**IMPORTANT UPDATE Below/Clarification on transcript**
Apparently, President Barack Obama thought that Jessica Simpson's weight was something he needed to make fun of during his pre-Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer on NBC Sunday. Seriously. Obama called Jessica Simpson a fatty on national TV.
Lauer displayed for the audience the cover of a recent issue of the tabloid entertainment magazine US Weekly that featured the President's wife and daughters and also had an insert photo pushing a story about singer Simpson.
As he viewed the cover, Obama decided to smack the singer down for "in a weight battle."
Lauer: Yeah, well -- let -- let me show you. This is the -- the current issue of -- of Us Weekly.
Obama: Right.
Lauer: And here’s a great picture
Obama: Oh, it’s beautiful.
Lauer: -- of -- of you and -- and Michelle and -- and your daughters. Now, the -- the reason I bring this up I think is funny. It’s a great picture.
Obama: Yeah.
Lauer: But I wanna show you the cover. Look what they did. They -- they took you off the cover.
Obama: Yeah.
Lauer: They took you out of it.
Obama: It -- it’s -- it’s a little hurtful.
Lauer: You got replaced by Jessica Simpson.
Obama: Yeah, who’s in a weight battle apparently. (LAUGHTER) Yeah. Oh, well.
Now, let's think about this incident a bit, shall we?
It seems a bit low of the President of the United States to so offhandedly slam a mere entertainer, doesn't it? Is this something that a good politician would do? What did Simpson ever do to Obama?
Lastly, let us imagine the hue and cry that would have been raised if George W. Bush had on national TV slammed a singer for being fat? Would the moonbats of the left have ignored that? Wouldn't the rest of the media have gone nuts reporting the story if it should have been Bush instead of Obama that called someone like Jessica Simpson fat?

**IMPORTANT UPDATE**
This piece has been edited to correct what the President said about singer Jessica Simpson. When I first came across this story, I read the transcript that MSNBC posted on line. The transcript posted says that the president said that Simpson is "losing a weight battle." (and still does as of this correction)
After I read the transcript I then watched the video and when it came to the part of the interview upon which I focus here, I had the words of the transcript in my head. As it occurs, however, on second viewing I realize that the transcript is wrong. The President did NOT say the word "losing."
The President actually said that Simpson is "in" a weight battle. The MSNBC transcript is wrong.
So, I apologize for not catching MSNBC's mistake. It does not alter my point, however, that Obama was commenting on Simpson's weight. Saying someone is "in a weight battle" is not very much different than saying they are fat.
Still, we need to have the record correct on what the President said. And I apologize for the eror.

Everything about this is ridiculous. Mat Lauer asking him about the cover and showing the pictures and advertising for US weekly is all just as bad. It's a tabloid magazine and they both gave credibility to it -all because "The One" and his fam are adored in it.
Lauer should have asked if he was embarrassed by being splattered all over tabloid magazines and was he worried that his Presidency is built too much on celebrity.

February 4, 2009 - 09:02 ET by Georgia GirlYou've named yourself "The Diplomat"? You might want to re-think that one, unless you are trying to be ironic. I think most people get this TV clip for what it is -- an unwise and unnecessary move for Obama to repeat that magazine banner/sub-headline. Let's call it "tacky." With his saying the headline out loud(along with "apparently"), it not only becomes an announcement, but it also lends a certain credibility to the icky topic (those who deem certain women to be overweight). And who would want that said about them on national TV -- especially by the President of the United States? Ugh. At the very least, it was thoughtless and insensitive.
Oh, and your "Ha, losers" comment...really? Gee, what a snappy comeback that was.

February 2, 2009 - 17:53 ET by bpjamIsn't the real story here that the media is incredulous that Obama got knocked off the cover of a celebrity rag?? And even Obama appears surprised that he got bumped for a possibly fat former singer.
At what point in American history was a sitting President a subject for celebrity rags? And since when did a sitting Prez ever pay attention to them or even know who or what was on the cover?

