Olbermann Fumes Over Bush Speech, Suggests President is ‘Drunken Pest’

There’s really no other way of putting this: Keith Olbermann is a disgrace, and the idea that any major media outlet would give him a daily platform to spew his vitriol from is similarly so.

Such an observation certainly comes as no great surprise to NewsBusters readers who have been regularly subjected to videos and transcripts of this man’s vapid and insipid rantings since this blog was first started. Though Thursday night’s “Special Comment” on MSNBC’s “Countdown” was not necessarily out of the ordinary for Olbermann, coming a day after President Bush’s speech to the nation concerning Iraq, its contents were all the more offensive (video available here).

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Conceivably most disturbing – even more than the inflammatory rhetoric – was the errant conclusion Olbermann drew from the President’s speech that he continued to focus on: “an entrance strategy for Iran.” In a 2,936-word address, Bush spent just 201 words on Iran, mentioning the country by name only six times. Yet, that’s all KO heard, referencing the country fourteen times during his tirade thereby largely ignoring the other 2,735 words in the President's address.

For instance, here’s how Olby began:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Only this President, only in this time, only with this dangerous, even Messianic certitude, could answer a country demanding an exit strategy from Iraq, by offering an entrance strategy for Iran.

Only this President, could look out over a vista of 3,008 dead and 22,834 wounded in Iraq, and finally say "where mistakes have been made, the responsibility rests with me" — only to follow that, by proposing to repeat the identical mistake in Iran.

Did President Bush Wednesday evening propose an invasion of Iran? Hardly. Here are the key paragraphs where Iran was mentioned. See if from this you conclude that we’re about to invade this country:

Succeeding in Iraq also requires defending its territorial integrity - and stabilizing the region in the face of the extremist challenge. This begins with addressing Iran and Syria. These two regimes are allowing terrorists and insurgents to use their territory to move in and out of Iraq. Iran is providing material support for attacks on American troops. We will disrupt the attacks on our forces. We will interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria. And we will seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq.

We are also taking other steps to bolster the security of Iraq and protect American interests in the Middle East. I recently ordered the deployment of an additional carrier strike group to the region. We will expand intelligence sharing - and deploy Patriot air defense systems to reassure our friends and allies. We will work with the governments of Turkey and Iraq to help them resolve problems along their border. And we will work with others to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons and dominating the region.

Sound like an entrance strategy to Iran to you? Certainly, this wasn’t how the financial markets read this yesterday, with oil going down by more than $2 a barrel to its lowest point in 19 months, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing at a new all-time high. Think that’s how the markets would have responded if the President of the United States was offering an entrance strategy for Iran?

Alas, logic has never been a strong suit of Olby’s, and sadly for his viewers, he continued with this specious theme while regularly insulting the most powerful man in the world:

Only this President could extol the "thoughtful recommendations of the Iraq Study Group," and then take its most far-sighted recommendation — "engage Syria and Iran" - and transform it into "threaten Syria and Iran" — when Al-Qaeda would like nothing better than for us to threaten Syria, and when President Ahmadinejad would like nothing better than to be threatened by us.

This is diplomacy by skimming; it is internationalism by drawing pictures of Superman in the margins of the text books; it is a presidency of Cliff Notes.

And to Iran and Syria — and, yes, also to the insurgents in Iraq — we must look like a country, run by the equivalent of the drunken pest, who gets battered to the floor of the saloon by one punch, then staggers to his feet, and shouts at the other guy's friends, "ok, which one of you is next?"

Mr. Bush, the question is no longer "what are you thinking?," but rather "are you thinking at all?"

How despicable. Frankly, that’s as much of this nonsense that I can stomach so early in the morning. Those that are interested can read the full transcript that follows, and see just how often Olbermann suggests that we’re about to invade Iran.

In doing so, please remember that KO is an outspoken part of the extreme liberal wing of this country that has regularly stated the President exaggerated and cherry-picked intelligence information to garner support for the Iraq war. On Thursday night, Olbermann misrepresented and exaggerated 201 words in an almost 3,000-word speech to inflame his viewers into believing that the President is "offering an entrance strategy for Iran."

Anybody see a delicious hypocrisy?

