WaPo Columnist: US Troops 'Naive Mercenaries' -- What Do We Really Owe Them?

Half-serious warning: those with heart conditions are advised to have their medications handy when reading this.

With Democrats in congressional power, are leftists feeling suddenly empowered to express formerly taboo views? First came a column in the Los Angeles Times arguing we have overreacted to 9-11. Now comes Washington Post columnist William Arkin to express contempt for our troops and question how much we really owe them after all.

Excerpts from The Troops Also Need to Support the American People:

  • "I've been mulling over an NBC Nightly News report from Iraq last Friday in which a number of soldiers expressed frustration with opposition to war in the United States. I'm all for everyone expressing their opinion, even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army. But I also hope that military commanders took the soldiers aside after the story and explained to them why it wasn't for them to disapprove of the American people."
  • "These soldiers should be grateful that the American public, which by all polls overwhelmingly disapproves of the Iraq war and the President's handling of it, do still offer their support to them, and their respect."
  • "Through every Abu Ghraib and Haditha, through every rape and murder, the American public has indulged those in uniform, accepting that the incidents were the product of bad apples or even of some administration or command order."
  • "We pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society?"

    Story Continues Below Ad ↓
  • DEFIBRILLATOR ALERT: "The recent NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary - oops sorry, volunteer - force that thinks it is doing the dirty work. The notion of dirty work is that, like laundry, it is something that has to be done but no one else wants to do it. But Iraq is not dirty work: it is not some necessary endeavor; the people just don't believe that anymore."
  • "They are young and naïve and are frustrated with their own lack of progress and the never changing situation in Iraq. Cut off from society and constantly told that everyone supports them, no wonder the debate back home confuses them."
  • "America needs to ponder what it is we really owe those in uniform."

Don't think the Washington Post didn't know what they were getting when they hired Arkin to write a column. Arkin is a man who once wrote a book divulging the secret locations of nuclear bases around the world.

Holy s---.

I'd say that WaPo finally hit bottom, except that I'm pretty sure they haven't. The left gets a lot of mileage out of their "chickenhawk" meme -- that the only legitimate proponents of the war are those participating. But if you ARE participating, who the hell do you think you are expressing opinions counter to the WaPo?

I hope you're right, that these creeps are feeling safe to come out of the woodwork now. I'd like to think they'll provoke a backlash.

Arkin

I wrote the Ombudsman for the Post to complain about this guy's first article. Deborah Howell said she was the ombudsman for the printed paper and that I should write to Jim.Brady@wpni.com. Just thought you might want to know.

This is the attitude of most

This is the attitude of most liberals. They try to hide it with empty words, but their actions are in lock step with Arkin's sentiments. I admire him for at least being honest about it unlike most liberals who are not.

No problem - we Republican Chicagoans think alike! I'm actually a suburbanite, but go into the City frequently. Didn't you find it ironic that people would be out protesting with torture displays all while the big torture scandal in Chicago was breaking? Here there was real torture and a cover-up and they are oblivious and they protest what happened at Abu Grab even though it was mild by comparison and people were actually arrested and disciplined for it. It's crazy - talk about naive.

The comments on the blog really let him have it, lengthy and scathing. I love the internet. It shines 400 watt spotlights on these traitors.

Are you kidding me!?I am &quo

Are you kidding me!?

I am "young and naive" and "frustrated with [my] own lack of progress"? Yes, there are some young and naive people in the military, but I would have to say that once one goes to combat, any naivete one may have had completely disappears. But to say we are all young and naive is quite arrogant and far from correct. Any "lack of progress" has been cause by the politicization of the war, not because of military ineptitude. The debate back home doesn't confuse us, it is the utter contempt the Left has for us that confuses us and more so when the Left claim to be patriotic.

Nevermind the rape and murder rates in the military/committed by military members is lower than the national averages, the Left continues to take the examples of the "bad apples" and equate them with the entire military.

This crap makes me physically ill to read. I fear that even losing a city to a terror attack still won't open the eyes of the purposely blind.

I urge all military members to write this columnist with your own comments

i guess this author needs to ponder what life would be like for him if America did not have a military to ... contribute to the defeat of nazi germany/imperial japan ... stand up to the soviet union and it's intent on global domination ... stand almost alone in its fight against radical islam

maybe Mr. Arkin should consider that without the deeds of our valiant men/women in arms he might be living in a country where writing such an article would earn him a public hanging on a lamp-post with the word "traitor" written on his chest ... or simply shot in the back of his head at his desk

of course, what do you expect from someone who probably wouldn't have the will to survive boot camp in today's military anyway .

