Two days after the National Alliance to End Homelessness released its survey which estimated that in January of 2005, “744,313 people experienced homelessness,” the CBS Evening News on Friday picked an earlier, more dire, guesstimate covering an entire year from the group with a self-interest in making homelessness seem as ominous as possible. Introducing an “Assignment America" piece from Steve Hartman on a homeless shelter in Gloucester, Massachusetts that “could be a museum, or at least a bed and breakfast” since it's “350 years old and beautifully restored,” fill-in anchor Russ Mitchell declared, “It's a sad truth: Too many Americans don't have a house to call their own. Over the course of any year, some 600,000 families find themselves homeless, and that includes more than 1.3 million children.” On screen, viewers saw matching numbers attributed to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, but in a study released on Wednesday, the group reported that its month-long survey located “98,452 homeless families."
A page on the group's Web site contends: “Most Americans underestimate how the problem of homelessness affects families. About 600,000 families and 1.35 million children experience homelessness in the United States.”
But for a report released on January 10, “Homeless Counts,” the group used “local point-in-time counts of homeless people to create an estimate of the number of homeless people nationwide. As with all data, the counts included in this report are not perfect and have numerous limitations, but they are the best data available at this time.” The organization determined that “in January 2005, an estimated 744,313 people experienced homelessness” as “59 percent of homeless people counted were single adults and 41 percent were persons living in families. In total, 98,452 homeless families were counted.”

January 12, 2007 - 21:12 ET by Conservative in the ArtsSo much for a chapter in one of Ann Coulter's books titled "how Bill Clinton solved homelessness."
The chapter was about how when Republicans are in power the media does all kinds of stories of how bad it is for Americans. Then the day a Dem gets elected, it's all sunshine and roses. I guess this kinda means she's gotta write a new book. Now, the homeless are all Nancy Pelosy and Harry Reids fault!

Not to be a drip about this...
But homelessness is a problem.
Is it the overwhelming problem of the day? Certainly not.
But it is a problem to be solved by local communities....
Not by Congress (sheesh...keep them out of my neighborhood...and when I say "they", I mean Congress...not the homeless).
I don't think I need Mom Nancy to help me figure this one out in my own community.
I volunteer. And (I hope) make a difference.
Get out of my local world, you liberal Washington idiots!

January 12, 2007 - 21:34 ET by Conservative in the ArtsBlonde,
I have a bit of some personal time with the homeless issue. During my time in college, I did a graduate paper about the homeless. I spent a week living with them. Every one I met had a home to go to, but chose to live on the street because of some "evil" family member that would not let them come home drunk. About 80% of the homless I stayed with made enough money begging that they stayed in a hotel every other night.
I know that there are times where people are hit with hard times. However most of the homeless are that way by choice. I'm all for helping people that want help, but what I see and know is that most just want a freebie. There are shelters and food banks run by churches, but the idea of God turns them away from a hot meal and a bed for the night.

January 12, 2007 - 21:47 ET by bigtimerI have had plenty of experience with taking people in, believing in them, trying to help out, ending up sorry most times I ever did extend my hand, it usually got bit off..they have to want to help themselves, usually and I say usually, they want a free ride.
I have not had it easy in my life, but I always had pride first..worked hard, ect.
I am glad I helped who I have in the long run, but if I were to do it over again, I hate to say this, I would not.
I was stole from, they played games and interfered in my personal life, I am not going to go into all the other things, but anyway, it was bad and sad. Every single one of them had jobs if they wanted, they did not. I know, I got them the jobs if they wanted them.
All of them took advantage of me, they were able bodied, but not willing. I had to kick them all out eventually...which is not easy.

Missing entirely from this CB
January 13, 2007 - 01:11 ET by UnsaneMissing entirely from this CBS story was how that little element called FREEWILL factors in. You see, I have a bum in my family, and she WANTED to be homeless. (You can ONLY help those who are willing to be helped, and that's the bottom line.)
And these people, who are mostly homeless out of their own freewill, for some reason are sick enough to drag children into their hell.
Can CBS tell me why this is MY problem?
Additionally, I worked in a soup kitchen and saw this problem up close and personal. Maybe if people stopped making it easy for people to be homeless, maybe it wouldn't exist. But that is just my cold-, obsidian-hearted opinion.

January 12, 2007 - 21:58 ET by BlondeCITA,
I suspect you are correct....most (or many??) of the homeless individuals are homeless because they choose to be in that state.
For those, rehab may work (at taxpayer expense, obviously).
My experience has been working with homeless families....and I'll do a double effort to try to help these homeless people.
The liberals just spew lies and statistics....and try to solve every problem by throwing money at it.
Homelessness for poor families (might I add, legal American families) is usually just one paycheck away.
Which is why this is a constiuency I support. They're mostly young, and just learning. And often times need a little hand up. A little bit of help, offered in the right way...reaps huge rewards.
Well....choose your own cause. I do.
Unless the libtard left is going to choose our causes for us. Sheesh!

getting even more personal, my aunt is homeless. My father bought her an apartment, furnished it and totally put her up. The landlord called to tell him that she sold all the furniture and was not staying there. If she showed up at my door, I would not let her spend the night. There's much more to the story, but won't go into it.
I totally agree that when it comes to families, it's a whole nother situation. Especially for battered women and their children.