OLBERMANN: And lastly, as promised, a Special Comment about the President's address last night.

"I have made it clear to the Prime Minister and Iraq's other leaders that America's commitment is not open-ended," you said last night.

And yet — without any authorization from the public who spoke so loudly and clearly to you in November's elections; without any consultation with a Congress (in which key members of your own party like Senator Brownback and Senator Coleman and Senator Hagel are fleeing for higher ground); without any awareness that you are doing exactly the opposite of what Baker-Hamilton urged you to do, you seem to be ready to make an open-ended commitment (on America's behalf) to do whatever you want, in Iran.

Our military, Mr. Bush, is already stretched so thin by this bogus adventure in Iraq, that even a majority of serving personnel are willing to tell pollsters that they are dissatisfied with your prosecution of the war.

It is so weary, that many of the troops you have just consigned to Iraq, will be on their second tours, or their third tours, or their fourth tours — and now you're going to make them take on Iran and Syria as well?

Who is left to go and fight, sir?

Who are you going to send to "interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria"? Laura and Barney?

The line is from the movie "Chinatown" and I quote it often. "Middle of a drought," the mortician chuckles, "and the water commissioner drowns. Only in L.A.!"

'Middle of a debate over the lives and deaths of another 21,500 of our citizens in Iraq… and the President wants to saddle up against Iran and Syria.'

Maybe that's the point: to shift the attention away from just how absurd and childish, is this latest war strategy (strategy, that is, for the war already under way, and not the one, on deck).

We are to put 17,500 more troops into Baghdad and 4,000 more into Anbar Province to give the Iraqi government "breathing space."

In and of itself, that is an awful and insulting term.

The lives of 21,500 more Americans endangered, to give "breathing space" to a government that just turned the first and perhaps the most sober act of any Democracy — the capitol punishment of an ousted dictator — into a vengeance lynching so barbaric, and so lacking in the solemnities necessary for credible authority, that it might have offended the Ku Klux Klan of the 19th Century.

And what will our men and women in Iraq do?

The ones who will truly live — and die — during what Mr. Bush said last night will be a "year ahead" which "will demand more patience, sacrifice, and resolve"?

They will try to seal up Sadr City and other parts of Baghdad, in which the civil war is worst.

Mr. Bush did not mention that while our people are trying to do that, the factions in the civil war will no longer have to focus on killing each other but rather, they can focus anew on killing our people.

Because last night the President foolishly all but announced that we will be sending these 21,500 poor souls over — but, no more after that — and if the whole thing fizzles out, we're going home.

The plan fails militarily.

The plan fails symbolically.

The plan fails politically.

Most importantly, perhaps, Mr. Bush, the plan fails because it still depends on your credibility.

You speak of mistakes, and of the responsibility "resting" with you. But you do not admit to making those mistakes.

And you offer us nothing to justify this clenched fist towards Iran and Syria.

In fact, when you briefed news correspondents off-the-record before the speech, they were told, once again, "if you knew what we knew… if you saw what we saw…"

"If you knew what we knew," was how we got into this morass in Iraq, in the first place.

The problem arose, when it turned out that the question wasn't whether or not we knew what you knew but whether you knew what you knew.

You, sir, have become the President who cried wolf.

All that you say about Iraq now, could be gospel. All that you say about Iran and Syria now, could be prescient and essential.

We no longer have a clue, sir. We have heard too many stories.

Many of us are as inclined to believe you just shuffled the Director of National Intelligence over to the State Department, because he thought you were wrong about Iran.

Many of us are as inclined to believe you just put a pilot in charge of ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because he would be truly useful in an air war next door in Iran.

Your assurances, sir, and your demands that we trust you, have lost all shape and texture.

They are now merely fertilizer for conspiracy theories.

They are now fertilizer indeed.

The pile has been built slowly and with seeming care.

I read this list last night, before the President's speech, and it bears repetition, because its shape and texture are perceptible only in such a context.

Before Mr. Bush was elected, he said nation-building was wrong for America. Now he says it is vital.

He said he would never put U.S. troops under foreign control. Last night he promised to embed them, in Iraqi units.

He told us about WMD. Mobile labs. Secret sources. Aluminum tubes. Yellow-cake.

