About Dick Cheney: How the Old Media Creates a False Attack

  • Bookmark and Share

The newest false meme invented by the Old Media is this claim that ex-presidents and ex-vice presidents have some sort of "tradition of silence" where it concerns commenting on those that take residence in the White House after they leave. The reason the Old Media is pushing this false claim is because Dick Cheney has been commenting on Obama's security mistakes and the Old Media wants to scold Cheney for his efforts to get the truth to the people.

Certainly it is true that some ex-chief executives have maintained silence after they left office. Still, it isn't really true that there has been any long tradition of staying silent out of some sort of respect for the new president. But, no matter how many past presidents/vice presidents have remained quiet, the one glaring exception to that so-called tradition is the vp just before Cheney: Al Gore. And this man has been absent in the Media's attack on Cheney.

Think about it. Can you remember any report by any Old Media outlet that excoriated Al Gore for his constant, wild-eyed, screaming fits against the Bush administration for the last 8 years? Where was the Old Media tsk tsking Gore for, say, his 2004 appearance where he screamed at the top of his lungs that Bush "betrayed this country," and the "he played on our fears"? (Audio here) Why is Cheney a big meanie as far as the media is concerned for commenting on Obama, yet Al Gore was never reproached even once for attacking Bush and Cheney?

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Hypocritically, there wasn't any such Old Media attacks on Gore. No Old Media outlet shook their heads or wagged their accusatory fingers at Al Gore for the slobbering, uncivil outbursts that he engaged in and still engages in. Yet, here they are attacking Cheney for his outspokenness against Obama's policies. For that matter, the Old Media have also ignored Clinton and Carter's constant verbal diarrhea.

Nonetheless here we see the newest Old Media meme against Cheney being promulgated all over the place. The New York Times, CBS, MSNBC, etc., etc. They are all falling in line with the anti-Cheney talking points. Here is a recent CBS report for instance:

As the New York Times noted this morning, former Vice President Dick Cheney has been a vocal and consistent critic of President Obama since leaving office. That's something of a break from the past: Traditionally, presidents and vice presidents have stayed relatively quiet about the activities of their successors.

But, even the recent example of Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter excoriating any president not of their party (heck, Carter even went after Bill Clinton a few times) we can also go back into history and see ex presidents that have attacked presidents that followed them. Teddy Roosevelt, for instance was vicious against Woodrow Wilson. For that matter, he ripped William Howard Taft -- his own hand picked successor -- too.

But, here is the main point that makes silly this claim that vice presidents have some sort of tradition of remaining silent. You see, for the most part, vice presidents have been meaningless to the greater national debate. They were non-entites while in office and no one cared to hear from them afterward. They stayed silent because no one asked them their impressions. They were silent by default.

Does anyone remember the post White House career of Alben Barkley? How about Thomas Marshall? What happened to Charles Dawes? No one really cared. But, let's look at a few other ex-vice presidents that were well known for ripping administrations that came after theirs.

FDR's first vp, "Cactus Jack" Garner was not very happy with Roosevelt and when he left he was known to have harsh words for the man. Another of FDRs vps, Henry Wallace, ripped the next administration and almost won election to the presidency in his own right until Truman started fighting back. Nixon was no shrinking violet after he stopped being vp with Ike, as we all know.

We might even say that Franklin Roosevelt himself fits this bill. He ran for vice president in 1920 with James Cox of Ohio and lost. FDR certainly didn't remain quiet about all the administrations that came after 1920!

But, let's face the truth about this newest attack against Cheney. Some ex-presidents have remained quiet out of a feeling of respect for later administrations. Ike and H.W.Bush are some of the few. Also, many ex-vice presidents remained quiet because no one cared to hear from them. Yet, still others went on the war path against later administrations as they attempted to run for office themselves.

In the final analysis this claim that presidents and vice presidents "traditionally" remain quiet about future administrations is just a pile of horse manure. So, why is the Old Media plying this claim over an over again? Why else but to have just one more reason to beat up on Dick Cheney.

But what would you expect?

Oh poo. I have come to dread the articles by Mr. Huston.

He makes his point so succintly, there is little to add. Try as I might, I cannot disagree with a single point, nor can I add anything as it as all been well put.

So I will just pick on his spelling. ;)

Some ex-presidents have remained quite out of..

Um, sir? that would be quiet not quite.

Oh dear, here comes the backlash...

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars

!

How DARE YOU!

I am quiet upset at you.

Sheese. I spelled quiet correctly 50 times, and wrong only ONCE in that post. I guess if you were the media, that would mean that Huston has a "tradition of spelling quiet wrong." Eh?

And it's fixed now, so bleeehhh.

I get a kick out of Al Gore

I get a kick out of Al Gore claiming "he played on our fears".  What does Gore think he does with his global warming scare?  Does he think we are stupid?

Actually, MM

He does.

 "Does he think we are

"Does he think we are stupid?"

He does.  And judging by who controls Washington, D.C., most of us are just that.

The most successful war America has ever waged is quickly becoming President Obama's war on capitalism.

