Behar Suggests Waterboarding Alleged Holocaust Shooter
Joy Behar apparently has a thing for waterboarding and conservatives. ABC’s “View” co-host interrupted a serious June 11 discussion about hate crimes in America, with talk of, well, more waterboarding. In this case, the suspect in the Holocaust museum shooting.
“You know they say he’s the lone gun man he’s acted alone and everything…but do you think that Cheney should have him waterboarded to see if there’s anybody behind this?” The reaction of the crowd was mostly silence, with a splatter of awkward laughs. After a loaded pause, co-host Elizabeth Hasselback was so taken aback that she quickly said “Here’s what I think should happen – on a more serious note, ’cause I can’t even address that…” It is hard to determine what Behar was trying for – political commentary, humor, or something else, since she did not laugh or smile it off. Instead she just muttered “Just wondering.” This is the second time Behar used waterboarding for kicks on “The View”. The first was in reference to baptism resembling the enhanced interrogation technique. There were few laughs that time, as well.

Ms. Behar has never been one to let the facts get in the way of a chance to take a cheap shot at anyone she disagrees with.

She'll fit right in with the other air heads on HLN: Nancy dis-Grace and Jane Valez Mitchell, neither of whom ever met a tabloid story they didn't go on and on and on about.

Lou Dobbs
June 13, 2009 - 11:55 ET by ChaitealoverDobb's program is on HLN opposite Hannity [6 PM] here in San Diego. As I seldom watch CNN, I didn't realize he was also on that channel at 4 PM until I checked tvguide.com just now. As I'm a hopeless channel surfer, I've probably seen him on both channels without realizing it. So, I assume he's live on CNN at 4 and rerun on HLN at 6 and her show will just replace the rerun.

and um Elizabeth, pls start making certain that you tell the selftorturer about the Nazi=Liberal thing,
I know conservatives get
June 12, 2009 - 11:27 ET by JasonCI know conservatives get aroused by "reminding" others that the Nazi party's full name contained the word "socialist", but the accusation that modern liberalism is aligned with mid-century Nazism doesn't hold up to three seconds of scrutiny.
While the Nazi government did control all means of production and distribution - and I have yet to see a prominent modern liberal suggest that the solution to our current problems would involve complete governmental appropriation - this aspect of Nazism was how it got started. If they had simply reinvigorated Germany after its being quashed in post-WWI global politics by taking over industry and instilling a little national pride, we probably wouldn't associate Nazism with anything negative at all. In other words, the party's liberally-defined behavior is not what made them evil. It was the abuse of power that emerged from governmental appropriation that led to hyper-nationalist zeal, xenophobia, and the invasion of sovereign nations.
Now, I am not one to call conservatives Nazis either. And I think that blaming this shooting on conservative commentators, repugnant as they generally are, is ridiculous. We're talking about an 88-year-old veteran with deep-seated issues of bigotry. I find it hard to believe that he got the idea to do this from Hannity's American or the Head Dittohead. It's just not plausible.
Nonetheless, it's only fair to point out that the Nazi's actions - the ones which we define as atrocities - have their correlation in conservative politics. I am not claiming that "conservatives are Nazis" - only shallow idiots say such things. Nor am I claiming that Nazism was oriented to the left or right as we know it today because the handy little liberal/conservative bifurcation that the vapid chatter which passes for political discourse now is not analogous to that of Europe in the late 1930s.
So if you want to imply that liberalism - and of course Obama - displays Nazi-ish tendencies, go right ahead. But until it calls for the invasion of sovereign countries, eradication of people of a certain religion/sexuality/ethnic background &c., and the creation of concentration camps, the comparison is pathetically disingenuous.
jasonC,
June 12, 2009 - 11:39 ET by AgnosticYou have made a decent attempt at describing why the Nazism can not be applied to the liberals of today but the truth is that Nazism was a socialist program that concentrated its power in the hands of the government. The attributes you describe "hyper-nationalist zeal" & "xenophobia" are as easily described in many other governments, namely: Communist China, Stalinist Russia and to a certain degree Pre-WWII America along with many others. It is too simple to use Nazism as an insult but the characteristics that made up Nazism aren't necessarily signs of Nazism. The socialistic nature of Nazism is real however and so is the fact that state power leads to the economic inefficiencies that create dictatorships.

Agreed, but it is often the claim of the right that socialistic tendencies will inevitably lead to fascism; just as it is often the claim of the left that nationalism, overt patriotism, and pre-emptive invasions of other countries automatically mean the gov't in question is fascist.
except that nationalism,
June 12, 2009 - 11:55 ET by TruthMongerexcept that nationalism, overt patriotism, and pre-emtive invasions have only been dangerous in the hands of government socialists - the right knows this - the left does not - and apparently never will no matter how many hitlers or obamas we have