He has told us the war is necessary because Saddam was a material threat. Because of 9/11. Because of Osama Bin Laden. Al-Qaeda. Terrorism in General. To liberate Iraq. To spread freedom. To spread Democracy. To prevent terrorism by gas price increases. Because this was a guy who tried to kill his Dad.

Because 439 words in to the speech last night, he trotted out 9/11 again.

In advocating and prosecuting this war he passed on a chance to get Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi. To get Muqtada Al-Sadr.
To get Bin Laden.

He sent in fewer troops than the Generals told him to.

He ordered the Iraqi army disbanded and the Iraqi government "De-Baathified."

He short-changed Iraqi training. He neglected to plan for widespread looting. He did not anticipate sectarian violence.

He sent in troops without life-saving equipment. Gave jobs to foreign contractors, and not Iraqis. He staffed U.S. positions there, based on partisanship, not professionalism.

He and his government told us "America had prevailed", "Mission Accomplished", the resistance was in its "last throes".

He has insisted more troops were not necessary. He has now insisted more troops are necessary.

He has insisted it's up to the generals, and then removed some of the generals who said more troops would not be necessary.

He has trumpeted the turning points: The fall of Baghdad; the death of Uday and Qusay; the capture of Saddam; A provisional government; a charter; a constitution; the trial of Saddam; elections; purple fingers; another government; the death of Saddam.

He has assured us: we would be greeted as liberators with flowers; as they stood up, we would stand down. We would stay the course; we were never about "stay the course." We would never have to go door-to-door in Baghdad. And last night, that to gain Iraqis' trust, we would go door-to-door in Baghdad.

He told us the enemy was Al-Qaeda, foreign fighters, terrorists, Baathists, and now Iran and Syria.

The war would pay for itself. It would cost 1.7 billion dollars. 100 billion. 400 billion. Half a trillion. Last night's speech alone cost another six billion.

And after all of that, now it is his credibility versus that of generals, diplomats, allies, Democrats, Republicans, the Iraq Study Group, past presidents, voters last November, and the majority of the American people.

Oh, and one more to add, tonight: Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

Mr. Bush, this is madness.

You have lost the military.

You have lost the Congress to the Democrats.

You have lost most of the Iraqis.

You have lost many of the Republicans.

You have lost our Allies.

You are losing the credibility, not just of your Presidency, but more importantly of the office itself.

And most imperatively, you are guaranteeing that more American troops will be losing their lives, and more families their loved ones. You are guaranteeing it!

This becomes your legacy, sir: How many of those you addressed last night as your "fellow citizens" you just sent to their deaths?

And for what, Mr. Bush?

So the next President has to pull the survivors out of Iraq instead of you?

Good night and good luck.

Keith Olbemann

Thank goodness MSNBC is so far down the ratings scope not many main stream Americans even listen to this hack.

Treason

I’m beyond done with this guy. As far as I’m concerned, any American who calls the President of the United States a “drunken pest” on national television during a time of war should be jailed. I’m not kidding, I’m not exaggerating, and I’m completely serious. This isn’t an issue of freedom of speech. This is an issue of providing aid and comfort to the enemy which constitutes treason.

I can see nobody bothered to

I can see nobody bothered to actually read the transcript. Olbermann didn't call the President a drunken pest. He simply said he was the "equivelent of a dunken pest." Kind of like if I said "Rush Limbaugh is like a swill sucking pig". Well, I would never call Rush Limbaugh that. It simply wouldn't be a very nice thing to do, besides--it's an insult to pigs.

I read it three times, thank

I read it three times, thank you.  I’m sure the Iraqis and terrorists that read the transcript won’t split the same hair you just did.  You are “like” someone who knows nothing, hopes that America loses more troops to support your goal of losing the war, and “like” someone who would be happier in an America ruled by Muslim extremists.  Is that OK for me to say?

blarsen is like

OK,

You're right! Blarsen is like a wart on the nose of Sean Penn.

Blarsen on the Execution Line

When the Muslim extremists take over and they are lining up all the infidels to be beheaded, Blarsen is going to run to the front of the line and say “Hey guys!  It’s me, Blarsen!  I’m one of those who supported you guys all along!  I’m with you!”

