This one is really waaaay too funny, and will definitely require all drinking vessels, flammables, and sharp objects be safely stowed.
Psychology Today magazine has a long study published in its January/February issue about the differing mindsets and personalities of conservatives and liberals. Who do you think the report praised, and who did it slam? Which ideological group was perceived as smarter, and which was considered more insecure?
If you’re having a hard time answering these questions, read this (emphasis mine throughout). However, please fasten your seatbelts, for you are about to be greatly insulted by one of America's leading psychology periodicals:
Liberals have more books, and their books cover a greater variety of topics. And that's just a start. Multiple studies find that liberals are more optimistic. Conservatives are more likely to be religious. Liberals are more likely to like classical music and jazz, conservatives, country music. Liberals are more likely to enjoy abstract art. Conservative men are more likely than liberal men to prefer conventional forms of entertainment like TV and talk radio. Liberal men like romantic comedies more than conservative men. Liberal women are more likely than conservative women to enjoy books, poetry, writing in a diary, acting, and playing musical instruments.
Pretty funny stuff, right? But it gets better, although you might have to find a more intelligent liberal to explain it to you:
As kids, liberals had developed close relationships with peers and were rated by their teachers as self-reliant, energetic, impulsive, and resilient. People who were conservative at age 23 had been described by their teachers as easily victimized, easily offended, indecisive, fearful, rigid, inhibited, and vulnerable at age 3. The reason for the difference, the Blocks hypothesized, was that insecure kids most needed the reassurance of tradition and authority, and they found it in conservative politics.
I’m not kidding. Check the link, through some water on your face, and come back here because there’s more:
The researchers—John Jost of NYU, Arie Kruglanski of the University of Maryland, and Jack Glaser and Frank Sulloway of Berkeley—found that conservatives have a greater desire to reach a decision quickly and stick to it, and are higher on conscientiousness, which includes neatness, orderliness, duty, and rule-following. Liberals are higher on openness, which includes intellectual curiosity, excitement-seeking, novelty, creativity for its own sake, and a craving for stimulation like travel, color, art, music, and literature.
The study's authors also concluded that conservatives have less tolerance for ambiguity, a trait they say is exemplified when George Bush says things like, "Look, my job isn't to try to nuance. My job is to tell people what I think," and "I'm the decider." Those who think the world is highly dangerous and those with the greatest fear of death are the most likely to be conservative.
Liberals, on the other hand, are "more likely to see gray areas and reconcile seemingly conflicting information," says Jost. As a result, liberals like John Kerry, who see many sides to every issue, are portrayed as flip-floppers. "Whatever the cause, Bush and Kerry exemplify the cognitive styles we see in the research," says Jack Glaser, one of the study's authors, "Bush in appearing more rigid in his thinking and intolerant of uncertainty and ambiguity, and Kerry in appearing more open to ambiguity and to considering alternative positions."
Amazing. But there was more:
That's why the more educated people are, the more liberal they become—but only to a point. Once people begin pursuing certain types of graduate degrees, the curve flattens. Business students, for instance, become more conservative in their views toward minorities. As they become more established, doctors and lawyers tend to protect their economic interests by moving to the right. The findings demonstrate that conservative conversions are fueled not only by fear, but by other factors as well. And if the November election was any indicator, the pendulum that swung so forcefully to the right after 9/11 may be swinging back.
Incredible. Well, that’s all I have to say on this issue, for I have to go protect my economic interests. Have a nice day.

January 21, 2007 - 02:21 ET by errant1Very much in agreement. Liberals have a greater tendency to be disrespectful. Liberals tend to be more anti-establishment, so they purposely dress differently. Also, to more accurately restate their findings: Liberals (have a)...craving for stimulation like alcohol, illegal drugs, and sex with people they're not even married to. I'd say this describes the Left Coast entertainment industry to a tee.