The really sad thing is
February 2, 2009 - 06:15 ET by Army BratThis doesn't surprise me in the least. He rarely considers the weight of his words as POTUS. He has nor respect for, or understanding of the office he holds.
Just look at the results of his poorly considered words to
Ahmadinejad. They only served to embolden the little rat, making him
believe that we are weak.
One sues for peace out of weakness in
the Islamic world. I'm no diplomat and I know this. The response from the Thug in Chief of Iran
illustrates this perfectly.
He listens to hate filled rap music. Way to go Prez.
He turns up the heat to suit himself, while telling all others to turn theirs down.
He just doesn't get it. The President of the United States is supposed to lead by example. I guess no one told him this...or he simply replied..."I won...I can set the thermostat anywhere I like."
I love this little tid-bit...
Barack Obama is serving a little dinner victory party over his kickback
stimulus which just passed the house and he is serving "wagyu steak". For
those who do not know what that is, it is a fatty beef, which
is fed beer, given massages, comes from Japan, looks like white meat
instead of red meat, and costs 100 dollars a pound.
How elitist can you get?
The first slap at American ranchers in not serving American beef, and more hypocrisy because eating beef causes Global Warming doncha know.
Why are taxpayers having to pay for imported beef for the President, when he says that the country is circling the drain?
His constant claims that the economy is the worst evah, are wearing thin. He needs fear, he sows fear gleefully. Fear is what he needs to advance his agenda quickly before it is seen for what it is...before the euphoria of the masses passes and they see him for what he is.
Obama's a little man...a puppet chosen by his handlers to achieve their agenda through him. He did not rise of his own merit to the position he holds although he believes he has.
We know better. He was chosen for what he is and placed where he is by others, older and wiser than he. In short, he believes his own hype.
He's still a child, never having had to deal with the real world that the people in small towns that he disdains and insults, calling them bitter...clinging to religion and guns, deal with every day.His handlers used iconography, concerts, hundreds of millions of dollars and the willing cooperation of a boot licking media to place this egomaniac in office.
The worst part of it all...I don't know what he believes in. I don't know if he wants what is best for America, (Though I seriously doubt it.) and is just too naive to know what that is, or, as it appears to be, that he wants only what is best for his party or his agenda.
I honestly don't know if he really thinks that Socialism is good for America, or if 20 years of hate filled rants from Rev. Wright are what's echoing in his mind. The latter sems far more likely.I find it very difficult to believe that listening to a hate filled anti-American like Wright for 20 years had no effect on the man.
He says he wants to bring fundamental change to America.
When I think of the fundamentals of America, I think...Capitalism first and foremost. Capitalism is what made this country the most powerful and the richest nation in the world. It's the reason people from all over the world risk death to come here. I think of Freedom of Speech, which he seeks to end for Conservative talk radio, my voice. I think of my right to bear arms...the last resort for citizens against tyrants and how he voted in favor of every gun control measure that he could...no matter how restrictive.
forgive my rant...I'm pissed....and I don't mean drunk.

Wagyu
February 2, 2009 - 06:42 ET by dmntd1Actually, Wagyu beef IS American Beef. It is the American equivalent of Kobe beef, which is the beef you described. There are subtle differences, but all by the most food-inclined can't tell the difference.
That said, I agree with everything else you've said. I'm particularly pissed that the 'most powerful man in the world' would appear so casual on television. It neither befits his status, nor the image of the President of the United States. He appears weak, in my eyes, when he dresses so casual for a television appearance.

Wrong, but don't let facts
February 2, 2009 - 12:53 ET by jimpryor99Wrong, but don't let facts interfere with stupidity. Wagyu is not the American equivalent of Kobe. Kobe is simply one place in Japan where they raise Wagyu cattle. There is actually no such thing as "Kobe Beef" in Japan. The Japanese call it Tajima, not Kobe.
So you have American Wagyu and Japanese Wagyu. Both are still Wagyu.

February 2, 2009 - 16:05 ET by Tim the EnchanterI for one, am not confused. The Cockatoo is a Conservative bird. The Cuckoo is a Liberal bird, for which I offer the following evidence:
1. The mother cuckoo lays her eggs in another bird's nest. Doesn't build one for herself- steals another bird's labor.
2. When the cuckoos hatch, they crowd the other chicks (the ones that rightfully belong there) and eat most of what the parent birds bring back- steal food that they do not deserve and did not earn.
3. Eventually, the cuckoos kick all the other birds out of the nest, where they fall to the ground and die.
Yup, the cuckoos are definitely Liberal birds.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I find it just a little bit disturbing that Obama even jokes about how "hurtful" it is when his picture isn't being displayed on the front page of a celebrity gossip magazine like US Weekly. Typical leftoid.
February 2, 2009 - 09:30 ET by Hunter12After eight years of listening to the left disect everything President Bush did under an electron microscope and then rate the minutiae on an intelligence meter, it becomes very interesting that walking into windows, dissing women on national television, the 'Ums" and "Ahs" sans teleprompter, and various other displays of stupidity ("I sat in church for 20 years, but didn't realize I was listening to a racist.") are now expected to be passed on by the right.