I hope I’m there to see them thank him and immediately move him to the front of the execution line.

Agno...Agno...Agno...Second to violating the messageboard posting rule of "no Spelling Nazi's" is the typical desperate response of someone violating the "no fag tag" rule. Both spell desperation and failure and are a defacto ceding of their argument and surrender. Just remember, when you have sunk low enough to violate the two universal messageboard postings rules,

1. No spelling nazi's allowed.

2. No fag tags allowed, even as a hail Mary.

then you have lost, not just to your oppenent but to yourself. N....A....Z...I

The up in ratings was across the board...

The ratings you posted indicate they are the 25-54 demo but actually reflect all viewers of all ages and this was only Wednesday night right before the President's speech. The numbers were 100,000 or so above Gooberrmann's average (the very numbers he fell back to in late Nov and Dec after the election) and O'Reilly's were up about 400,000-600,000. Even Scarborough (after the speech at 10 pm) went into the 1 million mark which is ridiculous. Look for a resumption of the usual numbers of low 600,000 down to mid 500,000 next week by Goobermann which was reflective in the numbers the 5 days before the speech.

P.S. I might give him credit now and then for putting up numbers superior to Nancy Graceless, but then a video of someone vomiting would do the same trick.

If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal.

False premise.   Nobody is

False premise.

Nobody is saying criticism in general of the President is treason...  It depends on the specifics...

This is the basic problem with liberalism - it makes sense in general, but it falls apart when you look at specifics.

Simplified example:  [ Liberal Viewpoint] War is alsways bad because people die in war and dying is a bad thing.

[+ Specifics]  Sometimes war stops evil dictators from killing, so war  causes fewer people to die.

= [Conservative view] War is not always bad, is sometimes good, and is sometimes better than not going to war.

Without the specifics the Liberal view would be correct.  Once specifics are introduced to the equation, the Liberal view becomes ridiculous.

So if people want to disagree with the president's policy, fine - let's see the specifics, let's see the logic, and the reasoning based on the goal of what is best for America and for the world.  But if you're merely going to spew insults, misinformation, hate and lies, you're siding with the enemy because that helps their cause.  Therefore, the charge of treason, or sedition is legitimate.

Question: How do we "see

Question: How do we "seek out and destroy the networks providing advanced weaponry and training to our enemies in Iraq," how do we "address Iran" without eventually invading?

Not sure how many megatons to

Not sure how many megatons to put into my response.

It's called the stinking swea

It's called the stinking sweat of fear on the Mullahs driving them to self preservation of power.  It was in their interest to forment violence in Iraq so the Iranian population would be busy watching the spectacle while they themselves are getting poorer every year.  Now the rules have changed, and they have some choices to make.

I'm not sure that answers m

I'm not sure that answers my question. We scare them into complying?

Legitimate question.  Do you

Legitimate question.  Do you have any suggestions?  Or are you saying that because there are questions and that the answers are difficult that we should do nothing?  I'm not being provocative, I really want to know, because I think there are answers.  I think fear of anihilation can be an excellent motivator.  Cutting off of aid can help, as can giving aid to the enemies of our enemies.

The establishment of strong, stable democracies, who are allied with the Allies, in Afghanistan and Iraq would encourage the younger Iranians who want a more westernized government and society, this, plus the fact that they would be surrounded by democracy, would squeeze Iran into reasonable behavior.

Can it be done?  Maybe, maybe not.

What are the consequenses of doing nothing?

The criticism in this post

The criticism in this post was that Olbermann took Bush's comments as meaning we were going to invade Iran. I'm asking, looking at Bush's comments, what else could he mean? What other ways of achieving those goals?

Military Action in Iran

If it were me, I would send someone to Iran through backchannels (i.e. without the MSM knowing about it) and lay out an invasion plan and what that would exactly mean for their country.  I would make it perfectly clear that the US will not tolerate another holocaust, and that the US will certainly not tolerate a threat against its people or its territory.  You can call it a threat, you can call it a dose of reality, you can call it a preview of what is to come, you can call it whatever the hell you'd like.  What I do know is this - doing nothing will bring us to military action just the same.  I say do it on our terms and limit loss of American lives.

