More Old Media Hypocrisy on Palin's Book Deal

  • Bookmark and Share

As Geoffrey Dickens reported earlier, Chris Matthews attacked Goveror Sarah Palin for hiring a ghostwriter for her upcoming book deal. In like fashion, Mark Silva of the Chicago Tribune's The Swamp Blog has also gotten into Laugh-at-Palin's-book mode and you can bet that this will be the scoff du jour among the left-media. But, the thing that proves the Old Media's hypocrisy and partisanship is this "collaborator" angle. The media are going nuts that Palin is working with what is essentially a ghostwriter -- though an upfront one, not a hidden one -- and acting as if this is somehow unusual. But it simply is not.

Few politicians that have books published under their name ever themselves put pen to paper. Politicians are generally not writers and it is completely common that they hire actual writers to do the heavy lifting of composing their book. But here is both Matthews and Silva acting as if Palin is the only one ever to do it.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Heck, sometimes politicians never even read the book that bears their name just allowing their name to be affixed to the cover and letting it go at that. Barry Goldwater, for instance, is famous for having hinted that he never read the famous book that bears his name. The Conscience of a Conservative was actually ghostwritten by Brent Bozell, Jr., father of our own L. Brent Bozell III.

Regardless of the truth, however, this Tribune hack really takes the cake. Here is how Mark Silva starts off his rant:

Reading her face, like a cover, one might think Sarah Palin is a little young to have enough material for "a memoir.''

Might I suggest that a similar opening sentence might be presented for another famously young politician with a book deal?

Reading his face, like a cover, one might think Barack Obama is a little young to have enough material for "a memoir.''

... and yet, Obama has two memoirs! Did Mark Silva make fun of Obama? Bet you can answer that one without my assistance.

Next the partisan Silva goes into the "hired writer" aspect of the story.

So the Republican hockey-mom-pitbull-grandma-national-political-prospect, with the help of a hired writer, is setting out to set her story straight.

And a few lines later hits the point again... you know, just in case someone missed it a few lines before.

Hired writer or no, the author of the memoir plans to put her own touch on the text.

So why the harping on the "hired writer" factoid? Why else but to hammer home the idea that Palin can't write it for herself? Why else but to place the seed of ridicule in the mind of the reader?

But, as I was saying, the list of those politicians that wrote their own books is very, very small. In fact there are at least two prominent book sellers whose names appear on covers of books written by ghostwriters that Silva has probably never once scolded for having a "hired writer." Those two are Bill and Hillary Clinton. Add to that John Kerry, Al Gore and every other extremist lefty favorite pol that is famous for "their" books and you'll get a left-wing list that Silva has mysteriously never shaken his writerly finger at.

Here on NewsBusters, for instance, we chronicled a much worse "collaborator" story that the Old Media itself completely ignored. Of course, that story was all about the time Hillary Clinton had a ghostwriter for her "award winning" book, It Takes a Village. And the story didn't stop at just the fact that Hillary didn't write her famous book, but it roiled further as she tried to keep credit from the woman that actually wrote the thing.

So, I have to ask: will Mark Silva chide Hillary for not only having a ghostwriter, but for stiffing the actual writer of credit? Somehow I'll have to guess that Silva will avoid the tale. No, it's much better to hold Palin to a standard that he won't hold anyone else to.

Just to recap what happened on Matthews' Hardball show:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Plus Sarah Palin –- now don't laugh –- is writing a book. Not just reading a book, writing a book. Actually in the word of the publisher she's "collaborating" on a book. I love the way that sounds. Does that mean she answers questions of the writer and then the writer writes the book? I guess the reason to have someone to write a book for you and claim it's your book is to get to do a nationwide book tour and act the part of a, of an author yourself. Well she's not the first person to pull that number. Sarah Palin - author! In tonight's Politics Fix...What is Sarah Palin up to?....She's got this book deal, she obviously is not gonna write it. They've already announced somebody is, she's gonna collaborate on it. What an embarrassment! It's one of these "I told you," books that jocks do. You know she's already declared, I mean, why they do it like this? "She can't write, we got a collaborator for her."

Finally, let me contrast all this "hired writer" scoffing with a bit of news from the May 18 issue of the Weekly Standard. It seems that a fellow named Quinn Bradlee has just issued a "memoir" of his own. The 26-year-old has been celebrated in various Old Media outlets as a promising young man that has something to say.