I notice he's from Pomfret, Vermont. I'm shocked! Shocked, I say! Pomfret is in the Dartmouth College orbit, but is perhaps better known for being the home town of a couple of early leaders of the Mormons.

So I understand this correc

So I understand this correctly:

Support the war, never served - chickenhawk, unauthorized opinion.

Support the war, SERVING - lower-grade citizen, unauthorized opinion.

Even my Democrat-down-the-line voter parents cancelled their 32 year subscription to the Washington Post out of loyalty to me and my service. We disagree over pretty much everything, but neither of them try to minimize or negate my CHOOSING to leave college in my senior year to go to Iraq. Now that I'm back in school (for another few months) we're back to disagreeing about politics and life goes on.

I truly hope Arkin and all his kind continue to speak openly about how they feel. It's no secret the MSM represents and advocates for the left. The only unfortunate part of it is that Boxer, Murtha, Pelosi, et al don't have the stones to vote on their convictions. That tells me all I need to know about the left. Disagreement is part of what made this country great. Disagreeing with the Brits (twice) bought our freedom. Saying you disagree and lacking the strength to stand by your beliefs in the face of opposition.... Cowardice. In uniform or not.

Washington Post

As a business owner just outside the D.C. area I was recently considering using the Washington Post as a major advertising vehicle this year, but I just can't give any of my money to this paper. I will not allow any of my money go to people like this idiot. He has the right to say whatever, but I exercising my right by not supporting.

Dems get elected, anti-war rhetoric surges

What is the DEAL!? Man, the msm's gone nutso since Oct 06. It got worse-not better after the election, and once the Dems took office, it's like hardcore. These people are openly, freely, and comfortably declaring the war in Iraq is lost, all is doom, we must runaway to stay alive, yada yada yada. 911 was an inside job has gone from looney conspiracy theory to perfectly acceptable-now almost 40% of Americans claim the Bush Admin took part in attacking the US or allowed it to happen. Media outlets are completely free and unchecked in created ficticious sources, photoshopping pics, airing ENEMY PROPAGANDA VIDEOS AS THEIR OWN, and so forth. Now we get this out in the air, don't support the troops gig too.

Where is the line? Where is professionalism? Where is the media check and balance of power now that Dems have power-oh, sorry. It's still busy campaigning against Pres Bush lest he win re-election in 08.

The 08 race is in full fury-no doubt about that, but why still campaign against W, and a war that candidates do NOT want to end in chaos (chaos that they might inherit and then have to order another invasion etc).?

Don't Democrats have anything to stand FOR, or have years of being the opposition party left them only the ability to oppose everything with non-binding resolutions?

Up-side

If there can possibly be any upside to the dems taking control of both legislative branches as well as having always controlled the 4th branch, the msm, that they have always controlled, is that they cannot and never could resist grossly over-reaching. As the old adage goes, "The higher the monkeys climb the tree, the more of their butts you can see".

Having said that, their lust is tremendously greater than it has ever been due to the last few years of creating vacuum on the rear udder.

All of this is bothersome but is greatly exceeded by the Republicans who have turned-coat. I don't care what it takes and I have never voted for a dem in my life but these Republican tun-coats need thrown out of office at the next nearest election.

Thank you, William Arkin!  It is so refreshing to see an Anti-War Leftist tell us what he really thinks, rather than put up the charade of "supporting the troops but opposing the war."  You are a spoiled brat to the inth degree, one who has no concept of the cost of providing you your glass bubble of safety, cynicism, and comfort in a world of people who'd just as soon cut your throat as coexist with you.  But at least your telling us how you really feel.  Wish we could say the same for Pelosi,et al.

Ohhh, and it gets better...

Mark, if I should get banned

Mark, if I should get banned for this, I just want you to know that its been real. I'm sorry, but my patience with these traitorous people has all but expired, as this is about the agriest I have been since the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. I honestly believe I could chew through a box of 60D nails right now. The concrete-coated ones.

Dear Mr. Arkin;

Normally, this is the point where I would tell you to go and do something to yourself that for most of us is an anatomical impossibility.  In your case it is even more so as the instrument required for said exercise is currently protruding from your shirt collar. It appears you were born with that unfortunate condition.

