On D-Day Anniversary, Google Memorializes... Tetris?

  • Bookmark and Share

On June 6, 1944, the crucial Normandy Landings that formed the spearhead of the Allied invasion of Nazi held Europe occurred. D-Day ultimately led to the victory of the Allies over the despotic Nazi regime. Now here we are on June 6, 2009 and, in its inimitable way, Google has decided to memorialize the important occasion by adding an image on its homepage depicting... the computer game Tetris.

Yes, it's far more important to Google to celebrate the anniversary of the invention of the video game Tetris than to memorialize D-Day. It just warms the heart, doesn't it?

I have to say, though, that this is no departure for Google, a firm that finds it nearly impossible to post images celebrating any American holidays or important milestones in American history. So, what we have here is just one more example of Google's essentially anti-American policies.

WTH

Well at least this year we didn't get a Kraut helmet.

(And for the leftards, I'm half Kraut myself, so bugger off).

I hope he fails, too.

Hahah, Blondie!

Just wait until you see the Google logo for Little Big Horn later this month.

h/t to the Shrubbster

I missed that the first time through, silly me.  I should have known, though.

I hope he fails, too.

Good to see you back. I am

Good to see you back. I am about 2/3rds Kraut. I am proud of that German heritage just as I am of my southern heritage.

Hey Rick

Mucho gracias on the welcome back.

Zwei bier, bitte....to go along with whatever sporting events (oops, WTH is going to have a fit on his thread) are happening today...I read Roger Penske is buying Saturn.

I hope he fails, too.

Penske

They are working on the deal now. He lost one of his Dodge dealships in MI. Seem good ole Roger  has given money to Republicans.

You ought to feel good. The Gator baseball team are in the super regionals in the college world series and the lady Gators are the softball world series

More than half here... w/ a name like Huber it's got to be

Kraut.  You are spot on!  How asinine... A Kraut helmit!  Google is such a bunch of morons when it comes to honoring the true heroes.

BTW...  Cuil is a search engine run by some techies who left google and started their own.  At first it was nothing to boast about except more results than google, but now they have got it to a point where relevent results come to the top.  Give it a shot I think its much better than Yahoo or the others....  at least equal to google.

www.cuil.com

It is lean, clean interface w/ relevent hits like googles.  The best part is they are not spying for China against China's citizens.

just want to urge caution

just want to urge caution before you equate anti americanism with liberalism.  I am a liberal, lefty, what ever you want to call me, and I spent yesterday thanking D Day participants, and enjoying my freedom thanks to them.  I think it is absurd that tetris got the Goodle honor (is there any official statement as to why?) But, again, in a site that is supposed to note liberal bias, i am a bit offended by this inclusion. And good god am I happy that we won WWII!

You caution and are offended?

Too bad.   You want to know why Tetris got today's "Google honor"?  Hint....write them yourself and ask.  Google has a nice long history of this kind of stuff.

Memorial Day 2006....nada

Memorial Day 2007....nada

Memorial Day 2008...a yellow ribbon?

As for your self-congratulations, I'd expect no less from a self-proclaimed lefty.

how in the world did i self

how in the world did i self congratulate?  did you not spend yesterday reflecting on those who fought for you?  to say so outloud and to share your feelings is somehow self congratulatory?  and if a liberal did nothing he would be a country hater, and if he said he respected the day he is self congradulatory?  as a 'troll', i try really hard to not insult when i comment, but jeez, some of your minds are warped.

Actually...

Today is the 65th anniversary, not yesterday, can't you self-proclaimed leftists get anything right?  Let me help you out, the invasion of Normandy was originally scheduled for June 5, 1944, but had to be postponed for a day due to bad weather.

So I am spending my day with my mother, who shared with me her rememberances of D-Day, hearing the announcement over the loud speakers of the D-Day invasion, while she worked at Wright Aeronautical, a defense contractor.  And I also said thank you to my step-dad, who flew B-17's during The War.  The rest of what I've done and how I've commemorated this historic day is none of your business.

As for your self-congratulations, what do you want, a medal (or perhaps a Google yellow ribbon) for pondering those who afforded you the freedom you enjoy?

For your information, I didn't call you a troll....but since you seem to self-identify as one of those as well, let me give you another hint.  Don't say you don't insult someone, and then insult them in the same bloody sentence!

as a 'troll', i try really hard to not insult when i comment, but jeez, some of your minds are warped.

ct, well maybe you do not

ct, well maybe you do not share in many of the leftist ideology against our troops, but you must concede that many seem to choose when and where they will support them.

While I applaud your honoring those of WWII may I ask if you do the same for all veterans of all of our wars?  eg., VNam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan...

"....how in the world did i

"....how in the world did i self congratulate?..."

Everyone has their own opinion, but in mine, you didn't at all.

