NYT Sees 'Obama's Face' Everywhere, and is Loving it

In another nearly orgasmic tribute to The One, in its Arts section The New York Times published a May 30 story buoyantly jubilant over the fact that Obama's face "rules the web." The story is in glee over how the Obammessiah's portrait fills the web and that some folks are even making a bit of cash off the deal.

To my mind, though, the amusing thing about the piece is that, if read closely, it appears that only schlocky Obama art can bring any sales as any serious artistic efforts are going unsold. I don’t know what that says about Obama art aficionados, but there you have it. Obama schlock rules.

The first Obamanist cum arteeste the piece reveals to us is one Mimi Torchia Boothby of Seattle who was so inspired by The One that she painted a "contemplative, sun-splashed portrait" of Obama that she is now selling on the web. And she was excited that a whole 24 takers was dredged up.

Sadly, there is no sense of proportion about this whole phenomenon and there just is no real effort to place this phenomenon in any historical perspective. Obama is ranked with John F. Kennedy in the excitement for his portrait but, there is no sense that the Times understands that Kennedy's portrait didn't become ubiquitous until his assassination. Yes there were many portraits of him just after he got elected, but his assassination spurred that displaying of his image a lot more than his mere election. On the other hand, Obama's portrait is everywhere despite his relative lack of accomplishment as president.

There is no discussion of other presidents that enjoyed popularity in portraiture. George Washington was hugely popular for generations of Americans including those first American voters of the late 1700s. Just about every American had a portrait of Washington somewhere. Abraham Lincoln was also everywhere in his day and after and was one of the most photographed president's of his era and on into the next. Teddy Roosevelt was the people's president and found great popularity as a subject of portraits. Original images of Teddy are still easy to find on ebay or in antique stores. In his turn, Franklin Roosevelt's image became popular everywhere, as well. But does the Times talk of any of this? Nope.

Finally, one might think that a thoughtful piece on the widespread appearance of Obama's portrait might include some words of caution, some perspective, or some effort to look deeper into the matter. But, I guess that is far too introspective for the Times, sadly. No effort was made to make this piece a serious treatment of the matter.

What does it say, for instance, about people so taken by this man even though he has yet to actually achieve any major effort (shy of getting elected, no mean feat, to be sure), has not faced any significant challenge or emergency, and has yet to be proven to have succeeded in his goals?

But, let’s not worry about reality, shall we? Unfortunately, it's all about the slavish sycophancy for The One as opposed to any serious treatment of the subject.

Sigh.

Wait a minute....

Newsbuster's is the worst about posting the image of "the One"...everytime I look at NB it's got his picture spread all over the place...I'm sick of seeing him and I'd like it to start with NB, how 'bout a moritorium on pix of His Holiness" for 3 months??

Pleeeeeeeease?

There is a difference

There is a difference between posting photos of Obama with a story about him and just posting photos.

I think what WTH is referring to is the deluge of "artistic" portrayals of him, such as the ubiquitious halo photos during the campaign (one of which is pictured here), and the continued hagiographical stylings ad nauseam.

BTW, over the weekend while shopping with my daughter, we saw several varietes of Obama T-shirts on clearance racks in various stored.

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

obama gone

I agree with the 1st comment

I find it interesting that

I find it interesting that the 2 groups that support Obama the most rabidly are the false intelligentia and the unwashed. How does Peggy Noonan reconcile that with her self image of superiority. Or Babs Streisand? Cover of Time and Black Velvet paintings generall don't share the same subject.

The NYT Arts section is bilge.

The NYT Arts section is bilge. We will all be seeing less and less of the NYT soon, and loving it!

can we please keep the

can we please keep the sexual refrences to a minimum? its kind of trashy

Oh, and if read closely

this is not a sentence...in fact, its not really close.

"To my mind, though, the amusing thing about the piece is that, if read
closely, it appears that only schlocky Obama art can bring any sales
for any serious artistic efforts are going unsold."

i think if you change "for"

i think if you change "for" to "as", the sentence would read much better

OKOKOKOKOK

Sheese.

But, I agree with your "for" to "as" suggestion. Thanks for it.

How about a comma after

How about a comma after "sales"?  And maybe "since" instead of "for" or "as"?  Then everything would be just perfect.  :-)

Mimi a DUmmie

It turns out that Mimi, the first one mentioned in the story, is a member of the Democrat Underground. She even posted over there boasting about appearing in the NYT. Take a look HERE.

It's the narcissism

The pictures with his nose in the air, his neck at an angle previously thought physiologically impossible, are the worst. Nothing screams 'Narcissist' louder than those. A Republican posing like that would be ridiculed out of office.

I See His Face

. . . every time I close my eyes and think about our nation's enemies gleefully rubbing their hands together, or think about the economic "Reichstag Fire" precipitated by the media to help get him elected, and then thinking about the lives this tactic ruined (except of course for George Soro's).

I see his face when contemplating the slavery to state and debt that he and his followers have condemned my grandchildren to.

I see his face when I think about the black panthers intemidating voters or about Acorn inventing them.

I see his face when I weep for our fallen nation which is being trampled under the heal of a government which must become more totalitarian to keep power, as all socialist governments have in the past.

I see his face when I think about evil, and I can not find a way to get his face out of my mind while so much evil is being heaped upon Liberty's shoulders.

But if there is a God of economic justice I will live long enough to never see the New York Times again.

Only the mustache....

is missing... Maybe the blue arm band with a nice "O" is coming soon?  Or with the word "Hope" on it?  Yeah, hope we don't have to go on a nice train ride...

Oh, I would also like to see less of the references to God for Barry.  I once learned that repetition is the mother of skill, or some such line.  Well, I hate to even read anything with Barry being refered to as the one and stuff, over and over.

Can we just call him Barry Hussain, maybe even just BHO, or anything else?  This is a better show of how we feel.  It sucks if WE are the ones giving Barry that kind of title. It is not deserved even when clearly we are trying to make fun or drive a point.  Something about idolizing him just doesn't make sense, especially for those of us who aren't thrilled with him, even just joking around.

Am I the only one who thinks this?

ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

It's the black velvet that sells

Given the nature of his supporters, I believe the portraits on black velvet will outsell all others.

My favorite Topic

I think the NYT sees bailout and the end of his halo and loves it.
