It is very rare that a conservative agrees with anything published by Newsweek. Yet, Robert J. Samuelson wrote an article Wednesday that will likely shock most NewsBusters readers (emphasis mine throughout):
As someone born in late 1945, I say this to the 76 million or so subsequent baby boomers and particularly to Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, our generation's leading politicians: shame on us. We are trying to rob our children and grandchildren, putting the country's future at risk in the process. On one of the great issues of our time, the social and economic costs of our retirement, we have adopted a policy of selfish silence.
Shocking, yes? Think this might go counter to most Newsweek subscribers’ beliefs? Well, sit back and enjoy, ladies and gentlemen, for Robert was just getting warmed up:
As Congress reconvenes, pledges of "fiscal responsibility" abound. Let me boldly predict: on retirement spending, this Congress will do nothing, just as previous Congresses have done nothing. Nancy Pelosi promises to "build a better future for all of America's children." If she were serious, she would back cuts in Social Security and Medicare. President Bush calls "entitlement spending" the central budget problem. If he were serious, he, too, would propose cuts in Social Security and Medicare.
They are not serious, because few Americans—particularly prospective baby-boom retirees—want them to be. There is a consensus against candor, because there is no constituency for candor. It's no secret that the 65-and-over population will double by 2030 (to almost 72 million, or 20 percent of the total population), but hardly anyone wants to face the implications.
Marvelous stuff, although Samuelson is placing too much blame on the baby boomers. After all, we didn’t create this problem; we just inherited it. Furthermore, current retirees weren’t writing their Congressmen back in the first quarter of 2005 strongly supporting Social Security reform. Regardless, Samuelson was very close to the target, and continued to fire on all cylinders:
By comparison, other budget issues, including the notorious earmarks, are trivial. In 2005, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid (the main programs for the elderly) cost $1.034 trillion, twice the amount of defense spending and more than two fifths of the total federal budget. These programs are projected to equal about three quarters of the budget by 2030, if it remains constant as a share of national income.
Preserving present retirement benefits automatically imposes huge costs on the young—costs that are economically unsound and socially unjust. The tax increases required by 2030 could hit 50 percent, if other spending is maintained as a share of national income. Or much of the rest of government (from defense to national parks) would have to be shut down or crippled. Or budget deficits would balloon to quadruple today's level.
Amen, brother. Tell us more:
Social Security and Medicare benefits must be cut to keep down overall costs. Yes, some taxes will be raised and some other spending cut. But much of the adjustment should come from increasing eligibility ages (ultimately to 70) and curbing payments to wealthier retirees. Americans live longer and are healthier. They can work longer and save more for retirement.
Yes we can, Robert. Tell us more:
Next I'll hear that the Social Security and Medicare trust funds, intended to cover future benefits, have been "plundered." Blame Congress and the White House—not us. This is pure fiction.
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are pay-as-you-go programs. Present taxes pay present benefits. In 2005, 86 percent of Social Security payroll taxes went to pay current retiree benefits. True, excess taxes had created a "surplus" in the Social Security trust fund (it hasn't been "plundered") of $1.66 trillion in 2005; but that equaled less than four years' worth of present benefits. More important, Medicare and Medicaid represent three quarters of the projected spending increase for retirees by 2030.
All the misinformation bespeaks political evasion. With his rhetorical skills, Clinton might have raised public understanding. Instead, he lowered it by falsely denouncing the Republicans for attempting to "destroy" Medicare. The first refuge of good Democrats is to accuse the Republicans of conspiring against old folks by trying to dismantle Social Security and Medicare. And Bush's credibility is shot, because he made the problem worse. His Medicare drug benefit increases spending, and though it could have been justified as part of a grand bargain that reduced other benefits, its isolated enactment was a political giveaway.
Amazing. A member of the mainstream media actually refuting the oft-stated canard about Social Security funds being plundered. Not only that, but also indicting politicians for their consistent misinformation concerning entitlement programs. Somebody pinch me. Continue, Robert:
Opportunities for gradual change have been squandered. These public failings are also mirrored privately. I know many bright, politically engaged boomers who can summon vast concern or outrage about global warming, corporate corruption, foreign policy, budget deficits and much more—but somehow, their own Social Security and Medicare benefits rarely come up for discussion or criticism. Older boomers (say, those born by 1955) are the most cynical, hoping their benefits will be grandfathered in when inevitable cuts occur in the future.
Samuelson concluded: “Baby boomers seem eager to ‘reinvent retirement’ in all ways except those that might threaten their pocketbooks.”
Here, I must disagree, and would love to ask Robert why he didn’t reference the President’s 2005 Social Security reform proposals, and the position that many baby boom conservatives took on this issue. After all, organizations such as The Club For Growth, which is comprised of many baby boomers, strongly advocate lowering benefits and raising retirement ages.
However, regardless of these minor differences, Samuelson was right on, and must be commended for stating what few in the drive-by media have the nerve to.
Bravo, Robert.

