MSNBC: Maddow Show Ratings Tumble

Apparently viewers are getting tired of the cutsey, smugness that is Rachel Maddow, and not just a few of them either. Ratings for the already low rated Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC have shown a steep decline recently, falling from a high of 1.9 million viewers to "slightly over 1.1 million."

Naturally, MSNBC President Phil Grifin is putting on the brave face calling Maddow a "rock star" and that Maddow is a "great success." He told the L. A. Times, "We've never had success anywhere near that in our 12-year history at 9 p.m. right out of the gate."

Apparently after barreling out of that "gate," Maddow took a harsh fall as her ratings took a dive.

Yes, Maddow is a rock star all right

She looks like one of the guys in Devo!  I don't know if she's good or bad because I would eat glass before watching MSNBC or any other MSM.  But it is fun to watch the socialist media outlets go the way of the buffalo.

 AgentAmerican,

I thing Jeff is refering to the plastic hair Devo used to wear back in the day. It was'nt always the upside down flowerpot hats. I also like Devo, & I believe they were underrated, bigtime.

As for Rachel Mancow, her show really is poorly done. She does her smug delivery & talks down to her viewers. That is not a good plan for cablenews TV success. The other thing, the idiots at MSNBC soften up her appearence when she does her own show, then you see her other shows. She looks very butch, very dyke-ish, & I'm sure Griff Jenkins wants his glasses back. She will never be a rating swinner at MSNBC, but nobody in charge at GE cares. Matthews just got a contract extention, & his ratings are plunging into the core of the earth. His show sucks, his ratings suck, & he gets rewarded with an extention, why should Maddow be any different?

Is hopefully a new day is dawning for the decline of MSDNC. Even the stockholders of GE are getting upset about the networks far left tilt. Couple that with Olb's interview last week with Garalafalaloo and this could mean, HOPEFULLY, the beginning of the end, at least for one of Milhouse's best press secretaries.

I am continually amazed how this piece is able to keep his head in the sand, among other places. His non denial denial about his left leaning tilt was just amazing tonight...

Warner

I guess this is something that is weird. The ratings for  for MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, Newsweek, Time and the NYT have had falling ratings and suscribers for years and I would say the majority here love to cheer that fact.

That is understandable, because many consider them the enemy within. However with their low viewership and FOX news having a more viewers than MSNBC and CNN combined, why do many people still blame losing the election in the MSM if their viewership is so low?

Could it be that the MSM is not so influencial after all and people can think for themselves?

Not the cables

Fact is, very few people watch cable news.  Most people watch Good Morning America, Oprah, Nightline, 60 Minutes and so on.  These shows are much more nuanced in their bias.  Sometimes it's something as simple as a scowl when mentioning a Republican's name (or looking over their glasses while interviewing them).  Sometimes it's how things are worded ("Eliminate costly tax cuts" vs. "raise taxes").  It's ommiting the Democrats scandals and pounding the Republican ones for as long as the public pays attention.  When they are forced to cover a Democratic scandal, they are sure to mention a Republican one, as perspective.

Most of the time it's putting fake information out there, but preceeding it "some say" or "research shows". And, of course, let's not forget the adjectives like "embattled president", "struggling economy", "controversial ideas" and "failed war effort".  After eight years of all this being thrown at them, day in and day out and back in and day out and on and on and on and on.... people start to believe it, but can't tell you why.  They just know that they hate the Republicans because they are bad and do bad things even though they can't give you a single example.  Fact is, there is not one example, but a constant barrage of little, cherry picked examples that have been dripping on the forhead of the American public for years.  They just accept it as fact.

I'm not denying the msm are bias, I am saying people can think for themselves, proof of that is George Bush winning two terms and winning and controlling both chambers for two years

The American people were not very happy with their performance and that is the reason why the Dems won 06 and 08

He had my vote

But who saw to it to

But who saw to it to influence the people that "conservative" George W. Bush was responsible for problems, even though he is a moderate?  The MSM.

"why do many people still

"why do many people still blame losing the election in the MSM if their viewership is so low?"

Because their viewership ISN'T so low in general, it's just lower than it used to be. It's still high enough to have an impact. That's why so many voters believe Sarah Palin said "Duhhhhh, I can see Russia from my house, derrrrr".

Why no alternative?

  • Conservative media (Fox) are soaring.
  • Liberal media (all others) are tanking.

Why doesn't anyone else adopt the conservative model?

It seems to me that conservatism has a winning track record. And, even if you're not a complete conservative yourself, you could at least split the Fox audience.

Are there so few writers, editors, producers ... never mind on-air personalities ... that there isn't enough of a talent pool to sustain a second conservative network? I think that's short-sighted. I'll bet half of them "go liberal" because it's the only way to keep their career. If you give conservatives more chance to make a living as a conservative, they won't get sucked into the liberal funnel.

Sadly, they feel that

Sadly, they feel that liberals can have more power to control the American people and limit their freedom.  The media took their cues from Pravda.

MSM's influence

Shawn- Comparing Fox vs. MSNBC + CNN is too limited and selective.  I think it is Fox + talk radio vs. all other TV plus almost all major newspapers.  John Zeigler's polling and interviews were very telling for me (Obama supporters knew which candidate had a pregnant daughter and a $150k wardrobe but didn't know who Reid or Pelosi were, and McCain supporters were overall much more informed.)

