Schumer Lets Slip: 'We Support The Troops' a Sham [Video]

"But we support the troops!"

Has there been any phrase that has been so used and abused by the Democrats as they seek to give themselves cover? But in one fell 'slip', Chuck Schumer gave away the game this morning: the claim to support the troops is a sham. Supporting the troops is merely something to be figured out later. It's an afterthought, to be addressed after Democrats, with some Republican support, rush through a resolution telling our troops that the mission for which they are putting their lives on the line is not just meaningless but absolutely antithetical to our nation's interests.

David Gregory interviewed Sen. Schumer on this morning's "Today."

View video here.

Gregory: "The Vice-President is dismissive of this [resolution] effort yesterday saying it's not going to stop the president, and in fact he goes further, saying this will be detrimental to the troops on the ground."

Schumer: "Absolutely not, and I think it's going to be shown, when this resolution comes up, and it is non-binding, my guess is that not only are we going to get a vast majority of Democrats to vote for it in one form or another, but close to a majority of the Republicans. And that is going to shock even Vice-President Cheney."

Gregory: "But how can the public really buy the Democrats support the troops but don't support the mission? How can you do both?"

Schumer: "Well, that's the difficulty. A resolution that says we're against this escalation, that's easy. The next step will be how do you put further pressure on the administration against the escalation but still supporting the troops who are there? And that's what we're figuring out right now."

Kudos to Gregory for posing the question. Thanks, too, to Sen. Schumer, for letting the cat out of the bag.

"We support our troops&q

"We support our troops" was born out of the Democrats' need to appear they weren't ant-military, when in fact, they are against using the military for anything other than Red Cross missions. It means nothing in the context they use it. If they said, "We appreciate our troops and the job they do", at least that would mean somethng a little more concrete. So, I don't know why Schumer and gang ae having trouble applying an empty phrase to their current stance. It's equivalent to the phrase, "Have a nice day".

The sham about to be whipped up by the msm is that the Dims do support the troops or they would have cut off funding. Too the msm the fact that they say such things as we can not win, we need a new plan, the troops are demoralized, they harrass women and children, they are terrorist, ect ect are irrelevant.

Brilliant, Mark.  Schumer is too stupid to realize what he just said.  I've posted that video link all over my cyber universe.

What the Republicans need to do now is take his video quote and hold a press conference, demanding to hear the Democrats' plan as to how they plan to support the troops.  And say we don't want it tomorrow, we want it now.  End with this ultimatum:  If the Democrats don't come up with their plan to support the troops by C.O.B. today, we will assume they really don't support the troops.

Come on, guys, this is a REAL opening here.  Take advantage for crying out loud.

Just now?

Why is it just NOW that the Dems are trying to 'figure out' how to support the troops while being against the war? Shouldn't a decision like this have been made oh say.... years ago?

Support AND Surrender???

Thanks - and thanks. I've been lurking for months now and trying to decide whether or not to engage in the debates here. I got home from my last tour in April 06, got out in May, and am finishing school. (I dropped out during my senior year after some 'non-representative' Islamic jihadis slammed a plane into the Pentagon and tried to kill my dad).

If anything, my time in the military - especially down-range time - has taught me that there isn't a 'small, unorganized movement within Islam,' but rather a large, well-orchestrated religion of death, determined to bring this nation to her knees. After years of following the MSM while deployed, I couldn't help but share Patton's sentiments: "The attitude of the American people as evidenced by the press and the radio is such that I am inclined to think that I made a great mistake in serving them..."

Imagine my relief, then, to see that there were indeed hundreds of blogs and news outlets unencumbered by the MSM's agenda of anti-Bush hatred and defeatism. Thank you NewsBusters for restoring at least a little bit of my faith in the will of this country to continue the fight not just as long as it's convenient, but as long as it is necessary.

Hearing the Democrats, especially in a context like this, try to explain how they can support the troops while at the same time advocating the failure of our mission amazes me. Their twisted logic and fallacies continue to be mainlined by our more disconnected citizens through the media. I dare any one of those who want it both ways (support AND surrender) to explain how the two aren't mutually exclusive. If you don't support the mission, you don't support the troops. Period.

Troika-- Young man I----

Troika-- Young man I----salute you and all young people like you. I had to sign on just to share that with you. You make me believe that there is hope for this country. You stood tall and fought for us. Now that you are in civilian life and back in school, I ask you to continue this selflessness and continue the fight in a different way. Stand up in your beliefs, in your school council and in your life. There are millions of us out here who support you and America. We have been too quiet. We keep electing people who knuckle under to liberal thoughts and beliefs. We need strong young Americans to guide our country through , the most trying times in its history. The enemy is within.

I second that! Well stated mi

I second that!

Well stated misterb.

Tens of thousands of Americ

Tens of thousands of Americans turned out for the March for Life - again. The important thing to note, though, is that an overwhelming number of them were in my age bracket (22-30). We ARE the future of this country, and it's amazing to see that youth is not an impediment to voicing an opinion. My experiences in uniform are skewed and biased since we all share a relatively similar set of values, but even here at Penn State, I notice most people agree with the basic idea that some things are simply WRONG.  Moral equivalency is on its way out.

Take heart.