You misspelled hemorrhoid.
February 2, 2009 - 12:44 ET by Hunter12Your bio can say you're Mother Teresa, if you want it to. You seem willing to give this a pass. It is not a big issue. My point is that the left never wanted to give President Bush a pass on anything. Please point out where he made even the slightest mistake and a talking head said, "No big deal." Instead we get stuff like the Chinese Door. It was a door. It was locked. Should he have walked around the room checking the doors before he spoke? Here's your headline if he does that: "President Bush Tries to Ensure Easy Exit Before Facing the Press." President Obama was standing in front of a window. No doorknob, painted shut. Give him a pass. The left has brought us things like "Bush Reads Book While People Die", choking on a pretzel, or his problems with geography. Obama got a pass on "57 states", a phrase that has a direct tie to a Muslim education. I find that a lot more troubling than not knowing the location of one of the "Stans" (i.e., Warizistan), or how to pronounce some obscure PM's last name. President Obama's reference to 57 Muslim states becomes even more troubling when you consider that as recently as 2001, there were only 56 and the OIC wasn't formed until well after he finished his madrassa education.
I apologize if I offended your sensibilities. I question your willingness to give a pass to something that would have been an issue during the last 8 years when "our" guy never got any passes on anything.

I quit giving to the NRCC because I think we have too much of a tendency to "stay above the fray" as conservatives. The other side isn't going to play nice and we need to stop as well. I'm not talking about Daily Kossack-types of name-calling, but when an obvious one crops up we need to recognize and confront the libs on their double standards. I think your point that President Obama may have just been reading the caption under Jessica Simpson's photo is correct. NOW and the MSM would have been camped on the White House steps had this been George Bush's statement, regardless of the context. That was my point.

Redirect your fire at me, Hunter
February 2, 2009 - 22:59 ET by JerRedirect your fire at me, Hunter..."daughtry"'s on your side--I'm not. In the 90's, I was perpetually annoyed by what I perceived as the penchant of Democrats for "staying above the fray" while 'libruls' in general and the Clintons in particular were under constant assault from the right. However, after witnessing much of the web-based offensive by the left against Bush over the past eight years, I have developed somewhat different and deeper perspective and concluded it is the "fray" itself which should be deplored--not the reluctance to jump into it.
With respect to the alleged microscopic coverage of anti-Bush minutiae [unrelated to boader policy criticisms] by the MSM, I can only say that it must indeed be so microscopic as to be virtually undetectable--I just don't see it. Having rarely watched David Letterman in recent years [unlike in the 90's when I was a regular viewer laughing at the hilarious Clinton-themed Top Ten lists], I had not seen his recurring sketch--I think it is entitled Great Moments in Presidential History--in which a clip of a Bush verbal gaffe follows a couple of memorable quotes from Lincoln, Jefferson, etc. But, I have seen the taped bits replayed on Scarborough from time to time. They are clever and funny [as were the Clinton Top Ten's], but what really struck me was the fact that, in most cases, it was the first time I had even seen, or had been otherwise made aware of, the particular misstep or word-fumbling episode in question. [And I believe I stay at least as current and well informed as the average American.] In fact, the scrutiny which Gore received over his verbal slip-ups and clumsy utterances ["inventing the internet" being the most prominent] was at least as strict--if not more strict--than that directed at Bush in the 2000 campaign.
Having said all of that, I do agree that the media has been far too compliant with and sympathetic to Obama in the past and needs to sharpen the questioning and the criticism. In that regard--if the excerpts I saw from a press briefing week before last are any indication--the reporters seem to be doing just that, and I trust and hope it will continue.