Only he didn't. Say it, I mean. Our young Mr. Bradlee didn't say it because he actually had his book ghostwritten for him by a fellow named Jeff Himmelman. So what you ask? Well, as it happens, Quinn Bradlee is the son of Benjamin Bradlee, former editor of the Washington Post, and Sally Quinn, former Post Style editor and current co-moderator of a Washington Post blog called On Faith.

So, are we going to see Mark Silva poking accusing fingers at Quinn Bradlee for his inability to write his own book? Is Silva going to wonder if the 26-year-old Bradlee is "old enough" to have anything to say in a memoir? Can we expect Matthews to say how "embarrassing" this Bradlee offspring is?

Just wondering.

It is common knowledge that JFK did not write Profiles in Courage, but that did not stop him from accepting the Pulitzer Prize, and it doesn't prevent the left from still talking about that wonder book he wrote.  Substantial evidence exists that 0bama's Dreams From My Father was ghost written by Bill Ayers since the writing style mirrors that of Ayer's book, Fugitive Days, or maybe they both had the same ghost writer.  Didn't Chris, Tingling Leg, Matthews write a book, or was it ghost written.

Given the fact that Palin is an extremely busy person, wife, mother, Governor, it isn't surprising that she would provide the journals she's kept for years, and work with someone to turn them into a book.

Oh, but you see, those

Oh, but you see, those other people had "hired writers" because they are just so darn busy saving the country and what-not.

Palin is hiring one because she is too dumb to write!

Sarah Palin is upfront about it from the beginning.  I'll bet her book cover will say "by Sarah Palin with..... "

How many of the the others have their ghostwriter on the cover? Didn't HRC's writer actually sue her for not crediting her?

They might say "Wow, that sucks!"  But at least they'll say "Wow!"  -Duff Goldman, the Ace of Cakes

How ironic coming from a

How ironic coming from a profession where their most prominent members are merely script readers on nightly news programs.

And their holy one can't even function without his ghost written words fed directly to him via the teleprompter.

Ghostwriter or co-author or

Ghostwriter or co-author or neither? If Sarah Palin's name and the writer that helped her are both on the cover, it is not a ghostwritten book. Of course the foregoing assumes that Mrs. Palin can't write a book about herself. I think she can. (Betcha she will do all the writing after reading these ghostwriter stories.)

Putting out this ghostwriter story is just a back handed way to say that Sarah Palin is too dumb to write a book about herself. Bye bye, MSM. Us unwashed masses aren't as stupid as you think. Your bias is showing.

Destroy Palin

This is nothing more than a continued assult on Palin so that she is so badly damaged in the 2012 election. The left fears her and will continue to trash her every day until it is in the minds of voters that she is a dumb, right wing, racist hater that has no business being in the White House. Pure and simple.

And here's Palin's

And here's Palin's response: "I can relate as a liberal target myself," Palin said. "What I find so remarkable is that these politically-motivated attacks fail to show that what Carrie and I believe is also what President Obama and Secretary Clinton believe — marriage is between a man and a woman."

Where are all the 2008 Presidential candidates' statements -- McCain, Romney, etc? Why is it the 2008 VP candidate is the only person standing up for marriage, here? Where's Jindel? Seems like leadership rises to the top, doesn't it?

Well, we have a dumb, left

Well, we have a dumb, left wing, racist hater that has no business being in the White House right now....

The left better watch out, or they may get Liz Chaney instead...

Us unwashed masses aren't

Us unwashed masses aren't as stupid as you think

And I say the last election proves this statement wrong.

So why the harping on the

So why the harping on the "hired writer" factoid?

Because they know they can get away with it. Their viewers are not the smartest in the world, so if they paint the story in a particular way -- that is, never pointing out how common this is -- then their biased mission is accomplished; they can pat themselves on the back; and the liberal agenda is advanced one more notch.

Thanks to Newsbusters, though, their days are numbered.

Obama's speeches?

BTW, who writes Obama's speaches? Looking at his difficulties during telepromter snafus, he certainly doesn't. Why isn't MSNBC all over this?