Not a trick question.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, (which is a pretty silly thread anyways), and since you are a self admitted liberal, let me ask you a question.

In your opinion, what is the highest marginal tax rate that someone should be paying to the Federal Government?

I'll give you my answer to show you I'm not trying to ambush you.  I think it should be 25%, and that's a flat 25% with no deductions or anything like that.

Thanks in advance.

i think first trimester abortion is a personal decision that i would never try to make for someone else.  Don't mind immigration...heck, my grand folks were immigrants at one point, and i find immigrants to be some of the hardest working folks in philadelphia. Dont think Islam is inherently evil at all.  I think Palestinians have been getting the shaft for the better part of a century.  I love nature and would like to see it as clean as possible (i.e. from time to time I recyle...does this make me a crazy eco nut?) drill baby drill seems like an incredibly short sighted strategy, i appreciate book smarts and people who can talk intelecutally, OH, MOST IMPORTANT i really really really hate the violence that has sunk our inner cities, and if i could make one law it would be to take all the NON HUNTING guns off the street immiediatly so that people would stop shooting people!!!!  thats how it works in europe, where people do hunt, and you know what? AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE TO LAUGH AT EUROPE, THEY MANAGE TO GET THROUGH THE DAY WITHOUT SHOOTING EACH OTHER DEAD IN THE STREETS.

Crash

Excellent sentiment.

And shame on Nicolas Sarkozy for not inviting the only remaining head of state to have served to the commemoration today...Queen Elizabeth, and her consort Prince Phillip, who also served.

It's embarrassing to have Obama represent us today, if he apologizes or even hints at an apology, he deserves to be impeached.

<edit> Methinks crash edited his post as I was replying....it is not what it was.

I hope he fails, too.

Blanket Apology

Since Obama has been elevated to a god, I'm predicting that he will issue some sort of simultaneous apology and statement of forgiveness for the whole human race.

(And notice the lower case "g", denoting a false god.)

Hi Blonde

It's embarrassing to have Obama represent us today, if he apologizes or even hints at an apology, he deserves to be impeached.

Amen.

I poured my coffee this morning sat down and turned on Fox, and there he (hussein) was yet again this morning.  I HAD to turn the channel.  The only reason he is there is a photo op. He ran a phony campaign, and he is still a phony!

Agreed Moonstruck

Both he and Sarkozky are in it for the photo op, nothing more.   So, I shall not turn on the news today, thank you very much for the suggestion.

I hope he fails, too.

Hey Blondie,

Well I’m off, I’m going to go sailing. I’m going to put my flag that I hung up in the window of my bar in Hoboken, NJ after 9/11, up the rigging and fly it all day long. I only pull it out on certain days. This is one of them.

Hope all is well with you, have a good one.

I thought of your friend John when I read this post this a.m.

Enjoy your sail....and thanks for the image of your American flag proudly flying on this day...much more suitable than The One at Point du Hoc.

Ugh, he is at Pointe du

Ugh, he is at Pointe du Hoc? Bet he's only there to try and draw favorable comparisons to Reagan.

No contest, though -  he's trying to draw a comparison to one of the three or four greatest speeches by on of the two or three greatest orators we've had.

"And behind me is a memorial that symbolizes the Ranger daggers that were
thrust into the top of these cliffs. And before me are the men who put
them there. These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the
cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. And these
are the heroes who helped end a war."

Here it is....

Reagan at Pointe du Hoc

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

Thanks MB

While following the link on Drudge to Brown's really big gaffe (Obama Beach!!!!)....I found the full video of Reagan's D-Day speech...eat your heart out, fakir Obama.

I hope he fails, too.

Do you know what pisses me

Do you know what pisses me off, when I watch our President and his wife laughing and joking while they are at Point de Hoc?

This is a memorial for the men who bravely fought and died to liberate Europe, not some final 16-basketball game.

I can’t print just how much I loathe these people, their views, their lack of respect, just yards from where Michelle and Barrack are smiling and patting people on the back is where men died giving their all.

Maybe they should take a longwalk through the cemetery near there, and see if they are smiling then. My Grandfathers best friend is there, he was standing in front of my Grandfather when the ramp dropped, he died before ever hitting the beach.

Its some big-ass photo shoot to them.

I personally would like to extend my deepest and most heart felt thanks, and un-payable debt to our military. God bless each and every one of you..

Michelle

I am not going to comment on Michelles choose of wardrobe other to say it looks more like something you'd wear to a summer wedding. I was more concerned about the smirk on her face. She gave me the impression she doesn't want to there. She can't want until it is over  so her a BHO can have their date in Paris tonight.