February 2, 2009 - 23:58 ET by Dee BunkHe knows just what we need to do.
Funny how you never heard him defending Bush from the Bushisms. In fact I heard Balboa make fun of Bush on quite a few occassions
Lets see - the left just won an election by turning the public against Bush with constant yelling and screaming absurdities and lies about Bush that became etched in peoples mind eg. Bush hates Black People; Bush lied people died; Criticizing war or Bush is unpatriotic and lots of other stuff.
Now - we can't make jokes about Obama's legitimizing a tabloid after he just trashed Rush Limbaugh, or we're stooping to their level.
Even if we are stooping to their level so what? Maybe Balboa is afraid of us winning like they did because of it. He need not worry - the press won't pick up our caricatures and run with them. We're just having fun.
Dee, jokes are one
February 3, 2009 - 00:11 ET by JerDee, jokes are one thing...gratuitous smearing is another. More than a few of the comments fall into the latter category.
And, for goodness sakes, Obama neither "legitimized a tabloid" nor "trashed Rush Limbaugh".
Jer
Jer- don't think I've given anything close to a gratuitous smear
February 3, 2009 - 00:22 ET by Dee BunkYou see things differently because you love Obama. Let's just say his comments about Rush Limbaugh would have been much more appropriate here don't you think? Lauer shows him the tabloid and asks him to comment and he could have said something like "You know Matt - you can't read the tabloids and get stuff done. I really don't have time for that." Wouldn't that have been just a little more Presidential?
Dee... I didn't say you
February 3, 2009 - 00:40 ET by JerDee...
I didn't say you were guilty of any smearing, but some of the comments, in my opinion, have crossed the line--particulary when you consider this whole "fat" thing was blown way out of proportion.
Second, I've never loved any president, including Obama. However, I did feel a special fondness for the Gipper.
Third, in a closed meeting with Republicans, Obama made a straightforward comment about 'listening to Limbaugh and getting things done'. Whether it was smart politics to ever mention Rush's name in any context is debatable, but he certainly didn't trash him.
Jer
but you forgot to answer my question Jer
February 3, 2009 - 00:50 ET by Dee Bunkwouldn't the comment have been more presidential as I stated it?
It was not a closed door meeting with Republicans. It was a calculated move on Obama's part, just as his phony baloney dinners and Super Bowl party are. They are all publicity stunts. If they weren't then we wouldn't know so much about them.
So if someone said "Don't listen to Jer if you want to get things done" you'd really take no offense? And I'm not talking on this anonymous blog either. Someone at your work or where you used to work gets a bunch of people together without you there and says don't listen to Jer if you want to get things done" and that wouldn't be offensive to you? Come on Jer - you can't make me believe that.
Dee...
February 3, 2009 - 01:39 ET by JerWould the comment have been more presidential as you stated it? Perhaps, but it's a close question. One of the things I really liked about GWB was his good-natured sense of humor, but I guess some might have viewed his quips and friendly needling as un-presidential.
Regarding your hypothetical, [don't consider this as class envy...well, if you want to, go ahead] if I had a 30 mil Palm Beach estate and were the beneficiary of a 400 mil contract, I wouldn't give a flying flip if someone said that about me [which would only serve to enhance my reputation with my admirers anyway].
Jer
edit footnote: Much to my regret, I did see a post of yours elsewhere in the thread wherein you referred to Obama as a "slimeball" which, in my opinion, crosses the line. But, maybe I've drawn the line unfairly. If I called Bush a "slimeball" would you consider it 'smearing' language?

As for no tie and jacket, it was an informal interview. We got bigger fish to fry with this guy than what he wore in a pre-game superbowl interview.
I don't like the man and his pompous either. But in this interview, the demeaor was very light.

Likewise, put on a suit jacket as President, and you don't have to establish your authority every time you meet with someone. Don't call anyone -- especially a private citizen with a different political outlook than you -- fat, and you avoid the appearance of a common, clueless little twerp with an ax to grind, or trying to make yourself look bigger by comparison.
Obama should know this -- but obviously he doesn't have a clue on what it takes to be an adult. Kinda like the Clintons -- they weren't adults either.

How did you arrive at that conclusion? Did you actually follow the conversation?
The subject was Jessica Simpson, you'd have to be blind to miss that! Obama is supposed to be literate, and a literate person would have known that the subject of the conversation at that point was Simpson. Unless Obama is illiterate, it's obvious that he was intentionally referring to Simpson's weight.
Obama: My job is above my pay grade
Unfortunately I have to agree
February 2, 2009 - 08:23 ET by w3I don't like him and I'd love to pick apart everything the man says. But there are some problems. First of all the MSNBC transcript is incorrect. Barry did not say that Simpson is "losing a weight battle." He said Simpson is "in a weight battle," and he said that because Jessica Simpson's picture with the words "Weight Battle" are where his picture should be.
I agree that he seems to be diminishing the publication and not Simpson.
If he were George W. Bush he might have said something more classy and less vague, but alas, we are in the age of naive tackiness.