January 12, 2007 - 01:12 ET by terrigI remember when I started working in 1980 carrying out groceries at Strack & Van Til in Schererville, IN & looking at my FICA tax that was being taken out. I remember thinking "this won't be here when you retire little girl". In my Government class at Andrean my teacher, Mr. Mark Morgan called Social Security a "Ponzi Scheme" and how if he tried to implement a program like that he'd be sitting in Joliet (federal prison). When I was home about 3 years ago (at the Aged P's in FL) I came across a book I had given my father one year by David Brinkley. The first essay was about Social Security and he talked about it not being able to keep the promises that it made. I thought to myself that it must have been written shortly before he died. However, when Iooked at the date it was written in 1981. I think that speaks volumes!

The notion that the government should take our money and then dole out what they want to give us is retarded. Especially when individual #1 that worked extremely hard their entire life and they get the same amount (or less) than individual #2 that never put forth a fraction of the effort individual #1 did. If one fails to plan and save for their future, they shouldn't feel slighted when the government can't/won't support them (even if they did pay into the system.) This is why the government should put an end to social security as we know it and allow citizens to manage their own money.

I like this solution much bet
January 11, 2007 - 19:05 ET by UnsaneI like this solution much better:
Privatize the whole damn thing. Make it so that gradually the Social Security taxes go into retirement accounts people actually personally control.
But I bet you hate that idea, as it can actually make people LESS dependent on government.
Think that's a lame idea? Do some research on what some Galveston County residents managed to do in the early 1980s and see how much retirement they are getting now as opposed to what they would get if they stuck to some transfer payment scheme.
There isn't anyone under 40 who shouldn't be screaming for some sort of privatization of Social Security. (Because they are the ones that will be holding the burining bag.) The status quo would be great if 40 people were paying benefits to one worker, but those days are LONG gone. Demographics dictate that change MUST happen. As it is, I don't care who is in power - I wake up every morning assuming there will be no Social Security for me when I retire.

when the Federal Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program was first enacted the retirement age was 3 years above the average age American live to. Put it back there and we can end this debate"
Well, let's see here... don't have the exact numbers, but I think the "average age Americans live to" is somewhere around 75 or so. I, like most, started working in my teens. By the age of 72, using this formula, I will have been paying into SS for about 55 years... and can expect to collect benefits for 3 years before I assume room temperature. Hmm, what's wrong with THIS picture? And just btw, these numbers would be the same for just about everyone. Boomers, geezers, Gen Xers....everyone.
IMO, this is probably just what was figured when SS was first created: that most people would die before collecting anywhere near what they put in, forget any "return on investment." It's the only way the system can be sustained indefinitely. Any pyramid scheme needs more contributors than beneficiaries. WE screwed it up by living too long.
A gradual, voluntary shift to privatization is the only workable solution. With all the private-investment options available today, SS is a dinosaur that needs put out of our misery.

January 11, 2007 - 18:01 ET by misterbillBush was right again--privatization implemented gradually would help with the SS problem. We could also ask for all the interest on the overages over the years that was lent to other government branches at 2% or lower. But--hey --it's all coming out of the same bucket--you and me. Investing in a 401k or similar works great. I wish I had known about it years before now. I did a rough workup based on my work years. I put 3% of my income as private and used a 5% rate of growth. I would have more income than I get now from SS alone.

