Networks Swoon Again for Barack Obama, Tout His 'Big Step' Toward Presidential Bid

Just as when Democratic Senator Barack Obama said he was considering a presidential campaign last October, his announcement Monday -- via a Web video that he has set up an exploratory committee -- unleashed media excitement. The CBS Evening News treated it as one of the two big stories of the day: “I'm Katie Couric. Two major stories tonight: A vicious attack in Baghdad....And Senator Barack Obama takes a big step toward running for President. He says it's time for a change.” After that tease, Couric announced: “Hi everyone. He's generated a lot of excitement. And now it looks like Senator Barack Obama is, indeed, jumping into the presidential race. We'll have more about that in a moment.”

Over on ABC's World News, which devoted more than four minutes to the topic, anchor Kate Snow trumpeted how “Democratic rising star Barack Obama takes a major step toward a run for the White House.” She soon trumpeted how “the presidential race got a major jolt today. The man who could become the first African-American President took a major step toward becoming a candidate.” Snow even spun a negative into a positive: “His political resume is rather thin, but in the 2008 race, that could be a plus.” NBC anchor Brian Williams teased “a big step tonight for Barack Obama” before touting how “a bit of political history was made today, kind of, when Illinois Democratic Senator Barack Obama almost declared his candidacy for President.”

NBC Nightly News, at least, held it's Obama story to a 1:30 piece from Chip Reid and Williams, unlike ABC and CBS, took 20 seconds to note the opening of an presidential exploratory committee by Republican Tom Tancredo.

Of the coverage aired on the three networks, only ABC's Jake Tapper uttered the “liberal” label in connection with Obama: “In recent trips to key early primary states Iowa and New Hampshire, Obama drew praise for presenting fairly traditional liberal views as fresh and inspiring.”

Last October 23, my MRC CyberAlert item, “ABC & NBC Hail 'Remarkable' and 'Exciting'
Obama Presidential Bid,” recounted the media's excitement after Obaama announced on Meet the Press that he was considering a presidential run. That thrill continued, as detailed in my NewsBusters item that night: “For 2nd Night, Nets Trumpet 'Political Phenom' Obama, a 'Sensation' and 'Rock Star.'”

The teases and story set-ups on the January 16 evening newscasts on ABC, CBS and NBC:

ABC's World News with Charles Gibson (4:15 to Obama story)

Kate Snow's tease:

“On his mark: Democratic rising star Barack Obama takes a major step toward a run for the White House. Why is a first term Senator causing such a stir?”

Snow's introduction:

“To political news now. The presidential race got a major jolt today. The man who could become the first African-American President took a major step toward becoming a candidate. Senator Barack Obama opened an exploratory committee to raise money and hire staff. His political resume is rather thin, but in the 2008 race, that could be a plus. ABC's senior political correspondent Jake Tapper joins us now.”

CBS Evening News (3:00 on the Obama story, not counting Couric's top of show tease and intro)

Couric's tease:

“I'm Katie Couric. Two major stories tonight: A vicious attack in Baghdad....And Senator Barack Obama takes a big step toward running for President. He says it's time for a change.”
Obama in exploratory site video: “I've been struck by how hungry we all are for a different kind of politics.”

Couric at top of newscast:

“Hi everyone. He's generated a lot of excitement. And now it looks like Senator Barack Obama is, indeed, jumping into the presidential race. We'll have more about that in a moment.”

Couric set up fpr the Obama story:

“Now to the Barack Obama story. After months of speculation, the freshman Senator from Illinois says yes, he does want to be the next President of the United States. The official announcement will come next month. But today he said he's forming an exploratory committee. Gloria Borger is our national political correspondent. Gloria, Obama had a thoroughly modern way of getting his message out today.”

NBC Nightly News (1:30 on Obama)

Brian Williams' tease:

“A big step tonight for Barack Obama. One step closer to running for President. Is it a game-changer for the Democrats?”

The story intro from Williams:

“And in this country, a bit of political history was made today, kind of, when Illinois Democratic Senator Barack Obama almost declared his candidacy for President. Officially, he's forming an exploratory committee, which usually means, unofficially, he's running. Chip Reid will explain all of it for us tonight. He's on the Hill. Chip, what are we seeing here?”

So Obama taking a step runnin

So Obama taking a step running for President ranks as one of the "big stories" but Tom Tancredo doing likewise doesn't even count as a mention. Hmmm. Could it be more liberal media bias?

