Hillary has let her sticky fingers show again. Will the MSM pay attention?
We're all familiar with her statement from 2004: "the tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
Speaking today at the DNC's winter meeting, she let that same Hillary-knows-best side show:
"The other day the oil companies recorded the highest profits in the history of the world. I want to take those profits. And I want to put them into a strategic energy fund that will begin to fund alternative smart energy, alternatives and technologies that will actually begin to move us in the direction of independence.

Thank you for covering this,
February 2, 2007 - 15:28 ET by aeroThank you for covering this, Mark. I've been steaming ever since I heard this Hillary clip on Rush's show earlier today. This is an absolutely outrageous statement for her to make, and it's even more outrageous that the MSM is ignoring it so far. They need to press her for clarification: Did she mean that she wants to nationalize the oil industry? Did she mean that she wants to take some portion of their profits? If so, what percentage? 10%? 50%? 95%? Under what legal authority would she "take" those profits, anyway? There needs to be some outrage over this, and I'm outraged that I'm not seeing any!
The MSM is so busy promoting its "Hillary is a centrist" meme that they probably won't cover this. It undercuts their soothing centrist message by showing very clearly what an alarming socialist she really is.

I've said for a long time, villifying Big Oil for gas prices plays well into the ingrained class warfare of many in this country. I've said this before, I don't want to hear any politician bloviate about the price of gas and how he is at one with those of us paying for it, when they refuse to repeal/suspend the 20 some percent a gallon gas taxes on all levels of government.

February 2, 2007 - 16:18 ET by HumanEventsDefinitely. Liberal Dems love to take, take, take. Especially King Bill and Queen Hillary. They couldn't even leave the White House without stealing vast amounts of expensive items. They think the whole world revolves around them and belongs to them.
Funny how they like to play class warfare and rail against the "greed" and profits of others like the oil companies when they are filthy rich, with more money than any Republican or Democrat candidate for '08. And Sick Willie makes a fortune every time he gives a "speech" (that skunk would have to pay me a fortune to listen to one of his "speeches").
Amazing how this wicked witch believes our money belongs to the government (her especially) so much that she has a hard time holding back from these "I want to take" statements that reveal what she's really all about.
And Hillary tell the truth? Never! It's more like she let the cat slip out of the bag in her insatiable lust for power, money, and control. And besides, this is just the tip of the iceberg in what she has designs on doing.

February 2, 2007 - 16:52 ET by aeroI'll never forget something I heard Geraldine Ferrarro say a few years ago in an interview. She was talking about how she opposes privatizing Social Security. She said something like, "If people want to set up their own retirement accounts, fine! That's great! But let them do it with their own money." Their own money?! Last time I checked, Social Security is supposed to be my "own money." I was flabbergasted at the hubris of this casual statement. She and others like her really do think the money we send to government is theirs, and we have no business whatsoever telling the government how we want it spent. Social Security in particular is a program that they usually pretend is our money, which will be paid back to us in some way. It's a trust, you see. But Ferrarro really opened my eyes with that one. I was young at the time, and not particularly plugged into politics yet, and this was the first time I heard a Democrat say something so casually blatant about how they see our money.
Some young pre-political person out there is going to have the same epiphany I did when they hear what Hillary said about oil profits. But that's only if the MSM bothers to mention it!

Oil company profits are lower in percentage than most other industries. The reason the oil company profits appear to be so HUGE is because just about every person in the U.S. purchases and uses either directly or indirectly their products.
So what about Hillary's profits? Do they belong to the 'Common Good'?

February 2, 2007 - 17:59 ET by theknight70I agree. Hilary is in full Chavez mode. I heard this comment about taking the oil profits and my first thought was "Take?????" I did not realize that Exxon's oil profits belonged to Hilary. I also thought that the Democrat Party was the all caring and all feeling party. Does she not know that @%80 of Americans are invested in the stock market? Does she not realize that retirees depend on these profits to help fatten their pension plans, i. e. 401k's. 403b's, or TSP plans of which she is most likely a full participant? I was infuriated when I heard her say she was going to "take" these profits. She has absolutely no understanding of the fiduciary responsibilities of these companies. She obviously has no clue how capitalism works or how this economy works. What a maroon.

February 2, 2007 - 18:51 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveSo true Naz,
The state and federal governments make more than DOUBLE in gasoline taxes than the oil companies make in profits (which are heavily taxed as well).
See this page.
And this one for a state-by state breakout.
The hypocrisy of the likes of Hillary and the others that do these types of things.
Gasoline is as expensive as it is at the pump because of the taxes these Liberals have pushed on us all. The national average (2005) was 45.9 cents per gallon, with a high of 62.9 cents per gallon in New York. At today's gas prices that is an average of 21% taxes...and remember gas was cheaper in 2005. That equated to a "tax burden of rougly $271 a year for every man, woman, and child in the United States." Not every driver--EVERY MAN WOMAN AND CHILD.
Truly appalling. We need to break Congress' dependence on OUR money.

February 3, 2007 - 01:22 ET by Mean Gene Dr. LoveWhich means that given just Exxon/Mobile's record profit of $39.5 billion, our federal and state governments raked in over $84 billion in taxes on the gasoline alone that Exxon/Mobile sold in 2006. Think about the other oil companies not mentioned or added to that figure: ConocoPhilips, Chevron, etc. In 2004 the combined federal and state governments took in over $92.6 billion in gas taxes...and that was from all gasoline sales in the U.S. that year. That means that collectively, the oil companies made a profit in 2004 that was 46% of the government's "profit" through excessive taxation.

That's the problem with Hillary and her ilk. They all feel it's perfectly acceptable to "take" that which they haven't earned from those of us who work to earn it.
And think about this.....the government already takes from Exxon, according to the article...2 1/2 times Exxon's profit in taxes. On top of that....there's the consumption tax on oil products that we consumers pay....locally around $.55 per gallon, which is about 25%. And that's just gasoline.