Keep in mind that we are talking about a government who is openly threatening to eliminate the Jews, trying to obtain a nuclear weapon in close proximity to those Jews and our troops in the region, is supporting the Iraqi resistance which is directly resulting in the loss of American lives, and is in the business of supporting terrorism as a whole.

Why is the need to put a military option on the table even being questioned?????

It's a head fake. Bush's real

It's a head fake. Bush's real invasion target is Canada.

Consider the evidence.

1. It's all about oil. And Canada is the already the #1. oil supplier to the U.S. with the 2nd largest reserves in the world.

2. No military to speak of. So they'd fold faster than Mo Dowd under Barrack Osamabama

3. Most of them speak English, so will be better able to follow orders.

Proud member of the all-powerful and vast militarist/industrialist/capitalist/zionist-bagelist complex

One possible interpertation o

One possible interpertation of where the events might lead is invasion, which is the nth degree of pushing the interpretation.  More likely in my estimation the veiled threat was to

1. bomb the crap out of any convoy crossing the border while still in Iran.

2.  actively support an insurgency in Iran, which btw they have already accused the US of doing.

3. bomb military facilities in Iran that are actively supplying weapons or bomb making materials.

4. Same for Syria

5. ... you get the picture?

Balboa

B,

Are you serious? How many times has Bush since his Axis of Evil speech in 2002 addressed Iran? Have we invaded them yet? What is there in the two paragraphs in this speech that differs from what he has said of Iran in the past five years that at all indicates an escalation? Please be specific.

Furthermore, as it pertains to your original post, if I "address" you, does that me I'm going to attack you? ns

Noel

So HOW are we going to "address" Iran then? What will it entail?

just an opinion

Only my opinion, but Iran's in the last stages of its imam-ruled government.

The uprising against those fanatics is coming within DAYS.

Balboa

B,

How have we been addressing them up to this point? We've been trying to get sanctions imposed by the UN, correct? We've been trying to get China and Russia to support such sanctions, yes? You are aware of this?

Furthermore, let's look at the two pivotal sentences:

We will disrupt the attacks on our forces. We will interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria.

This could be achieved at the borders without an invasion, correct? Moreover, do you object to the President wanting to "disrupt the attacks on our forces" and "interrupt the flow of support from Iran and Syria?" Aren't these good goals, Balboa?  ns

Noel

Well, with Bush saying how "we will disrupt the attacks," I assumed he was talking about new tactics, since it doesn't seem like the current ones are stemming the tide of violence in Baghdad, and the whole address was to talk about a change in direction.

Border intervention would work, I imagine. And of course those are good goals.

Balboa, can't you and your li

Balboa, can't you and your liberal politicians answer these questions you are asking?

Maybe you can answer a simple question.

What is the Democrat Plan to deal with Iran, Iraq and N. Korea?  All it seems that you can do is criticize, but not offer alternatives.

Furthermore, it just seems that liberals and Democrats are just asking ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING President Bush proposes.

Harry Reid, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats were asking for more troops in 2004, 2005 and 2006.  Harry Reid claimed to want more troops in Iraq in December of 2006.  Now that the President has suggest and claims that we are going to do this, the Dems are now against it.

Balboa, can you explain your parties position and answer the question.

Noel, just follow the money

Noel, just follow the money. Five years ago, Iran was using (and US banks/laws were tolerating Iran using) US dollars. Now they're being cut-off to the greatest extent possible. Hot air out of the President & other politicains five years ago is one thing, but money is actually-important, and the money-landscape in Iran has changed DRASTICALLY over the past 5 years, which -- for better or worse -- probably means we're closer to war with Iran. If cutting off all use of fiat dollars (among other forms of 'money') isn't an escalation whether or not Bush yakked about it, I'm not sure what is...

sarc

sarc.. I think you're on to something. I cut my daughter's allowance off last week - and she called it an all out escalation. (;>

Sarc

J,

Hasn't Iran answered such financial machinations by moving funds into euros and gold, both of which are higher in value than the dollar was in 2001? As such, whatever financial spanking done by America to Iran that has forced their departure from dollars has likely been beneficial for the Muslim nation, no? Furthermore, the declining dollar has had a reverse impact on oil, correct?