To expand on why they tend to be liberal while in high school and college, have heard young students call in to Rush and tell about getting bad grades when they disagree with a teacher or professor. Or, how if they dare write a paper disputing a professor's far left leaning opinions, they get a really bad grade. Point is, they are often forced to go along with the liberal indoctrination crap in order to receive good grades. It's more or less blackmail! Less fearful?---Think we are less safe now than ever before against terrorism
Well-read?---indoctrinated by lefty newspapers maybe
More intelligent?---I guess they prove that election after election when they refer to republican candidates as dumb, dunce, stupid or whatever, i.e. Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, GWB. They then went on to lose 2 elections to each of them.
Less fearful?
January 19, 2007 - 16:08 ET by Dave RThe idea of DimLibs being less fearful is ludicrous. If they are so un-afraid, why are they trying to have us conservative types outlawed.
As for them having more books, which is bunk as many liberals I know are too busy loading songs into their stupid Ipods or listening to NPR and watching some mindless TV show to spend much time reading. And as for the books they do have I guarantee you most of them are of the touchy-feely feel-good variety, or something having to do with WASP oppression. I doubt there is a real history book in the mix, or a biography of any of our past great Americans.
What planet are they talking
January 21, 2007 - 02:56 ET by errant1What planet are they talking about, indeed! However, I think I understand where they're coming from. Remember, during the Clinton regime, whatever Bill or Hillary said, usually the opposite was what was true. That because those two lie so much, because they had so many skeletons in the closet they were in the habit of denying things that were so obviously true. Remember how it was almost the story of the Emperor with no clothes on? The mainstream media never dared call the Clintons on their falsehoods. Even when talk radio would break seriously damaging Clinton scandals, the mainstream would rarely cover the story. And, if so, only briefly for a day or so. Remember those days of scandal after scandal, week after week, month after month? So long as Bill or Hillary would come out and lie about it, or provide us with "their version of the truth," otherwise known as spin. In other words, in a liberal world, the truth is whatever their leader says. Especially since the education system doesn't do a very good job of teaching students to think on their own.
So what should I be?

January 19, 2007 - 11:46 ET by ucMy issue hasn't arrived - no wonder I had these thoughts stirring this morning: So, against not just conservatives, but extreme radicals bent on terrorizing non believers whom do they say would best understand how to combat such? Maybe a women who spent eight years in White House already helping appoint a warring Christ. and then replace with a madams All-bright, or, maybe a young black little known junior Senator who converted from their religion to Christianity and could be read as standing for them doing the same. Also how does Psychology Today address Saudi Prince's arguement explaining America being attacked. Maybe it is time for a draft because if Hillary or Barrack are just the Liberals lead candidates let alone get elected our threat level may for some psychologically explainable reason go up. Mr. President thank you for only explaining middle east conflict in non-religious terms and not dictating to say new free Iraqies how they should live. Thank you for staying the course of letting them discover freedom and find their own solution while standing by just helping but not occupying. I share a belief that we at least owe these free Iraqies a chance at additional troops making a positive difference and feel that reevaluating at end of 2007 also is worthy of an article in favor. If it looks like Clinton or Obama have way into White House please consider increasing troop strengths and deployments around the world and police and coast guard forces here at home when such becomes maybe just likely. Having our boots on the ground and maybe more of them may be only way to win this war just for such being ambassadors of American's good will and respect.
We are up against opponents basing their mission on one book aren't we? No disrespect meant or intended.

January 19, 2007 - 11:51 ET by amberThis is pretty funny. I must be a total annomily. I have more books than any one I have ever known. When people come over they say, "Did you read all of those?" I actually tell people, some women have a thing for shoes, I have a thing for books. I taught myself how to spin wool, I am a very good artist, and my IQ is above the 150 standard that Mensa set. My ASVAB score was one of the highest ever, my recruiter did not beleive it at first and had to double check. My children are the best behaved kids, they do very well in school, are not agressive, do not talk back and I know my 5 year old is conservative. While reading a book about Santa, the book said Santa goes to EVERY house, I said I don't think he goes to everyone's house, I don't think he goes to a Muslim's house. Then I asked her if she could think of other groups of people who Santa skips and she said "the democrats". I laughed and then told her that Santa is not political.
I would also say that of all of the liberals I know, they are the least informed on the issues. they are the most moved by what they see on the 6 o'clock news and the least likely to take the time to search out answers for themselves. Amber You're So Right
January 19, 2007 - 15:16 ET by emjem24Amber you're so right. When I read this article I was saying to myself, "This doesn't sound like me at all." I grew up a book worm. My parents encouraged me to do well in school and to go to college. I've always loved history because like the Irish blood I grew up with, I love to real/write a good story. I know what it's like to grow up poor (which many liberals don't) because my mom grew up poor with little help or opportunities. Through sheer self-will, she put herself through college and didn't rely on others to do it (as many liberals insist must occur). My mom and dad are conservative as well and extremely independent (both are also from farming families which have been let down by the promise of liberal aid for years) so they've found other ways to survive. I feel like an anomoly because I was harassed by bullies (both male and female who I talked back to in words that they didn't understand) my entire life because I wanted to learn, I wanted more for myself. I didn't want to cheapen myself like I'd seen my sister do. Many women of our generation and now in the younger ones (like my sister) have given up on having a traditional family, have had promiscuous sex and not treated their bodies like they should be: temples. I feel like liberals see me as repressed or out of touch (believe me I'm not) but I see them as people who give in too easily, who don't want to fight the good fight, who want others to make their decisions for them, who want to succumb to a culture which values disrespect, dishonesty, tawdriness, taking the low road, and taking the easy road. All this saddens me (as a former teacher I've seen this in kids whose parents are surely liberal and don't give a damn about them). We will never know how great a country we can be until we expose the lies and deceptions liberals have been bribing Americans to believe for years.