The Bush plan resolves actual SS problems. At the same time what difference would implementing privatization make if states implement health care for illegals? All they will have had to work here in the states is 18 months under some crazy freaking loophole- while Americans- LEGAL residents- must work 48 months in order to collect. A sincere and experienced American who can spot racial injustice at a distance. I was already in my 20's during the 1960s civil rights disturbances. Racists always fit a certain patern. HATE rises to the top of their character inevitably. They can't control it. It has caused them to murder good people; to burn down churches and attack children.
Nobody here is that careless. Here it's an undercurrent of hatred. I ought to know, I'm receiving the attacks and the spite. Our resident bigots try hard to cover their tracks. Until they abuse me; then it's vicious. Observe for yourself, terri. Don't take my word for it.

Excuse me??????
January 12, 2007 - 01:00 ET by terrigYes, you're off by a mile Senor. I think if I remember correctly you called yourself an Hispanic American and not an American first about a month or so ago. I don't know where you get off calling me a racist because I am not. I think you have a problem with anyone who disagrees with you and you call us racists. I could care less about you or your family as you once told me not to cry you a river. I think that you need to observe yourself and look at your own behavior. It is poor and it is sad. I think you fancy yourself a some sort of psychologist in pretending to analyze everyone here and your preceived ideas of their motives. You bring it upon yourself with your constant drumbeat of the terrible plight of illegal Mexicans. No one mentions them but you, we all mention that illegal aliens no matter what extraction need to get in line like those who have been waiting for years to come here but do the right thing and have to wait while those who come here illegallly seem to jump to the head of the line. So, Senor I could care less how old you are, if you marched with anyone in the civil rights marches (I doubt you did). Talk about hatred, you're full of it for everyone who disagrees with you. Those who I may disagree with and I always have contentious conversations but no one stoops to calling the other racists or some other name. Yes, your HATE has risen to the top and you have shown yourself for what you are, a pitiful fool.

January 12, 2007 - 18:15 ET by terrigYou are a nasty person. I don't give a fig about you, your religion, your illegal roots, your wife, or anything about you. So, if you think that makes me a person with no class, well Senor, look in the mirror. I have never in my life seen such a hateful person as yourself. If one doesn't agree with you, they are automatically a racist. You do wear your faith on your sleeve. I have spent my entire life as a Catholic and 12 years in Catholic schools. You remind me of the people who go to church daily and then backstab and talk about others as soon as they hit the narthex and are out the door.

January 13, 2007 - 13:13 ET by tumbler_2007Terrig is now beyond the pale. She beats a dead horse here today, with two lies; things impossible for her to substantiate. Why? I guess she hates me.
"If one doesn't agree with you, they are automatically a racist. You do wear your faith on your sleeve."
Just because you don't "agree" with me is no sign you're a racist or a bigot, or even MISTAKEN. You could be absolutely correct, and I could well be wrong. I often preface my statements saying: "Correct me if I'm wrong," and IMHO (my honest opinion). BUT--Having said this, I say you are a racist if:
You repeat your frequent accusations against an ethnic group of being "despicable" and stealing, and destroying our country, changing our precious "culture" etc., And as happened yesterday; disparaging THEIR culture and lying about it, (it "impoverishes them"). These are nothing but RACIST notions. They're mainly expressions of hatred, the separatist hate speech. This is exactly what used to inflame segregationists before the civil rights movement of our 1960s.
We would quickly be chastized and worse, if we tried to say blatantly that an African American destroys our country, is poor or marginalized merely because of his "culture" or steals only because he was born a black man. Hell, no-- we must immediately express PC outrage, if a dumb stand-up buffoon uses the "N" word! Oh, we can't have THAT-- ! So; why are we allowed to demonize the Mexican, indeed his children, on account of his legal status? Isn't it really a legal matter? Why dump on him and his country of origin, and advocate shooting him in cold blood when he dares cross our border? Why? RACISM, more often than not.
As for the "problem" of my Catholic faith, Terri-- Isn't it now apparent, you dislike my speaking of faith because of your personal distaste for any mention of morality? You'd much rather have the option of calling ME Godless. I take away that option, don't I? Well-- LIVE WITH IT, Dear! I have true, sincere and BLESSED faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ. I invoke HIS glory and hold Him out to YOU--and others here; as the example we must emulate and keep. He loved the downtrodden and the unloved. HE held a leper's hand in His own. He died for lepers as well as for me & you. But you want it kept out of our sight?
You ought to hang your head in shame for cutting me for my Catholic faith, since you declare yourself a believer. That's what Satan would do to us. He would curse you for invoking the name of God. You seem to think along those same lines. By telling lies you wear the devil on your sleeve, Terri. Somebody had to tell you. So, I have.