People who feel as you do not deserve to live in this country. Furthermore, I have a feeling that if there is another massive terrorist attack on this country, people such as yourself, along with the other America-hating terrorist enabling types are probably going to encounter some, shall we say, serious hostility on the part of true freedom-loving Americans, as you and your ilk have gone far beyond just hatred for a president. I'm guessing many of you are going to be invited to leave. I'm further guessing many of those invitations are going to be something less than polite.  I say good.

You and your kind are now putting all of our lives, as well as those of our loved ones, in serious jeopardy.

Speaking purely for myself, I do not give a flying fornication what happens to you.

What really burns me it up this is just another form of censorship. From an idealistic standpoint I thought the newspapers were for free speech not against it. It seems to me that Mr. Arkin is just mad that some soldiers dared to stand against his views. I also find it bizarre he is attacking those who are sacrficing so he can have the right to be a member of the "free press". I wish his boss would send him away on a leave of absence and the condition of reemployment would be after he spent 1 year in military uniform. Perhaps he would get a better sense of what an enlisted man/woman has to accomplish for that wage:)

Ummm...Mine Is Worse With Very Bad Words

Dave, you were more restrained than I was. I was a very, very naughty minx as Simon Cowell would say. I emailed this creep and opened both guns on him. As a military spouse, I'm feeling the brunt of the anti-war fervor by people like him. Thanks so much for your support and good on you!

Here's a thought tumbler: I ignore you, you ignore me. I don't really care for your attitude and believe me when I say you don't walk in my shoes. Please stop replying to me. I've stopped replying to you (this is my last time). I'll tell you what you are...a toad. I care for you even less than Mr. Arkin. How about putting out a more substantial response than the shill trill that is often your reply to me?

emjem24,

Thanks. Believe me, it took every ounce of self-control I could muster to keep from going over the wall on this one.  These idiots have absolutely no clue as to the damage they are doing to this country.  If we aren't careful, the damage may very well reach a point where it will be beyond repair.

What nerve!

The helmet head actually has the nerve to respond.

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

Of course! Arkin could not

Of course! Arkin could not let this insolent act of lese majeste go unanswered. How dare the peasants speak up to a WaPo columnist! Don't they know their place? MSM exists to guide and instruct. It is mere oversight that Founders lumped the press into the first Amendment when they deserve their own co-equal branch of government.

And most of the readers once

And most of the readers once again ripped him a new one! My favorite response so far:

"So you were in Germany in the '70s,Bill?
I think I remember you....Didn't we smoke hash together near the Tiergarten one night?"

But sadly, there are still a few that agree with him:

"911 gave a window of opportunity to the right wing nutjobs you find here criticizing Arkin. They took over the US government and moved it towards a fascist right wing dictatorship. But now the American People have woken up to the lies, deciet, and crimes of the republican crimninals now in office. These rotten folks will now be driven from power no matter what the simple right wing minds here say. You folks had a shot at power and all you did was WRONG AND CRIMINAL! Now it is time for you all to go back to the dark caves you reside in and let the free people of America proceed."

MUST READ

I hope everyone reads this, especially Mr. Arkin. This was written as a response to his recent article...

Mr. Arkin-

I am an officer in the United States Army. I have deployed to Iraq twice, and been wounded once. I have had my soldiers killed and wounded, I have killed and wounded other human beings. I have carried wounded soldiers and civilians in my arms; crying in pain. I myself am permanently physically damaged by my experience.

Through all those events, I never shed a tear. Yet I sit here today crying; reading your original article and your rebuttal to the overwhelming response.

I am proud of what I do, what my soldiers do, the freedoms we defend, and everything we stand for. I proudly defend your right to publish your article, and it actually warms my soul to see free debate and discourse about any topic, because this is the only nation in the world where such completely unbridled discussion and opinion rage on in an organized fashion. That is the United States I am proud of, the one that has given me so much.

I decry and am ashamed of my fellow warriors who have lost their thin veneer of civilization and chosen to engage in the atrocities committed in Iraq. May God have mercy on their souls.

I have chosen to shelve my right to have an opinion on the war in Iraq. I support our effort to help the Iraqi people, depose Saddam, and promote a free(er) Iraq. Are we (or can we) still doing that? I don't know anymore. I have an opinion, but it is too visceral to be truly rational anymore, so I keep it to myself.

Overall, it does not matter. My country, almost unanimously, asked me to refresh the tree with my blood in Iraq/Afghanistan 6 years ago. That was this country, by referendum. As my country comes to terms with what she has done, and possibly chooses a different path, I will soldier on. I will guide and inspire my Soldiers to do the same. But, it saddens me to see so many of my brothers and sisters killed and maimed, only to find out my country either didn't mean it or had no stomach for it.