He says this around the 10:50 mark. I think the laughter and the "Oh well" comment were over him being replaced on the cover. It was not a comment about Jessica Simpson.
Obama is pointing to the cover which has the words "WEIGHT BATTLE" in the corner. He didn't use those words because of Jessica's photo, he used the words because they were right in front of him - like a teleprompter.
Agreed, mom
February 2, 2009 - 09:11 ET by BlondeYour comment nails it.

Then Obama must be an idiot as he can't seem to separate a cover photo with a blurb about content. That "weight battle" listing wasn't the ONLY indication of content in the issue, there were other's as well, including a reference to Obama's family.
I don't think Obama's an idiot. I think he knew exactly what he was doing, and what his intent really was. His intent was to belittle Simpson because her photo replaced his on the cover. Because he was peeved at losing the coverphoto slot, he intentionally picked the one INSULTING reference of the content visible the cover and used that to slam Jessica. That indicates just how shallow Obama really is.

If you're reading this site just remember that you still look good. You now have the figure of some of the most famous bombshells in Hollywood's history. Bombshells like Monroe, Mansfield, Russell, and any of the 1940's pinup girls that made our soldiers go ga-ga.
Your new figure is a refreshing sight and a reflection of what a true woman looks like. It's a far cry from the emaciated look you see on the runways in NY, Paris, or Milan. You look healthy, happy, and great. Don't change Jessica. If you're happy with your figure and your boyfriend thinks you look great, then don't pay any attention to the snarky comments Obama or anyone else has about you. The rest of them can go pound sand.

February 2, 2009 - 10:25 ET by AshleeSeriously, this is an example of when the other side is looking for something that isn't there. Sure, libs do it all the time to conservatives they can't stand, but this article proves that people on both sides will cry foul and twist even the most moot of issues and trivial of cases.
Here's what happened, Matt Lauer mentioned that US Weekly took Obama off the cover and replaced it with Jessica. He made a candid, off the cuff remark, if anything, that was more critical of the 'soft news,' being the weight story, and showing his obvious distaste of a magazine bumping a presidential related cover story for some nonsensical 'diet battle' of a star who may have put on a pound or two, but is far from any *real* weight issues.
I don't think it was a slam on Jess, and more so a slam on the gossip rag's penchant for fabricated drama pieces of hollyweird's social goings on over actual issues that are important in current events. Simply put, this is wasted time at trying to make a case for something that isn't there by conciously taking this for something it isn't.

And *don't* get me started on *her* annoying use of *these* symbols.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.
Lol you're absurdity is quite entertaining
February 2, 2009 - 11:52 ET by AshleeI've no idea where all *that* came from, I was merely pointing out that the only 'gaffe' here was that Obama's displeasure of snubbing the presidency story for a softball story is stupid because as many said before, its a *gossip rag,* the writers at US and like-minded publications aren't exactly making their dollar by talking about the stimulus package or pork spending, they get paid by creating stupid, and often awful stories (especially in this case, being that Jess is FAR from even chubby, let alone fat.)
I was stating Obama wasn't calling her fat, he was lamenting that he's displeased that a publication would bump him for a story of a 'diet crisis' of a person who is in amazing shape as it is. I was stating that while WTH does have some good points, and many a post of his IS important that it is seen because there is an underlying issue, that this particular one seems just dressed up and far too deeply looked at in hopes of finding further fault in Obama. I think there's plenty of areas that DO matter that we should call him out on, and reference to such non-factor issues as this just shows that while the left suffered from a BAD case of BDS, we might suffer the same if we're not careful; Barack Derangement Syndrome.
I don't know where gender *ever* came up and I only bring it up when the issue pertains to it. Don't assume I'm some poor, helpless girl who is hindered by her issues in the past and that I've let one small facet of who I am define me. It has been you, countless times now I might add, that runs to call me out for the 'gender thing,' anytime I have a differing opinion on an issue than you do. It is not I crying wolf by constantly bringing up the case of gender or my own personal issues, but rather you yourself. I am merely addressing that I made a point about this scenario being a waste of time scrutinizing and you come running in complaining I'm 'going to make this about gender.' Lol. Gender is not an issue prevalent in about 99.9% of issues on here and if you look, aside from situations right now when I address your false accusations of me, I have only brought it up where the issue is either brought up before my chiming in, or if the issue in and of itself is related to such things.
Trust me, Im a fun-loving and care-free sorta gal who gets much more enjoyment talking to people about fiscal issues and the world abroad rather than talk about my boring past and issues. I'm not the one using my 'gender issues' to define me, but rather, it is you.
Oh and thanks for refering to me as 'it.' Real mature.