January 12, 2007 - 01:31 ET by misterbillterri, blonde--I have been collecting SS for 8 years. I am still so old fashioned that I believe it will work out. My belief is simple and by some people's standards, corny. It will work out because this is America. We are Americans. We have always made things work. We had one out of four out of work in the big depression. Times were tough, but a Prsident with courage, a Democratic president who took a lot of bad input, put us back together.
So. I know I am repeating myself, and I know some people simply do not understand (or care), but the danger is from within. We do not have unlimited resources. We cannot provide for the entire world and we are not cruel to take care of Americans first. We cannot allow our country to be weakened by liberal thought that says we are the world's military, job, health or food provider. We must take care of our own first and then help others. A strong America will provide strong citizens who can help others.

On the money Terri. We need to be sure our kids are first. We need to grow strong and dedicated Americans. The issue is that we elect politicians on what they tell us about themselves. Often we do not know enough about them so we pick one or two things that look like they are in tune with our feelings. I live in Georgia. If you check the track record of my Senators you will see why I am proud of them.
A small thing we can do is to email our Reps and Sens with our thoughts. I do quite a bit of it. I then see what kind of response I get and keep forming my opinions on them from the reactions. For example Cong Tom Price sent me an email saying that he was in agreement that we should have better control over embedded reporters with the troops, He said he is speaking up about it and trying to get changes.
I have sent emails that simply compliment them when they do something I think is good for America.
Try it.

January 11, 2007 - 20:06 ET by FastEdNoel, we spoke of this some time ago. 'tis true, us boomers have helped with the problem, incorporating some of the "me" gens psyche. And, because our parents, erroneously called the greatest generation, wanted us to have everything they didn't. Hence, we became, not only part of the problem, but we helped it along, becasue we were entitled to get something back.
However, some of us want to break the cycle - and Samuelson is right - let US decide about our own future. I'd like tohave the money that I'VE put into SS, and let ME invest it. Even if I were to get only 5%, that would be more then the projected SS bennies.
I know that it would be a hard nut to crack, but I want to be responsible for ME, without dependence on the gov. Me thinks I'm sounding like sarc, well, so be it. This guy was taught by a guy from the "greatest" generation to personally responsible. I decide to be safe in my future, and if not, who's the dummy? Me, or the dopes who want to take care of me, just becasue I wasn't "smart" enough to care about myself?

I'm 45 years old at the moment, and I've paid a LOT into a SS system I've never believed-in, but this guy's right -- if a bit late to the fiscally-sensible party. Of course, Dave Barry was saying this kind of stuff in 1994 (when he also gave excellent but ignored advice on Iraq to Bush1 which applied to Clinton & then to Bush2 just as well, but saying that upsets people here because taking Dave's advice would have saved so much money & so many soldiers' lives...).

January 12, 2007 - 05:45 ET by sarcasmoI'll even excerpt the 2 parts I referenced (although the entire thing is worth-reading and rings true after more-than-a-decade). First, Dave said:
I don't think the press has done a very good job dealing with government spending. The Defense Department with the $9,500 toilet seat, that' s not the problem anymore. Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security are the problem. That's us. That's our generation. There the press never says a word.
We certainly never require politicians to ever address those issues except really briefly sometimes during the New Hampshire primary, and then everybody falls asleep.
Amen, Dave, sounds like what Samuelson just-finally-discovered -- and then, in response to this:
One of the planks in your presidential campaign is the Department of Two Guys Named Victor.
Barry:: This is one of those times I wasn't kidding. At the time, we were mad at Moammar Gadhafi, which resulted in us bombing all over Libya and killing a bunch of people, but not him. Then Ronald Reagan gets up and says we're not trying to kill him, we're just dropping bombs. You can kill all the Libyans you want, but legally you can't try to kill the leader.
The other one was Manuel Noriega. Here we have a problem with just one person, and we send all these troops down to deal with it. All these people get killed and hurt, but not Noriega.
So instead of messing around with armies, get a couple of guys named Victor. The president meets with them and has breakfast, or he goes to dinner with them at the restaurant of their choice, and suggests that he's having a problem. Then the next thing you know, you read in the paper that Saddam Hussein has suffered an unfortunate shaving accident resulting in the loss of his head. We don't involve a lot of 22-year-old kids in this dispute between George Bush and Saddam Hussein.
Nobody here liked it the last time I admitted it for y'all, but this is what's known as damn good military advice, which is why the interview reads so well after more than a decade on the shelf.