None of these are the reasons I cry. I cry for the lack of purpose, the apparent lack of caring, the lack of compassion you displayed in your original article and in this subsequent failure to apologize to me, my fellow warriors, and all those who came before me. Here's why.

1. I am not a mercenary. You could make me work two jobs and this would still be one of them, because I am that passionate about defending you and your rights. Many in the National Guard and Reserves do just that. My country needs professional warriors to do her bidding, and he is me, and thousands like me.

2. I have the right to express my opinion within the bounds of the UCMJ, as do my Soldiers. How dare you imply that I do not, or that I should reprimand them? We already accept an abbreviated set of rights willingly. Do not attempt limit my liberties that I have already willingly limited while I defend without complaint the unabridged version you are so rightly entitled to.

3. As an officer, my needs are met. However, in the three months leading up to my first deployment and the entire 13 month adventure, my pay amounted to 173 cents an hour. My friends and I logged our hours as a joke, but $1.73 is the reality. That equates to 19-20 hour days, 7 days a week, for 16 months. That's with the relatively lavish bonuses and benefits we receive while deployed. And I am an officer. Think of our junior enlisted, and find someone else in our great country that is willing to work so hard, day and night, no weekends, under fire, threat of death over their head, for so little? Find me one and I will retract this comment graciously. Of course, even when not deployed, it takes my wife and me quite some time to get through the line at the grocery store. That's because we get in line behind one of my fellow warriors, who with shame in their eyes and faces flush with embarrassment fill out their WIC paperwork because they don't make enough to support their wife and two kids (an average sized family).

4. This response is taking an inordinate amount of time to type, because I have only one functioning hand after being wounded in Iraq. I am trying as quickly as possible to use the medical system your (and my) taxes paid for to recover, so I can go back to Iraq and continue to fight for what you don't believe in, because I believe in you and my Soldiers. Still, I count myself lucky, as I received my Purple Heart next to a 19-year old warrior with both his legs amputated above the knee. No matter how wrong the majority feels the decision was at this juncture, that Soldier gave (I use the word gave deliberately) his legs at his nation's calling. Not for money. Not because he was too stupid to get into college. Not for the great benefits. Just because you asked him to. Please don't imply that this fallen hero is not entitled to the basic medical care he receives.

5. Given the opportunity, I would fight the Germans in 1944. Oh, to have that definition of purpose, that sense of righteousness! But, that is not to be. This is the war that this country has chosen for me, my peers, and my Soldiers. With its vagueness, dirtiness, ambiguity, undefined enemy, amorphous center of gravity, and undefined purpose. The actions of our administration, the decisions higher-echelons of our military, the blunders of the CPA, (I could go on) etc. aside; it comes back to one thing. America chose this fight for me, and I will fight it with all my skill and might until she tells me to stop. The woes and throes of the majority, hawks, doves, liberals, neocons, etc. mean nothing to me or those Soldiers you quoted. What matters to us is that you told us to be there, 3000+ of our brothers and sisters have died there, and we are still there. Change that - in reality, not in the abstract - and we will gladly leave and prepare ourselves for the next challenge and opportunity to defend your freedoms.

I am a Warrior, a Soldier, a Scholar, and a Patriot. This country has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to train and educate me. I am well-versed in our government, our demographics, our history, and our Constitution. Perhaps I am an idealist. To the end of my life or capability I will defend your rights and this country. I am proud that I live in a country where a free-thinker such as you can write an article so critical of current policy. But I am deeply hurt by the insinuations and accusations listed above. I request an apology, on the behalf of all the Armed Forces, for your insensitive and boorish comments. I only wish I could communicate with your entire readership the bitter taste of betrayal that is in my mouth as easily as you communicate your speech and thoughts.

With Respect,

A United States Army Officer

CT- An American Soldier

CT Your post is extremely well written. It is awesome. As you may know, my war was Korea. I only served for a little over 4 years. I was on a ship, protected from the elements and, most often from enemy fire. We were only hit once and damage to materiel was trivial and to humans was light. I have done nothing in my life to compare with the bravery of you and your soldiers. All I can say is I stand behind you and no matter how old or what condition I am in, if you need me I will stand beside you. My sons have not served but my nephews and nieces are military.