As such, Iran has benefited mightily from these fluctuations in dollar and commodities values in the past six years. You as a gold bull and a dollar bear should know this better than most!  :-)   ns

The Iranian move into gold

The Iranian move into gold was actually pre-emptive on Iran's part (and the news media largely failed to notice when it happened) but financial disruptions such as this sudden move from dollars were not welcomed by the relatively-few English-typing internet-enabled Iranians who communicate with me. And you're right, the financial probably didn't hurt as much as their architects would have hoped, but nonetheless, they were escalations.
JMR

Sarc

J,

Yes, but they are escalations that occurred years ago, and likely ended up backfiring for the reasons I already elaborated. I certainly wish someone would have forced me to put all of my non-real estate holdings into gold and euros five years ago! :-) ns

This is all very interesting

This is all very interesting indeed to me...that is why I love NB's...I learn so much from you all...thanks, just wanted to throw in my two cents...for what it's worth...

Thanks for your kind words. I wish I could say more, but I think it's safe for me to assert this allegation, with the understood proviso that I can-not & will-not back it up, due to business/legal considerations which are entirely out of my control, but here goes anyway: Some US sanctions which are ostensibly aimed at hurting the Iranian government actually in sarcasmo-reality-land tend to mostly hurt the antigovernment (anti-current-Iranian-government, that is...) Iranians instead. I truly wish I could say more, but I just deleted a bunch -- probably not enough -- of this comment...

Gooberman the Drama Queen...

I realize that the policy of the MsM is clear:

The mic is to be monopolized by the lefty fanatics at all costs and the only exception to this rule is a weak sister righty that can't hold his or her own against soggy bread. I got it loudly and clearly.

However, are they (the MsM) so desperate to be heard that all they have left are offerings of failed ESPewing SS wanna be Drama Queen like Goobermann? Good lord I thought O'Reilly was a megalomaniac (ane he is) but compared to Goober here, O'Reilly is still an apprentice narcissist. Gooby pretends in his speech that there was a time that he believed the leadership of the President and implies this in his mono-nauseum, but there never was so he can't even tell himself the truth.

Gooberman, you never had confidence in the President so don't posture like you did. Gooberman, you have always found a way to take the dung offerings of fools and make them fertilizer in your imaginative mind for conspiracy theories so don't tell people suddenly it is the President's fault you can't control your impetuous and paranoid personality. Goober, you claim the President lost Congress to the Democrats, you fool the government belongs to the people not the President. You state "he" has lost most of the Iraqis, hey clueless most of the Iraqis, if not all, know where they are and Iraq's economy is booming you moron.

What is madness , Mr.Goobermann, is MSNBC willingly losing any semblance of credibility by allowing a Jackass in a cheap suit named Olbermann to play the role of a serious social and political commentator...but then we know by now the rule: a lib at the mic at all costs. Good day and God speed because luck if for a duck during hunting season.

If you claim to be a conservative, please don't disgrace yourself and conservatism by thinking and arguing like a liberal.

Odd Man Out At It Again

Hey, Odd Man Out, if you know so much about the military, foreign policy, and politics, why don't you run for office? I'm sure the Capitol needs one more liberal idiot to keep the corruption going. You know about how stretched the military is? Have you actually gone over to Iraq and spoken to our troops or do you just get your talking points from Chrissy Sissy? You know as much about how to run a country as I know how to be a "faux" newscaster which you are. Do you actually have a real job because you do nothing the least bit different, you just bitterly vent, vent, vent because your little sportscaster gig didn't work out and this is the only gig the big boys would give you. I find it odd that you know what Al Qaeda will do or think before our government does. Something you want to share, Keith? This is why I don't get my news from sportscasters because well, they're just sportscaster after all.

The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a little longer.  Air Force Motto

Olbermann is the counter to Anne Coulter's right puches. The only difference is that Olbermann hasn't got a freaking clue. His ignorance is mind boggling- it's amazing someone that clueless has made it as long as he has without some terrible accident happening- Hopefully his liscence to drive has been revoked because if he were to get behind the wheel of a car, it would be a weapon of mass destruction with a lunatic at the helms.