Does he look a little like MR

Does he look a little like MR Potato head?  Oh sorry, that’s “the rising star MR Potato Head.”

Hey I agree, did Tom Tancredo even get mentioned?

America is best described by one word, freedom... Dwight D. Eisenhower

Tancredo may actually stand a

Tancredo may actually stand a chance because he is not exactly backing Bush in his bid to escalate the War.

Obama is a big threat to the right, otherwise they wouldn't be pummeling him like they are. Even if he doesn't get the nomination, if he's on the ticket, you can kiss the White House goodbye. Call him all the names you want, I'm sure he's dealt with that his entire life.

Have you ever seen the movie "Why We Fight" about Eisenhower's exit address? I highly recommend it. He was a republican you know.

Actually, I would like to kno

Actually, I would like to know what Obama is for and why we conservatives should be afraid of him.  No conservative that I know of is pummeling him per se, but calling him what he is: an empty suit devoid of ideas.  Unless you can tell me what his agenda is, and why I should vote for a junior Senator who has only served one-third of his term (and hasn't done a damn thing with that time), I'll keep asking the questions of what he stands for and why should I vote for him.

If you LOVE him so much, you should plead with him to get executive experience before running for President.  History demonstrates that it is the executives that are voted for the Presidency.  We haven't had a Senator go straight from the Senate to the White House since 1960, and no Representative has gone straight from the House to the Presidency since 1880.

In all actuality, he CAN'T handle being picked on.  Have you heard the audio clip of him whining to Maureen Dowd about how he didn't want his ears being made fun of?  That isn't exactly who I want representing the United States internationally.  What will happen if Hu Jintao or some EU leader, for instance, points out he has big ears?  Is he going to get in front of the camera crying like a five year old, screaming "They're picking on me!  They're saying I have big ears!  Ahmadinejad, that big meanie, called me Dumbo!"  (And Unsane will keep calling you Basset Obama for that reason.)

And before you start rejoicing over the possibility of becoming enslaved to a coddling, spoiling, spoonfeeding Big Nanny that will do ALL of your thinking for you...you MAY want to just go ahead and see to it that we actually have a campaign and hold the 2008 election...just to make sure.

Where in any of my posts do I

Where in any of my posts do I say I support Barack Obama? People here were asking questions and were obviously too lazy to do their own research so I did the heavy lifting and posted some info about him. I've posted things about Bush like him saying "mission accomplished" and "major combat operations in Iraq have now ended" and I don't support him either.

As for your Berlin quote, if you don't know the the difference between Cold War Germany and the current day political make up of the Middle East, I'm not going to help you out. If you want to talk about Kennedy, then I suggest you study how he handled the Cuban Missle Crisis. That's called diplomacy, you know.

funny, we wouldn't have the

funny, we wouldn't have the cuban missle crisis if the Cubans didn't think Americans were weak in the knees. President Kennedy may have been lucky with the Cuban Missle Crisis, but if he was a John Wayne cowboy, there would not have been a stare down in the first place.

"if he was a John Wayne cowbo

"if he was a John Wayne cowboy" -- Sure, thats what it's all about. A little game of cowboys and Indians. This is a perfect example of the simple mindedness of most of the common rightwing. I'm talking about the mouthbreathing ditto heads who know nothing about nothing and can't express themselves in an intellectual, or at least logical manner so they come up with gems like this. Kennedy wasn't lucky. He knew how to be a diplomat. Something we have NEVER seen in the Bush Whitehouse. Read the history of events concerning the Cuban Missle Crisis, that is--study a little history, ie. OPEN A BOOK and then tell me Kennedy was lucky.

Yes, Kennedy was lucky cooler

Yes, Kennedy was lucky cooler heads prevailed.  He was prepared to level the Soviet bloc, but of course you will never bother to cite that.  Vegetius had it right when he said "If you desire peace, prepare for war."

As for the present day, I sincerely apologize that my first response after the attacks on 11 September 2001 was NOT to recite the shehada, as you would have liked.  Nor was that President Bush's response.  President Bush, much to your rage, decided the best way to keep the country safe was not to invite OBL and Saddam Hussein over for afternoon tea, as you would have done.