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.
I'd say I'm sorry...
February 2, 2009 - 12:21 ET by AshleeBut my place here is not to entertain. Seriously, we disagree, got off on the wrong foot, and then seemed amicable via some informal personal messages on here. Then, because I disagree strongly with a view you hold, you take the debate to a negative level and then make every issue about something that *yes* I did mention, but only in the capacity of which it was pertaining to a post miles back from this one (and the others you seem to wait for me to post on so you can pounce on me.)
I don't know why you feel the need to make it personal, but sad to say, it is not I who looks like the fool in these useless back and forths with you. I offer my counter point/opinion. Then you chime in with a heated reassertion of your initial point. I make a counter point regarding your new post, and then immediately I am hit with you calling me 'ignorant,' 'baseless,' and even worse, not even affording me the dignity of human respect by taking an issue that doesn't really even matter in this post, and shove it to the forefront, and then claim Im the one doing it.
You cannot shoot a man and then put the gun in the hands of someone else and accuse them of murder. All the same, you cannot be the only one who, time and again, brings up an issue I did many posts ago, and then claim I'm the one who won't drop it.

In order to be pro-choice, one must first be born. Ah, the irony.
And the shrieking child...
February 2, 2009 - 13:56 ET by AshleePoints to the calmer child, who makes a point, and claims that *they* are the one overreacting. Sorry hun, like I've said before, objective minds who would peruse through our past posts will notice that we butted heads at first, became almost amicable to one another (and I even said that it was indeed a kind PM from you that built that bridge, only for you to burn it down a day later.)
You're the one making it personal. You're the one ignoring the issue and point and making this an attack. I would say the pot is calling the kettle black, but in this case it is not both of us whom is just completely off of it today, sadly that crown is snugly fit onto your head today. Hopefully in the future you'll keep the personal attacks to a minimum when hearing a point or opinion you don't like, or from someone you've apparently decided to be at odds with at any waking chance. If anything, if you're going to keep bringing other issues up as well pertaining to my life, please refrain from claiming I'm the one always bringing it up; its quite evident that you has some vendetta against me as you seem to love bringing the issue to light in non-related posts, then claiming its somehow *MY* fault that you just had to bring it up.
Relax. We disagree, I just wish you hadn't already passed judgement on me due to that small fact that, *gasp,* we disagree on something.

Trust me, I've dealt
February 2, 2009 - 14:36 ET by AshleeTrust me, I've dealt with enough flak being a conservative amongst other things so the one thing I am not is thin skinned. Truth be told, as personal as CL *does* get, its never an issue of me being 'bothered,' just general annoyance of hypocrisy when one goes on an on about 'sticking to the topic,' but when someone else makes a point they don't like, they begin hurling things completely irrelative to the thread in question.
As we all know, awhile back I gave my opinion on homosexuality and transexuals. As we know, most people here do not condone and cannot, faithfully, be in support of such a 'lifestyle.' I respect that, however, as I have said, there are angles and facts from the *other* side that, while not undeniable proof of an answer, still offers just as much as the research that shows its not inborn. That isn't the issue here. If she brings up personal things about me, sure, its a bit rude, but in such a thread, I have brought up my own reasons for my vested interest in the issue and if she wants to touch back on that, fine by me. What I will not sit back and stay mum on is when a person throws out personal facts about another, and then chides *them* for 'never shutting up about it.' That's like talking about the economy for 2 hours then getting miffed when someone asks an economic question.
The simple truth is, I stated that Barry wasn't calling Jess fat, and that posting stories like this as 'justifiable proof of Barry's lack of character' makes us just as bad as the left who said Bush's gaffe of saying 'strategery' was proof of his ineptitude. I don't want to be like the left because, unlike Bush's hate fest, Barry has some legitimate dirt of his new shoes that he'd like us not to mention. I'm more interested in *those* issues, the ones that DO affect our nation. If Barry thinks a pop star is fat, I dont see where that affects me as a citizen under Barack. However, when trying to push forth another 'bail out' under many shady pretenses and certain questions we aren't allowed to ask, I'm more focused on *those* stories. So basically, I was saying 'lets not waste our time on this and risk coming off like we're just *looking* for any reason to hate on Barry. I don't think the majority of us are, we'd love to like him, its just his politic and ideology is at great odds with most of us across the board, myself included.
The only reason this got as far as it did, is because after that point was made, CL comes along and calls me 'it,' as if to rob me of humanity, thus making it easy to discount me, and then rail on me about 'constantly making a case for gender,' when other than one single post here, I was posting in response to people's posts, not trying to make some personal quest for understanding of gender identity. Instead, however, not only is *she* the one bringing it up again, but to add insult to injury, is claiming its somehow *my* fault she can't stop mentioning it when talking to or about me.
Sounds like someone has more issue with my gender rather than myself having the issue. I've met plenty of people who have reacted quite differently to me, but never someone so facsinated that they felt the need to bring it up whenever responding to my posts.....even in unrelated threads where it was never mentioned! :-P

