Cheney Tells CNN’s Blitzer: ‘You’re Out of Line’ on Question About Daughter

On Wednesday, during an interview with Dick Cheney, "Situation Room" anchor Wolf Blitzer continued to badger the Vice President and quizzed Cheney about the month-old story of the pregnancy of his lesbian daughter, Mary. (Hat tip to Drudge) Cheney bluntly responded to the CNN anchor, " I think you're out of line with that question." That comment came after Blitzer, who appeared to be attempting to drive a wedge between conservatives and the Vice President, quoted a Focus on the Family statement, from December 6, 2006:

A transcript of the segment, which aired at 5:35pm on January 24, follows:

Wolf Blitzer: "Your daughter Mary, she's pregnant. All of us are happy. She's going to have a baby. You're going to have another grandchild. Some of the -- some critics, though, are suggesting, for example, a statement from someone representing Focus on the Family: ‘Mary Cheney's pregnancy raises the question of what's best for children. Just because it's possible to conceive a child outside of the relationship of a married mother and father, doesn't mean it's best for the child.’ Do you want to respond to that?"

Dick Cheney: "No, I don't."

Blitzer: "She's obviously a good daughter."

Cheney: "I'm delighted -- I'm delighted I'm about to have a sixth grandchild, Wolf, and obviously think the world of both of my daughters and all of my grandchildren. And I think, frankly, you're out of line with that question."

Blitzer: "I think all of us appreciate-"

Cheney: "I think you're out of -- I think you're out of line with that question."

Blitzer: "–Your daughter. We like your daughters. Believe me, I'm very, very sympathetic to Liz and to Mary. I like them both. That was just a question that's come up and it's a responsible, fair question."

Cheney: "I just fundamentally disagree with your perspective."

Blitzer

Left wingers like WB have no bounds when it comes to attacking Republicans. The only reason that he asked the question was an attempt to debase Dick Cheney. How pathetic an individual can he become?

Well Scott I commented on your part one of this interview and added this part in....it was great!

Blitzer was blitzed. Big time!

I love Cheney! He 'da Man!

No bias in the liberal media

No bias in the liberal media you say? Would it be realistic to ever expect the average "Democrat" being asked a question that contained one half the rancor of this question? Or even a tenth for Hillary? Not holding my breath for it to happen. "Fighters are fun but bombers make policy"

Cheney Tells Blitzer

This is one of the rare times when there is no connection between efforts and results.

Thwap! Take that, Wolf.

Cheney - take him down!

Seeing how former Bill Clinton's spoiled brat behavior is completely acceptable to the MSM, VP Cheney should have should have stood up and simply taken Wolf Blitzer down to the tarmac.

For goodness sake, all Chris Wallace did a few months back was ask Bill Clinton (softening the question by noting that "hindsight is always 20/20") if, as a book suggested, "Why didn't you do more to put bin Laden and Al Qaeda out of business when you were president?" That was enough for Clinton to erupt into a full blown temper tantrum. And the media comes to Clinton's aid and defends him.

Wolf Blitzer questions the credibility of the Vice President because of "blunders, of the failures" of the Iraq effort. Why couldn't Blitzer just ask a straight question, say, In hindsight,  "could you guys have done more," or "what could you have done differently to make Iraq more secure?"

An then Blitzer digs into the very personal matters involving VP Cheney's daughter. Oh come on, Cheney should have taken him down.

Let's see, the progressive economist, Dean Baker, said that Clinton's financial leadership during the late 90's was the worst since Hoover. He added that as a result, millions of Americans lost their savings and their college education funds for their children (knock one up for improving the education of our children). He also added that it would take years for the US to recover. Fortunately, President Bush helped us over that hump. Any journalist out there have the courage to follow up with Bill Clinton on that one?

How about Kosovo? Jimmy Carter condemned it. Nelson Mandela condemned it. Come on Wolf. Next time you have Clinton on, try this. "Mr. Clinton, with Kosovo looking a bit shaky again, if you could go back in time (hindsight and all) do you think it might have been wise for you to actually obtain the needed resolution from the UN? Why do you think none of us in the press then, had any conviction at all - why could we not ask you how you felt about Carter, Mandela and many others condemning your bombing campaign? Was it really about Caspian resources? Why was it, you fired Gen. Wesley Clark, and how come his supporters (and the MSM) never knew that you fired him?"

Oh, how about the personal side? In the back of my mind, I'm just sure as heck, that there are a heck of a lot personal items that a few in the media would like to ask Bill Clinton. About Chelsea, perhaps? About Hillary? How about some of those details of what happened there on the couch in the oval office? Does anyone think for a moment that all Clinton is going to say is, "you're out of line."

I want no harm to come to our

I want no harm to come to our President, but if something was to happen to leave him unable to fulfill his duties Dick Cheney becomes the man in charge.

The thought of this leaves liberals gasping for air. As for me, I would sit back and watch Cheney squash liberals as part of his morning routine.

Remind me to get to the point

Remind me to get to the point if by saying this first I fail to:  Having hung with NPR hot dog stand lunch crowd today and now listened to Lieberman and company on Lehrer New Hour,  I still come to say it is time to openly discuss the crusading of Bill and Hillary as champions of your (theirs only, though in your name?) policies and how such was as welcome as forced busing was at first in America.  We now have a President thought to be an oil first President championing green technologies and alterantive science more so than even Al Gore.  This President is really making us question ourselves now on our earlier suspitions on "compationate conservatism."  His State of Union speach last night was live on tv recorded as receiving above 85% positive rating as night went east to west.  Sometimes being called to the national stage can change the intended blessing of chosen names or just words.  How Dick "she-knee"  came to be base note of opposition and effected a daughter of his named Mary (Marry) Cheney (She Knee) is still beyond goal of discussion of even our currently elected Democrats.   Please "stay the course" Mr. President since the Democrats still don't see the risk of even slight misinterpretations of chosen words or proper names.

If a stare was a missle, Wolf would be a smoldering pile of ash. I love the look Cheney was shooting which clearly made Wolf uncomfortable. I'd love to see Olbermann handle something like that.... he'd wet his skirt.

They could discuss things a little more casually and get them worked out off the record and in a more casual atmosphere.

I've been thinking about this one, and it seems that the question is an interesting one. Remove the context of Blitzer asking it, say Hume asked it, how do you think Cheney would have answered?

Changing the context

Bal, how about this scenario?  Substitute Chelsea Clinton for Mary Cheney.  (I'm not suggesting anything about Chelsea, it's just a hypothetical.)  Would any journalist have the nerve to ask Bill or Hillary about any kind of scandal in their daughter's life?  I doubt it.  No politician should be held accountable for the acts of their adult, independent children.

I bet Brit Hume wouldn't have a problem asking that question of the Clintons. But then the question wouldn't be as interesting when posed to Democrats, would it? Because most don't see a problem with the whole situation.