Don't blame me for you inability to study history

Sounds to me like you are blaming me for your failure to study history.  Do you truly believe that freedom and liberty STOPPED being under the gun as of 9 November 1989?  I think you should enlighten me on the differences between postwar Germany and the current political situation.  I need something else to shoot down.  By the way, the way JFK used diplomacy was the pull the world to witing 15 MINUTES of all-out nuclear war.  You, on the other hand, would cede FL to the Cubans, I am sure.  That is how Leftists think; they carry the torch and spirit of Chamberlain well.  Diplomacy is NOT accomplished by just talking to people and promising that the United States is the most super-nice country in the world.  Please note also that when the Soviets deployed the SS-20s to the far western Soviet Union, we didn't talk to them for quite some time.  Instead, Reagan had GLCMs and Pershing 2s to Europe, and boy did that piss off children just like YOU.  (But tell me, what happened as a result?)

Apparently you do in fact support Basset Obama because you have been gushing over him like a schoolgirl all over this thread.  Why can't Socialists like you just be HONEST about how you believe?

Well, almost all-out nuclear

Well, almost all-out nuclear war is still no nuclear war no matter how you slice it. I've never had that big a beef with Reagan's foreign policy, other than Iran-Contra and his support of the Afghan mujahideen.

If you want to observe the differences between postwar Germany and present day Iraq, just look at the surrounding countries of each and ask yourself "democracy or dictatorship". I really wish I had more time to elaborate but I'll have to save that for later. Hate to cut and run but the socialist bus is leaving and I don't want to miss the communal meal. I SAID, I SAID THAT'S A JOKE, SON!!

Well, blarsen, allow me to retort!

So, as I asked you again elsewhere...to hell with Turkey, then?  They border Iraq, and they have been a functioning democracy ever snice Ataturk ran the place.

What of Israel?  Are they not a democracy?

Iran has a democracy.  What demolishes it, however, is the layer of theocracy papered over the democratic institutions.  While I am no fan of Iran's regime, engineered by the mullahs as it has been since 1979, I note that indeed the people there do like the idea of democratic institutions.  Maybe the United States will one day help them in that regard?

What of Lebanon's elections?

What of Egypt, who I would argue is at the same stage that Mexico was with its "perfect dictatorship" by the PR from 1929-2000?

Is democracy only good enough for blarsen?

The Germany that was occupied after 1945 was a very imperfect democracy for a brief period before the rise of the Third Reich.  When the Basic Law was imposed on them, there were people JUST LIKE YOU who were running around thinking that democracy was too far a leap for the Germans to make.  Sixty years on, however, they have proven the naysayers wrong.  Oh, yes, and if you want to judge strictly by terms of geography, don't forget that West Germany was ON THE FRONT LINE of the Iron Curtain.  Unfortunately for Churchill and the German people, the Iron Curtain began its descent at Lübeck, not Stettin.  Or are you perhaps telling me that the East Germans voted for the Socialist Unity Party without coercion and was otherwise a democracy?  Czechoslovakia certainly was no democracy.  And if you throw out the "inner-German border", you have Poland, which was no democracy.  All those countries to the north, west, and south of Germany (with the exception of Switzerland) had their democratic regimes propped up by massive U.S. aid from something called the Marshall Plan.  Sounds to me that if you were around in 1948, you would be pleading for Vittles to stop.  It DID cost 70 U.S. and British lives to accomplish, all for a people with very little experience in democracy.

What of Japan, and South Korea?

Before you ask me such a question as "look at the surrounding countries of each", try to consult a map first.  Please.

It seems that you hatred for all things military has blinded you to my point.  The Soviets weren't going to pull the missiles from Cuba until they faced a very massive, ugly threat.  What, you think that just talking about it in the Security Council worked?  Well, then, once again, your complete failure to study history betrays you yet again.  When the United States showed the will to carry out its threat, THAT won the day, not a gaggle of talking heads.  (If I were Secretary of State, I would be a diplomat who would be willing to walk from the table, and issue the following statement to the press: "Sorry.  We tried."  And that would be followed immediately by the falling of bombs and other ordinance until my opposite number figured out I was serious.  THAT is how diplomacy works, not your touchy-feely version.)

You see, the bottom line is, that unlike diplomacy, violence ALWAYS works.  Violence works every single time it is tried.  Don't believe me?  Ask your hero, Neville Chamberlain.

