Vieira: President Bush 'Not Exactly' Like a Dog With His Tail Between His Legs [Video]

As Americans, we all enjoy the right to criticize the president. But particularly on august occasions like the State of the Union, most agree that the office of the presidency is entitled to a modicum of respect. Or not -- at least in Meredith Vieira's case.

David Gregory set the stage on this morning's "Today,"with his depiction of W's mood:

"The president was more modest in his approach, he appeared humbled, a real sense that he reconizes that it's going to be difficult to keep both Democrats and Republicans on board here as he tries to persuade the country to stick with him on Iraq."

That's when Vieira put her own vulgar stamp on matters:
"Yeah, not exactly like a dog with his tail between his legs but obviously no posturing, either."

There are times when I find Vieira's earthiness a refreshing change from her more buttoned-down predecessor. Then there are other times.

I'm thinking that next year,

I'm thinking that next year, the broadcast networks might just want to offer running commentary during the SOTU speech. While the president is talking in the background, their crack anchor teams can offer up criticism, color analysis, point out what they feel are errors, tell stories from the glory years of Clinton speeches, etc. Maybe they can even cut away (if they feel Bush is repeating himself) and do brief interviews with the Democrats in the audience - that way they don't have to wait until after the speech. This would also allow them to skip the post-speech charade of "analysis" and allow them to squeeze an extra sitcom in before the local news. Since the networks treat policy speeches as just shallow politics and all politics as a sport, why not just treat the SOTU speech like an NFL game?

Chris,

I am with you...it is a joke anyway. The msm thinks we are all a bunch of boobs who can't think for ourselves. Why does there always have to be the "analysis" after the speech. Oh well, it will all be over soon. After all we are already on to the 2008 election and it is only Jan. 07.

It'll never over, unfortunate

It'll never be over, unfortunately. If, by some miracle, a Republican is elected, the same old thing will happen in January of 2008, 2009, 2010...

Perhaps someone should tell M

Perhaps someone should tell Ms. Vieira that the President of the United States should never be like a dog with his/her tail inbetween his/her legs:) That goes if the President is a Democrat or a Repubilican.

True, but I think Ms. Viera w

True, but I think Ms. Viera would love to see this president up there assuming a humiliated posture - so she and he cohorts can all pretend that they don't enjoy the results of their efforts...

Why bother to carry the speec

Why bother to carry the speech at all? Just run the sitcoms and the next day on the Oprah Show, or The View, simply have the hosts and the guests make fun of Bush?

Then, that evening, have Katie or Wolfe analyse the comments from Oprah or The View? The MSM will be happy, the American people will be informed, and Bush will be bashed.

I suspect that, if they could get away with it, eventually, some might drop it  - if they weren't forced to carry events of national importance - I mean look how they cover the conventions. I don't know how it's required, but I think it is. I trust others here would know the specifics.

Mensa

The last thing I want to hear is a bubble-headed, brainless twit (who spends the majority of her time asking people, "Is that your final answer???") comment on what the President of the United States said!  I personally challenge Gregory and Meredith "Viagra" to the intelligence test of their choice.  How did we come to such a point in our lives that we are set upon by such dolts?

That's An Idea

Chris, I haven't commented on any, well, of your comments, but let this be my first opportunity. You're on to something here but let's go further. I say, that we should let Fox News and people who don't agree with the MSM crack some Clinton jokes and comment on how the military used to laugh behind his back. Or maybe comment on how scary it is that the man may become the equivalent of the first lady. Now, there's irony for you. Oh, and let's make sure that all the dems' dirty laundry is aired to remind the American people (who have no working knowlege of their responsibility as thinking, critical citizens) of these people's outright abuse of trust, corruption, scandals, and double standards. The MSM can spend all day describing all of Pres. Bush's inadequacies but that doesn't mean that AM (alternative media) such as Fox News and bloggers can't do the same. George Soros doesn't have control of everything yet.

I Don't Need Some Anti-War Nitwit Telling Me How To Feel

This woman is an utter biotch. No class, no objectivity, just outright partisan attack dog bitchiness. She fits right in there with Susan (smoker's voice) Estrich and Hillary Clinton. She is trully of small mind and mediocre personality and it shows on television. She is better suited to something like The View where there's nothing journalistic about it than the Today Show where there used to be such. Not anymore. NBC is trully liberal and if you don't see it you're wearing glasses with the wrong prescription.

Ms Vieira--bully

Ms Vieira--bully, She reminds me of the bootlicking sidekick of the bully when I was in grade school. She adds her snide comment while hiding behind the numbers of MSM deriding the President. If her cronies were to say something good about Pres. Bush, she would instantly change her story and parrot the big boys. What a creep!

Does she have any children?

Yes, and that's such studied

Yes, and that's such studied commentary coming from Meredith Viera,  an unabashed opponent of the WoT and the Bush Administration who proudly marched stride for stride with the Int'l A.N.S.W.E.R and Code Pink kooks in the anti-war demonstrations. When I think of fair, unbiased commentary I always think of Meredith Viera. Yeah right. NBC is in the toilet.
