Obama Sneaks Orders, Documents Through, Media Caught Unawares

  • Bookmark and Share

Despite all claims to the contrary, President Obama has not been very vigilant about pursuing that idea of "transparency" he ballyhooed during the recent campaign. Politico reported on a host of documents, proclamations and executive orders that Obama has made in the last month and none of them were online. In fact, many were not even released at all to the press by the White House.

So, where is the drumbeat of outrage about the "secret presidency" we heard for the last 6 or so years?

Remember all the mavens of the Old Media establishment that kept claiming that Bush was too secretive? Along with the Old Media, the nutrooters also took up the claim as a battle cry against the evil Bush administration. Of course, Bush was trying to fight an intelligence war where keeping secrets means life or death for our soldiers. But, regardless of Bush's reasons, the media and the left were constantly apoplectic over this supposed "secrecy."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

It was undemocratic, mean spirited, anti-American... evil even. The left was in a constant state of righteous indignation over Bush's secrecy.

Then came the answer to their dreams, the man to cause tingles up their legs, Barack Obama. Why, he was going to change everything. It was to be a government of "transparency," don't ya know? Obama made all sorts of promises to put every government policy, debate, and document on line for all to see.

Apparently, neither Obama nor his supplicants in the media are much worried about secrecy now.

In his first weeks in office, President Barack Obama shut down his predecessor’s system for reviewing regulations, realigned and expanded two key White House policymaking bodies and extended economic sanctions against parties to the conflict in the African nation of Cote D’Ivoire.

Despite the intense scrutiny a president gets just after the inauguration, Obama managed to take all these actions with nary a mention from the White House press corps.

The moves escaped notice because they were never announced by the White House Press Office and were never placed on the White House web site.

Politico also notes the Register is published days after the fact, so the news is no longer new. Politico further says that this is a reversal of the openness that the Bush administration practiced.

In fact, many of these secret initiatives and orders were only found because bloggers dug them up from the Federal Register, the daily compendium of government actions issued by the National Archives.

And this fact, that bloggers dug them up, doesn't that demolish the oft repeated claim by the Old Media that we need journalists because bloggers don't have the resources or capability to keep an eye on government like real reporters do? Looks like all those "real" reporters seriously dropped the ball in this story!

Here is the list Politico noted.

One order Obama signed Feb. 5 expanded the National Economic Council to 25 people by adding the Secretary of Health and Human Services; Secretary of Education Arne Duncan; senior adviser Valerie Jarrett; “climate czar” Carol Browner and two other officials.

Another order the president signed the same day added two slots to the Domestic Policy Council, bringing it to a total of 26 people. Some slots were reassigned. The chief technology officer was among those added to the panel, while “AIDS Policy Coordinator” was removed. It was unclear if that was a substantive change, simply reflected plans to keep the AIDS czar post at the State Department, or perhaps both.

Another Obama executive order, signed January 30, canceled two Bush-era executive orders relating to regulatory review. The White House did release chief of staff Rahm Emanuel’s memo halting regulations in the works at federal agencies, but didn’t release another Obama memo setting a 100-day deadline for agency heads to recommend a new regulatory review process. The memo indicates that Obama may want to do some things differently on the regulatory front than the last Democrat in the White House, Bill Clinton.

Some of these seem a bit important, don't they? Expanding government by fiat, creating cushy new jobs for friends, summarily changing the way regulations will be reviewed... aren't these things that need to see the light of public review?

So, what about that whole "transparency" thingie, Barack?

The White House belatedly posted the mysteriously missing documents claiming a simple oversight after Politico inquired about them.

Lastly, where is the anguished outcry about this secrecy? Would the Old Media have allowed belated postings of secret orders under the excuse that it was just an "oversight" if Bush had done it?

You tell me.

They are all saying

They are all saying (cannibalizing Ron Silver's comment)..

How DARE he!!  Oh, that's right; this is OUR secretive President now!

Secrecy is fine....in the "right" hands.

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows. -Bart Simpson

Isn't if more a case of

The right hand doesn't know what the left had is doing?

Problem we know what the "left hand" is doing - BIG power grab, and the cowards in the media let it happen, cause Barry cant fail, not after being promoted as the change agent of hope - seems we've gotten the Change to Hopelessness (for us taxpayers).

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

Cowards? No, ENABLERS

“BIG power grab, and the cowards in the media let it happen,”

How about:

BIG power grab, and the ENABLERS in the media SECRETLY REJOICED,

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

I'll see that

and raise it to "Enabling Cowards".

And Raise Your Raise

''Media Caught Enabling The Husseiniac Coward''

For what it's worth...

I know that Ron Silver made that comment (at Clinton's first inauguration, wasn't it?), but wasn't he one of the few Hollywood-types that "came around" after 9/11?

I don't know if he has backslid in the meantime.