Hey unsane, It's been a pleas

Hey unsane, It's been a pleasure sparring with you and your boys. I don't have a lot of time to comment here, because I do have a life. I guess I've been misunderstood here and that's my fault. I don't hate the military, just their commander in chief who has them doing an impossible (yes, impossible) task. When James Baker and company gave him the opportunity for a face-saving exit, he decided to double-down on disaster instead. The theory of true democracy in the MIddle East TODAY is good only in theory. For every Turkey, though there is an Iran. I feel sorry for the Iranians especially because they really embrace Western culture, only their leader is a madman who has a formidable army at his command. I think most people in the Middle East really want political freedom in whatever form it may take, but the monarchs/dictators repel it vehemently. Demoracy works best when it's not forced upon people. It has to develop from within. Look at al-Maliki and his democracy. The leader of this democracy has the body of Saddam delivered to him and dumped on the ground at his residence. I admit the democrats and the republicans have their differences, but the party in power doesn't go trying to totally annihilate to opposing party. At least I'd like to think that anyway. Saddam had to go, I won't argue that. He should have been tried for all his crimes so we could have got more information from him that ultimately may have helped our efforts there. You say "violence always works". I'd say that too, but only for the side that wins, and unfortunately that's not always us. Wish I had time to go into your Marshall Plan comments and map and all, but I'll have to save that for another day.

too funny, you can not force

too funny, you can not force democracy, you can not force freedom. You can only enforce it by taking out tyranny. And make no mistake, Democracy is more powerful than nukes at keeping the World safe. The military is quite capable with the people there now to keep the peace, the problem isn't the number of men, its fighting the pc crap. If they could shoot without thinking am I going to go to prison over this...then you would have a very different situation there. The problem is not President Bush, its the media who has sold its duty to be Americans first and made it near impossible to fight to win. They made this into a vietnam. If everyone was united like we were on 9-12 we would have been done in Iraq a couple of years ago. Liberals Lie, Americans die.

Balboa, my friend, you can't be serious? Here too....

Of course, you bring up that

Of course, you bring up that address because you want to cry about a "military-industrial complex".  Sure we have one.  I am sure that thousands, if not millions, of people who got to join the ranks of the unemployed in the early 1990s in CA, among other places, would agree with you.  Not to mention the many on the south side of my town who were thrown out of work by military cutbacks.

You'll bitch about how evil this nation is, but here's betting that you thoroughly approved of the Soviet Union and their military-industrial complex, which they had; after all, the government controlled everything.

But then, you are a spolied brat who thinks that freedom is free, and that other countries permit us to exist out of the kindness of their hearts.  It must be nice to walk around with that much naivete.

Have you considered my JFK quote yet.  Obviously not, because it shatters your preconceived notions: "When we protect the freedom of Berlin, we protect the freedom of London and New York as well."  He was a Democrat, you know.

Seriously, what is his qualifications other than the fact that he made a speech and has been in the Senate for two years?  I realize that's how Clinton got the nod but at least he was governor of a state and had that experience behind him.  I don't know, maybe the gold will wear off but I doubt it.

Big business loves illegal aliens. RINOs love big business. Tancredo would be a non-starter with the people who control the party purse strings.

Obama sponsored 152 bills and resolutions brought before the 109th Congress in 2005 and 2006, and cosponsored another 427.[48][49] His first bill was the "Higher Education Opportunity through Pell Grant Expansion Act."[50] Entered in fulfillment of a campaign promise, the bill proposed increasing the maximum amount of Pell Grant awards to help needy students pay their college tuitions.[51] The bill did not progress beyond committee and was never voted on by the Senate.
Obama took an active role in the Senate's drive for improved border security and immigration reform. Beginning in 2005, he co-sponsored the "Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act" introduced by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).[52] Obama later added three amendments to S. 2611, the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act," sponsored by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA).[53][54] S. 2611 passed the Senate in May 2006, but failed to gain majority support in the U.S. House of Representatives.[55] In September 2006, Obama supported a related bill, the Secure Fence Act, authorizing construction of fencing and other security improvements along the United States–Mexico border.[56] President Bush signed the Secure Fence Act into law in October 2006, calling it "an important step toward immigration reform."[57]
Partnering first with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN), and then with Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Obama successfully introduced two initiatives bearing his name. "Lugar–Obama" expands the Nunn–Lugar cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons, including shoulder-fired missiles and anti-personnel mines.[58][59][60] The "Coburn-Obama Transparency Act" provides for a website, managed by the Office of Management and Budget, listing all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward, and providing breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract.[61][62] On December 22, 2006, President Bush signed into law the "Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act," marking the first federal legislation to be enacted with Obama as its primary sponsor.[63]
110th Congress

