Over at TVBytheNumbers.com, we see that CNN has come in third to FoxNews and MSNBC respectively for weekday primetime ratings during the second quarter of this year. This is the first time that MSNBC has come out ahead of CNN ever.
Unfortunately for those of us wishing for a well informed public, it is the Keith Olbermann show that is driving MSNBC's ratings gain over CNN. Apparently Americans are desperately in need of comedy since last January.
It looks as though this is an MSNBC press release, so that would be why FoxNews is not mentioned. No surprise, though, because Fox outperforms both CNN and MSNBC by leaps and bounds. Still it is interesting that CNN is falling behind here for the first time.
NEW YORK – June 30, 2009 – For the first time ever, MSNBC notched a quarterly victory over CNN in weekday primetime for 2Q09 in both total viewers and Adults 25-54, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. MSNBC was also the number one cable news network among younger viewers, Adults 18-34, in primetime in second quarter. For 2Q09, MSNBC also beat CNN at 8 p.m. among both total viewers and A25-54 with “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.” Following are MSNBC ratings highlights for 2Q09:
For the first time ever, MSNBC beat CNN in weekday primetime for 2Q09 (M-F, 8-11 p.m. ET) in total viewers (946,000 vs. 939,000) and among Adults 25-54 (289,000 vs. 261,000). MSNBC is up 18 percent in total viewers vs. 2Q08 (946,000 vs. 801,000) while CNN is down -10 percent.
Additionally, in M-S Primetime, MSNBC beat CNN for the quarter among A25-54 (264,000 vs. 240,000).
Yes, it is interesting news, in any case.
**Update**
And in case there was any doubt, FoxNews Dominates:
Coming off the heavy political season, Fox News also maintained its winning ways -- rocketing up 34% to 2.1 million viewers in prime time, coming in right behind Disney Channel for fourth place. Other demos also had strong results -- including 18-49 viewers, which climbed 41% to 376,000.

If you want the lefty audience, you have to be a drooling, screaming, imbecile of a hater... possibly, but not necessarily with leg tingles.
...And Cafferty, for all his bloviating nitwitticism is just no Olbermann.
CNN - Fake stories and Cheap Liberal News is last place.
July 1, 2009 - 06:51 ET by acaiguanaIt says a lot when the Liberal audience flees CNN to listen to MSNBC. I guess MSNBC's strategy of hate for Conservatives and fawning love of Liberals is working out for them.
In a righteous struggle for last place, this is indeed a banner day for MSNBC and Olbermann's particular brand of hate.
Gee, Warner, this is exciting <sarc>. Maybe they will both struggle in this epic battle for what seems to me to be about 50,000 viewers all the way to oblivion.
What were the FOX numbers? That would have been interesting to see alongside these two losers.
I quit CNN when they had the blowhard reporting on the first Iraqi War. Can't remember his name this morning so I guess that sorta says it all. He got fired over the Laos story which falsely presented the US military as having used poisonous gas against villagers.
For that story I have waited these many years to see CNN disgraced in the airways. Now I am seeing it happen and what was once a great idea and the first real International News Network has indeed fallen on hard times.
Couldn't happen to a better bunch of folks.

"What were the FOX numbers?" you asked.
July 1, 2009 - 08:12 ET by Red JeepWhat were the numbers for the History Channel, A&E, the Food Channel, etc? Probably as big or bigger than any of the cable "news" shows.
I agree CNN and MSNBC must be on their way to oblivion. I wonder how they still have advertisers paying big bucks. With 300 million+ people in this country you would think the cable news channels would get bigger audience numbers just from chance, just from people turning on their 600 mill+ TVs.

My my
July 1, 2009 - 06:52 ET by 10ksnookerIt's been a really rough ride for CNN.
But don't fret too much, if you have ever been in an international airport then you know that CNN is an American hating organization to the core.
What this means is that
July 1, 2009 - 07:07 ET by MidAmericaWhat this means is that the lefties are getting worried and the relatively benign obama press releases from CNN are not enough to keep the lefties cheered up so they have turned to the Baghdad Bob of liberal news.
Not dead yet
July 1, 2009 - 08:45 ET by slickwillie2001CNN has tremendous potential that could be achieved with proper management. They have a premium brand and a worldwide organization. They need to get back to hard news and away from opinion. Someone needs to go through their offices with a scythe, and clean house. At this point the staff of no-names that read the news updates on the half-hour could take over and do better than the big names. Anderson and Cafferty need to go. Blitzer and Dobbs might be among the few I would keep.
Their problem is that they look at Fox News' success, and want to copy it. But Fox is the only news channel with a conservative slant; they have a monopoly in that regard. If CNN wants to copy that m/o with a liberal slant, it means that in their case they have to compete with ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBC/PBS/NPR and they can't do that. The market for liberal-slant news is saturated.
Hard and balanced news professionally delivered like CNN did it fifteen years ago would win against many Fox News opinion shows with perhaps the exception of BOR. No spin, no 'value judgements', no interpretation, no 'flavor', just news.
Put on your safety goggles
July 1, 2009 - 09:19 ET by needleI think what you are saying is essentially that CNN had better kick the Kool-Aid habit.
Good advice; there is just one problem: As with every 12 step program, the FIRST step is a frank self-critical admission that you have a [serious] problem. As the rest of this post implies, Kool-Aid is just as addictive as other drugs; and with serious bad habits, taking that first step generally occurs, if ever, only after things have become VERY bad indeed.
My bet is that CNN will up the dosage. If by doing this they succeed in overtaking MSNBC, we are going to be in for quite a spectacle.
- Relying upon the MSM for your information is like relying upon an embezzler to manage your portfolio.
This is fantastic news. As
July 1, 2009 - 08:50 ET by flyingmonkeyThis is fantastic news. As things get worse, the rabid liberal left is flocking to MSNBC for false reassurance while the independents are going elsewhere (FNC) for the truth.
Were the combined numbers of MSNBC and CNN greater or less than they were last quarter? If they were less, this would mean a shift to more conservative news coverage. I too would love to see FNC's numbers.
I believe that the average Joe has become generally distrustful of the MSM. What's being reported by the MSM is not being reflected by what's actually happening in this country. People are catching on.
FNC vs USA Network
July 1, 2009 - 09:20 ET by slickwillie2001To answer the question FNC vs the non-news cable shows, right now only the USA Network leads Fox News, but by a considerable margin. When football season starts however, Fox News is likely to be pushed down to third place.

July 1, 2009 - 09:39 ET by hbestDon't know if it is good news that MSNBC beat CNN. If its Olbermann driving it, that can't be good news. Though, at least it concentrates all of "them" in one place.
Sadly, we have the "comedian" at 8 PM on MSNBC and now that other "comedian" in the US Senate. There are times I am glad that my father is not on this Earth to see this.

July 1, 2009 - 12:30 ET by SickofLibsDisregarding the unlikable on-air personalities, the other thing really annoying with CNN is that virtually every story is headlined BREAKING NEWS.
I just saw Jacko's will being described as breaking news.

So, Entertainment trumps Newsworthiness. This comment seems to compare Fox to Disney...I'd change it to reflect Fox kickin' all other News broadcasts instead of being behind Kids Entertainment. Should Fox step it up and try to appeal to more kids? Just saying...

ALSO, I will be investigating this...but on their political ticker blog count the number of Sanfrod posts released then count the number of Spitzer posts released. There are over 30 articles on Sanford. (Note: I think Sanford should resign...but I still want to point out the bias on CNN)
