Washington Post Profiles Glenn Beck, Lines Up Leftists To Attack Him

When the Washington Post notices a conservative personality with a front-page Style section profile, they are acknowledged that he may have Arrived. But that doesn't mean the profile will be nice. David Segal's profile of CNN Headline News and syndicated radio host Glenn Beck starts out on the front page as noticing Beck is a tad more moderate in persona than Bill O'Reilly, acknowledging his own faults and finding gray areas, and "he won't offer the righteous condemnations you'd expect from the God-fearing conservative that he constantly reminds viewers he is."

But turn inside, and Segal has profiled Beck for the purpose of a public whipping by leftists over Beck's questioning of Muslim Rep. Keith Ellison: "I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview with you, because what I feel like saying is, 'Sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies.' And I know you're not. I'm not accusing you of being an enemy, but that's the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way." Segal lines up the liberal critics:

Three groups have written to ABC urging the network to keep Beck off "GMA," the Associated Press reported yesterday. "That blatant anti-Arab, anti-Muslim bias has been given credibility on a larger news show is something that concerns us," Arab American Institute spokeswoman Jennifer Kauffman told the AP.

When "The Daily Show" re-aired the clip of Beck's question to Ellison, host Jon Stewart followed up with this thought: "Finally, a guy who says what people who aren't thinking are thinking."

The Beast, an alternative newsweekly in Buffalo, was even tougher, putting Beck on a list of 2006's most loathsome people, along with this description: "Even the leather-winged shouting heads at Fox News look like intellectual giants next to this bleating, benighted Cassandra. It's like someone found a manic, doom-prophesying hobo in a sandwich board, shaved him, shot him full of Zoloft and gave him a show."

Can we get any more desperate to find conservative-bashers than an alternative newspaper in Buffalo? After Segal reports Beck and his wife converted to Mormonism, he goes back to where he's comfortable, whacking the conservative oaf:

But if Beck has left jerkdom for good, what explains that Keith Ellison question?

"If I could take back the wording of that question, I would," he says, sounding genuinely contrite. He then says he was trying to make the point that moderates of every religion -- his included -- need to face down the extremists in their flock. How exactly his "prove to me" challenge was supposed to tease out that point is a mystery...

Maybe an attention-deficit host is exactly what an attention-deficit public wants. Listen to a few of Beck's shows and what strikes you most is the enormous ratio of words to substance -- how Beck can monologue for minutes at a time and leave behind almost nothing except the impression of great vehemence.

It's striking, too, how Beck can contradict himself without even noticing. On the same day as his pornography segment, Beck exults over news that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has called him "CNN's chief corporate fascism advocate," evidently because he thinks Beck is a global-warming skeptic. Not true, says Beck, and though he's flattered by the attention, he's irked that Kennedy apparently hasn't bothered to watch his show. (Kennedy, in a brief interview, says he recalls Beck voicing doubts about global warming a few weeks back.) "The point here is that people who disagree with me don't actually watch or listen to this show," Beck tells his viewers. "They're hearing what they think I would say, what they think someone like me -- you know, a conservative hatemonger -- would say."

David Segal is not this hard on liberals. (He described Connecticut Kos-monaut Ned Lamont as a "fiscal conservative.") David Segal is not this hard on communists. He has hailed Che Guevara chic. He has hailed rapper Teddy Riley of The Coup for making Bolshevism a hoot. None of these trends or their supporters have any connection to "jerkdom," just "cool."

I've been listening to Glenn

I've been listening to Glenn several years on radio. I believe he comes across better on the tube, IMHO. Here I think the Wapo is taking a swipe at HLN as much as they are at Mr. Beck. He'll be more amused at who is trying to smear him, than the fact that he is being bashed. Conservative's that have not already checked him out should do so.

Attacked by the WP...If I were Beck, I would be celebrating this moment.

I've not watched his show, but I will now.  After reading this, my initial impression is that Segal's description of Beck, nasty as it is, comes off making Beck look much less bizaare than, say..  Olberman or Cafferty or Imus..

Just a reminder from the Wa

Just a reminder from the WaPo that honesty and openess about difficult feelings and attitudes are not allowed, especially from a conservative!

