NBC's Engel Relays Frustrations of Soldiers Disturbed by Opposition to War Back Home

A week after NBC News reporter Jane Arraf conceded that life in Iraq “isn't entirely what it seems” from the constant media focus on bombings, the Friday NBC Nightly News gave rare voice to soldiers in Iraq disturbed by criticism of the war back home. Embedded with the Army's Stryker Brigade's Apache Company (the Fort Lewis, Washington-based 1st Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Regiment; newspaper story) in Hurriya, Richard Engel relayed how “troops here say they are increasingly frustrated by American criticism of the war. Many take it personally, believing it is also criticism of what they've been fighting for. Twenty-one-year-old Specialist Tyler Johnson is on his first tour in Iraq. He thinks skeptics should come over and see what it's like firsthand before criticizing." Johnson asserted: “You may support or say we support the troops, but, so you're not supporting what they do, what they're here sweating for, what we bleed for, what we die for. It just don't make sense to me."

Staff Sergeant Manuel Sahagun directly took on the spin of war critics, complaining that “one thing I don't like is when people back home say they support the troops, but they don't support the war. If they're going to support us, support us all the way." Engel soon powerfully concluded: "Apache Company has lost two soldiers, and now worries their country may be abandoning the mission they died for.”

My January 19 NewsBusters item, with video, recounted:

Back in the United States from Baghdad, NBC News correspondent Jane Arraf, who joined NBC last year after eight years with CNN, conceded that life in Iraq “isn't entirely what it seems” from the constant media focus on bombings. In studio with Brian Williams on Friday's NBC Nightly News, she acknowledged how journalists are “really good at getting across the relentless bombing and the violence, but it's really a lot harder for us to portray those spaces in between. I mean, for us, we live in the city. It's as secure as it can be, but we wake up to the sound of car bombs. We feel the mortars sometimes. And in a horrible, inevitable way, it becomes sort of like the weather, and it's kind of the same for Iraqis. Unless they're in the middle of it, life looks amazingly normal."

Williams noted how “we get asked all the time....where's the good news we know is going on there?" Arraf conceded there's “a piece of good news that's out there every day that's really hard for us to get at,” and that's how “there are children walking to school, there are girls and boys, there are Iraqi girls who are walking to school, and it's that wonderful sign of resilience that is the fabric, the background of life there.” But, “to go out and do that story....we'd probably be putting those children in danger because that is the nature of television.”

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video for the January 26 NBC Nightly News report from Iraq:

Brian Williams: "Tonight we get to see American soldiers on the job in Iraq, and more important really we get to hear from them about all the talk about the war here at home. We get this view courtesy of our veteran Baghdad-based correspondent who is tonight embedded with U.S. forces as they prepare to be joined by a whole lot more U.S. forces. Here with our report, NBC's Richard Engel."

Richard Engel: "When the Stryker Brigade's Apache Company headed out this morning, they had one mission: to find bases for the new U.S. troops coming in. There aren't a lot of safe options in Hurriya. This Baghdad neighborhood has been overrun by Shiite militias that have forced out nearly all of the Sunnis. The company also checks out an Iraqi army outpost, but it's just a trash-strewn soccer field exposed to snipers. And there's a bigger problem: The Iraqi soldiers aren't staying on guard duty."

Unidentified soldier to an Iraqi soldier: "We came here to find you guys, and we came in here and no one was here."

Engel: "It's not just the new mission the new soldiers are adjusting to. They have something else on their minds -- the growing debate at home about the war. Troops here say they are increasingly frustrated by American criticism of the war. Many take it personally, believing it is also criticism of what they've been fighting for. Twenty-one-year-old Specialist Tyler Johnson is on his first tour in Iraq. He thinks skeptics should come over and see what it's like firsthand before criticizing."

Specialist Tyler Johnson: "-because people are dying. You know what I'm saying? You may support or say we support the troops, but, so you're not supporting what they do, what they're here sweating for, what we bleed for, what we die for. It just don't make sense to me."

Engel: "Staff Sergeant Manuel Sahagun has served in Afghanistan, and is now on his second tour in Iraq. He says people back home can't have it both ways."

Staff Sergeant Manuel Sahagun: "One thing I don't like is when people back home say they support the troops, but they don't support the war. If they're going to support us, support us all the way."