Correct

It was actor Ron Silver that said at Clinton's first inaugural that the military jets flying over head were "Our jets now" (and by that he meant the liberal's jets).

Also, he did come around to a more centrist position after 9/11 and I am not aware he has done any backsliding from that stance.

what will the other excuses be?

1.  The President was too busy solving the "failed economic policies of the Bush Administration" (despite objective analysis)

2.  The President is just one man, he cannot be held responsible for the actions of his staff

3.  His dog at it.

4.  That depends on how you define "transparency"  (H/T bill clinton).  We didnt say "WHEN" we would publish them...

5.  The number of documents in question is 70 percent less than what Bush failed to publish.  Obama is an improvment.

6.  "They WERE published!  They were in the Stimulus Bill, didnt you read it!?"

7.  You are not allowed to question the integrity of The Great Leader.  (psst, pass that guy's name onto the IRS)

8.  "The American People dont Care about these documents" (h/t Chuck Schumer)

9.  Asked for comment, the Obama Administration - currently on the road solving all of the pressing problems of the American People to create a more perfect union, responded, " the obama administration is commited to working hard on behalf of the American people, Suggestions to the contrary are being levied by 'Talk Radio' and are further proof that the lies and deception on our airwaves must be regulated."

..........etc.

the list could go on and on...there will be no shortage of excuses...that is for sure.

Oh, come on...

You were so close to finishing your Top Ten List.

letterman

Shouldn't the list be in reverse order?

And, the number one unbelievable reason is....

It's Bush's fault.

(Grabbed that from farther down in the comments.)

Secret President's Business.

These revelations are alarming. So glad I am not an American!

You think that's alarming?

This guy is so super secretive and THE RIGHT is allowing him to go forward.

He is not legally eligible to sit in the Presidency as he is a dual citizen, and rather than force him out of the office he fraudulently holds, the so-called right just sits back and whines about him. TOTALLY WORTHLESS.

Yep...I get accused for spouting truth...I'm the one with the tinfoil hat, but mark my words..this guy will be removed because he is an usurper just as Chester Arthur was..Chester was an Irish citizen who usurped the seat--fortunately he died.

NB calls me crazy these days, so I don't hang around here much anymore, but when he is removed from office ya'll just remember who told ya...

Oblahblah has 30 different court cases and eventually the Supremes will have to remove him.

Just sayin'..........

Hey sentforth

I, for one, have missed you.  And I don't think you are crazy at all. (In fact, I have been fashioning my own tinfoil hat to match yours) Don't be a stranger.

somewhat

I agree to remove him, but very much alive. If he dies in office, he'll be a martyr which we DO NOT need. His bankrupt philosophy needs to fail and fail in a big way to shine light on their true agenda, which, by the way, is starting to rear its ugly head.

Dying in office

is the single worst thing that could occur during this administration.  Seriously.  Before I pray he fails in his socialist agenda, I pray he lives through his full term(s).  I don't even want to try to imagine the chaos that would follow.

How's this for secretive??

During my AM surfing, I caught this at American Spectator in an article by Mark Hyman called Obama's Enemies List

This just jumped out at me:

In precedent-setting action, Obama moved his director of political affairs, a highly partisan post, from the Old Executive Office Building into the West Wing. Political operative Patrick Gaspard was given White House access not experienced by his predecessors. Obama official Shauna Daly, a non-lawyer and career opposition researcher described as a "partisan dirt-digger," was assigned to the White House counsel office. [HUH?]  The move signals not only a new low in partisan activities, but suggests the office assignment may be intended to hide Daly's political activities under the guise of the counsel's attorney-client privileges.

How's that "new kind of politics" thing going, Mr. President?

Oh, smartypants.....

LOL.....shoulda known that wouldn't get by you.....

well I think it bears repeating here....

I am constantly amazed at the macinations of this new administration.  It is frightening to me how much power is being concentrated in an "inner circle"  and how oblivious or uncaring the "watchdog" press is about it.

Don't know

I don't know if you know this or not, but I am a front page contributor on the conservative site RedState.com, too.

I write for three of the top 50 websites (on some lists, anyway). NewsBusters, RedState and Stoptheaclu. Then there is always my own site publiusforum.com

Certainly not everything I write appears on NewsBusters. Only the media criticism stuff. I appear on about a dozen other sites, too.

Busy beaver.

Didn't know that; I'll have

Didn't know that; I'll have to add those to my reading list!

You better enjoy the

You better enjoy the successes while you can because it is only a matter of time before Obama comes after these types of websites. Look what the dems are trying to do to Rush and conservative radio. The internet will be next. You can count on it.

The way

The way things seem to be going, it's easy to fear you are right.

MB--secretive indeed. I

MB--secretive indeed. I heard today on the radio that Obama signed the document that dissolved the Mexico City agreement in the dark of night, no cameras, reporters.