You and your soldiers are what will save this country. There are many of us who appreciate, completely, what you do for us. Most of us older people did not attend classes where the teachers and professors sneered at and mocked our military personnel. My teachers praised you and your accomplishments. We know you are in an honorable profession that calls for sacrifices that the rest of us do not have to make.

My heart goes out to the parents, spouses, family and friends of those who have paid the ultimate price to defend my freedom and my beliefs. Until the day these old lungs no longer draw breath, I salute you and I stand by you.

Godspeed to you and your soldiers.

Those of you who may read this and who have chosen to deride or look down on our troops, I will offer you this challenge--shut your mouths until you contribute ten percent of what these troops have done for us. And please, please stop with the impossible, "I support our troops but not our war". I, for one, have had enough.

Clear Thinker, how apt your h

Clear Thinker, how apt your handle.

First, thank you for your service to our country.

Second, Thank you for that response to that piece of trash. I tried to respond earlier, but my browser or NB would not let me. I've calmed down now. I have stopped checking my calendar for a free weekend to spend in Vermont. You said most of what I would have said if I could think clearly while chewing my desk.

If I may add one point. Those soldiers don't have a problem with the American people. They take issue with M Arkin, the Democrats and their "psycho-phants" in the liberal media. As do I.

If it's not the Crusades, it's the cartoons.

MM  - Don't you find it iron

MM  - Don't you find it ironic that the guy makes this comment

"I'll accept that the soldiers, in order to soldier on, have to believe that they are manning the parapet, and that's where their frustrations come in. I'll accept as well that they are young and naïve and are frustrated with their own lack of progress and the never changing situation in Iraq. Cut off from society and constantly told that everyone supports them, no wonder the debate back home confuses them."

yet then the title to his follow up article talks about his detractors being "arrogant".  Talk about typical, Useful Idiot hypocrisy.

Mr Arkin, how does it feel to be an utter tool of a band of thugs?  If you are so much smarter and informed than the rest of us, stop being a Useful Idiot for people that want to destroy you and those around you whom you cherish.

Arkin the Arsehole

I'll just add him to the list of people that need to be locked in a porta-john and set on fire...     Keep talking libs..  You'll piss off somebody whom you wish you hadn't eventually.   Keep runnin your mouths.

Sure, I watch the MSM...     Through a pair of crosshairs.

Arkin the Douche

Notice his resentment of US Military in his opening paragraph?

".....even those who wear the uniform of the United States Army..."

DUMBASS ALERT:  The ARMY, you putz, is a branch of the US Military)  BUt you were so wound up yourself that you hadn't noticed your error... a$$hole

Sure, I watch the MSM...     Through a pair of crosshairs.

What happens when light is shined on this Arkin cockroach?

Contemplating William Arkin's comments and knowing they have traveled through out the U.S. armed forces around the world I wonder if this arrogant cockroach has found Salman Rushdie's hidey-hole.

I have a friend at Motorola,

I have a friend at Motorola, and my phone is with Sprint, I am letting them both know that advertizing in the washington post is a detrement to our relationships.  I am also wondering if they support and agree with these comments.  This guy doesn't get, that his ilk whatever the presumed intellect, would be one of the first to have their head chopped off by the nut jobs in the middle east.

I Emailed This Creep

I don't know where to begin with this one. I initially heard of this article when I read it on the Blackfive blog (run by a military blogger). My overall reaction to this creep is contempt. He doesn't understand the military at all, what it goes through, what it stands for, how it's operated, how people are trained, and even what military spouses and dependents go through.

The first comment: "These soldiers should be grateful that the American public...do still offer their support to them, and their respect," just makes me sick inside. I really don't feel that support or respect. In the real world I've felt it's utter lack when applying for a job and being told "we don't hire transients." The word "transient" is a word often associated with military spouses who are very vulnerable to discrimination.

The second comment: "We pay the soldiers a decent wage, take care of their families, provide them with housing and medical care and vast social support systems and ship obscene amenities into the war zone for them, we support them in every possible way, and their attitude is that we should in addition roll over and play dead, defer to the military and the generals and let them fight their war, and give up our rights and responsibilities to speak up because they are above society," literally makes me gag. This guy pats himself on the back as do his left-leaning weenie buddies because they feel the meager resources/benefits/salary they give the military and their families as just so many breadcrumbs are enough. Well, I would love this guy to experience what I have experienced the last couple of months. I don't have a PCM (primary care manager), I'm really in doctor limbo. Job opportunities...I wouldn't know...I have experience, 2 degrees, but that doesn't count in the town I live in now. Employers look for people to stay...I can only give them 2 1/2 years. Housing...it's very hard to find on-base military housing because of the long waiting lists so military families often must compromise and find housing that is either in unsafe areas, not adequate, or just overpriced (like in the area I live in now). Moving...I would love to know what the typical American knows what it's like to move every 3 years. Believe me, it's not a thrill especially when the movers don't care or take care for your stuff and ultimately break it. Then you must fill out claims paperwork for said damage, get said damaged furniture appraised, and whatever amount of money left over the government doesn't pay you have to.

