Did CNN Use Anti-Semitism to Defend Jimmy Carter’s Anti-Semitism?

As NewsBusters has reported here, here, here, and here, former President Jimmy Carter has gotten himself into quite a pickle over his new book about the Israeli/Palestinian issue.

On Tuesday night, Carter spoke to students at Brandeis University. CNN’s report on this speech during the 7PM EST installment of Wednesday's “The Situation Room” appeared to be rather anti-Semitic potentially in an attempt to deflect criticism for Carter himself expressing anti-Semitic views in his controversial book (video available here, h/t Hot Air).

Early in her report, correspondent Carol Costello stated:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Standing before a Jewish audience, he at times looked hurt, defiant and charming…Jimmy Carter faced controversy head on at the historically Jewish Brandeis University.”

According to an April 28, 2006, article on this subject by the Jewish publication Forward, only 50 percent of Brandeis students are Jewish. As such, Costello’s statement that Carter was “standing before a Jewish audience” at a “historically Jewish” university is not completely accurate, and some might say anti-Semitic.

Moving forward, Costello said the following: “His best-selling book, ‘Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,’ has enraged some Jewish leaders over that the use of the word "apartheid".

Though this is certainly true, it totally ignored all of the non-Jewish people in the country and around the world that were outraged by this. In fact, nowhere in her report did Costello address the fifteen members of the Carter Center that have resigned over issues surrounding this book.

I guess this would have deflected the point she was making that it’s only Jewish people who disagree with the views Carter expressed.

What follows is a full transcript of this report.

BLITZER: There are also new developments in the controversy over Jimmy Carter's book over the Israeli/Palestinian crisis. He spoke publicly and candidly about the stinging criticism and he actually apologized for the first time at least for one part of the book all before a very potentially unfriendly audience. Let's go back to Carol in New York -- she has the latest.

COSTELLO: His speech was certainly interesting to watch. President Carter, who has refused to apologize for any part of his controversial book, did. Standing before a Jewish audience, he at times looked hurt, defiant and charming.

COSTELLO (voice over): Jimmy Carter faced controversy head on at the historically Jewish Brandeis University.

JAMES CARTER, FMR. PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: This is first time that I have been called a liar and a bigot and an anti-Semite and a coward and a plagiarist. This has hurt me.

COSTELLO: His best-selling book, "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," has enraged some Jewish leaders over that the use of the word "apartheid". But Carter did not back down.

CARTER: I chose that title knowing that it would be provocative.

COSTELLO: But when it came to this controversial passage on page 213, that reads, in part, "It is imperative all Palestinian groups make it clear they would end the suicide bombings when international laws and the ultimate goals of the roadmap to peace are accepted by Israel."

Students told Carter the line suggests suicide bombings are tactic used in war and should only be stopped when peace comes. Carter did bend there. And for the first time since the controversy began, apologized.

CARTER: That sentence was worded in a completely improper and stupid way, for which I have apologized to many audiences.

COSTELLO: As for whether Carter brokered another peace accord with that mea culpa, Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz, who rebutted Carter's remarks, says no.

PROF. ALAN DERSHOWITZ, HARVARD UNIVERSITY: This was the Brandeis speech, and then there's the Al-Jazeera speech in which he mentions none of the above.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COSTELLO: I asked Mr. Dershowitz why Jimmy Carter would say one thing about his book to a Jewish audience and another to a Palestinian audience. Dershowitz says it all boils down to who donates to the Carter Center -- Wolf?

BLITZER: All right, an explosive charge from Alan Dershowitz. Thank you, Carol, for that.

At one time I thought Jimmy

At one time I thought Jimmy Carter was the last honest man to hold the U.S. Presidency. Then I see the words he gave on Al Jazeera vs. the words at Brandeis. You would be hard pressed to find a better example of someone talking out of both sides of their mouth.

Good thing Jimmy's a Christian because it's looking like Jesus is the only Jew who will be forgiving him of his sins.