Why Liberal 'Elitists' Hate Sarah Palin

Elitism is a state of mind NOT privilege and wealth. Many wealthy people are not elitists and many elitists are not wealthy.

Liberal Elitists expect us to recognize their “superiority” and give them the special treatment they so richly deserve – not because of skill or what they have accomplished – but because of whom they are.

Everyone has known an elitist, they name drop and have pictures of themselves with some celebrity. They often live well above their means and own pretentious homes and cars. They pay to be listed in 'Who's Who' and have all sort of certificates hanging on their walls.

Elite feminists scream, this woman doesn't represent 'The American Woman', she didn't even allow her young to die in a dirty hospital utility room alone.

The Elitists 'real' problems with Sarah Palin are threefold - religion, her role as wife and mother and her 'commoness' in intellect.

We 'common folk' are truly sorry we embarrass the Elitists, maybe they can keep enlightening us.

Sarah Palin embodies the things elitists detest most and what most Americans represent .

I'm willing to bet....

she still sells more copies of "Her book" than Frosty Pelosi sold of hers.  Oh hell, if I wrote a book, it would sell more than Frosty did.  Again I say, most liberals have the attention span of a gnats butt!

Destiny rarely calls on you when it is convenient!

Tingles knows all about

Tingles knows all about ghost writers - after all, he served as one for that other illiterate hayseed, Jimmah Cotta.

Much Ado About Nothing

When is a book NOT "ghost written" or edited?

Even novelists are subject to editors these days.

As such, this controversy is BS and only shows how much some political persuasions fear and hate Sarah Palin.

Obamas ghostwriter

Here is what I posted yesterday on the Swamp Blog. Jack Cashill has done an extraordinary job exposing the Obama/Ayers coverup:

Here's some light reading for those who care (re: Ayers authored "Dreams from My Father"):

The usual m/o

Bill Clinton's ghostwriter was Will North.

Hillary Clinton's ghostwriter was Barbara Feinman.

This is normal liberal media strategy with Republicans. They do it with speeches too, remember the Fox News panel set up for first reactions to Palin's convention speech; Mort Kondracke's first reaction (to Hume) was 'yes it was a great speech, do we know who wrote it?'.

Bill Clinton's

Bill Clinton's ghostwriter was Will North.

Wasn't he an infamous 1980s Porn Star?  Sounds a perfect choice.

I am actually not a fan of

I am actually not a fan of Sarah Palin, but the bias here is as obvious as day.  I used to laugh at the idea that liberals were afraid of Palin, but after seeing that articles about Palin garner the most responses (mostly chauvinist - even from other women), and how many of the articles were saying the same thing (mostly about Palin's ethics complaints, which I have also found are mostly frivolous) I now see that liberals are more afraid of Palin than they've been of anyone in quite a while.

I am actually not a fan of

I am actually not a fan of Sarah Palin ... I now see that liberals are more afraid of Palin than they've been of anyone in quite a while.

And the reason you are not a fan of Palin?  She is as qualified as any to be POTUS and certainly more than Obama.  President Reagan used to be villified for not writing anything and then a book of what he wrote came out and shock.  We must not take anything teh media says at face value and look into the matter deeply.

I am a fan of Palin and am happy she has 3 or more years to mature into a formidable opponent.  Yes teh left is scared Sh**less of her.

Dreams From My Terrorist Ghostwriter...

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that Barack Obama didn't write his book DREAMS FROM MY FATHER....

(...The bigamist who dumped Obama at the airport aged 2, when he flew back to his wife in Kenya!)

Various textual analysis and sophisticated software, used for uncovering plagiarism, indicate it was written by WILLIAM AYERS.

Palin writes a book?

Hey, this is great! Now, the George W. Bush Library in the surplus FEMA trailer at Southern Methodist University at Dallas can have a second book and if this one has pictures that can be colored, it will keep the kids entertained while their parents look for the other book.

Isn't...

Interesting. I am so REPEATEDLY ASSURED that the Leftists are the smartest people to grace world civilization. It's a constant, never ending drumbeat. Yet, we NEVER see Leftists willing or able to debate actual ideas. No, we just see Leftists driving by with childish insults like this.

Maybe you can go to the bookstore and buy Levin's latest, and read it all. Carefully. You MIGHT learn something therein. If not, I got PLENTY more where that came from.