February 2, 2009 - 11:10 ET by Hunter12GC, This was the extent of the analysis that was in the NYT, Time, and Newsweek during the election process. He is a nice looking man with a nice-looking family. Why would the coverage change now? I bet Time is PO'd because US got the story. I can't imagine a person about whom less is known. Think back to just the last election cycle. We knew Kerry and President Bush's GPAs, class-rankings, military service records, boyhood crushes, and political records dating back to how President Bush voted for 8th grade class president. President Obama has served as an elected official for 10 or 12 years and we know nothing about him. These fluff pieces are all we are going to get.

Gotta agree here...
February 2, 2009 - 12:09 ET by AshleeLike I said, if there is *any* issuer to take to task here, its that our President is surprised that a gossip magazine would rather run gossip than something of substance. I really don't see where it can be read that he was in *agreeance* of the diet comment regarding Jessica, but rather, he mentioned it in a humorous way to underscore the point that some of America would still rather read about someone in great shape supposedly struggling with dieting as opposed to something regarding the future leadership of our nation.
And I'm totally with you GC, she's in great shape. She's certainly not as attractive to the general public as her younger sister, but she is most certainly the furthest thing from 'fat.'

It doesn't matter what you think he meant to say - you don't have a clue what he meant to say or what he was thinking. The crux of the matter is that he DID say it. The man believes himself to have class, yet has none.
The fat lady hasn't sung yet and there are still people that want him to give up what he has spent over 800K to hide - and it may not be in the short term, but it will eventually be found out who this man really is. No worries, I am certainly no kool aid drinker, I just know there is many more and better reasons to take Obama, and his actions, to task. I just feel when we focus on such a softball, non-issue story such as this one, it *does* harken to the Bush derangement epidemic that so plaquged the left leaning media outlets. I just want to be sure we're not playing down to their level, that's all.

February 2, 2009 - 10:49 ET by enchantedoneAny man should know that stating a woman is losing a battle with their weight is as good as saying she is fat.
This man thinks he is king. President Bush (regardless if you don't like him or his politics) always took the high road with class. I couldn't imagine him talking down to individuals or singling them out. obama has in only two weeks told the world to stop listening to Rush if they want anything done (that probably only made Rush's numbers go up) and now insulted Jessica Simpson on national television. Who does this man think he is? He is a punk, a fraud, and a pretender.
While I am on a roll, has he taken a look at his wife? She has a huge butt and her figure is nothing to write home about. (oh and I am a woman)

February 2, 2009 - 11:41 ET by SnappyOnce again we are seeing that BO does not understand or have really a clue as to the gravity and prestige of the office he now holds. His mind is still focused on showing us all how "hip" and knowledgable he is with the Hollywood gossip. He hasnt yet figurued out yet that none of that nonsense means anything. His concerns should be above all that ..... but they are not, he is still reading people magazine instead of keeping us safe. This is the second slam of a popular entertainer from the President and its only been 2 weeks.............
A little perspective please
February 2, 2009 - 11:41 ET by GabeI'm no fan of Obama. But I think this little kerfuffle has been blown out of proportion. He was making a joke not about Simpson, but about the publication's priorities. They were talking about how his image was editted from a picture to make room for a bit of scandalous celeb gossip. All he was doing was reading the cover.
Now I will say that he doesn't need any more "human interest" fluff pieces about him or his family. The media needs to get over it and actually do their job reporting on the substance of his administrative policies and actions.
They actually did Obama a favor.
February 2, 2009 - 12:18 ET by CobraManUS Weekly actually did Obama, and themselves, a favor by replacing his photo with one of Jessica Simpson. I'm surprised that so many people missed that, including Obama.
Can you imagine the uproar that would have spread across the liberal blogsphere if a picture of Obama would have been posted on a cover that also contained the words "weight battle?" If Obama couldn't even separate the content from the cover, how well do you think the other leftists would have fared?
By replacing Obama with Jessica, US Weekly actually spared themselves the wrath of the left blogsphere, which is what I am sure was their reasons behind their choice for the cover photo.