Did CNN's Wolfman Hack happen

Did CNN's Wolfman Hack happen to mention that Jimmuh originally offered to debate his book at Brandeis, and then when Alan Dershowitz accepted the debate challenge, Mr. Peanut backed down and refused to debate him? In reality, Dershowitz gave his rebuttal at Brandeis a full 30 minutes after Carter's speech concluded.

Maybe we should call CNN the "Carter News Network" now.

The MSM doesn't seem to find

The MSM doesn't seem to find anything unusual about so-called statesmen who avoid face-to-face debate.  Hillary gets a similar 'by.'  And recently, it was reported that Al Gore declined a Danish newspaper's invitation to debate Prof. Bjorn Lomberg about Gore's Global Warming 'facts.'

HyunchBack- I did too- once I thought he was a decent fella even though I thought he made a lousy president- however, the more he went over seas after the presidency, the more it became apparent that he really does hate America and feels the terrorists are just getting a bad rap. I'm not convinced that he is a true born again Christian. God says to test the spirits and see if they be of God or not- and the fruit he consistently bears is rotten to the core!

So has CNN.

Go to where the sun doesn't shine all of you....kind of like your ratings are doing.

Keyword (or should I say, Codeword): "Jewish".  Meaning?  The crowd was, you know, those Jewish types, with Jewish points-of-view, and you KNOW what that means, huh? huh? And, I just KNOW they're all Jews, look at them already.  With their Zionist, racist bigoted biased points of view.   They are not open-minded or progressive, like my hero Jimmah is!  He builds houses for poor people, doncha know!  He doesn't even touch the ground when he walks, either.

Okay to make assumptions, isn't it, MSM representative at your boy Carter's appearance?Too weak to debate.  Can you imagine the media's response if Bush did this. All the names and labels. You got your real message across!  Good job with the agenda reporting, you have a future with the pro-terrorist, anti-American, all-powerful MSM.

Carter's age

I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but Jimmy Carter seemed to me to be the most visibly "aged" President (even with just one "too-much-spending but not compared to now!" term) during my lifetime. After that, he seemed to get a bit of his youth back by swinging hammers with Habitat For Humanity (a worthy cause, don't let Carter's association with Habitat prevent you from trying it and helping someone for a day, please!) and travelling around observing foreign elections for a few decades of leftism-but-relatively-sane-leftism. Then came this book....

Does anyone else see possible effects of old age here? It's a scary subject, but I know a number of other stories where age seemed to lead to a display of what was a formerly-hidden prejudice. The reason it's scary is when you try to think about just how you will manage to make a fool of yourself in your old age, or at least, that's how it seems to me...

Sarc,

In your old age, you make a fool out of yourself, just like in your youth. The difference is, you don't give a sh*t what people think!

It made me wonder what prejudices I'm hiding, but I think all of mine have been on public display for years unless I'm hiding them from myself, too, so maybe that won't be a problem for me. The other conclusion some might draw is that I'm prematurely-old right now.

Maybe some things just don't come out until you're really old. For example; as a youthful wage earner you want smaller government and less entitlements so you can keep more of your hard earned money. But, if and when you out live your means, all of a sudden the the thought of those young brats not sharing to keep you in fine cigars and decent liquor (the necessities of life) seems rather selfish of them. :-)

“…he at times looked hurt, defiant and charming…”

Sounds like another conflicted liberal to me.

If Jimmy didn’t realize that the word aparthied would be widely seen as having a racist/anti-semetic tone he has either lost his faculties; has abandoned the counsel of wise advisors; or has simply sold-out to Arab/Muslim supporters. Perhaps all three.

Jimmy, isn’t there a veranda somewhere in Georgia, with a nice old rocker? You could sit and relax; have a nice cool lemonade; maybe trade e-mails with Oooogo once and a while, but generally, stay out of the fast lane.
