chargers in time.

Seriously, thanks for posting another credible refutation of the GW "common wisdom." I am finding that I have the need more and more lately to be able to point to the few scientists brave enough to resist the hysteria with common sense. Kudos to Dr. Shaviv.

It really pisses off the libe

It really pisses off the liberal elite that 50% of Americans just won't get with the program. But as a good-will gesture, I've unplugged my electric toothbrush.

Thank you, Mr. Kafir. When the ocean levels don't rise and drown us all after all, it will be because of people like you who were willing to make the big sacrifices. Oh, yeah, and the brave, brave, all-knowing media, too, who wouldn't back down from their global warming message and thereby saved the world from certain doom. ;-)

The advocates of gw sure do hate the utilization of science, since science is evidence.

But a lot of people are taken in by this and other environmental things like "the hole in the ozone layer" because these concepts sound scientific and how can we argue against science. In discussions with people I've heard many times the lame statement, "How can it be a hoax? It's science." People are very quick to blindly accept something in the field of science. Which is why the MSM loves to declare how all these "scientists" say gw is real and could kill us all, etc. (while ignoring scientists who say otherwise, of course). They know some people will just assume it to be true if "scientists" say it is. They don't scrutinize the actual data and evidence for themselves but figure these intellectuals must know what they're doing. Kind of along the same lines where a lot of people will sadly do whatever a doctor says is necessary without asking any questions or getting a second opinion. After all, a doctor must know for sure what the best procedure is, they assume.

His point does not deny climate change.  It denies the impact of man on the climate to the degree that Global Climate is changing due to man's actions.  His point would be, "Hey, let's clean up our act, but let's not destroy our economic base; our energy use behaviors; and our citizen's very brains in the process.

The point being made by advocates of anthropogenic Warming is I am responsible for it and I need to feel guilty and therefore I need to change my behavior; change my form of energy use; and change my allocation of resources toward a centralized Global Government (like maybe the UN?)

"Among the proposals are taxes on the consumption of fossil fuels and on international currency transactions. The panel urges new ways to boost aid and investment flows to poor countries, and to assist countries raise funds from within their own economies through better political and economic management, including by improving their ability to collect domestic taxes. Such efforts would be supported by the establishment of an international tax organization and the holding of a summit that would address problems arising from globalization, the panel stated."  From Africa Recovery, Vol.15 #4, December 2001, page 22 (Report on UN Panel)

Sounds like a Liberal Dream, huh?  So, what are the problems arising from globalization?

"Economists have tended mainly to view globalization as a basically benign phenomenon, and so it may transpire in the long run. Yet few would dispute that its shortrun consequences, particularly for some groups singled out by economic forces, are likely to be extremely painful. And if this problem is ignored and little done about it, surely the neglect will not be easy to defend. More than that, even if globalization’s consequences include markedly increased productivity, so that wealth and income overall are bound to increase, there is no guarantee that the benefits will be universally disseminated. Indeed, we will show here that not only limited groups of individuals, but entire economies, may find themselves to have been damaged economically."  (emphasis mine)

See, the benefits will be disseminated unfairly.

So, the anti-globalization crowd has given up.  What they want to do now is redistribute the wealth immediately, rather than wait for the 'leveling' effect that is discussed in the above paper more thoroughly than I wish to cover here.

How do you distribute this 'wealth' fairly?  Confiscatory taxation might work, huh?

As ol' Hillary says:

...

Hillary Clinton says:  "I want to take those profits."

Did anyone else notice there

Did anyone else notice there was no mention of GW in the Today editorial this morning about the cold wave sweeping parts of America?  After all, it is the cause of all things above normal temperatures, so why doesn't it work for colder than normal?

Maybe they do know that all of the hype is not based in truth or reality and even they sense how much more ridiculous it would be to blame GW for natural weather extremes.

How long have weather records been kept?  Maybe 200 years at most, but we are suppose to believe that in thousands or millions or billions of years Earth has been here that the weather has never been worse than we have experienced in the last 50 or so.  Even many of the records we know of have not been broken since they were recorded.

Well, there was that big weat

Well, there was that big weather anomaly called the Ice Age. I'm pretty sure humans didn't cause that. Unless time travellers from our time are going to go back and plug in a million cell phone chargers or something.

Another Orwellian concept illustrated

Every time we hear about the "consensus" about Global Warming, we know that a large portion of the scientific community has effectively been labelled "non-persons".  To some, the argument is over if you can label someone as "unscientifc".  Orwell's book 1984 is being fulfilled before our eyes.

Where are the liberals?

Anyone ever notice that every time something is posted here about credible scientists who don't believe in man made global warming, that all the libs scurry away?  Where are all the armageddonists?  I thought all the scientists had a meeting and agreed to a consensus?

Won't some lib come to the defense of the cause?

Yep. They're only in threads about the media coverage concerning this angle. However, when I post about a scientist's views, all we hear are crickets from the alarmists.