The same commentator said that when Obama signed the stimulus bill there was no one else present--no one from Congress or the media. Don't know if this is true, but if it is, it is a very bad sign. And, of course, we have the "second" oath of office he took when he "flubbed" the first one. No media there either.

This is a very strange dude who is up to no good. Transparency? I think not.

Don't cha know

10. Bush's fault.

That was covered in #1. I

That was covered in #1.

never enough

It must be repeated multiple times. Items 14, 17, 22, 33, 45, etc. are all the same

It is amazing

that the people that elected him can't or won't see how all of this is so dangereous.  It is only a matter of time before this secrecy and government control comes after them too.  I'm reminded of something I read in school I can't remember all of it.  It was written about Germany under Hitler the end of it stuck with me...."when they came for me there was noone left to speak out".  Not sure if that is word for word but it speaks to what happens when the government starts going after it's citizens i.e. President Obama going after Rush and all the calls for the "fairness Doctrine".  Just remember it's only a matter of time before they come for you.

He's our secret evil

He's our secret evil Fascist now. What do you want us to do, tell everybody what's going on? Are you nuts, then they would start complaining.

“Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace.” — James Madison

Well we know where our PRAVDA media is, how else is he going to get cover.

in addition

After reading all of the comments here, there isn't much more one can add except to sum it up by saying that BO lied.  The MSM has been too busy basking in the glow of his halo to notice the horns that are growing underneath.

I think the horns

were already there the msm just photoshopped them out

obama lied

and lied and lied and still to this day is a chronic liar and Lord knows how many Americans will die because of him. I respect the office, just not the current holder.

The transparancy this emperor was talking about

  Was just his clothes.

(Get it? The Emperor has no clothes...?  It is still really early here.)

Great post, Warner!

By the way, I hope you have a left wingnut start your car for you.

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

LOL

My dad is a retired cop. If I had a dollar for every time he warned me about that!!

A legitimate and worthwhile

A legitimate and worthwhile media would call this guy out for the fraud he is.  But we don't have a worthwhile media -except for that part of it which is now in danger of being silenced.

I have a friend who was forced to flee Poland during the height of the Solidarity movement.  She sees the porkulus bill, the attempt to silence talk-radio, and all the secret executive orders freeing terrorists, and the media's complicity with Mr. Soetero-Hussein, and she laments, "this is the Kremlin all over again."

She is distraught and angry because she and her late husband (who spent a year in prison for opposing communism) fled to the USA for freedom only to see the same socialism they fought against for decades gradually, and now suddenly, become engrained here.

She told me that after the Communists took over it wasn't more than two or maybe up to five years that the vast majority of people opposed the regime - but by then it was too late - the people were powerless and it took over 50 years of struggle, hardship and death (and the trifecta of Reagan, John Paul II and Thatcher) to finally break shackles of socialism...

...and we, the sheeple, are voluntarily putting them on again....What a tragedy.

Yeah Transparent.......

Transparent like a bucket of Chicago sewage

This is what happens when the media are biased.

Instead of doing their jobs, they are cheeleading for "their side". The same situation could happen with a conservative President and a conservatively biased media, I've just never seen those two situations in my lifetime. The current media is 90% biased toward the left and we now have THE most liberal President in the whitehouse in 100 years (at least) or maybe EVER.

I don't even believe that Obama is Constitutionally eligible to hold the office. All data and appearences seem to point toward a Kenyan birth that was registered in Hawaii.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Alan Keyes / Sarah Palin - 2012

Sure, the secrecy is

Sure, the secrecy is bad...but not as bad as what's happening in front of our very eyes. Yesterday - what I will now refer to as "Black Tuesday" - will go down as one of the saddest days in our nation's history. Unfortunately, most Americans won't comprehend the gravity of the events that took place.

In the Wake of Black Tuesday

We are on a collision course with disaster...and the actions and philosophies we adopted yesterday will only speed up the process. There's no need for secrecy when the population can be so easily duped.

it is so easy

How do you figure out what Obama will do next? Just listen to what he has said before.

If he says he won't hire lobbiests, then he will hire lobbiests.

If he says he will protect us from terrorists, expect him to hire a pro-terrrorist AG.

If he says he will fix the economy, expect him to hire a tax cheat and a failed CEO.

If he claims he will be transparent, expect opaqueness.

This is so simple and typical of democrats, say something and do the opposite. In this respect Obama is very transparent.

From Politico???

I'm shocked that the liberal website Politico.com would do this story, since it portrays their guy in such a negative light. Maybe it slipped through the filters.

At least

Obama's trying to be transparent. Like his new website Recovery.org that tracks how the stimulus money is being spent and how many jobs are being created.

To attack him for not being transparent is like attacking Bush for not shredding the Constitution enough.