My uncle went ashore on

My uncle went ashore on D-Day plus 4. He fought his way through Belguim. He was the closet relative I had there. A good friend of mine, he is still living, was a captain of a company of engineers that hit the beach that dh. He doesn't talk about except to remember those that died.

Thank you to the ones that were there that day.

Ricktal, My Grandfather

Ricktal,

My Grandfather almost never talked about it as well except for the good times, like when they took over someone’shouse and found a load of Snaps in the basement, he use to tell me that just smelling it would make him sick after.

Rick

I saw "Saving Private Ryan" with one of my dear friends, whom I've known since we were teens.  The openening scenes of the D-Day invasion left her in tears...her beloved father was there (I believe he was a Ranger) on that Longest Day.  He never spoke of it either, except to acknowledge he was there.  So here's to the memory of Dr. K, and all of the men who were there that day, and my gratitude for all who fought and continue to do so to keep us free and safe.

I hope he fails, too.

Bing Has a Clue

Well, Microsoft apparently has a clue with its new search engine www.bing.com - It has a multiple links to D-Day activities and a nice full screen picture of one of the beaches.

And...

And isn't that a beautiful image, too?

Hard to believe that such beauty once played host to such ugliness.

I was thinking something

I was thinking something along the same lines. Then, I was wondering which beach that was part of.

BING

Thanks for mentioning BING.  I've been trying to find an alternative to google for a while.  I heard about BING on CNBC the other day, but your link gave me the impetus to try it.  I'm going to go with it for a bit and hopefully it will replace google for my search needs.

History Channel

And how about the History Channel running a MASH marathon this morning on D-Day? The writers and actors on that show would have gone AWOL long before the first landing craft left the dock on D-Day. What ever happened to the "History" part of the History Channel, anyway???

The guy who wrote the book

The guy who wrote the book the movie and show are based off of had a few dozen fits every time he thought about the direction they had taken his show.

I notice two things missing

I notice two things missing today on tv: no airings of either "The Longest Day" OR "Saving Private Ryan".

WTF?

I also do not equate Google's douchey action as anti-American, since thousands of Brits and Canucks were injured or died on those beaches in Normandy. It is more a statement of liberalism's aversion to act of herosim in the name of freedom.

I guess I will have to wait until some other day to see my man Sean...

  And that's why I have

And that's why I have Saving Private Ryan on D.V.D. Networks seem to run it on every day except those on which an airing would make sense.

D-Day

Since I'm such a news junkie, but can't bear to see the Bamster in Normandy...I took a gander at the UK Daily Mail (some fabulous pictures and great info, also links to other coverage).

Seems Prince Charles managed to wangle an invitation (I'm still steamed about the insult to the Queen).

And I found THIS....something about which I'd never heard...."The Great Panjandrum"....another of those ingenious Brit inventions (like the dam busting bomb).  Interestingly, when I read this article, it was invented by Nevil Shute, writer of On The Beach (both versions were aired this week...the 2000 remake was rather enjoyable, interestingly enough).  I've never read Shute, but I think I will after making this discovery.

Another very interesting film (and the true story behind it) from WII is The Dam Busters.

I hope he fails, too.

Evil

Google is Evil. The sooner they have some serious competition, the better. If a search engine was launched that guaranteed political neutrality, I believe that would help them succeed against Google. Bing? Don't know who's more evil.

PS What will the Bamster spell out with the rocks on Normandy Beach?

I think the bigger news

I think the bigger news story is that anyone is even surprised.

One of the biggest events in world history is ignored by Google while they celebrate "Tetris."

The best way to combat this

The best way to combat this is to switch to Bing. I just made Bing my home page. Look at their front page today. See if it makes more sense to use it.

Is Google trying to become

Is Google trying to become the official State search engine?

Perhaps their CEO is vying for the search engine Czar position?

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

How would putting up a

How would putting up a Tetris logo be part of a plan to beomce the "official State search engine"?

Because they routinely

Because they routinely ignore American patriotic days like Memorial Day (well, except for the dinky little yellow ribbon that basically means they don't want our GIs 'over there') and ignore Christmas as a holiday, etc.

That given the Communist nature of the current regime in Washington along with the plethora of 'czars' being appointed by Dear Leader I'd think it was pretty obvious...the idea that Google is run by like-minded, Commie, secular-progressive individuals is pretty much a given around here.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

The bigger the government ... the harder WE fall.

Isn't that what google did for China with their nanny/spy software?

Featured link on a Google Search page

I happened to look at Google's Image Search page.  There's not much there but a search box, but they did manage to include a link for those who want to participate in the Obama Time Capsule project.  If your curious about it, get your barf bag and go here.

Nothing to complain about?

You see, you have a problem with your logic. Inherent in the phrase "private company they can do what they want" is the opposite truth that we are private people and can SAY what we want about what they do.

So, YES, we have every right to complain about them.