Engel: "Specialist Peter Manna thinks people have forgotten the toll the war has taken."

Specialist Peter Manna: "If they don't think we're doing a good job, everything that we've done here is all in vain."

Engel: "Apache Company has lost two soldiers, and now worries their country may be abandoning the mission they died for. Richard Engel, NBC News, Baghdad."

Brent,

Shocking. What does this tell us? Why would NBC air this piece? I'm frankly quite floored.   ns

Wow, Engel must be getting ready to be kicked out of Iraq to report the truth finally....

The S.O.B.!

Btw....I thought I saw him reporting from Beruit this morning somewhere, he may of already been...as he should be!

Thank you our fine military, and if you really take a look and break down the polls, their are tons of people that support you and want to win the war too...it is all how it is worded, we know you are smart enough to know the media has an agenda that has been going full throttle....stay strong, and believe we love you here and what you are doing is the right cause, thank you.

The politicians are shameless, they should shut their yaps, leave the war to the military, and do what we hate here, inflict more laws on on us, that are mostly for politcal reasons and moolah.

Money money money, agenda agenda agenda.

Stunning!  My  heartfelt wi

Stunning!  My  heartfelt wishes to all the soliders fighting for our country.  Please kick butt and come home safe.  Thank you for protecting me and my family, more importantly our country!

I know this is a stretch (SUPER strech), but maybe Murtha and Pelosi will cool their jets when they come back from Iraq. This is pushing it (almost to the point pigs fly) however one can wish they do.

Rnd...You got the 'when pigs

Rnd...

You got the 'when pigs fly' el correcto....

I wish the same as you, but I didn't even think it.

They are the enemy within.

Period.

If we're really really lucky,

If we're really really lucky, maybe The rag and Jabba the Hutt may never make it back, or maybe the Troops could accidentally misplace them.

Why is it that EVERYTIME a liberal opens their mouth, I feel a sudden urge to hand them a roll of toilet paper?

The real reason they are over

The real reason they are over there is simple: "political tatics"  They are catching wind that the "surge" is already working when the surge hasn't even happened yet and when the real surge happens it will be successful.

So this visit by people who lothe the military's own existance is calculated.   To me one of three things will happen

1) They find out the truth...have a 12 hour plane ride home...find out if Americans really get the truth what is happening over there is good; the Dem's are cooked for 2008 because they over sold their hand to American's defeat in Iraq.  Then they prevent the story from coming out and make it sound worse than what the media is even saying.  All of this in an effort to keep both chambers in 2008.

2) They get an earfull from our soliders about how they are not being supported by them. Upon return Pelosi pulls the "non-binding" resolution from the house calander.  (BTW. This is highly unlikely....but Hope is a town in Arkansas).  Combine this with the poll numbers on how American's liked the President's SOTU speach and Pelosi would be a fool to let the non-binding resolution to go through.  Pelosi is getting feedback from the dems performance at the SOTU.  She is a keen political tactician and sees a "slight" headwind developing against her party.

3) They get a few (under 100) soliders who are disgruntled. In true dem form they magnify this dissatisfaction into this monster or beast it isn't.  In doing so they justify their message at home is right and justified.   (This is the most likely PR senerio to me.)

All dems and Hagel are politically invested in America's defeat.  They must ensure that the "surge" is not successful or otherwise they are politically cooked in 2008.  This visit is to design political tatics from the battleground to ensure they don't get cooked in 2008.

I can't WAIT for the picture of Pelosi in battle garb being plastered all over my Sunday talk shows and paper.  Sometimes the unspoken messeages are more powerful than the message itself. (Tons of sarcasm intended)

On a side note.  Has anyone else other than me noticed that Cindy Sheehan's interuption at House leadership's press briefing the day they dems took over the House and she demanded that the war be de-funded; maybe moved up the dem's pressure to take this issue on and really overshadowed their "100 hours" agenda?  And hence forced the Dem's to overplay their anti-war hand? Just curious.

"Give me liberty or give me death"

The Surge is Working

Rndguy,

I think you may be on to something here.

The real reason they are over there is simple: "political tatics"  They are catching wind that the "surge" is already working when the surge hasn't even happened yet and when the real surge happens it will be successful.

