OK, now by that headline you are most likely assuming that I am calling del Toro, Carrey and Penn Hollywood stooges and making fun of them. Of course, we already know that Penn and del Toro are stooges on the "useful idiot" level, but you may wonder why I am slapping Carrey? Well, I mean it in the strictest sense -- that Hollywood is casting for a new 3 Stooges team and these are the three Nyucks under consideration. It is del Toro as the new Moe, Carrey as the next Curly and Penn as our favorite nebbish, Larry.
But leave it to Hollywood to take the funniest threesome in Hollywood history and make a muck of it. This isn't really the 3 Stooges at all. See, it is a "new" one, set in modern day, where three guys sortta, kinda like the 3 Stooges find each other in an orphanage and start a comedy team bringing them fame and fortune.
See it's a "fictional treatment that maintains the Stooges' gleeful slap schtick updated for a modern milieu." Aw geeze. "Updated for a modern Milieu" tells me that they haven't a clue what the Stooges were about in the first place. Can you say "straight to DVD"?
Who can bet we'll get a PC Stooges all neurotic over their "portrayal of violence," filled with angst and driven to dark introspection? It'll be a brooding, dark "comedy," right?
I can see it now, del Toro as an illegal immigrant Moe that thinks he's a "funnier" Che Guevara, Carrey won't be able to stop mugging long enough to give his lines (like most of his other movies) and Penn will be a gay Larry, high on heroin, and going on and on about "the oppressed" every time you turn around. They'll be up in therapy for "anger management" and end up working at a Starbucks in L.A.
Yeah, It's gonna be hilarious. Do they have to ruin everything in La La Land?

Went to the movies tonight (Knowing) and saw a preview for the remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123". Denzel (Good guy) and Barbarino (Bad guy) in what looks to be a big retread yawn.

He had never seen them before, and he sat there enthralled, staring in wide eyed wonderment for half an hour. Finally he said, "Dad, these guys are FUNNY, who are they!" For some reason my two brothers and I loved them as we grew up, but my three sisters hated them--must be a guy thing. I can't picture Jim Carrey as Curly though, which is probably the most important role of the three. He is tall and skinny while Curley was short and stocky. I don't think the stooges can ever be duplicated, but time will tell. And please, no Shemp!

We have been lead to believe that the Stooges were purely a trio who were the masters of slapstick and subtle humor during the heyday of the Hollywood short feature. But thanks to the renasaince and openness of our culture, that has only been made possible by the election of an enlightened and educated Progessive, can the real truth of the Three Stooges now be told.
If you study, examine, and extrapolate the hidden messages within the Stooges short features, the underlying themes and messages emerge and become so obvious! The Stooges lack of work-ethic was nothing short of brilliant and shows that these three men of the 30's and 40's had the forsight to understand what it takes to live in a post fascist Bush era. The way that the Stooges used to share everything, including one room apartments, food, and even the same bed for sleeping, was a statement that was way ahead of it's time, but should be emulated by all during our current Economic Crisis.
Brevity prevents me from exploring the multitude of hidden and not so hidden political statements that the Stooges laced within their short features, but I'm sure that Hollywood will do the wonderful job they always do, and will clear up any debate about what political beliefs the Stooges really had, including the newly discovered Stooges short that warned us against an up and coming actor named Ronald Reagan.

There is one thing we DO know though, Sean Penn won't be winning an award for this one cause I doubt they'll add a gay subplot or some politically motivated talking point the academy wants to push on Hollywood.

Whenever anyone uses an analogy such as "that was insane.. who's in charge, the Three Stooges?" is a insult the the Stooges.. they were brilliant comic geniuses and ahead of their time.
The only movie to do justice in any remake was a made for TV movie in 2000 with Michael Chiklis as Curly. It was an homage to them and treated their lives with the respect due.
A remake with Del Toro, Carrey and Penn (of all people) is an insult.