This country will not simply fade away because that is the easy thing to do. We will fight, and we will remain. America isn't defined as some line on a map. America is ideas, dreams and freedom. You can't take things like that. You can't kill them. As long as there are those among us willing to strap on a flag, grab a weapon and stand a post, and those at home who support them unwaveringly, our ideals remain. No matter how hard the left tries to equate us with Islam (as not better or worse, just different) American ideas stand strong. We have survived wars, treason, spies, natural disasters and an overt internal movement to subvert our country. Still, our hope remains. That says all there is to say about the United States. In spite of it all, we remain strong.

Misterbill Excellent Post

I agree wholeheartedly with you, misterbill!  We need to have more conservatives who served in the military take up the gavel and serve in politics. I feel that right now, we have more self-serving spin doctors than honest, let's do it for the people type of politicians that used to exist. The liberals now serving in Congress accuse Republicans of being chickenhawks because they either didn't serve or don't have children who didn't serve (which I find hypcocritical from such types as Mr. Schumer). Let's prove them wrong and convince more of our young men and women to serve in Congress. However, I'm afraid that some have lost faith in the political process and either: a) tune out of politics or b) become democrats - examples are some of the bluedog dems that narrowly won Republican seats, Webb, Tammy Duckworth (didn't get elected), etc. The military is overwhelmingly a bastion of traditional conservativism and where we need to find new leadership. Even the public gives overwhelming support for the military as a trustworthy institution (in Gallup polls the last couple of years). It's time to act. We need to transfer experience from the military relm into the political relm so that our military men and women have full confidence that not only the country but it's political leaders trully support them, not merely giving insipid plattitudes that mean nothing.

Hey Schumer, Hagel, Warner, Collins and all your side-kicks in the Senate and the House...I have a bright idea...why don't you have a binding, not non-binding resolution to have a sense of the Senate that states

Instead of the message of defeat you are sending world-wide to the enemy with your cut and run, put up the white flag mentality just to save your rears when you are up for re-election or running for Prez, or free T.V. time as Hagel loves.

Hi Mark,

I just turned him on at a quarter after, very pleased to hear him talking about this exact subject, it is infuriating to me. I listened to the committee yesterday in bits and pieces during votes in the House, I was so sickened by the words coming out of the mouths of thoe who are supposed to represent us in this country, I also forgot to throw in Corker in above post, and Lisa Murkowski disappoints me ...again. But that in itself is a different story, I know her father would never say some of the things I have heard her support...oh well.

I still dare them to have a resolution that states we will settle for nothing less than victory!

Bless our troops!

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

It's just this simple

The priorty is opposing the President first, figuring out how to actually seek victory, to support the troops and their efforts, and how to cover up/spin their partisanship over patriotism is what comes after the fact...in a...by the way kinda manner.

Sometimes you see clearly

I support the Chicago Bears, but not their mission..... go Colts... (see how nonsensical libspeak is?)

That is hilarious...a political cartoon for sure!

That is absolutely hilarious and someone who does POLITICAL CARTOONS needs to use that very line.  Good one!

If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal.

thanks

thanks--I was sitting here reading some of the "support our troops" discussions and feeling like vomiting at the hypocrisy of our left leaning citizenry. Your post covers it totally. They (libs) do not want us to win, but they lack the courage to say so. They profess sadness at the loss of a single troop, but in their hearts they do not care how many are lost as long as they win their talking point.

Woe be upon you traitors and liars, the day is coming when you will pay for your hypocrisy.

Good Sports Analogy

Reelman, good sports analogy. Personally, I don't have a preference about who wins the Super Bowl anymore. I'm a Bufallo Bills fan and, well, you know what that means....I'm in the starvation, isolation, pity pool forest where all fans go who know their teams will suck into perpetuity. I like the Bears because they have had a classic year but the the Colts look better (if Manning has a good day that is, if not, the Bears will maul 'em....sorry). Anyway, perhaps if the dems spoke in sports analogies the public wouldn't vote for them anymore? Hmmmm....I'd love to see that happen but I know that it won't because politicians will never side with America until we're attacked again or their a%$es are fileted for the hypocrites they are.

I've Known This All Along

Schumer isn't the best spokeman for supporting the troops. I'd like to know how he would explain this high and mighty resolution to military spouses across the country. I heard the other day from whom I don't know that Senator Webb was a patriot. I wanted to gag. The man is a traitor and a turncoat. Every time I try to reconcile myself to the fact that Democrats now control Congress something like this makes me pull back. I love how the Democrats seem to need to convince themselves more than the public how much they "support" the troops. I don't buy it given my background and the fact that I have people I care about in harm's way. However, there are "some" people here (like tumbler) who think I should be more compassionate and understanding of others and their beliefs. You know, growing up as I did in a liberal, college town, liberals tried over and over to "convert" me from being a traditional Republican to a secular-progressive Democrat (where was their compassion and tolerance?). For a while (I shudder to think of it now), I bought the jive. I wanted to fit in but I just couldn't complete the conversion. This should be a lesson to all of us in these trying times. People (like Schumer) who want to pass a "statement" stating that they (dems and RINOS) really think that the mission in Iraq is a folly then back it up. Defund the war and stop with the doubletalk nonsense. You're doing a disservice to military spouses and the men and women of the military (who serve this country selflessly and who have given up everything for that cause). Where's the believe and sacrifice on the part of these sleazy politicians?