January 11, 2007 - 20:50 ET by saw the lightNoel, you must use all your contacts to get Mr. Samuelson into protective custody. When the editors of the New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today read his article, they surely will recognize the need to silence him. I'm sure they will feel the need to prevent this type of logical, sensical, truthful type of thinking from being spread to other media types.
I agree with many posters that I feel I can invest my benefits much more effectively than the government. I already am planning on life without Social Security because I'm sure it will not be there when I hit their retirement age. January 12, 2007 - 12:25 ET by UnsaneIf you listen to the right people, and even some on this website, the construction of I-69 represents the greatest danger to this republic and it's Constitution, even more so than al-Qaeda. They call it the "NAFTA Superhighway" and see it as the centerpiece of an evil conspiracy that will force Canada and Mexico to join the United States (never mind that NO Canadian or Mexican will ever go for it on the basis of history and culture).
Pat Buchanan is a major alarmist in this regard, but he is an indicator that these alarmists can't even agree where this evil "NAFTA Superhighway" will be. He says it's I-35. Others on here say it is I-69.
I'll do some research and get back to you. I am sure than on the back of the shields with the route numbers, there are some dots that are really indicators for the black helicopters to follow...
(OK, in all seriousness...just build the damn highway. If you are hoping and praying for all highways in America to be "de-linked" from Canadian and Mexican ones, you are WAY too late, as my drive to AK demonstrated years ago. Besides, I suspect the majority of people who believe it is part of some evil conspiracy are closet protectionists who will say and do ANYTHING to destroy free trade.)

January 11, 2007 - 21:33 ET by acaiguanaWell, ghotifun - not really a Ponzi or Pyramid.
It looks that way, but it really is an income tax. The revenues are spent just like income taxes. When the tax and spenders (that would be Democrats) talk about it going broke they are perpetuating the false idea that SS is somehow or other self-sufficient and separate from the general fund of tax revenues.
Of course, many years ago, they started spending it like a general revenue stream which made it a simple Income Tax. This is for sure immoral and hides from the people what this tax is all about. Whether it is illegal, I don't know if it has been challenged in courts.
Since Pelosi and Reid can retroactively file amended expense reports (and Clinton and others) I suppose they would just retroactively declare it an Income Tax if they were told they couldn't continue to call it a 'premium' or what ever they call it.
So, you are in a lose lose here. Game theory would dictate that you need correct information to make the correct move, but since they lie to you (all of them are lying to you) about this tax;
well...
you're kinda screwed.

I love Blind Monkeys and any inference that I am making fun of Blind Monkey's would be wrong. I am making fun of the government ideology that we should put ourselves in a situation where their largess means our survival.

January 12, 2007 - 00:34 ET by misterbillHad the money been invested in the private sector as many unions and school districts have done, the SS bank would be in much, much better shape. Alas!

Samuelson is full of shit.
January 11, 2007 - 23:55 ET by jdhawkSamuelson is full of shit. He knows damn well that the Dimocrats fully intend to raise additional taxes by simply raising the present Social Security tax against earnings from $90,000 to $200,000. And, like their little AMT plan that has worked out so well for them, we will all be making $200,000 not long from now although it won't be worth spit.
Meanwhile, Samuelson like the good liberal he is, leaves out the President's plan to reform Social Security. Libs "golden rule" never give praise in any form to the opposition party.
The Dims will never fix this entitlement plan ever. It will take the Republicans back in power and a bludgeon to get this stink fixed.
By the way, let's not dignify this "program" any longer as "Social Seurity." Decades ago it stopped giving back what all people put in. It robs from the rich and gives to the poor like all welfare programs.
This is another worthless piece of "journalism" from a rag that is well always a week old. Both Newsweek and Samuelson suck.

Why can't you tell us how you really feel. (I agree with you!)