The third comment: "The recent NBC report is just an ugly reminder of the price we pay for a mercenary - oops sorry, volunteer ..." is just upsetting. My husband is not a mercenary and neither are his brothers or sisters in arms. The military is highly educated, trained, and professional. They just don't take anybody (especially the Air Force who can pick and choose). My husband works late hours, often erratic, because of cuts, and not enough manning. Believe me when I say, he works for everything he's ever earned.

The fourth comment: "They are young and naïve...no wonder the debate back home confuses them," actually this is a misleading statement. Most are in their 20's and are both intelligent and wise beyond their years. More like selfless and courageous would be the words to describe what these young men and women are doing in Iraq right now in a war people have forgotten about, don't support, and plain refuse to look at with unbiased eyes.

The fifith and final comment: "America needs to ponder what it is we really owe those in uniform," mental midget Americans like this man will always owe me and mine more than they've ever given. That's right, you disgusting, traitorous bastard. The military has protected your right to spout off and all you can do is attack it return. This country not only treats its active-duty men and women deplorably it also doesn't hold its veterans in high regard. Most just quietly move on with their lives, already understanding how ignorant, pathetic, and uninformed the typical American truly is. They don't expect much and neither do their families. Unfortunately, this will continue unless something is done to bring to light problems that spouses like me face. I often just shrug my shoulders about this because most of the time, people don't think that spouses play a part in their active-duty husband/wive's lives. Who do you think picks up the slack when an active duty member goes on TDY or on an overseas tour. Who has to take care the family?

I'm sorry that this is long but I've had to combat such stereotypes when I first got married (and that was before the Iraq War). The military life is tough and that is why we have an all-volunteer force. Most Americans are pacifist, do things the easy way, bail out weenies. Hey, I've see them in my own family unfortunately. This country needs to really toughen up and I'm sure when the next nuclear, terrorist attack hits perhaps reason, understanding, respect will filter in for once. As a military spouse, I don't expect much but when even my own country and its citizens let me, my husband, and the military down, I feel discouraged, beaten down, despised, and mischaracterized. I guess this country hasn't learned much from the struggles it's gone through...it chooses to bury its conscience and responsibility in the sand like most of the civilized, Western world.

US soldiers are not mercen

US soldiers are not mercenaries, but I wonder, is it still politically-incorrect around here to call the various brands of mercenaries US taxpayers hire "mercenaries"? If so, too-bad, because I'm still callin' 'em like I see 'em and calling mercenaries what they are: "mercenaries."

Well the Arkin guy is an idiot

Well the Arkin guy is an idiot, like the other libs. After he whines about the soldiers who have heard the complaints from the people, he claims the soldiers are cut off from all that and are constantly told they are fully supported, so it's understandable they are confused.

That clearly indicates Arkin is a confused fool, who openly pulled a "Kerry", after he whined about the troops knowing what's being said back home.

That's the idiot liberal, unable to make statements without contradicting themselves.

I think Arkin misses the overall point to, as any msm lefty would. Arkin's own news, and the major networks have admitted years ago they aren't covering Iraq fairly, and claimed  that they cannot. They have fed a steady diet of propaganda to the American people for years, and therefore bear the brundt of the negative complaining about Iraq. The people, who are busy working and enjoying their lives, hear the complaining lying non accurate news snippet, and repeat the complaint in the poll.

When Arkin quotes the soldier who says the people should get over there and see what is going on, it should have really pissed off Arkin, as it insults his industry (the news) as they should be insulted. The soldier made his knowledge clear enough, that the news wasn't properly reporting, and made his appeal directly to the American people. It appears Arkin missed that entirely, making him the idiot again, beaten by a young soldier thousands of miles away. LOL ( That is funny)

I'm sure the military understands that a lot more than Arklin can ever hope to, because he is part of the problem, and wishes to deflect his own industry's lack of proper news delivery somewhere else, wether he knows it or not.