Sadly, to answer your question, I think most Americans have less time and attention for politics than they do for American Idol.  They are a blank canvas for the liberal media.

The bad penny

Maddow is to Air America and MSNBC what Bob Shrum is to Democratic Presidential campaigns.

The weakness of MSNBC programs is their aversion to airing opposing views.  So, instead of being shows where liberals root for the Lefty host to abuse a representative of the Right, they are merely snarkier versions of The Daily Show, sans the laughs.

I suspect that MSNBC will stick with Maddow, Olbermann, Shuster, and Schultz for the foreseeable future, and they'll retain a viewership of 1.0-1.5 million.

What's sad, is that if you were a LEFTIST internet dude, you might get your own show on MSNBC. Hell, looking at Special Ed's ratings, a timeslot may be available soon. I thought GE's main products were...

locomotives, steam turbines, and jet engines, but, interestingly, all anybody wanted to discuss at the annual meeting was the sickening leftist bias of its news networks. Forget the microphones being shut off...let's talk about the 60% drop in the share price, or the cutting of the dividend. What a great company to invest in ! How are you shareholders out there feeling right now? Retiring on your GE stock? LMAO at $11 per share and change. Anything under $10 is lovingly referred to as a 'penny stock'.

One more thing: Many mutual funds, pension funds, etc., are prohibited from investing in stocks under $10 or even $15. That means that they must sell. What do you think will happen when they do that? I give you the law of supply and demand...

Nothing but lies here

Ratings for pure political shows are down across the board post election. There's no way you didn't know that. You even had to link to an article that mentions that.

What's sad is how many people don't realise that almost everything here meets the definition of a lie: you're paid to advocate Scaife's (et al.) agenda and go out and find "evidence" after the fact. Then you make up crap with no justification like "viewers are getting tired of the cutsey, smugness that is Rachel Maddow" and the zombies here just cheer you on because they've swallowed your Kool-Aid.

Ragging muffin

Hmmm, 'down across the board'? Sorry, not true, check out this quote here from the same source:

First, despite the predictions of some analysts, Fox News'
Obama-age meltdown has not occurred. In fact, since the new Democratic
administration has entered office, the Rupert Murdoch-controlled
network looks as dominant as ever. During prime time, where the most
valuable advertising is sold, Fox News averaged more viewers through
the first quarter (2.3 million) than CNN (1.1 million) and MSNBC
(957,000) combined.

Guess that blows your little theory right out of the water.

EDIT: Oh my, look at this quote too:

Maddow's numbers have cooled recently, and March was her lowest-rated month so far.

~Question

Are these lies?

That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.

Oh those pesky facts

Hasn't Gary Hall given you the pesky fact lecture yet?

I hope he fails, too.

Answer...No they are not lies

Answer...

No they are not lies, but they fail to tell the whole story which essentially confirms the thesis which I have been advancing for months:  Fox News has successfully captured the overwhelming majority of the conservative and center/right cable audience while leaving the remainder dispersed among CNN, MSNBC, etc.

A few examples illustrate this undeniable reality:  Glen Beck was essentially the same libertarian/rightist at CNN as he is now, yet his ratings have exploded since moving to Fox.  Shep Smith is fairly centrist [and considered liberal by most NBers] and yet he blows away the center/right Lou Dobbs and conservative Larry Kudlow in the same time slots.  Greta Susteren, a Democrat who does very few politically oriented shows, has twice the viewers of Anderson Cooper, a left-leaning [reportedly] registered Republican.

So, what is an appropriate response by CNN and MSNBC?  When they had a roughly equal balance of "left" and "right" political commentators, both networks were still regarded by conservatives as stalwarts of the "liberal" media.  As I mentioned in my earlier post--and have frequently opined for many months at NB--it would be preferable if those networks expanded their conservative programming.  But I'm not sure it's the solution for gaining market share against Fox.  That paradigm wasn't especially productive in previous years (from a ratings perspective), and there is little to suggest the strategy would portend a more positve result now.

it's a tedious connection bigtimer

Lefties love to compare the two, saying "our boogeyman" is worse than "their boogeyman."

But not so much.

George Soros is personally involved in making donations to specific people and speaking at lefty events. The Washington Post admitted ten years ago that Scaife gives donations through various foundations and puts no pressure on groups to do his personal bidding.

I fail to see any material distinction.  Scaife doesn't need to pressure the groups to do his bidding since the beneficiaries of his largesse already share his world view.

nice logic there Kosbot

First, notice how he completely draws attention away from the topic at hand by attacking a philanthropist. I submit that from now on we call this tactic RADA - Random Accusations to Divert Attention.

Second, note how the Sarah Scaife Foundation is one in a list of many. Yet rag zeros in on this because - wait for it - Scaife was a boogeyman in the Clinton years because he presumably paid Ann Coulter to write High Crimes and Misdemeanors. Coulter has long since said she wished this rumor were true because then she could collect all that money she was supposed to get paid. His name went dormant during the Bush years, what with Dick Cheney and Karl Rove stealing all the spotlight. But now without Bush lefties need a new boogeyman, so apparently they've all decided to go back to whining about Richard Scaife.

Third, those donations went to MRC which is a lot bigger than just Newsbusters. Unless rags here can prove that Richard Scaife oversees NB bloggers to approve of their content, his complaints are pretty vague.

Not for his possible

Not for his possible support of Coulter, but rather his obsessive anti-Clinton views and the funding of the odious Arkansas Project.