One other reason

the "old media" is plying(love that word, WTH) the claim that VP's should just STFU, is they hope it deflects people from finding out that, yes indeed Virginia, Obama and Holder are lying through their teeth.  It isn't torture, and how many and which dems knew all about this and said nothing?  Did the Obamunist know?  We already know that Reid and Pelosi knew, along with Levin.  I would think that, with the sub-committee he headed, the Obamunist knew too.

Please

Please use it all you want.

As to vps silence, it is telling that they've never asked for Gore's silece! They are only interested in Cheney's.

Let us not forget to include

Let us not forget to include Jimmuh in this group of not quite so quiet ex POTUS's.

Tradition of Silence

Funny how the article fails to cover the tradition of a new administration not criticisizing its predecessor.

Whatever tradition there was has been shattered by Obama and his instance at taking repeated cheap shots at the past Administration. I would be up in arms is this guy accused me of torture and apologized for my policies.

What they really mean is.....

Republican presidents have a tradition of keeping their mouths shut, once they leave office.  The beauty of it is, when they do open their mouths, they usually have something to say.

I believe ex-presidents, as a rule, understand that you're going to make mistakes at first and you're going to get criticized all over the place for what you do (unless of course you're Obama) so they just don't want to pile on.

IN Gore's case, he was given a pass because most of the press thought he was the winner in 2000 anyway, so they were just taking comments from their man and how he would be doing things.  They don't even notice how hypocritical it is for him using the phrase "he played on our fears" talking about Bush and not his meme with Global Warming, isn't that special?

The irony, in this case with Cheney, is he's talking about policy differences, yes, but also approaches to protecting this country from terrorists who don't play by the rules.  Deep down, there are some journalists that have to be worried that he might be right.  They're used to Democrats talking about doing things and not actually doing them. Obama doesn't feel the restraints of common sense, so he just does things and worries about the consequences later.  The press just wants to go along for the ride and doesn't want any contrary opinion out there putting bumps in the road.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

Isn't that special?

These clowns in the media are trying every trick in the book to silence conservative dissent to the Bamster's shoving through a commie agenda.

Too bad for them.

Dick Cheney will neither shut up or go away (thankfully).  And, as usual, Cheney is spot-on.  I really hope they move forward with this whole torture show trial thing.  Cheney is not only prepared, I think he's eager to take them on and pin their ears back.  And the potential is there to show the country that the Emperor has no clothes, nor does her Speakerness.  If the democrats move forward, there is no telling how many ways this will potentially blow up in their faces.

Interesting article.

Gotta love the MsM....they have become entirely too predictable.

I hope he fails, too.

Funny how that worked out

Isn't it interesting that Dick Cheney, the guy that the liberals said in 1999 was a poor candidate to run for office because he was practically on his death bed, is ten years later one of the Bamster's most vigorous critics? He wasn't supposed to make it through one term; what happened?

more flogging

Drag out olde Mr.Cheney, one more time??,what no news to spin up ??

I forgot Al Gore was a VP

After reading the article, I thought of Carter and Clinton.  Both seem to be on a mission to re-write history and try to take credit for things they didn't have anything to do with while in office.  Good ole Al Gore is such a bafoon, that I never even think of him as a former VP.  That just never comes to me when I see and hear him ranting about his global warming hoax. He's a snake oil saleman who avoids anything to do with reality, but makes a ton of cash selling his version of reality.  For a guy who's so outspoken on what everyone else should do in office, what did he do when he was in office?

The lefty MSM's plan is really very simple... If they cannot

paint you to look totally incompetent like Palin or Quayle then they will make you out to be evil.

Of course, they have so many useful idiots to trot out to make their point via hollywood or some liberal tenured JA.

Must See Video!

Speaking of Cheney (Liz Cheney), if you haven't already, you must see this video of Liz Cheney feeding Nora O'Donnell her lunch on VP Cheney/Rice's role in torture authorization.

Good grief, I wish our elelcted GOP officials would watch this video and take notes! See video (H/T Redstate):

http://www.redstate.com/moe_lane/2009/04/25/liz-cheney-breaks-nora-odonnell-on-torture-discussion/

I respect Mr. Cheney a lot

I respect Mr. Cheney a lot more now than when he was in office.  He's one of the few Republicans out there standing up to the MSM and the Dumocrats.

He doesn't come across as a RINO and abandon us once the elections are over like certain folks.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Defense !!!!

The Obama  administration's claim to fame in it's 1st 100 days, is that it was able to use each of the 100 days to blame the last administration. According to the MSM, Bush and Cheney should remain quiet and accept this drumbeat of lies. Cheney does what Cheney always does; he defends himself, just like he defended his country when IT came under attack.

Code of silence, my ass.

I don't think a day has gone by when President Obama hasn't wailed about the "failed policies of the past"- an obvious dig at the Bush administration. Or how about Vice President Joe Biden's truth twisting tale of lecturing Bush about his so-called failed leadership?  Clearly the smug duo armed with arrogance of power are not abiding by any gentleman's code of not attacking predessesors.

With this whole tortue memo/show trial nonsense, the Democrats (and the MSM)have been behaving as if both Bush and Cheney would soon be doing a perp walk down the Capital's steps. It is about time somebody gave a push back.  Thankfully, nobody does a "push back" like Dick Cheney.

You go Liz

Thanks for the link - Liz was so calm snd spot on.  She just clobbered the talking points.  We need to see more of her.