February 2, 2009 - 12:28 ET by jarrett.edwardsWhy should Obama be concerned at all
about the priorities of US Weekly? It is a celebrity magazine, now if
it was a news magazine I would agree with you. This man is the
President, he should not be concerned about how he is portrayed in
the infotainment media. He has such an ego, that he thinks that he is
the most important person in the world and how dare he not be the
center of attention, it is beneath the position of President, and
heaven help us over the next four years.

February 2, 2009 - 12:42 ET by danebramageI think it's perfectly plausible that Obama was simply commenting on the weirdness of a national magazine pushing aside a story about our newly-inaugurated Jesus in favor of a story about a second-rate celebrity and her weight issues. In other words, his point may have been precisely that we should *not* be wasting time talking about trivialities like Simpson's weight, but should instead be talking about *him*. Yeah, it's more than a bit conceited for him (as opposed to someone else) to be saying that, but that's the way I'm understanding his comment.

Clinger - I didn't think it could get worse than Clinton
February 2, 2009 - 16:08 ET by Dee Bunkin terms of classlessness, but Obama is far worse. He's much more arrogant and sneaky about it. Clinton didn't think he was better than everyone the way Obama does. Clinton wanted to be loved but with Obama it's expected. He's so above us all.
Never thought I'd long for the Clinton years but I am. I'd so much rather have Clinton back than PrezBO.
i think you are soooooo right...
February 2, 2009 - 16:42 ET by clinging to my guns and my religion...but that's really scary!!! i used to see these people wearing t-shirts that said "anyone but hillary", and i would think they were right. now i think, "hey, be careful what you wish for"!

February 2, 2009 - 21:52 ET by Dee BunkHope all is well with you. See you gave up on twitter already. It takes awhile to get used to.
Hi Dee

February 2, 2009 - 15:27 ET by ConservativeRexDoes this a-hole think he is a king? Miss Simpson is a private citizen!
How dare this idiot comment in a negative light on someone who pays part of his salary! He's not fit for this job. 4 long years is all we have to put up with this halfrican.
→ And there you have it
February 2, 2009 - 16:09 ET by Cool ArrowLooks like some pretty tame stuff here, and this board is going all Obama Derangement Syndrome over some perceived direct ridicule of Jessica Simpson.
Please tell me this isn't something that really has us in an uproar.

February 2, 2009 - 16:22 ET by balboaAs always, one of the sane voices on the right.
Obama is being treated on here just the way that the right said it was ridiculous to criticize Bush for.
Well Bal, except that Bush
February 2, 2009 - 16:41 ET by ConservativeRexWell Bal, except that Bush never critized a private citizen in a public forum. Is this all we can expect from this man? I am aware that the bar is set fairly low for liberals but this IS ridiculous.
Let this pass and what else are you willing to let pass? This may be just his beginning. I get the distinct impression that he does not give a damn for white folks unless and until they hit their knees for him.
He comes across as a petty little man. But as long as we know the ground rules he can be treated as such. I am not willing to give him a pass on the "little" things he says or does. It s in my experience that "little things" can turn bad, fast.
There's nothing to "let
February 2, 2009 - 16:46 ET by balboaThere's nothing to "let pass." He didn't insult her. He commented on what the article was about. There's nothing controversial about it unless you want to try really, really hard, which apparently everyone wants to do.
Even Warner won't change his headline.
It's Cool Cool
February 2, 2009 - 16:35 ET by Dee Bunkwe're just chillin havin some fun. It's all cool with Obama Cha
Simpson really is fat, Joe the Plumber isn't REALLY a Plumber, Palin really is a Pig. Geithner & Daschele made simple mistakes and we're all just bitter clingers with Obama derangement syndrome listening to Rush so things don't get done.
Gotta be Cool like Obama. Culture wars are crazy and if you just ignore social conservatives and fund abortion behind closed doors everyone will be happy. No one really apposes abortions or funding them unless some wacky born again preacher gets them riled up.
The world has righted itself and everything is as it should be. We're just having fun playing our part.
Of course, he didn't say
February 2, 2009 - 16:37 ET by balboaOf course, he didn't say she was fat, for one thing. He made a comment on the article headline on the front of the magazine.
And when Bush did anything from a "relaxed" standpoint, you guys said it was a good thing.
I didn't say Obama called her fat
February 2, 2009 - 16:51 ET by Dee Bunkand I didn't say anything was wrong with relaxin. Just chill baby it's all cool