Tolerance

So much for "tolerance" and "free speech". Liberals are such hypocrites. It's why their "message" is falling on millions of deaf ears. They are the enemy within and they prove it every day. As for Beck, he should be glad that he's getting under their skin and he should never apologize for what he believes to be the truth. Take a tip from Limbaugh's career. The same thing happened to him in the beginning. He laughed it off and continued to laugh at them --great formula for success.

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

Reminds me of the 9/11 commis

Reminds me of the 9/11 commission and Richard Clarke only studying back ten years prior to 9/11/01 to look into whole Mideast Region and how Saddam may have been reportable as maybe just the trigger to radical anti-americanism.  Still seems like at most only 75% of time in which Saddam moved pieces on his playing board to force America's hand, and really, boots on ground disagreeable presence.  Am thinking of walking around DC today with GORE written on my forehead just to remember to think thoroughly about how headlines from 9/11 would have read.   Gorey gore, more gorey than most pre Gore presidents have had to respond to.  Gore of Gore's war response expect to be (less/more) gorey than Vietnam.  Such gore said to be seen as unavoidable by Gore.  Maybe you all can just help my memory and keep me from looking like a billboard for Gore?

Sex, Lies and NO Video Tape f

Sex, Lies and NO Video Tape from the WP on this one....COMPLETELY fabricated out of whole cloth on the Muslim bashing front....the WP has joined forces with the Muslim Anti-Defamation folks in this country to soundly destroy Glenn Beck.....demanding that ABC pull him off the air because of his anti-Muslim bias.....these folks really know how to work the American media as do the terrorists abroad....

Nowhere to Run....Nowhere To Hide.....

Glenn is pretty cool to liste

Glenn is pretty cool to listen to.  He never claims he's an independent-minded journalist.  He comes right out and tells you he is conservative!  I wish that our politicians only half his spine!  Go Glenn!

I really admire Glenn Beck'

I really admire Glenn Beck's down-to-earth, common sense style of conservatism which usually transcends partisanship. His program on Headline News is one of the few conservative programs available on Canadian television without satellite or digital. I think his comments about Ellison were a reflection not merely on Ellison's Muslim beliefs but on Ellison's questionable past, such as his support for Farrakhan's Nation of Islam. Of course, the media has no interest in that particular brand of extremism. Beck, the conservative, is the intolerant fascist, not the guy who once supported the idea that white people are the invention of the devil.

Segal's profile is just the beginning. As Beck's influence grows, the media will launch an onslaught to try to destroy the man, just as they've done with O'Reilly and Limbaugh. It's really disheartening to watch, because I think Beck is a good man and I find his candor admirable.

Glenn Beck

This posting proves that Glenn Beck has "arrived" and earned a position of someone to be feared by the msm.

It is amazing to see the MSM

It is amazing to see the MSM go ballistic about his comment.  Did Ellison ever answer?  I've often wondered if the Imam at his mosque called for Jihad against America would he join?  An Imam at a mosque calling for Jihad against America isn't a far fetched thing.  A Christian minister calling for a holy war against America would most likely find himself without very many to preach to on a Sunday morning.

Many, if not all, of you are not "Mormon".  Even if you dislike and/or disagree with LDS doctrine please refrain from referring to the conversion to the church's teachings and joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as "converting to Mormonism".  It is not an accurate statement and there really isn't any such thing as "Mormonism" anyway.  Just in the interest of accuracy, right.

I think most folks who are

I think most folks who are not "Mormon" will use a phrase such as "converting to Mormonism" because it's a whole lot easier to say than "converting to the church's teachings and joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". I believe that the "Mormon" label is here to stay and there is very little anyone (whether LDS or non-LDS) will be able to do to chase it away (especially since there is a website sponsored by the Church called mormon.org).

As for Glenn Beck, I enjoy his radio show now and then. I have only seen his TV show once, and it was in the first week that it was on the air. Since then I've dropped expanded cable (What? No more CNN? How will I survive? :) ) so no more Glenn on TV. But I see his approach as likable, even with someone like Ellison whom he might "esteem to be his enemy". Seems like Beck might survive as a champion of a more polite discourse with the opposition, something that may in the long run be of great value to America.