amber, like you and others ha
January 21, 2007 - 03:29 ET by errant1amber, like you and others have said, I have always liked to read. And, I have more books than will fit on my existing bookshelves. Books on quite a variety of subjects. Through most of my school years, I was in the top 10 percent of my class. I have an interest in more things than I have time to read or study. Anyway, the liberals tend to be moved more by their feelings, rather than facts and data. Also, one thing you mentioned is rarely reported. That Liberals have more super rich and super poor in their pool of voters. And, yet, they purport to represent the "working man." And, every one of the demagogueing liberal politicians who speak of the so-called evil , rich Republicans are themselves as rich if not richer than the opponents they demonize. The level of arrogance and hypocracy of the liberals is astounding! Apparently, if they didn't lie and do their best to deceive voters, they'd never get elected!

January 19, 2007 - 11:51 ET by Dave PierreThis junk just goes to show you that just about any bozo with enough time, money, and effort can get a psychology degree and do "research." You can then get your "results" published if they fit into the liberal/PC agenda.
Articles like this underscore why it's difficult to trust psychologists. Psychology Today is making a joke of psychology by printing garbage like this.

January 19, 2007 - 11:56 ET by Chris NormanBy the way, isn't it Liberals who say we shouldn't stereotype people or put them into categories or draw inferences about people based on circumstantial evidence? Isn't this study doing all these things?

January 19, 2007 - 12:03 ET by FishFace222Hmmm. Anyone hear of any republicans/conservatives that sought counseling for Post Election Stress Trauma (PEST). Heck, the "disease" started after the election in 2000 and grew after election '04. Doesn't sound like happy people to me. Also, I'll admit that there are probably more creative people that are liberals but that just means they are better at making stuff up.

I think you touched upon something there, maybe the study is in response to some study a few months ago saying that conservatives are generally happier people? An unhappy person can not stand to see others happy, so they have to find a way to pop the balloon.

January 19, 2007 - 12:07 ET by Right2thePointI had a bit of insomnia last night and decided I wanted to try my normal sleeping pill of listining to NPR.
They usually bore me enough that I can go to sleep.
Any how it didn't work last night for a long time and I listened to several shows which had panels on them.
I swear not one of those panels had any body on them that sounded like a man.
I only heard males that I would only best describe as girly guys spouting like prissy school girls.

January 19, 2007 - 12:10 ET by buddyci am a conservative who loves classical music, has a huge library, am optimistic, hate country music, like jazz, am religious.
someone should sue that magazine for fraud. it is just like getting your news from jon liebowitz stewart.
Wow, hello buddyc!
January 19, 2007 - 12:50 ET by tumbler_2007You too are religious? (I'm a practicing Catholic who sins and repents.) You love classical music? Me too! Right now um addicted to Shostakovich, in the past have loved Brahms, Chopin, Mahler, Britten, Verdi, Rossini, Vaughan Williams, and countless others.
I have collected many fine books, both English (the greatest of languages) and Spanish (the most beautiful and romantic, --Italian same.) Books are essential for me, a high school dropout of the 1950's. I learned everything from books; art, religion, history (I read biographies) and even all about sex!
I'm also optimistic, I love opera, all the great Italian, German and Russian masterpieces. I like country western, jazz (a little) and movies. (I love Italian cinema, especially before La Dolce Vita, when it trended toward the disgusting.)
As for the magazines; all are ridiculous except some music reviews (Fanfare, Penguin, etc., ) Psychology Today is pathetic tripe, I agree! --YES, despite what many want to think in this fine blogsite; I'm a conservative too. You and I should be buddies, buddy //

January 19, 2007 - 12:13 ET by BeanManWell I'm just not fitting into the mold here. I love classical music, look at all viewpoints before making up my mind. I usually select the one that makes the most sense. I play a musical instrument (I have a 1968 Les Paul Custom). I must be several standard deviations out on their curve.

January 19, 2007 - 12:21 ET by FishFace222Liberals, on the other hand, are "more likely to see gray areas and reconcile seemingly conflicting information,"
Just like they did with WMD's. GWB says they have WMD's. We can't find them (could they possibly have been moved?) so GWB lied. That seems pretty black and white to me. Reconcile that.
Or GWB won 2 elections and therefore he cheated. That seems pretty black and white to me also.