During the first two weeks of the Democratic-controlled 110th Congress, Obama sponsored eight bills and resolutions and cosponsored another 28.[64][65] His legislative activities during the current session's first days focused primarily on ethics and energy-related bills.[66][67][68][69][70]

What's good for the goose (liberals) isn't good for the gander (conservatives).  I've seen this too many times to count.  When a liberal apologizes you guys go ape over it and accept it and say, "let's move on."  When a conservative apologizes you demand his head and want him to resign immediately.

Give me a break.

Why aren't you demanding his resignation, blarsen?  Could it be that (D) by his name?  That little (D) that gives people the license to say and do anything they want with total impunity?

Balack Obama

First off, I heard his little announcement that he was going to announce whether he would decide to announce candidacy for president.  Him and his " I want your input on what you think needs to be done for this country..."  Look pal, what you are doing is cramming for the presidency test.  You have ZERO experience.  If you don't understand what people have stated they want over, and, and over again, then you are either grandstanding and riding your MSM wave to presidentioal "stardom", or you are a blithering idiot without a CLUE.  I suspect a little of both.

I resent the fact that you even THINK you are qualified for this job.  When are people going to vote on things that matter instead of how handsome somebody is?  One more thing.  THe MSM keeps calling him Black..  Why?  He's not.  But they'll keep spouting it because anything that isn't white is a step in the right direction...   Fools

Sure, I watch the MSM...     Through a pair of crosshairs.

If you guys want to see some

If you guys want to see some swooning over Obama read these comments at digg.com. Most of them enjoy the fact he has no experience. For some reason they see him as a "Washington Outsider".  They believe that speaking ability equates to intelligence.  They have taken the bait this guy has thrown out with regards to how he just wants to "unite" America, etc, etc, ad infinitum, ad nausem.  The more I read their comments the more scared I become for our future.

It's sickening, really.  Oh, and the article has over 5,000 diggs. When Edwards announced his candidacy, the article apparently only received less than a thousand diggs.  This guy really has the libtards in a orgasmic frenzy. It's disgusting.

Obama has nothing to run on

Obama has nothing to run on yet neither does sen Clinton. The interesting aspect in this case was how Obama so unexpectedly stole the spotlight. How does sen Clinton regain the thunder?

And an angel broke the seventh seal, and read from the scroll saying, “Behold, from the right hand of God comes the chosen one, Barrack Obama.  The lame shall walk and sick shall be well, the blind will see and the deaf will hear.  Those who are thirsty will have water, those who are hungry shall be fed.  There will be no more war, no more pestilence, no more disease.”  And all the angels said, “Thank God on High for Barrack Obama, the chosen one.  Hallelujah.”

All the nauseating puff pieces by the Chicago Useful Idiots, and I have yet to see one reference to his 98% liberal voting record.  What I have seen is a picture of Obama running out of the ocean shirtless.  Be still, my beating heart.

Apologies – no blasphemy intended with the above…….

oh, that's OK

Gee, I wonder what kind of whiskey Obammy drinks. I want to buy a bottle for myself. Cause, I want to be cooel.

Obama

I love conspiracy theories, especially when they’re mine – to wit;

Obama is a plant to keep the MSM away from Hillary so she won’t have to answer any legislative, domestic, or foreign policy questions. It’s a repeat of how she ran during her initial Senate race. I would even surmise that the MSM are complicit as they continue to swoon over Obama and pay little attention to Clinton. In other words – it’s working.

Then, at the appropriate time, Obama will bow out of the picture.

If she's more than five feet from her handlers she tends to go off the, um, "plantation"....if you know what I mean.

She's a nasty piece of work.  It's her nature.  And no matter how hard she tries to conceal it....it's never going to stay buried as she'd wish.

I'll make you a little wager.  Hillary has a major meltdown, or at least an extremely serious faux pas....within four months of announcing.

Blonde,

A meltdown will not occur because her speeches and answers are scripted, as they were today. As for the MSM, Bill has had them in his back pocket since he was first elected President - and the relationship continues today. The MSM were, and still are, his and Hillary’s main apologists and protectors..