January 12, 2007 - 21:24 ET by Clear thinkerHELP!
I need answers to this problem. Almost everyone that wants a job in this country has a job, so besides temporary homelessness, alcohol addtion, drug addiction, and the mentally unstable, who are the homeless?
I have some ideas but would like to hear others.
Addiction isn't a throw away number here big guy.
January 12, 2007 - 21:31 ET by acaiguanaAddiction isn't a throw away number here big guy.
And of course we all extend our hearts to the mentally ill.
I believe that addiction of all kinds is a generic human trait that affects a certain percentage of the population. I know people who can drink one drink but are addicted to heroin. I know people who are alcoholics that never touch drugs and have no interest in them, but have in the past used some or all of the various drugs.
Addiction cannot be thrown under the bus as a write off because it takes a toll on society and often people get stuck on this stuff before they are really mature enough to make cogent life decisions as to where they want to be and how to get there.
Look at the society that has been created by the Liberals and their selling of pop culture to our youth. And when I was young, I thought I'd live forever with a body that would never fail. And if I had a vague thought of consequences, I always thought it would be just forever before I had to take responsibility for my behavior.
So, homelessness is no simple problem. I don't think the government or money can solve it. But I see a legitimate role for community programs via churches and social organizations to work to provide a support system for those who need outside help (mentally ill or deficient) and those who have a desire to overcome their issues and move out of the street. I support these program with my charity and time when I can.

January 12, 2007 - 21:47 ET by Clear thinkerYou may have mis-understood what I was trying to ask. I'm not making fun of people with addictions or the mentally unstable.
I will try to explain... There are some that become homeless temporarily because of a tragedy... like a fire in a home that had no insurance and the people in it had no relatives to help. Then there's the ones with addictions that can't hold down a job, or learn to pay rent when it's due, everything goes to their addiction. Finally, you have those that don't have the mental capacity to support themselves and no family to speak of.
With the private sector, charities, and government programs out there, I wonder if there are any categories left for homelessness. The only one I can think of is...'lazy people', and wonder if these people are worth trying to help.

January 13, 2007 - 02:57 ET by Andrew H.Assuming the ultimate aim is to provide housing to everyone by the government, we know how well that works. There are no simple answers--people in need are nonetheless people in need and as a society we are charitable and should help in every way we can.
But to give each homeless person a dwelling, food, power and services through an ineffcient government program would seem to induce more to drop out, stop working and rely on you and me for their living.
Liberalism is a convenient lie.

Wanting is not having.
Homelessness is rather sad.....and a function of mental illness.
Having said that..there are many extremely poor people, who are tossed into "homelessness".
Which is why I volunteer locally.
There are many, many, many families who live on the margin.
They are the ones who deserve our help, and support. All they need is a hand up, and a hand out of a bad situation. I volunteer my time, and sometimes my dollars....to help these people.
As for the drug addicted homeless types....they are very sad. And need to be helped by our society as well....Gather them up....and keep them from preying upon the rest of us. Help them, if it's possible....but don't allow them to ruin things for the rest of our fellow citizens who need a bit of help.

January 12, 2007 - 22:00 ET by Clear thinkerBlonde...
If I come off as sarcastic on this issue, it is not intentional. We have a large local charity here in Asheville called ABCCM that has helped the homeless for many years and have done a great job. As the owner of a mid-sized company (until I sold it a year ago) we regularly took people from ABCCM and gave them entry level jobs. Some worked out, some did not. One that I am very proud of is now the production manager of the Asheville plant, and is doing well. Other than that I write a sizeable check every year to ABCCM. My point is... I do care.
However, our city council is about to break ground on an apartment complex. The type of which would normally cost $800 per month (this is considered a lot for this area). These apartments will all be top notch in every way, but they will only be for the homeless. Great idea? Here's my problem with it... there will be NO rules. Anotherwords, an alcoholic can drink themselves silly everyday in their apartment and never pay a penney in rent. This does not sit well with me.

January 12, 2007 - 22:03 ET by bigtimer...and will they be required to upkeep the apartment or lose it?

I have sat in on many of the public info forums on this issue and the council to date has not decided. Here's what I can tell you... they tossed around the idea of hiring (at minimum wage of course) one person from each floor to keep the halls and stairwells clean. Someone even suggested that extend to peoples laundry. They will also hire one of the tenants to act as the Mr. Fix It (maintenance engineer in PC terms). The tenants will pay for...
Garbage pickup... zero!
Utility bills.... zero!
Cable TV.... zero!
Food... supplied by local charities unless the tenant spends their own money on food.
And to top it all off... Security guards (so people won't be breaking in to get all the tenants high dollar stuff)... once again... ZERO!