Pelosi and her gang are merely spooling up the spin.  And I sincerely hope they are caught flat footed when the defeat they so long for just doesn't happen.  But will the media report it?

I think President Bush has a clue....a big one at that.  The MsM just simply refuse to believe him.  This is  a fascinating article about how we are going to handle Iran's meddling on a move forward basis....as part and parcel of the adminstration's plan.

As opposed to the dem's plan that they're still trying to sort out.  Oh right, no plan, just politics.

I would highly doubt that.

I would highly doubt that. They're going over there for PR reasons... and they have an ulterior motive. They are looking for reasons to pull out.

some times, my ear plugs aren't enough to block out liberal manure.

but maybe Murtha and Pelosi

but maybe Murtha and Pelosi will cool their jets when they come back from Iraq.

Maybe they'll get fragged in the green zone.

Support Our Troops

Rays of sunlight

I don't know how stories like this penetrate the fog of the media war, but it would be helpful if we let NBC know we appreciate it when it happens.

It's clear that we who really do support the troops need to put on a "surge" of our own, redoubling our efforts to let our troops see, hear, and feel that support.  There are lots of way to do that.  Now is the time.

A" for the Day, But We Watching

Sometimes media does get it right, and even sometimes bloggers get it wrong. Some network manager has to be saying do something different if your ratings are going in the tank...and you fire up your base to breathe fire at them with this story...then in the next sentence let's say Pelosi's Trip made her more convinced the President is wrong. Any bets?

Finally-

I generally never watch the news much less NBC but I am going to make a point of it tonight.  I swear I will be so glad to see this interview.  I am speaking only for me & my husband but it's like nails on a chalkboard when we hear that mantra "support the troops, not the war".  You can't have it both ways.  Either those in the media as well as the smelly protestors who will be in DC tomorrow don't get or don't want to get it-----you can't be half-assed on this one folks.  Either you support them all the way or get out of dodge.

After I view this, I will write an email to NBC & thank them for airing this.  This is a major frustration point with many military  members and their families.

I actually though am shocked their going to do this.

News is on, gotta run.

Happy Aloha Friday.

Those 2 Soldiers who are speaking the truth about the war critics back at home just bought themselves the "Worst Person of the Day" by Keith Olbermann....

He probably won't touch it. K

He probably won't touch it.

Keith is only interested in his right to disagree. He could never have a practical view of the situation. The words of incredibly brave people who sacrifice everything they hold close are not worth noting because noone is posting a poll reflecting their views. When all is said and done, this single point must be the story that got away. Or maybe the story intentionally ignored?

. . . But, “to go out and do that story....we'd probably be putting those children in danger because that is the nature of television.”  So, how long has it been that these (insert your favorite expletive) been telling us that they only "report", and have no influence on the "news"? This statement says more then what we've been told since 'Shock and Awe'. It also admits that what they are doing is being watched by our enemies! And THEY [msm (Lsm)] KNOW it! It also shows the effects on the people who protect all of us, even sloppy and lazy reporters. Lucky for us, here at NB, we've got people like Mark Finkelstein who actually "talks" with our protectors, hence we don't rely on the mainstream losers.

But doesn't it stike anyone else, as a coinsidence, that this was 'reported' on a friday?

I wonder if this lapse by N

I wonder if this lapse by NBC has anything to do with BOR and Fox news labeling them as the far left, out there network? Maybe this is a small attempt to try and refute those charges.

Liberalism is the philosophy of the stupid.

Slanted coverage has been a M

Slanted coverage has been a MAJOR PROBLEM since I was there in 2004 (and I'm sure well before then too). Yes, the coverage is bad now, but let's rewind to when the war kicked off; press coverage was biased almost from the very beginning. I have a number of stories I could personally relate about positive occurrences as a result of our occupation there, and I know there are THOUSANDS of other similar stories going untold by the "unbiased" mainstream media. Doesn't fit the template. The press knows it tells the vast majority of Americans what to think, and it will be damned if it tells them that GWB's foreign policy has been in any way positive.

Press coverage was GUARANTEED to be negative the second GWB won the 2000 election because the Supreme Court ruled in his favor over their chosen golden boy. Thank goodness they did, or we could have had 4 years of Al "the Bore" Gore, inventor of the Internet, to "lead" us through 9/11. GASP!
